On June 26, 2014, Bluewater Productions released new comic book biographies focusing on political and military subjects:  American Defenders: The U.S. Air Force, Political Power: General David Petraeus, andFemale Force: Conservative Women of Politics.

Most of us have heard his name. Most have seen his face. But until now, his story has been a mystery. General David Petraeus has been a leader of men, and his name has become synonymous in recent years with the American war effort. Join the top-selling comic series Political Power and get an up-close look at the man himself. Written by CW Cooke and Michael L. Frizellandillustrated by acclaimed artist James Bolton,Political Power: General David Petraeus will feature a special cover by famed comic book legend Joe Phillips. About General Petraeus, Frizell states, “He’s a fascinating figure. Though missteps in his personal life forced him to step down from his position as Director of the CIA in 2012, his heroic service remains untarnished.”

Female Force is a series that features biographies on strong, independent women in the world of politics.Female Force: Conservative Women of Politics is a 96-page graphic novel written by John Blundell, CW Cooke, Michael Troy, and Jerome Maida with art by Todd Tenant, Luciano Kars, Manuel Díaz and a cover by Jaume Font. This graphic novel includes stories on Ayn Rand, Nancy Reagan, Laura Ingraham, and Michele Bachmann. The graphic novel retails in print for $17.99 and digitally for $9.99.

It's off we go into the wild blue yonder to discover the origins from the most amazing air force in the world. From the use of balloons during Civil War for spying on the enemy, the fabled dunes of Kitty Hawk, to the high-tech aircraft and exploits of today, American Defenders: The U.S. Air Force shows how the United States Air Force keeps skies over our country safe and how they helped defeat any and all enemies both foreign and domestic. American Defenders: The U.S. Air Force is a special-length 32 pages written by Don Smith with art by Jon Stanicek.

A collected edition of the American Defenders features all issues of the comic book series.  Includes the biographies of the United States: Army, Air Force, Marines and Navy.  American Defenders: The Untied States Military is released on July 30th.

In the past Bluewater has featured subjects as Ronald Reagan, Ted Kennedy, Margaret Thatcher, The U.S. Army, Hillary Clinton and Condoleezza Rice, subjects carefully selected by founder and publisher Darren Davis. “Comic books are a great way for kids to read about famous people and important topics in an engaging medium that open pathways to understanding the importance of these topics to the world,” added Davis. “Our biography comic books are now taught in schools and libraries for students and reluctant readers.”

Straight Forward Reviews : Fathom Kiani vol 3 # 2

Kiani comes back this month for more action and intrigue in Aspen's Fathom Kiani # 2.

Writer - Vince Hernandez

Artist - Gisueppe Cafaro

Publisher - Aspen

Review by Jeremias de Leon

Story

Kiani makes some new friends and possibly many more enemies in the latest issue. A spoiler free summary is that Kiani meets a man who promises he can help her find what she's looking for and of course we're left to wonder if he really will do what he says about helping Kiani. Kiani herself does not trust him but decides that he's the only lead she has right now and that's all I'll say without spoiling.

The writing in this is well done. Although there's hints and glimpses of action, this issue is about the characters. Their dialog seems very well thought out and Kiani seems to be developing and growing as a character. The other character that wants Kiani for his research also gets fleshed out with a backstory. This issue really does a great job of rounding out it's characters.

Art

The art has been gorgeous in this book. There's lots of eye candy in this book from Kiani's complex hair, to beautiful scenery to a few awesome splash pages. The colors are beautiful as well and really add life to Giuseppe's lines. I've got nothing detrimental to say about the art here.

Verdict

If you want a book where you want a reason for the characters to be fighting and with lots of beautiful art you can do a lot worse than Fathom : Kiani. It has nice art, thought out characters and cool action. I highly recommend it. I give Fathom : Kiani Vol. 3 # 2 a 9 out of 10.

Comics News: Inkwell Awards Voting Is OPEN (April 15th - April 30th, 2014)

(New Bedford, MA/USA—April 14, 2013) The Inkwell Awards, a non-profit organization devoted to educating and promoting the art of inking, invites the public to vote for the industry's best of the past year. The official public ballot will be available on the Inkwell Awards' homepage from April 15 through April 30. Voting is open to everyone, whether fans or professional peers. The winners will be announced at the live awards ceremony at Heroes Con in Charlotte, NC June 20-22 on Saturday the 21st at 12:30pm.

As with last year, the ballot will still list the nominees for the Joe Sinnott Hall of Fame lifetime achievement award, which were chosen by the internal and separate Hall of Fame Nomination Committee (made up of the core committee, former committee members, ambassadors, contributors and existing Hall of Fame award recipients). To avoid a “popularity contest” where recent names have more influence than past masters, the two winners have been chosen by the HoF Nomination Committee rather than the public and will be announced at the ceremony. Current nominees are listed as a courtesy. Past Hall of Fame award recipients include Joe Sinnott, Terry Austin & Dick Giordano, Klaus Janson & Al Williamson, Wallace Wood & Kevin Nowlan, Mark McKenna & Scott Williams, and last year, Dick Ayers & Murphy Anderson.

“We’re so excited for this event, where everyone’s hard work will pay off and the best of the best ink artists and their work will be recognized,” said Bob Almond, founder and director of The Inkwell Awards (AKA "The Inkwells"). "Inkers have their own fans and followers, and often go unsung or glossed over in traditional awards events. Ours caters specifically to ink artists and allows several to be recognized and appreciated in various categories.”

Ballots and instructions can be viewed at The Inkwells' web site beginning on tax day, April 15. A direct link will additionally be posted on their Facebook group page, where people may also ask any questions.

The Inkwell Awards is an official 501(c)3 non-profit organization whose mission is to educate and promote the art form of comic-book inking, as well as annually recognize and award the best ink artists and their work. Now in its seventh year, the organization is overseen by a committee of industry professionals and assisted by various professional ambassadors and numerous contributors. They sponsor the Dave Simons Inkwell Memorial Scholarship Fund for the Kubert School and host the Joe Sinnott Hall of Fame Award.
