First Look: QUANTUM & WOODY # 9

First Look: QUANTUM AND WOODY #9 Begins "CROOKED LIVES, PRESENT TENSE"

Valiant is proud to present your first look inside Quantum and Woody #9, the FIRST ISSUE of"Crooked Lives, Present Tense" – an all-new story arc from award-winning writer James Asmus(Thief of Thieves) and superstar talent Kano (Swamp Thing)! There's a new scourge sweeping the streets of the nation's capitol – robots(!!!) – and Quantum and Woody are on the case! (Or at least they're supposed to be.)

Eric needs to know he can trust Woody – and that means Woody needs to get a job, open a bank account, sign up for a library card, and do all the things a responsible adult does. But when a new gang of rogue mad-scientist super-criminals launch a wave of robo-crime, will Woody stop them…or join them? Plus: EDISON’S RADICAL ACQUISITIONS are back…and they'd like a word or two about their goat, please.

If robo-criminals are the disease, Quantum and Woody are the cough drop! Bring a napkin because things are going get sticky when the world's worse superhero team deals with "Crooked Lives, Present Tense," beginning on April 2nd in Quantum and Woody #9!

Straight Forward Reviews : Quantum and Woody : Goat # 0

So Valiant has launched a spin off of Quantum and Woody that seems to be much more than it appears.  Much like it's protagonist.

Writer - James Asmus and Tom Fowler

Artist - Tom Fowler

Publisher - Valiant

Review by Jeremias de León

Story

So much of this story are spoilers! But without spoilers the synopsis is that this issue delves into the origin of the Goat that Quantum and Woody met and took back with them near the start of that series run.

These origins that revealed are perhaps some of the funniest I've ever read. There were definitely times where I laughed out loud and awkwardly disturbed the people around me. But, it isn't just laughs you actually come to feel for the goat. Those feelings grow to a high point at the end of the issue.

Art

Tom Fowler comes back and his work still looks great as he goes back to drawing the Goat and the boys. Especially noteworthy is the way he conveys effects like fire and explosions.

Verdict

Goat is a winner. With a story that is more well thought out than the cover would have you believe and lots of hilarious moments there is no way this can't be recommended. There's drama, there's action and there's tons of comedy I give Goat # 0 a 9.5 out of 10.

1st Impressions: QUANTUM & WOODY # 3

QUANTUM & WOODY # 3
Written by James Asmus
Art by Tom Fowler, & Jordie Bellaire
Valiant Comics

FLIPPING THROUGH:
If you thought the insanity of last issue was something, that was just the beginning. It seems that ERA agents Johnny 1 and Johnny 2 unleash the Nightmare Brigade; genetically engineered monsters that are supposed to bring out 3 of man’s more common fears into one gestalt of a monster: clowns, spiders & needles. And, by the Matrix, is it gruesome.  Quantum and Woody are able to escape them … and the police but then end up going their separate ways after another fight between each other. Unfortunately, this proves very smart for one and very stupid for the other as the ERA closes in.

ART:
Fowler’s style is rough but by issue three, readers should be used to it. The rougher pencils actually help with the more gruesome or uglier scenes and give much emotions to the characters. Fowler has great proportions and style with our heroes and our villains and it shows. ERA members look like a cross between James Bond villains and scary rejects from the COPS cartoon from the 80s. (Google it!)
Fowler gives great action alongside Bellaire, who does a great job giving this world shade and color. Things that seemed to be too muted before in previous issues definitely feel and look more vibrant here. And the two deliver solid art for the book that makes you want more; as well as being something a bit more old school comics with new school sensibilities.
WRITING:
This issue was an amazing rollercoaster ride. It definitely went faster than the 2 previous issues but in a good way. It did not feel forced. Asmus yet again brings us some of the best writing in comics with his particular dialogue and personalities of Quantum & Woody.  It is a different dynamic from Archer & Armstrong and it works solely for them. That is part of the books charm.
The dialogue was authentic. The pacing was great. The flashbacks do not interfere at all with the story but enhance it. And the reveal on what the ERA really is was well done. And that is not the only surprise this issue.  Asmus is putting in the work of his career right here and it shows with every page.

OVERALL IMPRESSION:
Are you kidding me? If you are not reading this book, then something is WRONG. BUY IT when it comes out on Wednesday (or Possibly Thursday cause of the Holiday). Spectacular writing. Great art. Awesome story.  Relatable leads. Geniunely funny lines.

RATING:
Wow. The industry is REALLY getting to me. This book was just amazing. I give Quantum and Woody # 3 a 10 … out of 10.

1st Impressions: QUANTUM & WOODY # 1

QUANTUM & WOODY # 1
Written by James Asmus
Art by Tom Fowler & Jordon Bellaire
Valiant Comics

FLIPPING THROUGH:
We start with our heroes falling out of a building … and work our way backwards.  We get a few flashbacks to the boys when they were younger.  We learn about the two brothers Henderson, Eric and Woody. Woody was adopted by the Hendersons and we get a clue as to why during the issue. Yet, we find out a lot about each bother individually … like how Woody is a dandy (yes, I am using the word dandy … look up the answer) who ran around and skips out on bills. Eric, on the other hand, is a bit more straight laced, good ole soldier that seems to be working hard on doing “something else.”

After the death of their father, the police are monitoring them as Eric and Woody have a very … unwelcomed reunion during their father’s funeral.  At the end of the book, we get some clear indications of their origin as well as finding that the mystery only deepens.

