Dead Or Alive 5 review
Reviewed by Jeremias de Leon
Dead Or Alive 5
Developed by Team Ninja
Published by TecmoKoei
Dead or Alive 5 (DOA5) is the latest in the 3D fighting game series and the first without series creator Tomonobu Itagaki. The cast from the previous Dead Or Alive games returns along with new faces Rig and Mila and guest stars Pai, Akira and Sarah from Virtua Fighter.
Gameplay:
Dead or Alive 5 keeps the basic mechanics of the previous games with the 4 button layout which has the following commands "punch, kick, block/hold, and throw". The gameplay is slowed down for more methodical fighting, but that isn't to say it moves anywhere near a snail's pace. The fights are still pretty frenetic though holds don't have to come out near as fast as they had to in DOA4. If you mistime holds by going too fast you will be punished.
Each character plays differently enough that you won't feel like you're not playing the same few character types in different skins. Especially the Virtua Fighter characters. The story mode gives tutorials on all the mechanics in the game but it isn't necessary to play casually without any headaches, the game can be as deep or as casual as you want.
Content:
In fighting games instead of story we'll go with content, because fighting games, although having stories, are not played for them normally. But that isn't to say it shouldn't have a story as it can be a good way for casual players to have fun with the game. With that out of the way let's see what DOA5 has.
There is a story mode in Dead Or Alive 5 that lasts for about three hours, maybe more if you decided to go after all the bonus missions and you are bound to run into one or two that will have you be stuck for a while. There are the standard arcade modes which have one on one and tag battle courses. There's also survival mode which is also a standard for fighting games. Unique to Dead Or Alive is a mode for taking pictures during a fight which is just called Photo Mode you can control the camera and pause at the exact time you want to take the picture. Not really groundbreaking or anything but it's neat. Of course there is online play, on day 1 the net-code wasn't that great and matches I played were a bit laggy but there was a patch to address this. Unfortunately I haven't tried online after patching the game but from what was seen during live streams of online play the patch did improve things quite a bit.
Presentation:
The menus in the game are very clean looking nothing too spectacular. Navigating them isn't a pain. The stages are pretty well done especially the stages taking place outdoors. The character models which has been the selling point for the game, especially the female characters, look great. Their faces look good but it doesn't seem like they animate that much though. Also about the character models is that during the fight they will start to sweat and get dirt on them during the fight. Depending on what they're wearing the sweat can drench their clothes making them see through. Lots of attention like this make the game pretty visually appealing. Though the jiggle physics still seem to just be nowhere near reality. Then again, they never were. But the over sexualization of the female characters has been toned down. Yes, they can still wear skimpy outfits and yes they still jiggle but the breast sizes have been reduced for some characters and not every character has a skimpy outfit. Only characters that big breasts make sense for have larger bust sizes. The male characters look good too though, Ryu Hayabusa looks great and this has to be the best Akira and the rest of the Virtua Fighter characters have ever looked.
Verdict:
This game is great for casual players and for hardcore players in the FGC. With bonus missions in the story mode helping out people that do want to learn the game and all the arcade mode routes and online play that's been improved this game is definitely worth picking up.
I give this an 8.5 out of 10

