Transformers: Fall of Cybertron Review

This review is based off of the PS3 version of the game.

A precious few franchises have garnered enough following to rival the loyal family of the Transformers. From G1 to Prime; Transformers has evolved from toys to block buster movies. Transformers: FoC is one of the latest entries into the extensive catalog of Cybertronian material and the sequel to the well received Transformers: War for Cybertron.

Storywise, FoC takes place seemingly immediately after the events of War for Cybertron. FoC opens during the last chapter of the game, with the legendary Autobot space vessel, the Arc, under heavy fire and siege by Decepticon forces. You start off using Bumblebee, struggling his way through the quickly degrading infrastructure of the Arc. He approaches the always climatic battle between Optimus Prime, leader of the Autobots, and Lord Megatron. The battle goes horribly south and quickly tunes us into the desperate situation the Autobots are in. The narrative rewinds to eight days before the opening events and the course of the game becomes an onward battle of attrition for energon and information.

Most of us know that the Autobots (and Decepticons) make it to Earth after leaving their beloved Cybertron. While the end is known, it doesn't make the journey there any less meaningful. High Moon did a great job of fleshing out the road to Earth during Cybertron's last days and made it impactful.

"Transformers: FoC is the apex of Transformers games to date."

The story is well paced and takes a lot of cues from Transformers the Movie. (The original animated version, not the Michael Bay blockbuster.) Hearing classic lines such as; "til all are one" and Rumble's "first we crack the shell, then we crack the nuts inside" were a classic touch that helped solidify the universe. They even played "the Touch" during the end credits. But the most riveting piece of plot was learning how the DinoBots came to be.

"Me Grimlock burn Prime puny butt!"

The controls for FoC are pretty much the shooter standard with the inclusion of character/event specific special abilities. The movement of the Cybertronians is a little clunky. A couple times I found myself fighting my own movement more than the actual enemies, which I particularly noticed with Optimus Prime and Megatron. But they are bigger guys and less spry than Jazz and Cliffjumper. The cover mechanic revolved around switching the shoulder camera and hiding behind various objects. A Gears of War cover system would have been a better fit and a smooth one, especially since the game virtually plays like robot GoW.

The gameplay varies depending on your character, which does a good job of changing the pace from the basic 'pew pew'. Optimus and Megatron are pretty straight forward, while Cliffjumper and Starscream's chapters revolve around stealth. And then there's Grimlock... Grimlock's chapter consists of blowing things up and beating the spark out of anything that comes near you till it's slag. Grimlock steals the show by far. He's so powerful they limited his time in Dino Mode to a rage gauge.

Even with all its glory FoC isn't without a bug or two. At least once per chapter (particularly with the faster characters and fliers) Jazz or Starscream would find themselves rocketing through the side of a wall and into oblivion, doomed to fall for eternity. Or in Starscream's case hover. At that point the only options was to restart from the latest checkpoint, which most often than not was only minutes before the mishap.

If you really sat down with it, you could probably conquer all thirteen chapters of FoC in one day. But for most folks it will probably be two to three. If you are just looking for a good time I'd recommend playing it on normal. If you want a challenge (and you're a shooter vet) you'll want to just start on the hard difficulty. It'll get a bit annoying as you die nearly instantly until you get some upgrades, but it'll be a bit more bang for your buck. Warning though, the last fight is ridiculous on hard. For your hard work; a horde mode called Escalation is unlocked after beating the game.

The multiplayer mode is impressive and toots a decent customization system. You can unlock armor sets of your favorite Transformers and mix and match to make your own bot. The modes are the standard run of the mill; Team Deathmatch, Capture the Flag, along with Conquest and Headhunter, which play like Territories and V.I.P from Halo, respectively.

In all, Transformers: Fall of Cybertron is a strong game with a huge mythos to build off of and live up to. It accomplishes this in spades. Its shortcomings are easily overlooked for the polished veneer and care High Moon put into the game. If you are a Transformers fan you cannot pass this game up. Transformers: FoC is the apex of Transformers games to date.

