Tarantino Brings 'Django Unchained' to DC

Announced mere hours ago at Comic-Con, prolific director Quentin Tarantino, will be doing a comic book adaption of  Django Unchained. Django Unchained is a western epic that set two years before the Civil War in the South. Django have a very harsh history with his masters which attracts the German-born bounty hunter, Dr. King Schultz. Schultz offers Django's freedom if he helps him catch the homicidal Brittle brothers. Django agrees but is focused on having his wife, who had been sold into the compound of Calvin Candie; where his plantation is turned into a hunting ground nicknamed 'Candyland' where slaves are the prey. The duo must face Calvin and his trusted slave, Stephen, in order to save Django's wife, Broomhilda with other adventures along the way.

The comic will not only  adapt the movie but will be the entire original screenplay for the movie, turned into a 5 issue miniseries.

Tarantino commented about the comic during Comic-Con today:

"We have worked out a situation where we're going to do a 'Django Unchained' comic. It's going to come out -- I think the first issue is going to come out a couple months before the movie opens and basically take the entire story of the film and do it as a comic book from beginning to end. What I'm really excited about -- not only do I love comic books, I always loved western comics in particular along with the superhero stuff. So I was really excited when it come up with doing a comic about the film. One of the things that I'm really excited about is that 'Django Unchained' is a big epic. When I write big epic scripts like 'Kill Bill,' there's a lot of stuff that doesn't make the movie because they're too f-ing big. They'd be four hour movies if I did everything that was in the script, so there always is this aspect that the script is this big literary piece that I'm always taking it out and changing it and transforming it to make it a movie by the time it's all finished. That's the process, I'm always adapting my movie every day, my unwieldy script into a movie every day as I do it, but what's really cool about doing a 'Django Unchained' comic book is that it's the entire script. Even though things might have changed in the movie, I might have changed something else, I might have dropped chapters, I might have dropped big pieces -- that will all be in the comic. The comic will literally be that very first draft of the script. All that material that didn't make the movie, all of that will be part of the piece. And I'm really excited about it. So, be looking out for 'Django Unchained' in a comic book store and 7 Eleven near you!"

The movie will feature Jamie Foxx as Django, Kerry Washington as Broomhilda, Christopher Waltz as Schultz, Leonardo DiCaprio as Calvin Candie and Samuel L. Jackson as Stephen. The movie hits theaters this Christmas.  Django Unchanged #1 will hit stores this November in both print & same-day digital.

COMICS ON SCREEN: IRON MAN 2 REVIEW

Iron Man 2 (2010) Review by Jeff Williams

Editor: Jeremias de Leon

With this month being Avengers month, todays review is on a sequel that feels more of a reminder of what's the shape of things to come, rather than a continuation of the original's plot. Distributed by Marvel Studios and Paramount Pictures, it's the 2010 film, Iron Man 2.

I personally feel conflicted when it comes to this particular sequel. While the director of 2008's Iron Man, Jon Favreau returns to helm the sequel and the cast from Iron Man return to their respective roles (excluding Terrance Howard as Lt. Rhodes and Jeff Bridges as Obadiah Stane not returning because of Howard's salary and Stane perishing at the end of Iron Man.) for the sequel.

The new additions to the cast, Mickey Rourke as Ivan Vanko "Whiplash" and Scarlett Johansson as Natasha Romanoff "Black Widow" are great additions to this already perfect cast. As mentioned earlier, due to Mr. Howard not reprising his role as Rhodey. His replacement is Don Cheadle. Cheadle is known from the Acadamy-award winning 2004 film "Hotel Rwanda".  From a personal view, I prefer Cheadle's portrayal as the character than I did with Howard's take on Rhodey.

The main problem that I have with this movie is, there's a good story in there but it wasn't fully developed. I like the idea of Stark slowly dying from his own creation and that showing his mortality, the different view points of Stark and Rhodes when it comes to the Iron Man suits and their use in the world, a villain that's sympathetic and understudying his actions and expanding the universe with the inclusion of Nick Fury and the Live-Action debut of Black Widow.

That main problem I mentioned earlier in this review starts to rear its ugly head. While I do like that they started to expand and connect this universe more, its the BIGGEST problem with this film. I feel that they [Marvel/Paramount] wanted to use this more as a visual marketing tool (i.e. "Watch Out WB! The Avengers Cometh!) than using it to expand the character of Tony/Iron Man, his conflicts and his relationships with the already existing characters, and that in turn hurt the character of Black Widow and her portrayal from Ms. Johansson.