ART:

Fowler draws a very solid first issue. Clean inks with good levels of detail on all his people. Younger Eric was very skinny and his face and body reflect that. Older Eric has muscle on him which Fowler remembers and performs as such.  Fowler’s people were very well detailed … in such a classic way with some modern sensibilities that Fowler’s style stands out.

The action seemed to flow well. And expression really capture the feelings and emotion of the characters. The death of Derek Henderson visually held impact. Bellaire’s colors were good and I can see style choices made. My only real complaint was that some of the coloring seem muted when it shouldn’t be.  Part of me things it is a tone choice, like in the dinner but it just felt too bright for that scene.  Otherwise, we got some great colors and solid art from Fowler & Bellaire.

WRITING:

Asmus writes a very gripping, intriguing and funny first issue. There was a great level of humor with touches of heart and seriousness that blend together seamlessly. This book has been a hot topic amongst the comic book community since it’s relaunch announcement. Asmus more than assuages people’s fears with this issue alone.

The characters are varied and interesting. Our leads are so very different that their relationship works.  Woody is more carefree, womanizing while Eric is more straight laced with a very large sense of responsibility.  Their relationship as brothers seems to be as deep as it is varied. The Henderson brothers drive us along throughout the book with their personalities and their family.

With the death of their father being so visually realistic yet brutal, we got to see a little of what he meant to both boys. Woody’s adoption is now shrouded with a little mystery as it seems that Derek may not have wanted to adopt Woody but his wife did. Eric, for all his straight-laced, very honorable attitude, has some mystery himself as he was definitely training … to be a hero? Who knows? He’s military so that opens a lot of doors.  The origin of the two also was built up so very well.

The overall story was paced well.  The dialogue is smart and witty but does not insult readers intelligence. I get a very 90s movie feel to it … particularly making me recall Woody Harrison & Wesley Snipes in “Money Train.” Hmm … coincidence?  A truly wonderful, witty and engaging first issue.

OVERALL  IMPRESSION:
This was one of the best first issues of the year. The story was engaging. The art was great. Besides the slight issue with color, it really was a strong first issue. The characters are engaging, relatable and fun. The situations and stakes raise throughout the course of the first issue. The interpersonal relationships were very well thought out, fun and full of heart. Asmus, Fowler & Bellaire have something to be proud of.

RATING:

Besides the color for a few panels, it was exquisite. I give Quantum & Woody #1 an 8 … out of 10.

Comic News: Asmus & Fowler Bring On QUANTUM & WOODY # 1 This July!

JAMES ASMUS and TOM FOWLER Bring on QUANTUM AND WOODY #1 in July!

On July 10th, a new era begins for the world's worst superhero team in Quantum and Woody #1! Valiant is proud to announce that award-winning writer James Asmus (Gambit, Thief of Thieves, Captain America & Bucky) and acclaimed artist Tom Fowler (Venom, Hulk: Season One) are bringing Valiant's first full-on superhero team back to the Valiant Universe with an all-new ongoing series beginning on July 10th in Quantum and Woody #1!

Once upon a time, Eric and Woody Henderson were inseparable. Adopted brothers. Best friends. Brilliant minds. Years later, they are estranged siblings, petty rivals, and washed-up failures. But when their father’s murder leads them into the throes of a life-altering scientific accident, Eric and Woody will find themselves with a whole new purpose – and a perfectly legitimate reason to wear costumes and fight crime. Go big or go home, folks! Quantum and Woody are coming! And the action-packed, zeitgeist-shredding exploitation stunt comic you demanded is here at last.  (And, yes, there will be a goat too. Eventually.)

"Quantum and Woody are one of the most beloved superhero duos in comics. There's a rich history to draw on here and we have some very exciting things on deck for Quantum and Woody in 2013 and beyond," said Valiant Executive Editor Warren Simons.

"Since the day X-O Manowar #1 hit shelves, everywhere we've turned, fans have been demanding that Quantum and Woody step back into the spotlight," said Quantum and Woody Editor Jody LeHeup. "James, Tom and Jordie are delivering a smart, heart-filled take on the team that will be central to the new Valiant Universe, and one that honors the spirit and bravado of what came before."

Launched by Christopher Priest and M.D. Bright for Acclaim Entertainment's rebooted Valiant Universe in 1997, Quantum and Woody became one of the most beloved independent superhero titles of the decade, spawning a rabid and loyal following that endures to this day. Most recently, Valiant Entertainment re-issued the entirety of the original series for the first time digitally via comiXology.

"In all of comics, there's no other book that mixed style and substance quite like Quantum and Woody. I was willing to literally kill someone for the chance to write the relaunch for the new Valiant Universe. I might have. Those first days after I got the call are a blur. But Quantum and Woody isn't (just) a superhero book – it's action-comedy, it's family drama, it's a boys-meet-goat tale that tugs at the heartstrings," said writer James Asmus.

On July 10th, the Valiant Universe's most infamous duo enter the fray with writer James Asmus, artist Tom Fowler and colorist Jordie Bellaire in Quantum and Woody #1 – featuring a standard cover by Ryan Sook, a Pullbox Exclusive Variant by Marcos Martin or customers who pre-order with the their local retailer, an incentive variant by Andrew Robinson, and an interactive QR Voice Variant by Tom Fowler (with real talking goat action)!