Opinion Piece: Injustice Gods Among Us
Special thanks to Steven Albano of Under Polaris for suggesting to write this article.
These are my opinions (and mine alone) of Injustice: Gods Among Us. With the game getting more and more reveals as we head closer to it's release next year, it seems a good as time as any to talk about what's been going on with this game.
From what I've seen in trailers, the latest being the Green Arrow reveal trailer, the game seems to harken back to Mortal Kombat 3 with it's faster, longer combos. Almost like a mix of the new Mortal Kombat with Mortal Kombat 3. If Netherrealm can find a way to make the game so it can use the faster pace of 3 but with the thought out and not as twitchy button presses as the new one this can be an extremely fun game. One thing I'm a bit concerned about however, are what appears to look like danger zones like Dead Or Alive where characters can be knocked or grappled or into environmental hazards for bonus damage. While it can be fun, I personally feel it takes away from competitive play, for instead of knowing what combos to use and when to block you might just lose someone who was just able to knock you onto a car. That isn't to say I don't see an argument where it can be competitive. You can say knowing how to keep an opponent in a certain spot and making sure you're able to go where you want to go and make sure you can't be taken where you don't want to go is a new layer of strategy. I just hope there is an option to turn those off, and that we don't see too much of it in tournaments, if this game gets picked up by major tournaments.
The character roster in this game is something else I want to look at. I believe not every character has been announced yet. So far we have:
Batman
Catwoman
Cyborg
Flash
Green Arrow
Green Lantern
Harley Quinn
Joker
Nightwing
Solomon Grundy
Superman
Wonder Woman
Seeing that list I really hope this game doesn't turn out to be "Batman The Fighting Game: Featuring a couple other people" as I noticed most of the characters are mostly Batman's enemies and allies. But, again that fear of mine is probably unfounded as it's possible the Batman characters were just announced first due to their popularity and we'll see some of the rogue's galleries for the other heroes make it in the game. I'm pretty certain we'll see all the members of the Justice League make it to the game, even Aquaman. Now, here's where I make an Aquaman joke but I really don't feel I can right now since the comics are actually good right now. Seriously, I'm not kidding. Go ahead, read those you might be pleasantly surprised. Anyway, moving on, the roster still looks solid even with the current majority being Batman characters. It's great to see Green Arrow and Cyborg be in a fighting game. Solomon Grundy is a great addition and mainstays Superman, Wonder Woman and Green Lantern are of course welcome.
Now on to the look of the game. The game definitely remembers to keep the feel of the comic book characters alive. For the most part (re: Green Lantern's suit) every character has most, if not all, of their iconic designs so you'll know they are what the game says they are. Though in some parts, especially in the promotional artwork, it seems that they've added the color schemes from every modern game into the game's visual style. Now, for your information I'll give you the list of the color scheme of every modern game right now:
brown
and sometimes gray
The colors of each character is never taken away but the browns do wash them out however, and I wish they'd take some of that away and let the other colors shine through even more. I know this is a modern 3d fighting game, but it's a modern 3d fighting game based off of comic book characters and these comic book characters are colorful.
Lastly, who designed Green Lantern's suit? Seriously? It looks like a suit that would be in a Joel Schumacher Green Lantern movie. What I'm getting at is the abs, why would the suit have abs? Or is that just his muscles showing through the suit? Also that looks to much like a jock strap on his pelvis, that... area... just doesn't look right. I also don't like the green lines on his legs that I'm assuming are lines made from his power. They seem out of place when looking at the rest of the suit.
My final thoughts on the game however, are that I'm looking forward to this game. Despite my over critical eye when talking about this game I actually do think this will be really fun. I'm just not overly excited right now. If I see good things with the roster and I see hands on gameplay I can go from just looking forward to it, to being very excited.

