Comic News: Burn the Orphanage Comes to Image This August

Starting in August, Image Comics will show readers that revenge is a dish best served with blazing side-scroller-style action when it publishes BURN THE ORPHANAGE, the first part of the BORN TO LOSE trilogy by Sina Grace (THE LI’L DEPRESSED BOY, NOT MY BAG) and Daniel Freedman (UNDYING LOVE).

Rock was a young orphan when he was left for dead in a burning building, and now he’s out to find the person responsible. With action inspired by 1980s video games like Double Dragon and Streets of Rage, Rock will take on every goon and punk in the city, along with his friends Lex and Bear, who bring their own talents into the mix.

"I'm lucky enough that I get to work with one of my best friends on a comic book that was birthed from a love of video games, music, and styles of our shared childhood,” said Grace, who both co-writes and draws the series. “We're going to put our rough and tough hero Rock through the wringer in Burn the Orphanage, and I'm glad that the industry embraces the product of our intense friendship."

Co-writer Freedman agreed. "Burn the Orphanage is Sina’s and my baby to the world,” he said. “While it was in our collective womb, we piped in shred guitar and 8-bit techno. Birthed it by way of interstellar travel. Nursed it on an unhealthy amount of side-scrolling, brawling, and button-mashing. And clothed it in the fur-lined rags of our childhoods, meaning acid washed jeans, bandanas and fishnets. I'm just excited for people to finally get a look at this monster. "

Grace and Freedman talked about the BORN TO LOSE trilogy and their influences, appropriately, at IGN. BURN THE ORPHANAGE, the first issue of the BORN TO LOSE trilogy, will feature a variant cover by CHEW artist Rob Guillory and a Hastings-exclusive cover by Riley Rossmo (BEDLAM, DÍA DE LOS MUERTOS), both of which were revealed on MTV Geek.

BURN THE ORPHANGE: BORN TO LOSE #1 will be in stores on August 7.

CoW: Cover of the Week 3/21/13

Elephantmen #47

I know next to nothing about the Image's Elephantmen run. So I'm coming to this cover from a completely unbiased perspective. It's not my typical. It's not action packed. It's quaint; almost tranquil. The shear composition of this cover was orchestrated very well. The white/light background against her brown skin and black hair... The petals falling... And then there is this mech-rhinoceros helmet upon her head that just warrants so many questions. Whats the deal with the helmet? Whats up with the baby rhinothing dressed up as a human baby? Are they worried? Are they scared? Do they feel protected? Calm?  I'm pretty sure this is my favorite cover to date.

Comic News: Get Repossessed by Image Comics

Exorcism is a blue-collar job in new Image Comics mini-series

A plague of demons getting you down? Has a loved one started gibbering in the inscrutable language of Hell? Not to worry—there are people trained to cast out those spirits! In January 2013, Image Comics will introduce you to the Dee Agency and three of its tough-as-demon-claws agents in REPOSSESSED, a raucous new mini-series by JM Ringuet (TRANSHUMAN).

No-nonsense Joe, swaggering Clay, and whip-smart Martha are the best repo team at Dee Agency. Their demon-vanquishing gear consists of big guns, bigger grimoires, and a good supply of silver bullets and saints' teeth—and they know how to use them! (Though Clay does tend to be heavy on the bombastic combat talk). They'll need all of their skills to complete a seemingly easy mission to repossess a rich girl who has run away to Las Vegas—because this is one case of something that happens in Vegas no t staying in Vegas.

REPOSSESSED is a supernatural action-fest, with the wryness of Hellboy and the badass attitude of classic Grindhouse films—exactly what Ringuet wanted to create.

"What I wanted to do was to create a packed fun action thrill-ride, something that would feel like barreling down a highway in a muscle car with loud rock music blasting from the radio and a bunch of friends laughing in the backseat," said Ringuet, who both writes and illustrates REPOSSESSED. "I wanted to make it explosive, surprising, funny, with something new on every page."

The first issue of this Dodge Charger (with a sweet flame paint job) of a comic is due in stores on January 9. Pre-order it at your local comics store from the November issue of Previews now, and save yourself the race down the interstate to snag the last issue on the shelves!

Comic News: The Skullkickers get Uncanny!

This February, Image Comics invites readers to jump on board action and adventure, newly reinvigorated with a very special adjective – THE UNCANNY SKULLKICKERS!