Transformers Prime Review

Genre: Action, Adventure, Science-fiction, Drama
Format: CGI animation
Developed by: Roberto Orci, Alex Kurtzman, Duane Capizzi, Jeff Kline
Executive producer(s): Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci, Jeff Kline
Running time: approx. 21 minutes
Production company(s): Digitalscape, K/O Paper Products, Darby Pop Productions, Hasbro Studios, Polygon Pictures

Let’s get this out of the way right now. It is not blood but Energon that flows through my veins. I AM a Transformers fan! I grew up on the “Robots in Disguise” and have watched each series that followed the original after its original run ended in 1988 in North America. I admit I was unaware of a Japanese series at the time but if I did, you better believe I would’ve been on it. Like a lot of shows from the era of big hair, action films and when MTV used to play music, Transformers is a part of my childhood and I’ll watch the big bots battle it out no matter what series it is. When the original series ended, it was a disappointing time for fans including myself. But that changed when a new breed of Transformers was introduced in 1996 in the form of Beast Wars: Transformers. It was a really cool show though at first I wasn’t too keen on the animal forms and the Maximal and Predacon fractions. However, the show was well scripted enough to keep my interests as well as make tie-ins to the original series.

Transformers Prime is the latest series in the popular franchise. After the success of the video game Transformers: War for Cybertron, Hasbro placed the continuity of the series into that of War for Cybertron's. The dynamic between the kids and the robots is meant to be like “Iron Giant” whereas the movies were about a boy and his car. Digitalscape Company Limited, famous for their work on such titles as Soulcalibur III, Ninja Gaiden, and Dead or Alive Paradise, developed the CGI Animation of Transformers: Prime. Although Digitalscape ran a job fair looking for a talent to work on the production, Polygon Pictures ultimately won. Jose Lopez, character designer, described the animation of the series as "groundbreaking mix of 2D animation and CGI."

The series began with a five-part mini-series that centered on three young humans, Jack Darby, Miko Nakadai, and Rafael Esquivel, who are accidentally caught in the crossfire in a fight between enormous robots that transform into vehicles. They are taken to the Autobot base where Optimus Prime introduces them to his team—Arcee, Ratchet, Bumblebee and Bulkhead and explains to them about Cybetron and their ongoing war against Megatron and his followers the Decepticons. While this is going on, Megatron returns after a three-year long exile with Dark Energon, a substance with the power to bring dead Transformers back to life. His intentions are to raise an undead army to conquer the Autobots. In the final episode of the premiere, the Autobots find and destroy the Space Bridge. The explosion destroys Megatron’s approaching army and Megatron.

In the first season, Starscream takes over as leader of the Decepticons following Megatron’s apparent death. To his annoyance, Megatron is found amongst the debris of the destroyed Space Bridge. He remains in a comatose state throughout much of the season until his return later on where he issues Starscream severe punishment. During his reign, Starscream, as well as the Autobots, searched Earth for ancient relics sent from Cybertron hundreds of years ago. Through the season’s progression, we are introduced to several new characters including the Autobot Wheeljack, the Decepticons Airachnid, Knock Out, and Breakdown, and the human terrorist organization M.E.C.H., led by former US army colonel Leland 'Silas' Bishop. At the end of the season, the Autobots form an uneasy alliance with Megatron when Earth is threatened by the ancient and destructive being Unicron.

Following the events of season one, Optimus Prime reverts back to his pre-Prime state as Orion Pax. Jack and Arcee travel to Cybertron to find the ancient computer Vector Sigma to restore Optimus’s memories and the Matrix of Leadership. The tone for the remainder of the season is the recovery of ancient relics from the Vault of Iacon with the Autobots and Decepticons fighting over each new discovery. New characters introduced in season 2 include the Autobot Smokescreen, the Decepticons Shockwave and Dreadwing, and a swarm of Insecticons.

This series is awesome. I love the darker and more serious tone this show takes on. A lot of “realism” is put into Transformers Prime. Jack, Miko and Rafael have formed strong bonds with the Autobots and, in turn, the Autobots have formed a bond with their human friends. For instance, Bulkhead is severely injured in a fight with an Insecticon for another relic. Miko is deeply saddened by this and climbs onto her friend as he lay unconscious and sits on his chest, vowing to never leave his side. This short scene was really touching as Miko truly cares for Bulkhead and couldn’t stand to see him hurt. There are other emotional moments such as Bumblebee losing his temper after Rafael is injured by Megatron and Arcee crying out in horror as she watches Airachnid torture her partner to death which leaves behind emotional scars. Transformers Prime has a solid storyline. Gone are the “problem of today” episodes of the original, traded for a fluid and well-structured storyline. Beast Wars had this same type of script.