Who came up with that suit for GL? |

Top 10 Fighting Games that need a comic book
Welcome, I'm Jeremias de Leon back with another countdown. This time it's a different series. I'm looking at the top games that need a comic book series, Since I'm such a huge fighting game fan and since I can do a top 10 list that only has fighting games I've decided to split this article into two. One that's about fighting games specifically and one covering other games.
Understood? The non-fighting game list will be next week. Alright now with that out of the way let's do this.
10.
Killer Instinct
For a game that's captured the imaginations of a lot of people it's hard to believe none of those people were comic book creators. With the kind of storyline that Killer Instinct had including mega corporations, evil world ending creatures, robots, and werewolves you'd think this would've been easy to write a comic for. Especially during the 90s when this first came out. But even now it could work.
Bloody Roar was a fighting game that had more story elements added into it than most other fighting games. Especially seen in part 2 when story was added (I believe) and yet it hasn't been seen in other forms of medium. You know, a lot of people would love to see Bloody Roar come back as evidenced when a fake twitter account claiming to be Hudson Soft announced a "new Bloody Roar" game had a lot of people jumping for joy... including me. If Konami who now owns Hudson is still unsure about Bloody Roar a comic series would be good for checking the "hype gauge" so to speak.
Dead or Alive has a ton of doujinshi (fan made manga) but to my knowledge no official comics or manga. Dead or Alive has a story that concerns Ryu Hayabusa of Ninja Gaiden, an awesome Bruce Lee wannabe named Jann Lee, lots of tough and sexy women... how does this not have a comic!? This would sell so well among the male demographic of well, any age. Especially with the newest Dead Or Alive set to hit stores next month it would be a great way to re-introduce these characters to a new audience. It also would help dispel the reputation it has as something that's only about busty women with a new, official, story and action based comic. Instead of all those pornographic non-official ones floating around. Also especially for the reason that the sexiness of the female characters is downplayed in the most recent games. They're still there, and they can still wear swimsuits but trust me, it's a lot less overt than in previous games.
A game made by SNK that featured a futuristic South Town that got renamed to Jipang city. For fans of the previous SNK fighters this game should get a comic series. It has the descendant of Kim Kaphwan, someone who apparently knew Terry Bogard the comic would be very interesting. I have a feeling there would be a lot of references to the fates of the characters from the Fatal Fury and Art Of Fighting series. Plus the actual playable characters are pretty cool the main character fights with a BOOMERANG and that's pretty hype,
Skullgirls is currently capturing the attention of quite a few people, with it's off the wall characters. The game also has a story mode that's already like a comic book and an interesting one at that. This one honestly seems like a no brainer, like Dead Or Alive it would sell well with males and the art style is very interesting I'm sure the character designer would love a chance to work on a comic book. So give him the chance... whoever is in charge of making those decisions.
Power Stone has no official comic!? That I know of anyway. I've seen some Udon people do art of Power Stone art but I don't think they've released a comic. Fans of adventure movies, comics and tv shows would love Power Stone. It has globe trotting mystical artifacts, plane riding, kung fu, beautiful women, strong men I don't see how this wouldn't appeal to a broader audience than other video game based comics.
So you've got mecha that looks like it's from Layzner, and other real robot anime beating the crap out of each other. On top of that you've got some really quirky memorable characters. Especially Jin Saotome, the only character from Cyberbots to be in other games most notably Marvel Vs Capcom 1 and 2. It would be an absolute fun read if given to the right writer, someone who knows not to take things too seriously preferably.
The Last Blade series of games are fantastic. They were made when SNK was doing other great fighters like Mark Of The Wolves and the gameplay is superb. But Last Blade didn't just have great gameplay it had a story that was pretty intriguing. Involving four people that have the power of the Four Symbols in east Asian mythology. The games had beautiful scenic stages, cool attacks and awesome characters. On top of that it's story involving mythology and history is interesting. Even though the games didn't have a story mode in their endings you can see that the characters actually had development. Their actions weren't so black and white and their motives weren't clear cut. Fans of Rurouni Kenshin and fantasy would love this story and it would make a fantastic comic.
Understood? The non-fighting game list will be next week. Alright now with that out of the way let's do this.
10.
Killer Instinct

It's crazy enough to work |
9.
Power Instinct
Power Instinct is one of those games that came out in the 90s that was basically just a clone of Street Fighter in terms of gameplay though it did have some unique things like the stage getting larger by knocking down some obstacles by smacking people through them. One thing that wasn't like the other clones was how quirky it was. The characters were definitely not generic and each one of them could make for an interesting comic book character. Heck, the female Italian strongwoman Angela Belti is interesting enough for a series. Following men she's in love with across the world and what not. Same could be said for that creepy old woman, a horror comic could be made with her. There's potential in this series.
Power Instinct
![]() |
One of those ones not a lot of people heard about |
8.
Bloody Roar
![]() |
For a fighting game that cared more about it's story than others it's kinda weird it never got a comic |
7.
Dead Or Alive
![]() |
So... much... doujinshi but where's an official story based comic? |
6.
Fu'un Series
![]() |
This is the series King Lion was introduced |
5.
Skullgirls
![]() |
It doesn't have a comic!? |
4.
Power Stone
![]() |
WELCOME TO THE ADVENTURE! Oh wait, wrong game |
3.
Cyberbots
![]() |
Jin Saotome's game |
2.
Tech Romancer
![]() |
Buy this game on Dreamcast, you won't be disappointed |
Where Cyberbots is an homage to mainly one type of mecha anime Tech Romancer is an homage to all types. From Gundam looking mecha, to Evangelion looking mecha, to a Mazinger type (called Kikaioh). It's all in here. It would be just insane reading a comic with all these different types of mecha in the same story. Plus Jin Saotome makes a cameo in this game! So if you really liked Cyberbots you can't say no to Tech Romancer. If you've read the webcomic Robot God Akamatsu then you basically know how a Tech Romancer comic would be like and that would be awesome.
1.
Last Blade

It needs more love |
Well, there I am with my latest countdown. What are your top fighting games that need a comic to be made? Heck, I'll even take the limiter of "hasn't had a comic made" and ask what fighting games need to have a comic made right now? As I know there are some fighters out there that would make great comics but their first attempts weren't so hot, or fallen into obscurity, but aren't on this list because they already do have comics.
Also, if you wish follow me on twitter @ikariradio and listen to my podcast the Ikaricast on iTunes. See you guys next time.