“After almost twenty issues of critically-acclaimed cranium-smashing adventure, we felt it was important to remind retailers and readers that Skullkickers is the most enjoyable adventure series in the entire comic industry," said Image PR and Marketing Director Jennifer de Guzman. "What better way to do that than to add a spiffy new adjective to it! That’s what people do, right?”

UNCANNY SKULLKICKERS, written by Jim Zub and drawn by adorable elf-man Edwin Huang, begins the second half of the epic six-arc Skullkickers storyline and is a perfect jumping-on point for new readers of the action-comedy fantasy series. And who doesn't want to be known as a reader of a comic about hard-headed mercenaries knocking heads for fun and profit? I mean, really.

“We pride ourselves on making each and every issue of Skullkickersaccessible, but this spiffy #1 is that times ten," said creator Zub. "We quickly recap the story that’s come before and then push forward into new action-packed territory: a deadly island of mystery, swashbuckling adventure, ferocious man-eating turtles, pissed-off apes...  it’s a cornucopia of entertainment.”

And if you’re a diehard collector of SKULLKICKERS who's sad that you won’t have a SKULLKICKERS #19 to add to your collection? Don’t worry, we’ve thought of everything. In addition to the regular “Uncanny” cover we’re offering a special “issue #19 variant” B cover to make sure your collector streak is unbroken.

It’s new. It’s classic. It’s a modern reinterpretation that gets back to the roots of these timeless characters. UNCANNY SKULLKICKERS #1 will available wherever kick-ass comics are sold on February 27!

Cover of the Week: Spawn #224 for 10/24/12

 COVER OF THE WEEK

This week's CoW comes from none other than Todd McFarlane himself. To continue Image's 20th anniversary and Spawn's continuing celebration, McFarlane has been doing lots of cover omages to famous covers throughout comics. Yet, This week's Spawn #224 really struck a cord as McFarlane takes a bit from The Dark Knight Returns with this cover. This cover was suggested by brand new BI member, BAC of Laid Back Comics.

Spawn looks amazing and McFarlane has Frank Miller's style down to a tee here. It is beautiful, grim and dark; much like the cover it is inspired by. Kudos Mr. McFarlane for getting this week's Golden Udder.

Comic News: Edmondson and Zonjic return with Where is Jake Ellis

 (from Image Comics site)
Follow-up to Eisner-nominated miniseries in November

WHO IS JAKE ELLIS?, the Image Comics series by Nathan Edmondson and Tonči Zonjić received an Eisner Award nomination for Best Limited Series. And now the taut, intense thriller that explores identity and consciousness is back with a much-anticipated sequel.

WHERE IS JAKE ELLIS?, a new series starting in November, delves deeper in the mystery of Jake Ellis and how he became linked to super-spy Jon Moore's consciousness. In WHO IS JAKE ELLIS?, Jake and Jon infiltrated "The Facility," where Jon was transformed from a CIA analyst into a field agent who can predict almost every move of his targets—thanks to Jake Ellis, a man who can see everything but whom only Jon can see.

The second JAKE ELLIS volume picks up a year after the end of the first, with Jon Moore in hiding from his past—and The Facility. But these are the people who created him—and Jake Ellis—and they won't be an easy tail to shake. Soon Jon is in their crosshairs once again, and he will need Jake Ellis to survive. Now Jon has two missions: stop The Facility, and find a man that no one else can see.

Nathan Edmondson is pleased to return to the world of JAKE ELLIS. "Tonci and I had more story in mind when we conceived WHO IS JAKE ELLIS?, and this is it," he said.

Zonjić's art on JAKE ELLIS perfectly balances mood and action, color and shadow, creating environments and characters that are deceptively simple and all the more effective because of it.

"We've grown together as creators," continued Edmondson. "And we're more than thrilled to walk Jon Moore and Jake Ellis back into the pages of an Image Comics book and into the hands of readers."

WHERE IS JAKE ELLIS is a five-issue, full-color mini-series. The first issue (SEP120405) will be in stores onNovember 14 and is available for pre-order now from the September issue of Previews. The creators invite readers to follow them on Twitter at @NHEdmondson and @tozozozo.