However, the big plus for me is the reunion of the original voice actors for Megatron and Optimus Prime. Hearing Peter Cullen breathe life into the famed Autobot Leader on the small screen again brings back fond memories. The same goes for Frank Welker and his portrayal as the vicious Leader of the Decepticons. It is truly a joy to hear them voice their respective characters 26 years later. In Transformers Prime, Optimus and Megatron are more hardened than they were in the original series. Megatron’s true ruthlessness is brought out in this series as he will destroy any who oppose him including his own warriors. This is apparent in the second season finale when he maliciously shoots his then lieutenant Dreadwing after he refused to follow a direct order. Plus, he has plans that actually work and he does win a few battles. Optimus is still noble and upholds peace wherever possible; however, there are times when he has become frustrated. In the episode “Unicron Rises”, Optimus finally realizes that Decepticons and Autobots will never coexist and comes to the conclusion that the only way to end the war is with Megatron’s destruction. He then begins to mow down Decepticon troops without mercy in his search for their ruler. Another emotional moment is when the Autobots lose the Omega Keys to Starscream. Optimus chases the rogue Decepticon down but he manages to escape through a Ground Bridge. Optimus yells in rage, angry that their only chance to restore Cybertron has been lost.

The first season ended on an impressive note by introducing Unicron. The second season finale played out in epic fashion with a shocking end. Megatron has all four Omega Keys and leads his troops through the Space Bridge to Cybertron to open the Omega Lock after learning its location. With help from Dreadwing who brings them the Forge of Solas Prime, the Autobots set off to stop the Decepticons and acquire the Omega Keys once again. An epic battle ensues with the Autobots utilizing various relics they found in the series first season. After regaining the Omega Keys and decimating Megatron’s army, Optimus leads the Autobots to the Omega Lock. However, their victory is short lived when Soundwave, Starscream and Knockout transport to Cybertron with three captives—Jack, Miko and Rafael. They are forced to relinquish the keys in exchange for their lives. Megatron then forces his enemies to watch as he opens to Omega Lock and target the Earth, threatening to turn the planet into a new Cybertron. Now here’s a throwback to the classic episode “The Ultimate Doom” where Optimus must make a difficult choice. Sacrifice Earth for the sake of Cybertron or doom their home world to save their adopted planet. Not wanting to see the same fate befall the Earth, Optimus destroys the Omega Lock and escapes with his Autobots and the children.

At the Autobot Base, Ratchet is distraught and upset over the destruction of the one thing that can save their planet. During his rant, an emergency call from Agent Fowler alerts the Autobots to the surface. There, they discover the Megatron did succeed in constructing his fortress right next door to the Autobot base. An epic battle erupts. Unfortunately, the Autobots are outnumbered and are forced back inside their base. With a full-scale Decepticon assault outside, there is only one course of action—they must abandon their base. While Agent Fowler and Wheeljack, who heroically shows up to take part in the blazing air battle, deal with the Decepticons, the Autobots make their escape to destinations unknown. Optimus Prime stays behind to ensure his followers are safe. Outside, Wheeljack is shot down by Starscream. Then, the base is destroyed with Optimus still inside. Both of their fates are unknown. The last image of Prime is his hand sticking out from under the rubble of the destroyed base.

I am more than ready to see what is in store for the third season of Transformers Prime. Hopefully there will be more introductions to new characters and, who knows, maybe Sue Blu, who voiced Arcee in the animated movie and the original series, will lend her docile tones to a new character. Maybe another cast member from the original series will join Peter Cullen and Frank Welker. I would like it to be Jazz. What is confirmed for the third season is the return of another familiar character—Predaking. And rumor has it that Soundwave may actually speak. That would be awesome, especially if Frank is behind him. Whatever happens, I will definitely be watching and enjoying Transformers Prime just as I have with the original Transformers series.

Peter Cullen and Frank Welker together again!

NEWS EDITION #11 - TRANSFORMERS SPLITS IN 2, IMAGE EXPANDS DIGITAL BOOKS, DC SELLS OUT ALL AND AVENGERS REASSEMBLE!!!

Ah. News this week. Yes. We are back in action. And there is much to tell this week. Enjoy.

TRANSFORMERS DEATH & REBORN . . .. INTO TWINS

Top story this week is that Transformers is going through a lot of changes right now. Why? Cause at this moment, Transformers is dealing with two storylines under "Chaos." Recently started in issue 24 of IDW's ongoing series. The odd numbers will be telling the story called "Police Action", which was original titled "The Last Story on Earth" featuring Bumblebee, Prowl, Ultra Magnus & Spike Witwicky and it's first part started with Transformers #25. The even numbers has "Chaos" proper which features Optimus Prime, Rodimus and most of the other Autobots dealing with Galvatron's growing army. The storylines will reach it's opus and things will change.
Originally, after Chaos, Transformers #125 was supposed to be the last Transformers issue of 2011. That is no longer the case as it, and the team of Simon Furman & Andrew Wildman is no longer going to be coming back. (Me: BOOO!) What is coming is surprising . . . and exciting for some as IDW announced the future of the Transformers franchise after Chaos.
First, will be the Death of Optimus Prime one shot which will follow directly from the events of Chaos. Once the one shot is out, the Transformers title will be relaunched into 2 separate titles. The events of Chaos will set up the new series with Costa ending his run after Chaos.
John Barber, IDW editor stated this:

James is going to end up writing one of the ongoings. I'm going to be writing the other -- that was in place before I became editor.