If their is one thing that I've got to commend Favreau's directing in this, compared to the first film is that the fight scenes feel more fluid. While he did a great job with bring the character/world of Iron Man to the big screen, the fight scenes in Iron Man felt out of place and it somewhat shows in that film's third act.

In closing, while this sequel ins't on the same level as the first film. It's still an enjoyable time to have with friends.

Rating: 3.5/5

I would like to add, that while I did enjoy Sam Rockwell's performance as Justin Hammer; the characterization of Hammer was played over the top as joke rather then how he's portrayed in the comics, a rival to Stark and Stark Industries.

Also, I do acknowledge that the story itself was adapted from the "Armor Wars" arc from the comic, but if that was the route they wanted to take with this film they should have stuck with it.

NEWS EDITION # 34 - AVENGERS MOVIE BREAKS RECORDS, THE END OF SWEETTOOTH

Welcome to a new  News Edition for the Week of May 9th, 2012. Sit back and enjoy the ride.

AVENGERS ... BREAKS MOVIE RECORDS!

by Frankie Rodriguez

Okay. Months and months and even years of speculation came to an end on May 4th as the Avengers finally hit theaters. And by Primus, civilization lost its collective minds in fanboy & fangirl Nirvana in ways we haven't seen since The Dark Knight. Scratch that, it SURPASSED IT! I am not kidding.

In less than 24 hours of it's release here in the United States, about 1:00pm on Friday afternoon, myself and CBC staff writer Jeremias de Leon noticed that the movie had already made 18.7 MILLION dollars on its opening night. That is just from possibly 2, maybe 3 screens in the movie in the states cause most theaters had a midnight showing.

Over the course of the weekend, it had topped Dark Knight's opening weekend with a solid $226.4 million in North America over the weekend. Just this past Monday, the movie made another $18.9 million. THIS IS ON A MONDAY!!! When most people are still in school or work. Internationally, the movie had made 475.8 million during the weekend and overall since the movie opened internationally till now has made over $702.2 million dollars in less than 13 days. It has been confirmed that Avengers now holds the record of the biggest opening weekend of ALL TIME; surpassing Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 to become the third highest grossing move of all time. What I would love to see is the movie become the highest grossing movie of all time, beating out James Cameron's Avatar by making more than 2.7 billion dollars. Will this happen ... time will tell but it is pretty adamant that people LOVE this movie. We'll be keeping a closer eye on this as time moves on.

More on this and more Avengers related stuff all this month here on CBC. It's Avengers Month so remember: AVENGERS, ASSEMBLE!!!!

LEMIRE NO LONGER CRAVES SWEET TOOTH

by Frankie Rodriguez

After the last few years of readers being on the edge of their seats with the cult hit Sweet Tooth, writer Jeff Lemire has decided that it's time for the book to come to a conclusion. Jeff explains on the Vertigo Blog the whys to the ending of the series and why not to blame DC:

"The decision to end it at #40 is entirely my choice," Lemire said via the Vertigo blog. "Truth is, I always knew what the ending of 'Sweet Tooth' would be.  It was one of the first ideas I came up with when writing the pitch for the book. The beginning and the end of this story were always pretty much written in stone, it was the middle bit that was fluid, and grew and changed as I went along. So, for me it’s incredibly gratifying to finally get to the end of the journey with Gus and Jepperd. Everything I’ve done with the series so far, everything I’ve built month after month, has all been about this, the final story."

The final arc in Sweet Tooth, "Wild Kingdom" begins with issue #36 and the double-sized final issue, #40 will be released by Lemire and longtime artist Jose Villarrubia this December.

SISTERS BOUND IN BLOOD IN CARBON GREY SEQUEL

from Image Comics Website
"Daughters of Stone" hits stores in June

The dieselpunk world of Hoang Nguyen's CARBON GREY first dazzled comic book readers with its beautiful painted art, intrigue-fueled action, and compelling heroines in August 2011 with the "Sisters at War" story arc. Now, Nguyen has assembled his creative team once more to continue the story of the Sisters Grey with the publication of CARBON GREY VOLUME TWO: DAUGHTERS OF STONE #1 in June.

At the close of volume one, the sisters' relationship was torn apart by the murder of the Kaiser of Mitteleuropa, the man whom they were sworn to protect. Now, with Eva and Giselle in exile and the vicious Anna on the hunt for conspirators, the fourth Grey, Mathilde, is on a quest to discover the truth about the source of her family's power.

