Straight Forward Reviews : X-O Manowar 18

The last X-O Manowar issue before Unity starts. This is a huge moment.

Writer - Robert Vendetti

Artist - Lee Garbett

Publisher - Valiant Entertainment

Review by Jeremias de Leon

Story

Things ramp up to, as the kids would say, "all the way to 11" in this issue. We've seen the plotting the entire world was starting to take against Aric and we know everybody was monitoring him like a hawk. But now, everyone is making their moves.

This arc had always had tension but this issue has tension that I wouldn't call thick, I'd call it combustible. So much so that you already see explosions occuring. All these moments however are only the signal of the start of the huge events going to happen in Unity next month.

Art

The artwork is something special, just calling it dark or gritty isn't enough because in the very same issue words like vibrant and colorful can be used to describe it.

The art is truly something to behold in this issue. Also of note is the line work of the characters it has this sketch like yet detailed quality to it. There isn't a ton of details on their faces or anything but you can immediately tell who they are and that they're totally unique characters.

Verdict

The writing in this issue is gripping, and that's a word I don't use very often unless I truly feel it is. As a matter of fact I think this is the only review I've said that. (Waits to see someone point out a previous review and prove me wrong.) The art is distinct and has a really style.

Also considering these are the events that lead directly to Unity you definitely want to pick this up. X-O Manowar 18 gets a 9.5 out of 10.

Straight Forward Reviews: Ghost Town # 2

Here's another edition of Straight Forward Reviews. This time I'm looking at the second issue of Action Lab Danger Zone's Ghost Town. Like with Jirni I had also read issue 1 and was ready to review it. Anyway I guess better late than never.

Review by Jeremias de Leon

Story

This issue goes into the lives of the people affected by the actions taken by the terrorists from the 1st issue. The writing is fantastic, especially the dialog. It goes into different characters lives and each of them act and speak like believable humans.

The messenger boy and the drug lord have different stories and are affected by the events that turned D.C into a ghost town differently. But both are totally engaging. Not only are they engaging but they're interesting since they're both very different kinds of people. One is someone who's trying to help people and of course the other being a criminal is robbing stores and the like. Seeing the two stories side by side really opens up the narrative and lets you see the world of Ghost Town for what it is, and not just as one person sees it.

Art

The art is well done.  It's a bit of a mix between cartoon like art and a more detailed painting. Considering the story where it's set in Washington D.C and everything is more or less realistic but with some science fiction elements like time travel the art style does a perfect job of reflecting the story.

Verdict

This is a great story about intriguing characters and a clever time traveling idea. No super heroes, no outlandish action sequences (there is good action still though) and no thin storytelling. It's well paced, and well written. You will get sucked into it I'm sure. This is a fine example of good storytelling. Pick this up and tell all your friends to do the same. Or rather pick the 1st issue and this up and tell your friends. You'll kick yourself for missing this story. I give Ghost Town issue 2 a 9 out of 10.

Perception #2

The story picks up sometime after Jarmo heads home from what happened in part 1. It is still the same day but in the evening.

In his darkened apartment Jarmo can't seem to stop replaying the noises in his head. The strange, unfamiliar noises. Just what was that? Jarmo recalls heading out of the hospital and hearing one-liners and something about twinkies. "Twinkies? What's special about them? Do they have chemicals in them that cause hallucinations? Are they laced with trinity?" Jarmo walks to his bathroom and sees if he can wash his face. He looks in the mirror and looks into his own eyes. He peers into his pupil and stares into the black pit and starts to wonder, "can I trust my eyes" as he starts to wash his face off and continue to try and piece together whatever facts he can about this case and why trinity is being distributed so much recently. After thinking some more Jarmo decides to call it a day and head to sleep.

Loud ringing can be heard hours later. It's Jarmo's cell phone. It's now morning. A groggy Jarmo reaches for it and looks at the caller ID. "Mr. Ramirez eh?" Jarmo answers, "it's Jarmo. So what do you have this time, Ramirez?"
"What I have is, what you need baby. Information."
"About?"
"There was an explosion!"
"What's with you telling me about explosions man?"
"There was one at the hospital that chick was at. Thought that might be of importance to your investigation"
"Looks like I have some snooping to do."