The Death of Optimus Prime one shot will be written by John Barber and James Roberts with art by Nick Roche. Following that, Barber and artist Andrew Griffith will work on the new ongoing Transformers: Robots in Disguise. On the flipside, Roberts and Roche will work on the other new ongoing, Transformers: More Than Meets the Eye. During both series, the non aligned Transformers will have to look at Cybertron and decide what side they are on. And the new era of Transformers is on the horizon in 2012 in IDW.

IMAGE COMICS SAME DAY DIGITAL EXPENSION

Issued statement this past Monday by Image Comics announced that they will offer the majority of their line of books same day as print. The move will have Image Comics having most of their books on services such as ComiXology and Graphic.ly the same day as they come out. And while Image Comics have had  a few comics same to print, now they were going with the vast majority of their books. With the deals with both digital distributors, Image Comics will be available in multiple platforms, such as Androids, the NOOKcolor and Amazon Kindle

CEO of ComiXology,  David Steinberger commented on the move:

Image Comics was one of the first to publish a comic the same day digitally as print with Robert Kirkman’s The Walking Dead, and that turned out great for all involved. With one of the most diverse selections, we are excited to power their digital initiatives as they publish more of their top comics digitally the same day as print.”

Here are the titles that will become digital:

 - Chew
 - The Infinite
 - Marksmen
 - The Last of the Greats
 - Severed
 - Moriarty
 - Pilot Season Books
 - SkullKickers
 - Red Guther
 - Red Spike
 - Vescell

Image Publisher, Eric Stephenson added:

For years, print comics have been dependent on a single distribution network, so it's interesting to be a position to utilize a variety of different digital platforms,” said Image Comics Publisher Eric Stephenson in a press release. “As digital comics continue to become a greater concern, it's important to embrace as many different options as possible.”

The change is slated to take place this month.

AVENGERS NEW LINE UP REVEALED . . . IN TIME FOR THE RETURN OF THE DARK AVENGERS?!

Ah yes, some non X-related news. In the aftermath of fear itself, Captain America Steve Rogers decides to reshuffle the Avengers line up a bit. Brian Michael Bendis has hinted all summer that there would be a big roster change with the Avengers and it shall come to pass in this months Avengers #18. Captain America is hand picking this new roster. Feast your eyes the new Avengers line up:

Captain America : No brainer. After the events of Fear Itself and losing Bucky Barnes for a second time (and seemingly for good this time), Steve is back in the for front leading the Avengers directly and not through proxy with Maria Hill. Please note that Cap has been increasing his levels of badass steadily since Civil War. (No, I don't count his death and the good Captain was actually made enough to curse during Fear Itself #6.)

Iron Man: No brainer there. While Steve & Tony have not seen eye to eye on many things for a long time, they still respect each other and have been rebuilding their relationship since this Avengers volume started.

Hawkeye: Sporting a look that is more similar to his Ultimates counterpart, the archer is a main fixture to the team and is welcomed by most fans.

Protector: A carryover from the previous team, Noh-Varr has come a long way in his road to redemption. Yet, this is the same man that tortured some of the Runaways and Young Avengers during Civil War. How far has he really come. Especially with a certain new member on the team.

Wolverine: He's Wolverine. And him being an Avenger is VERY different from him being an X-Man and writers have made that very clear now. He's still pulling triple duty with the New Avengers & his X-Men team. So, this team gives him something else that in many ways gives him some kind of purification from all his bloody business with Uncanny X-Force. Whoops I guess his pulling Quadro-duty.

Spiderwoman: Also on the previous line up, she has recently seen much character development since Avengers 12.1 issue as well as just starting a romance with teammate Hawkeye. Is Jessica Drew the rebound woman or is this gonna be something else? Little remembered fact, when Hawkeye first split from Mockingbird . ..  he was dating ANOTHER Spiderwoman, the new Madame Web Julia Carpenter. Makes you wonder right? Still, Jessica has been coming to her own here and Avengers gives her a new dimension. It helps that she's got her best friend joining the team but we'll get to her in a minute.

Spiderman: Many have argued but Spiderman and Avengers (and the New Avengers) really fits Peter extremely well. It gives him new friends who actually get a better understanding of him (especially now with Spider-Island). Peter has stood out as a great member of the team. What will this new line up bring out of him with Peter working directly with Steve Rogers? Time will tell.

