Legends of Power, Week # 44 : Beware The Full Moon

LEGEND OF POWER - WEEK # 44
The Zenaku Saga
Power Rangers Wild Force

I did say this is the countdown of the 50 Greatest Power Rangers STORIES. Multi-parters are considered 1 story. I will NOT count whole seasons. That being said, this is the second multi-parter on here. Yet, this multi-parter lasted about 6 episodes.

Wild Force has started about a few months before. Since then, they found Cole (Rick Medina who was also Deker for PR Samurai) and found quite a few Wild Zords. The team seemed to have started to come together. Then, on one night, General Nyzer hatched a plan to bring out the Duke Org, Zenaku. Along with Jindrax and Toxica, it worked. Zenaku was freed on the night of a full moon. And Zenaku BEAT THE HELL OUT OF THE RANGERS.

Seriously, almost every match in the first 4 episodes, Zenaku was dominating them and the Wild Force barely escaped. And each time, they lost one of their secondary Wild Zords. The Wild Force was wondering what was going on.  And Princess Shayla told them that she remembered that he was defeated by the SIX Warriors. Whoa. Whoa. Whoa. WHOA. SIX Warriors. Since the series started, you said FIVE Ancient Warriors. WHAT DO YOU MEAN SIX?

After Shayla was kidnapped and noticed that Zenaku was bleeding and the fact that he can summon his own Wild Zords with a flute dagger, similar to Tommy’s but black and cresent shaped, the Rangers figured that he was once human. Zenaku was gaining his memories but Nyzer put the stop to that with some damn bug that flew into his brain …EWWWWWWWW.

The Rangers and Zenaku had a final battle … and with the help of Animus … found out that Zenaku was Merrick, the Sixth Ancient Warrior that used to do all sorts of naughty things with Shayla. Yet, after he is freed, he feels he’s not fit to join the Wild Force and does this Lone Wolf thing for several episodes.

This saga was both reminecent of Green With Evil yet with a different spin on it and the stakes seemingly much higher. We got a guy who was supposed to be fighting with the Wild Force, trapped by some freaky curse. We got a tragic love story. We got the Rangers having to get smarter and stronger over time in order to beat Zenaku  … hell, they ONLY beat Zenaku cause of some Deus Ex Machina. I’m NOT kidding!

The mystery of Zenaku was great and Zenaku himself was just AWESOME. I would have rather seen him stay as a main general. It also helps that he was voiced by Lex Lang, who was Sanosake in the Rurouni Kenshin Anime as well as Ecliptor in Power Rangers in Space. His weapons were awesome. His Wild Zords cool. And he was a BIG threat.

Yet, the Merrick story ended up being part of the reason it got bogged down. The fact that Shayla didn’t say 6 Ancient Warriors from the beginning was also a BIG boo boo storywise. It made it be more obvious that it was shoe-horned in. The saga as a whole was good but still some gaping flaws to it.

Hence why it made # 44.

NEXT WEEK: Pinocchio!