A Kickstarter campaign to fund the production of the new volume of CARBON GREY reached its funding goal on April 14. Nguyen explained that both the intensity of the artistic process, with each page meticulously hand-painted, and the depth of research behind the creation of CARBON GREY necessitated the campaign.

"A lot of research goes into every page, whether it's a costume designs or different settings," said Nguyen. "I want to make sure that it's believable. My inspirations comes from looking at fashion, photography, architecture, industrial and set design. I like to go beyond the norm and bring something new and different to my drawings."

CARBON GREY VOLUME TWO: DAUGHTERS OF STONE is a three-issue monthly mini series, co-written by Nguyen, Paul Gardner, and Khari Evans, with art by Nguyen, Evans, and Kinsun Loh. The first issue (APR120424) is available for pre-order in the April issue of Previews and will be in stores on June 6.

The three issues of CARBON GREY VOLUME ONE have sold out, but a trade paperback (ISBN 978-1-60706-448-0) is available. A two-issue mini-series CARBON GREY: ORIGINS, about the childhoods of the Sisters Grey and their family history, wrapped up in March 2012. THE ART OF CARBON GREY (ISBN 978-1-60706-474-9), an oversized hardcover book featuring an array of artwork from the series and a look at the artists' process, was released in February 2012.

TOP 10 AFRICAN/AFRICAN AMERICAN CHARACTERS IN COMICS

Countdown:  Top 10 African/African American Comic Book Characters

According to Darryll “YTC” Carter

No. 10: Storm

Name: Ororo (Munroe) Iqadi T’Challa
First Appearance: Giant-Size X-Men #1
Storm is the one character that is on everyone’s top Black/African/African American list. If she isn’t something is wrong. She’s a mainstay X-man for so many of us who grew up in the 90’s watching the cartoon, most of us thought she was an original member until we educated ourselves or got educated. She can’t be dismissed and with a power like hers it’s no way she was missing my list. But because Storm is so rudimentary and expected that is why her place is number ten on the countdown.

No. 9: Vixen

Name: Mari Jiwe McCabe
First Appearance: Action Comics #521
Vixen’s origin is a tale wrapped in family betrayal, lineage and the real world horrors that occur in Africa every day. Short version, Mari takes a mystical relic, the Tantu Totem, from her malicious uncle, General Maksai and becomes Vixen. Vixen’s powers allow her to endow herself with the powers/abilities of any animal of the animal kingdom. If she evokes the spirit of the eagle, she can fly and has excellent vision. If she calls upon the form of the rhinoceros she can charge at a tremendous speed and rampage through her foes.
My first encounter with Vixen was on Justice League Unlimited where she played the love interest of Green Lantern John Stewart. She earned her keep with me by trying to manage a rag tag edition of the Justice League as its leader in the pages of JLA.

No. 8: Lucius Fox

Name: Lucius Fox
First Appearance: Batman #307
Lucius Fox is the right hand man of Bruce Wayne and depending on how you look at the picture, Batman as well. Depending on continuity he acts as the CEO or head of the Board for Wayne Enterprises supporting Bruce Wayne’s and Batman’s agendas on a need to know basis. He’s loyal, depending and brilliant as all hell, able to match Bruce in intellect and possibly exceeding it when it comes to engineering.
With Batman being my favorite hero, period, I have an insatiable respect for Lucius Fox. For without him there would arguably be no Batman, at least not a very good one.

No. 7: Fatality

Name: Yrra Cynril
First Appearance: Green Lantern #83
Fatality is on this list due to three things; she’s smoking hot, she’s basically a pink Green lantern and she has an unquenchable first for vengeance. I like women that don’t back down.
More officially, Fatality is a Star Sapphire that was more or less rocketed to her power by the destruction of her world at the hands of a novice John Stewart, inadvertently. Fatality went through a long journey, losing two arms along the way. But once becoming a Star Sapphire she was set on forgiving the so called destroyer of her world and told John Stewart to forgive himself. It takes a lot of strength to forgive someone who you feel has wronged you. That’s where Fatality earned my respect.