Ms. Marvel: Carol's been doing great in the New Avengers, with her other BFF, Jessica Jones-Cage. Now, she is being put on the A-team. Is she pulling double duty? Who knows but with her interactions with Jessica Drew (other best friend aforementioned) have been entertaining . . . even warning Spiderwoman of her attraction to Hawkeye might not be the best for her. Carol has stood with these heroes on several occasions and has done well with each of them. Welcome back Carol.

Vision: Being with the Young Avengers and with the brain patterns of Iron Lad (aka a young pre-evil Kang the Conqueror) has made this Vision a bit different from his predecessor. Plus, his recent relationship with Stature has seemingly fizzed . .. by the guy who's brain he copied no less. What a reversal of fortune. As Vision comes back, this is a very different character who doesn't really know these characters like he used to. How will he fit and what will he do alongside the Avengers when the eventual return of Kang happens . . . after the Ultron War that has been hinted since the first storyline in this volume.

Black Panther: T'Challa . . . oh T'Challa. He's been getting a lot of attention from Marvel consistently for over a decade now and fans are eating it up. He's been doing well since taking over the Man Without Fear, recently redubbed The Most Dangerous Man Alive. And his marriage to Storm has been given a lot of positive fanfare (even though they've barely been together for over a year now). The recent popularity of Avengers: The Earth's Mightiest Heroes has only increased the former monarch's visibility and favor among fan. A brilliant tactician and inventor in his own mind, T'Challa will give Peter and Tony a fresh perspective on their ideas.

Which is good cause they are together just in time to see Norman Osborn regroup H.A.M.M.E.R. to begin a dangerous assault on the Avengers and New Avengers. And Norman will be back with a new set of Dark Avengers. No clues as to who they are yet but Bendis has been this since the beginning of the new New Avengers volume. How will the Avengers (& New Avengers) handle this new threat? It started with New Avengers 16.1 and continues. Welcome back Avengers!!

DC SELLS OUT ALL 52 #1s

Short but sweet, DC Comics has sold out of every single issue of their new 52 #1s that came out last month and ALL are getting 2nd Printings. Heck, Justice League # 1 is selling so well, it is getting 4 printings . . . 4 printings. The 2nd printing of Justice League #1 just come out last week and the other two will be out within this month. Now, let's see how their #2s sell as stores have ordered large amounts of the second issues of the new series. Plus, Huntress #1 and Shade, the Changing Man # 1 miniseries will be debuting this month as well with ads for DC Comics still over the tv, papers and internet. Good job DC. Let's see you keep it up.

#3 - TRANSFORMERS: For All Mankind/Things Fall Apart

Welcome to Comic Book Clash were characters, teams & companies clash for supremacy! And how shall we continue that? Why by going towards the independents. We are going to look into some of the books that make the independent scene wet itself with excitement. And which are we tackling first, why none other than IDW’s new Transformers Ongoing series. Yes. Transformers cause they are more than meets the eye.

TRANSFORMERS
(Ongoing) Issues #1-6
Story Arc(s):  . . . For All Mankind, Things Fall Apart Parts 1-5
Written by Mike Costa ; Penciled by Don Figueroa
IDW Publishing

Transformers have been around for nearly 30 years now. Starting out as a hybrid of Diacone, Transformers origins lay with both Japanese & American creators. And yes, I do consider it anime. The popularity of the original (Generation 1) Transformers was so massive that Marvel Comics started a comic book series. It went from mini to ongoing, gaining so much popularity over seas that Marvel UK made its own stories, instead of reprint American stories after a while. Over the decades, the Transformers property seemed to root itself in pop culture and into the lives of at least 2 generations. The property has gone through massive changes but its longevity is UNDENIABLE. With nearly over 700 episodes of cartoons, several movies, specials and conventions all over the globe, Transformers is truly a marvel.
Over the last five years, IDW gained the license to the popular franchise after Dreamwave crashed thanks to artist and extortionist, according to many, Pat Lee. Since then, IDW slowly but surely built up the Transformers comic book franchise with a series of minis, followed by an extremely popular maxiseries (Transformers: All Hail Megatron) where the Decepticons actually won and took over Earth for a time. Earth starts to moblize its own rebellion in the form of Gundam sized robots in a group called Skywatch while the Autobots fight back and Spike seemingly KILLS Megatron.  Yes. That is not a hoax. That is not a lie.

SPIKE WITWICKY KILLS MEGATRON.

Seemingly.