Comic News: Science Is On Top In Nowhere Men

( From Image Comics Site)
New Image Comics series by Stephenson and Bellegarde debuts in November

Dade Ellis, Simon Grimshaw, Emerson Strange, and Thomas Walker were the Fab Four of science, ushering in a new boom in scientific advancement as the research group World Corp. They changed the world and became the most celebrated scientists of all time, but somewhere along the way, it all went wrong.

Welcome to the new Age of Enlightenment. Welcome to NOWHERE MEN, an all-new Image Comics series by Eric Stephenson (LONG HOT SUMMER) and Nate Bellegarde (BRIT, INVINCIBLE PRESENTS: ATOM EVE & REX SPLODE), with colors by Jordie Bellaire (THE MANHATTAN PROJECTS) and design by Fonografiks (SAGA, THE STRANGE TALENT OF LUTHER STRODE), debuting in November.

NOWHERE MEN marks Image Comics Publisher Eric Stephenson's return to the writer's chair to tell a story he's been burning to write.

"For years, I've been fascinated by the notion of a world where science shaped our culture in a similar way to popular music back in the 1960s," explained Stephenson. "We've seen hints of that world in film and television, but I've always wondered what burden being at the forefront of that kind of cultural revolution would carry. The Beatles fell apart at the end of the '60s – if science did actually supplant rock 'n' roll, how would the trailblazers of that movement fare? And if an individual like Steve Jobs could have such a profound impact on society, what would happen if a group of equally brilliant minds joined together with a common cause?"

Stephenson added: "I've been working on this for a number of years, but the timing just seemed right given that this year is Image's 20th anniversary, and Image Comics itself represented a bold shift in thinking that, in many ways, changed comics forever. It's not a coincidence that the business model established by the Image founders not only allows, but encourages someone like me to share my own creativity."

NOWHERE MEN is brought to punk-rock pop-art life by Nate Bellegarde whose meticulously detailed style previously graced Robert Kirkman's BRIT and INVINCIBLE PRESENTS: ATOM EVE & REX SPLODE.

"NOWHERE MEN gives me the chance to illustrate the gleaming, unfulfilled promise of 'yesterday's tomorrow, today,'" said Bellegarde. "I get to bring life to intricate characters and really sink my teeth into the sci-fi genre, taking the best influences from classic sci-fi films like 2001: A Space Odyssey and Alien and groundbreaking comics visions like Enki Bilal's Nikopol Trilogy, Geof Darrow's work on Hard Boiled and Frank Quitely's run on All-Star Superman to create a vivid, idyllic new world that is as much of a thrill to draw as it is to dream about."

THE WALKING DEAD creator and Image Comics partner Robert Kirkman added: "One of the things I love about Eric Stephenson is he can talk the talk and walk the walk. The best thing about being an Image partner is having a stake in a company that facilitates the creative vision of people who have unique things to say. I love that our Publisher isn't just some suit, but a creative guy whose work can stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the best the industry has to offer. That's what makes Image different from everybody else: We're in it because we love the creativity of comics. I can't wait to read this comic every month."

NOWHERE MEN is a full-color ongoing series making its debut on November 21. Priced at only $2.99, each issue is 32 pages and 100% advertisement-free. The first issue (SEP120393) is available for pre-order in the September issue of Previews. For anyone interested in getting a sneak peek at Stephenson's and Bellegarde's brave new world, check out the three-page teaser in the back of THE WALKING DEAD #102 (AUG128248), on sale now.

TimeTravelTuesdays: Let's Talk About Chew

I've gotten a reputation among people who know me as being 'the Indie Guy', and I can't quite say that I don't live up to that title at least a little considering how much I'll prattle on about Darwyn Cooke's Parker adaptation, or the Vertigo Crime label, or pretty much everything Image and IDW put out these days. When my birthday comes rolling around, I already know what I'm going to find under those wrappers: DVDs for films with budgets the size of the amount your average business man makes in a year, and a comic book about someone breaking some kind of law somehow written by someone with either the last name Azzerello, Collins, or Brubaker.

Not that that's a bad thing. I can't tell you how much I enjoy the Parker series or Criminal because of how dearly I do love them, but after awhile, books like Andy Diggle's Rat Catcher may be very good, but just seem like another thing out in the mess (this in no way you should pass on Rat Catcher, it's a hell of a fine read). I'm also a big fan of your regular, no sugar, no sweetener, no milk, black crime fiction coffee. I've read over a dozen books by Raymond Chandler, a number of books by Dashielle Hammet, and I've gotten pretty good at being able to tell by stills alone which Humphrey Bogart film is which. I'm 20 something years old and I felt as if I've hit a point in the crime fiction genre that I'd never be able to recover from, and while Darwyn Cooke and Ed Brubaker can show me a great time, I just didn't think I'd be able to see something new in crime fiction. Then I finally read Chew.