No. 6: Black Manta

First Appearance: Aquaman #35
While I’m not so sure how I feel about a Black guy being the arch nemesis of a superhero who conveniently falls into the prerequisites of the Aryan race, I am sure about one thing; Black Manta is one bada** dude. Call me whatever you want, but I didn’t even know Black Manta was Black until the DC Comics’ event, Brightest Day came out. Then I immediately felt silly for not really acknowledging the ‘Black’ in his name. Forgive me for thinking that maybe other characters created before 1970 with ‘black’ in their names didn’t have to be African American.
All that aside, Black Manta has taken Aquaman’s hand… twice and felt the need to remind him about it. Let’s not even mention his pure unadulterated hatred for the guy. I’ve never read hate so pure. He just tickles my fancy.

No. 5: War Machine

Name: James Rhodes
First Appearance: Iron Man #118
Do I really need to explain why War Machine is on this list? He’s like John Stewart with Stark Tech. After the performance Don Cheadle gave in Iron Man II, my already high respect for Rhodes went through the roof. Who doesn’t want to go into battle, with a bunch of guns, enough ammo to quell a small zombie apocalypse and an attitude that would make Gunnery Sergeant Hartman from Full Metal Jacket sit down and shut the hell up? Yeah, oh hell yeah I’m rolling with War Machine.

No. 4: Nick Fury (Ultimate Universe)

Name: General Nicholas Fury
First Appearance: Ultimate Marvel Team-Up #5
Ultimate Nick Fury is different from regular Col. Nick Fury. In fact, his race is only half of the difference. I mean, he is based off of Samuel L. Jackson. Who doesn’t like Samuel L. Jackson? If you don’t, well you should probably go die, but that’s beside the point.
The point is that Ultimate Nick is nearly a separate character, his closest connection to Col. Fury being a name and position. Bendis did a great job recreating the personality of a prominent Marvel Character and for whatever reason he felt the need to make him Black. If he did it because he thought Samuel L. Jackson was badass… well that’s fine by me. Cause he is.

No. 3: Firestorm (Jason Rusch)

Name: Jason Rusch
First appearance: Firestorm #1 (July ’04)
Firestorm can rearrange the atomic structure of matter to create ‘things’. He’s Dr. Faustus wet dream, essentially an alchemist, Firestorm can turn wood into gold. He’s fairly powerful.
I was ecstatic when I heard DC was bringing Firestorm back. I was even more ecstatic when I found out it wasn’t Ronnie Raymond, who I find to be somewhat of a tool. In the end I was disappointed because he and Ronnie were one for a spell and then eventually back together again after Blackest Night. Jason’s origin is colored in shades of single parenting, abuse and independence. Jason struggles to become his own man while wrestling with the depression his rage of his father and the adversity of his urban environment. He’s a relatable character, who through adversity becomes a mature person before he even starts college and in my opinion a better Firestorm than his predecessors because of it.

No. 2: Max

Name: Maxine Gibson
First Appearance: Batman Beyond TAS (“Unmasked” don’t quote me on that)
Max is probably the most unexpected character on this list. But she is definitely my number two. Possibly my favorite non combatant comic book character next to Alicia Masters, Max brings a lot to the table. She’s smart, hot and did I forget to mention smart? This girl may not have powers, but she’s got spunk and serious skill.
Max is a techno wizard. She makes her waves backing up, Terry McGinis, Gotham’s Dark Knight of the Future (presumably after Damien…?) with Intel, and tech support. Terry makes a joke calling Max his “Alfred” during the animated series. She’s Terry’s best friend and one of her duties as such is covering for him with the misses, Terry’s girlfriend Dana. Max comes off as a sort of Oracle like figure of the future and I had really high hopes for her character development in the pre ‘New 52’ Batman Beyond ongoing series. I hope they pick it up. I can’t wait to see her again.

No. 1: Green Lantern John Stewart

Name: John Stewart
First Appearance: Green Lantern vol. 2, #87
I’m going to start off by saying I love Green Lanterns. A super power that relies on will power and imagination is a writer’s dream. Having said that, I can’t stand Hal Jordan and John Stewart is anything, but Hal Jordan. Stalwart, disciplined, and stern, John Stewart is a model solider who uses his training as a marine and a gifted architect to create his ring’s light constructs. You never see John make anything trivial such as a pair of scissors or a fist to dispatch his foes. It’s always something fairly precise and tangible; usually a sniper rifle or some form of military tech. John Stewart’s willpower is astonishing. He nearly recreated an entire planet from scratch and reconstructed his entire Desert Storm battalion from his ring. John is everything a Lantern should be. That’s why he’s my number one.