Anywho, after the Autobots and Skywatch defeat the Decepticon occupation of early, the evil faction disperses all over the galaxy, with a majority of them falling under the command of who else . . . Starscream. Who has the matrix. And all you really need to get this information, if you want to jump into the ongoing, is collect all those issues or get the Transformers Continuum: The Definitive Chronology that gives you a recap of all the IDW stories til now. Onto the new Ongoing.
Two years have passed since the end of  Transformers: All Hail Megatron Maxiseries, and Skywatch has full US Government backing. Their mission. To capture or destroy all Cybertronians, whether they be Autobot or Decepticon. The Decepticons are scattered about. And the Autobots are in hiding. Welcome to the beginning of the new Transformers ongoing.
The series opens to telling us all these information till we find the Autobots, particularly Prowl begins to watch Skywatch capture Breakdown. Prowl tries to stop Skywatch only to find that . . .
IT’S A TRAP!!!

Been wanted to use that for a while. Anyway, Spike and Skywatch were seemingly waiting for Prowl and capture him too, trapping him in his vehicle form. Meanwhile, Optimus Prime gets into a heated argument . . . with Hot Rod. Yes. Hot Rod arguing with Optimus. Let the haters of Hot Rod emerge. Optimus states that he wants Wheeljack to come up with technology that will make them immune to Skywatch’s tech that makes Cybertronian’s stuck in one form but Hot Rod argues why the Autobots are still doing on Earth. Optimus replies that they are there to make sure the Decepticons don’t come back, that they should stay hidden to protect the Earth. Hot Rod yells that the Decepticons are NOT coming back and that they are being under attack but the humans who they are suppose to be protecting. Hot Rod is antsy and they need to save Prowl. So Optimus orders Hot Rod to lead a squad to rescue Prowl from Skywatch. Ironhide gets ordered to go along to make sure Hot Rod doesn’t go to far. And that turns into a frelling mess, as Prowl does get broken out but Skywatch starts a fight and KILL Ironhide.  Seriously. These sons of bitches KILL Ironhide. All this with narration by Optimus himself that when the other Autobots come back with the dead carcass of the classic G1 character. This, in response, throws Optimus Prime into a depression and he QUITS the Autobots, stating he is no longer fit to be in command and gives himself over to Skywatch. Wait . . .whut?
After a very civil conversation between Optimus and Spike, Optimus is locked up. Back with the Autobots, Hot Rod is fed up and wants off of Earth. He says he is tired of the humans and that Optimus turned his back on them. Cliffjumper states they should hold an election on a new Leader but Hot Rod wants none of that. Hot Rod says he is tired of paying for stuff that Megatron did just cause humanity is afraid and says he follows no one. Hot Rod states he plans on building a new spaceship and getting off  Earth and anyone is welcome to go with him. He states that he figures that he is not waiting for the humans to shut him down and park him next to Prime. So Hot Rod leads a group of Autobots, including Prowl who is technically supposed to be in charge, away to build a new ship to get off planet. The rest of the Autobots stay. First place Hot Rod’s group goes is to Omega Supreme and ask the giant rocket ship & base Autobot about leaving Earth. But Omega refuses to leave unless Optimus gives him the order. While this exchange is happening, Swindle, Thundercracker, Scrapper and several other Decepticons that did not leave with Starscream are overhearing Hot Rod & Omega Supreme’s exchange. Omega tells his Autobots about them and they begin fighting only see Hot Rod & Swindle having an interesting exchange as to why are they even fighting; the war is over and they all want off planet.
Meanwhile, unlike what Hot Rod had though, Spike actually gives Optimus respectful treatment while trying the pump the old Autobot leader for information. Yet, Optimus sees through it and merely states he is doing what he can to protect his soldiers which Spike comes to respect. The elections ends with Bubblebee getting voted in as the new leader then Ultra Magnus showing up on a spaceship.
It seems before Hot Rod & Prowl defected, Prowl had called in Ultra Magnus as standard procedure with an officers murder. So yes, playing NCIS investigator is none other than Ultra Magnus, who makes the Autobots uncomfortable and makes good ole’ Bumblebee into a Bumblemouth; the smaller Autobot falling all over himself. Ultra Magnus makes the other Autobots so uncomfortable that he ends up causing another group of Autobots, this time lead by Blurr & Hoist to defect. Great job Ultra Magnus.
