FROM BIGGIE TO BEASTIE BOYS SQUARE:LEROY MCCARTHY'S QUEST TO MAKE NYC LOVE HIP-HOP As hip-hop enters middle-age, the burning question for many in its birthplace of New York City is: why doesn't the city show more respect for a culture that has transformed the Big Apple and influenced the world? One Brooklyn resident, LeRoy McCarthy, is taking it to the streets-literally; McCarthy is on a mission to convince the city to co-name important streets and intersections after some of its most notable children. McCarthy has several campaigns in motion, including a petition for a Christopher Wallace Way in Brooklyn, but the focus right now is on the intersection of Ludlow & Rivington streets, in the Lower East Side of Manhattan. To any well-versed hip-hop head, this intersection is significant for being featured on the cover of the Beastie Boys' sophomore release, Paul's Boutique. Fittingly, McCarthy is seeking to co-name the intersection, "Beastie Boys Square."