I know, it's been out since 2009. I'm rather late to this game, but I'd rather have showed up late than missed it altogether, because damn, what a game this is. It's like the second game in the Nationals/Yankees series a few weeks back where the Nats held off the Yankees for 14 innings. (I know most of you out there probably have no idea about baseball, but you gotta trust me on it that that game was one hell of a game. The kind I'll be talking about well after actual baseball fans have other more pressing baseball things to talk about.)

For those who have no idea what Chew is, let me put it in the most laconic terms I can muster: Reluctant cannibal detective eats people to psychically see their lives in an attempt to solve their murder. Also the FDA banned all chicken and other bird meats because of the bird flu. Don't know if pork was banned because of swine flu. So... you interested yet?

Now, I'm not going to say Chew is the most original thing as far as comics goes right now. To tell you the truth, I'm a firm believer in the concept that there is no such thing as true originality, there's just a refreshing take on the old, and Grant Morrison (read Massive Drug Trips). But I will say that of all the 'refreshing takes on the old' Chew might be the one head over shoulders the rest. It's the kind of thing that I just don't see a lot of in these crime fiction comics: A sense of levity that doesn't take itself too seriously, but seriously enough to where I can see some actual drama in it.

One of the big things that immediately catches you about Chew is the art. I feel strangely remiscent of the works of the macabre master Edward Gorey when I see Rob Guillory's interiors, which while it does not have his signature cross hatchings, it does have his flare for the darkly cartoonish. (I also can't be the only one who hears strings and an accordian while I read this, can I?) And please forgive me if I sound a bit too eager to see a book that isn't trying for the more common realistic approach for comics, but that this book also has that almost twisted almost gothic very well lived in, dirtied up, bloodied thuroughly, and then quickly washed with the wrong detergent as to try to avoid suspicion kind of feel makes this ride worth more than simply that it isn't something, but more that it is something else of it's own.

Still, I think where it hits it's high stride though, is the characters. They make this world seem believable, which considering that this book relies on you being able to accept that the FDA has a special crimes unit it's a pretty big deal. The entire cast is just a list of pure heroes, charmers, and winners. Our protagonist, the eponymous reluctant cannibal detective, Tony Chu earned his way into my heart before I even got done with 5 pages, and is easily the heart to this tale. He's not some crooked cop, he's not some by-the-book crony, he's not some loose cannon on the edge, or a guy just trying to make his way in the world; he's just a police detective working because of the reason anyone really becomes a police detective. The pay is the best for what it is, and you get a sense of job satisfaction and accomplishment out of it. Also the pay. That's before I get to it's supporting characters, all of them just as strong, each of them their own distinct force to the comic, bringing something of their own to the benefit of the book. Of course, I wouldn't want to spill all about them and ruin your chance to learn about them on your own. That's what wikipedia is for.

Now, Chew isn't a particularly complicated story, not to say it's not devoid of it's share of nuances, but it's strength isn't in the complexity of it's plot, but in what nuances it tells. The world is just that right blend of different and the same enough to feel as if you've been held hostage by it, and soon develope a form of Stockholm Syndrome for it making you want to learn just how it got all those scars. It's John Layman's penchant for charm that makes Chew such an immediately likable story. I'd think one would be hardpressed to try and read only a single issue of Chew and not want more. ("Layman, bet'cha you can't just read one.") A large part of that charm stems from it's morbidly dark sense of humor that gives you ease and makes it okay when you see people explode into a spew of blood, chunks, and other, as they do from time to time. It's only this series that I can say that gore is a charm.

Chew is still ongoing, but rumors abound about it possibly ending soon, (and about it possibly getting a TV series, with Lost's Ken Leung supposedly attached) so this is a perfect time to get into this lightly hearted, darkly comedic, refreshingly 'lively' crime drama that I just cannot recommend enough, not merely to just those who feel worn out on your typical crime fiction affair, but to anyone with the stomach for something so delightfully devilish.