Hot Rod talks Jetfire and convinces him to help him and his band to build the spaceship . . . but reluctantly as Jetfire as he sees Swindle and his group of Decepticons. Meanwhile, to make Optimus talk, Skywatch catch all but Blurr of Hoist’s little band of Autobot. Swindle & Hot Rod chatted some about this being a new age and asked Hot Rod’s permission to get some more Decepticons to help with the construction. After some coaxing, Hot Rod approves of it and Swindle proclaims Hot Rod a new leader of a new era, Rodimus Prime.
Wait?! WHAT?! First, Hot Rod said no leaders but he is obviously in charge of this group. And now, after all that bullshit, Swindle is the one to make Hot Rod say he’s Rodimus Prime. FUCK YOU SWINDLE!!!
Thundercracker continues to lament over why fighting the Autobots, the war and all this bullshit about leaving. He goes over what had happened to him between the end of All Hail Megatron and now. Spike gets depressed cause even with the other Autobots, Optimus has not said much. The Autobots under Hot Rod’s little band are uncomfortable with the Decepticons but are working hard on the space ship till NCIS, I mean, Ultra Magnus shows up, conducting the investigation on Ironhide. Hot Rod . . . excuse me, Rodimus Prime chats with Ultra Magnus about the operation till he states that Rodimus cannot build his spaceship cause he does not have leave from his commanding officer. Prowl steps in saying that he is next in line in terms of succession and stated that he granted Hot Rod . . . Rodimus an emergency license. Then Ultra Magnus sees Swindle and some Decepticons working with Autobots and accuses Rodimus and the others of treason. Rodimus tells Ultra Magnus to kiss off and that he does not have any real authority here.
Spike and Optimus have a heart to heart about what Optimus and the Autobots have been doing on Earth and why Optimus turned himself over. The two trade over ideals on what makes a great leader and the differences and similarities of their wars, getting a better understanding of each other. Magnus runs back to Autobot HQ, where Magnus asks assistance of Bumblebee’s troops to arrest the Deceptions . . . and Rodimus and his Autobots.
Spike decides to drive Breakdown to where Optimus and the other Autobots that were captured are being held. Yet, the help that Swindle was thinking of, two more Stunticons, knocked Spike out of Breakdown and freed him. Ultra Magnus, with Bumblebee’s crew, returns to face off against Rodimus.  Ultra Magnus says he is arresting him and his crew from treason while Rodimus says that there aren’t anymore sides. Rodimus and Ultra Magnus continue to debate when suddenly Swindle says he will take care of things and then we find that all 5 Stunticons are together . . . and merge into Menasor.
It seems the main reason for Magnus’s hostilities before against Swindle was not only because he was a Decepticon, but he stole Gestalt (aka Combiner) Technology. And yes, Swindle installed it into the Stunticons, making IDW’s debut of the Stunticon gestalt.     Menasor’s attack on the Autobots attracts Skywatch. Spike and Optimus finish their conversation as Spike admits that he ordered lethal action against the Autobots just to prove a point. Out of respect for Optimus and the situation with Menasor, Spike basically drafts Optimus to help Skywatch against Menasor. While Menasor has Ultra Magnus in hand, the individual Stunticons argue what to do with him. Swindle goats as Menasor seems ready to kill Magnus when Optimus Prime transforms into truck mode and literally drops on top of Swindle. The other Decepticons begin fighting as Scrapper holds Bumblebee by his throat, only to get blasted by Thundercracker. Wait . .. whut?
Thundercracker tells Bumblebee that he looks for honor, unlike most of the others and plans to help Rodimus. Bumblebee notices the lack of cohesion between the Combaticons so he orders Optimus to break them apart. Optimus tells Bumblebee to give the others the order and does so. Skywatch, Optimus and the Autobots forces combined defeat Menasor. When Skywatch turns to the Autobots, they look to Optimus. Optimus in turn says talk to their new leader, Bumblebee. Bumblebee and Spike work out a deal to work with Skywatch with the Autobots being free as long as they share Cybertronian tech with them. Magnus comes back to the picture after being damaged from the fight wanting to find Swindle. When he finds out Swindle got away, Ultra Magnus gets on his high horse again and tries to arrest Rodimus. The Autobots that were with Rodimus complain that they were fine till he had added the Decepticons to their plans. Before Rodimus can answer & Magnus can try to arrest him, Bumblebee puts Ultra Magnus in his place. Bumblebee goes as far as saying that on Earth, Magnus answers to him and that they have to start accepting things as they see them, not as they are remembered; and until they get the Matrix back and it chooses it next leader, Bumblebee is the head honcho.

To mirror Silverstreaks reaction: WOW.

Bumblebee turns to talk to Rodimus, who steals Ultra Magnus’s craft and goes off to space, ending the storyline.

CLASH TACTICS:

So yeah. Transformers ongoing. How do I feel about it? Let me say that the overall story was both interesting and engaging. It gave an interesting new twist in the relationships of the Autobots, the Decepticons and humans. The war, at least for the majority of the issues, is three fold. Yet, it becomes very scrambled very quickly. Hot Rod’s evolution was oddly fine and well thought out. It gave a great new twist on a classic character that while some people hated, others respected. That seemed to be a very big occurrence across the board. Giving new and fresh dimensions on classic characters to make the read interesting and fun. From Optimus Prime’s attitude of respecting life making him give up leadership and willingly be imprisoned by humans Rodimus’s attitude towards humanity and their situation to becoming a strong leader that is kind of an ass. Bumblebee’s evolution to passive to a new and worthy leader of the Autobots.
I am particularly annoyed at Ultra Magnus which I give kudos to Mike Costa. He turned a rather bland imitation of Optimus Prime into an annoying, by the book, condescending ass. The last time I remember Ultra Magnus being this interesting was in the Transformers anime, Transformers: Robots In Disguise (aka Transformers: Car Robots). From his first appearance to the Autobots, to the last issue of the storyline, Ultra Magnus was this driven, through, anal prick of a cop. And as annoyed as I am at the character, that makes Ultra Magnus that much more memoriable.
Spike definitely conveys a lot whenever we see him. He looks at the war and the Cybertronians and really learns how different the Autobots and Decepticons are. His relationship that builds with Optimus makes for some great interplay and character moments. This Spike is more daring than the original and seemingly, a bit more edgy. He is driven yet compassionate.
Thundercracker went on about nobility and what this war has cost him over time. It gave him a great new dimension. There were a lot of great character changes that seem true to the original characters but a great evolutionary jump from previous personalities or just great reboots.
Optimus Prime taking Ironhide’s death so very hard after being questioned so much by Hot Rod made a great set up for where Optimus ends up by the end of the story. He is working on redeeming himself; to the humans and his Autobots.
Yet, while the character interplay was well done and the story itself was well paced and engaging; there were some gripes I had. Why . . .why . . . did Prowl decide to stay a second in command or take the back seat when he, by his own admittance, was supposed to take the reins as leader in Optimus’s absence. WHY?
I understand why the election happened if that had started after Prowl left but they were talking elections before Hot Rod and Prowl left. What kind of cooky crap is that? Costa saves himself with Prowl explaining why he joins Hot Rod, yet a lot of this storyline happens because Prowl decides to not be in charge. And if we are continuing to talking about following succession, who was supposed to be in charge after Prowl? Hot Rod?
The election just seems like an odd choice. The Autobots clearly are running things like a military operation. So why an election? Then there is the other thing that bothers me but not sure whether it is good or bad. Swindle being the one to coin Hot Rod as Rodimus Prime. There is a lot of what Swindle was saying was true. Hot Rod was ushering in a new era. Problem was that Hot Rod (or Rodimus Prime) is so short sighted when it came to the over all big picture. His biggest concern is survival and prestige as he takes the name Rodimus Prime with little debate; he clearly thinks little of Optimus after he turns himself in. These character traits were both entertaining and well done but still somewhat off. And getting Rodimus Prime from Swindle, as a reader and as a long time Transformers fan, felt very dirty.
Artistically, the book looks pretty damn good. Don Figueroa has a new art style for this new ongoing. At first glance, I was not a fan. Yet, as the issues went on, the new style really grew on me. The humans were not too bad and were distinct enough to tell one person from another. Yet, the transformers were hyper detailed. It looks at if Don Figueroa has fused his old style with a bit more attention to detail, like the live action movie Transformers. There is more detail on the faces and bodies and it is noticeable with each panel. Optimus’s body has gears and large windows as well as a large wheels. The Transformers all look as if they are detailed and more alien than before. J. Brown did an amazing job giving vibrant colors to Don Figueroa’s pencils. The backgrounds are colorful and lively. The humans are well toned. The transformers look amazing. Heck, Hot Rod is colored like the awesome character that he is and not the fusha mess he was in comic books past. Figueroa needs to work on his humans a bit more.
Transformers ongoing draws people in with a new status quo and a brand new look at the Autobot, Decepticon war. Humans react very differently this time, with some of them still against any Cybertronian. There are some weird inconsistencies with the story but nothing that takes away from the storyline. Costa will have to learn to be careful with any future storylines he tells to make sure there is not anymore story hiccups. And Figueroa’s humans just need a little more time with them but over all, a great starting point for new and old friends alike.

That is why I am giving Transformers Ongoing: . . . For All Mankind & Things Fall Apart enter in an Intercontinental Contenders spot.