As Jarmo gets ready to go back to what remains of Kelsey Crusher hospital he gets another call. "Who is it this time?" Jarmo answers the phone "hello Jarmo is busy at the moment please call later."
"I know it's you Jarmo! Don't play around with me today, I want you in my office and I want you here 5 minutes ago!"
"Oh, crap, looks like I have to deal with ol' captain Mcclusky." He makes his way to the police station and as he enters he's greeted by a female police officer, with medium length brown hair and square frame glasses. "Hello, Frida you're looking cute as a button as always, is the captain still in his office?"
"Yes he is, I'd better hurry there if I were you." she replies, smiling warmly.
"You wouldn't want to be me kulta* you're great as you are." Jarmo says with a slight smile and even a bit of tenderness, which is rare for him. He then makes his way to Mcclusky's office and immediately spots something odd on that table.
"Is that... trinity?"
"It is. We got it from busting a lieutenant working for Mr. Frank." Mcclusky chuckles for a little bit and adds "you know you always did have good eyes, being able to spot this tiny bit of trinity on the table so quickly."
"Do I? ...Well, anyway what was it you wanted to speak to me about, sir?"
"Right, right. That explosion at the hospital. I heard you were there not long before it happened. I'm being pressed by the F.B.I now to give some information, basically I'm being forced to have you tell me something. An agent died sometime after that but before today apparently. His name was Peter or Parker or something."
"Why would they think I would be of help in that situation?"
"Like I said you were at the hospital, they figure you ought to know something about what happened there, and if whoever killed him came from there."
"All I can say was I was at the hospital, I heard things start to escalate and I high tailed it our of there."
"So you have no information about this agent's death"
No, I don't sir."
Mcclusky sighs "well, then that's all I'll have to say to them. You're free to go Jarmo."
"I have a question for you now though, sir?"
"What is it, Jarmo?"
"This Mr. Frank do we have any leads on him, are we working on busting him?"
"Right now, we have a few leads, we're not actively trying to bust him but he if say, he happens to be caught today, we won't be complaining."
"Thank you sir." Jarmo leaves his office and recalls his talk with the two thugs he fought yesterday.

As Jarmo walks away he thinks of where mr. Frankie may be. "A guy like him probably hides in plain sight. Must be in a business building downtown, just in an office neatly tucked away. That's how they like to roll."

While downtown Jarmo notices a person walking across the street. He had a bandanna and a cast and looked awfully familiar. After looking a bit harder for a few seconds Jarmo realized who it was, and crossed the street. "Hey, how's it going Bret? Remember me? I see you needed a cast after that throw I pulled off on you." Jarmo says in a very friendly voice.
"Ahh, I do remember you! I'm sorry about trying to beat you up the other day, after getting beat up like that it made me rethink my course in life. I'm on my way to Mr. Frank now to tell him I'm done selling drugs... and to run for my life afterward."
"You're going to Mr. Frank eh? Well, then you lead me to him without him being wise that I'm nearby, I'll handle that part by the way, and you won't have to worry about running for your life. How's that sound?"
"Doesn't sound too good with just you trying to get to him, but it sounds a lot better than doing what I was going to do with my busted arm, by myself."
As Bret makes his way to Mr. Frank's building, Jarmo shadows him. Finally as Bret reaches Mr. Frank's office Jarmo makes himself known to Bret and tells him to just do what he originally planned to do, and at the right time he'll burst in.

"Alright, Bret are you ready?"
"Ready as I'll ever be cop." Bret says with a tinge of fear in his voice.
Bret opens the door to Mr. Frank's office and approaches him with an air of caution. Mr. Frank is an intimidating individual, he's not overly large but fairly tall, dark skinned, wears a business suit and a perpetual poker face.
"Why have you come here today, Bret? I have no use for you today"
"Right, well, about that, you see I uh... well, I..."
"Well?"
"I uh... I want to quit."
Mr. Frank snickers. "You want to quit huh? You handing in your two weeks notice? You expect some severance pay?" Mr. Frank starts to laugh harder "severance pay!" Mr. Frank starts to guffaw now. "That's hilarious!"
"Yeah, I want out!" Bret says loudly.
"What if I say no?"
"Then I'll just leave anyway."
"You ain't leaving nowhere, Biggs, plug him."
Upon hearing that Jarmo rushes into the office and as soon as he steps foot inside sees a fountain of blood come from the back of Bret's head.
"Darn it! He could've been a good source of info. Oh well, I guess I'll have to make sure the bigger fish gets fried tonight!"
"What? What kind of line was that? Biggs get rid of this random guy too."

"Hey, I thought that was good. Anyway..." Jarmo notices Mr. Frank's henchman Biggs is appropriately named being at least six foot nine or somewhere around there, he looked to be near seven feet. He also noticed Biggs slowly fix his aim on Jarmo. "That slowness will cost you." Jarmo notices a flipped over chair near him and ducks down to make himself a smaller target and immediately kicks the chair to Biggs as he does it. It barely hurts the big man but it does distract him enough to Jarmo make his next move which is draw his gun from the back of his pants and move closer to Biggs. Jarmo executes a leg scissors and takes Biggs off his feet. As soon as he's off his feet Jarmo kicks the gun away from Biggs and aims the gun in his hand to Mr. Frank. "You're under arrest Frank"
"That's Mr. Frank to you."
"Not to me now, and not to any of the fellas in prison, I'll tell you what they will call you though, it starts with a B and rhy-"
"I get it random guy who I just learned is a cop."
"Right well, stay where you are so I can take you downtown."
"We are downtown..."
"Shut up! As you know in your rights you have the right to remain silent anyway."

Mr. Frank smiles.
Jarmo asks "why are you smiling? That big guy is getting back up isn't he?"
"Yep."
"Dagnabit" Jarmo sighs and executes a reverse leg sweep and brings Biggs down again.
"Stay down will you?"
"Never! You can't keep me on the ground can you?"
"Can I?" Jarmo presses his gun on Biggs head.
"You don't have the guts to do it! I know you cops!" Biggs violently swings his left arm at Jarmo and as Jarmo tried to quickly react his finger squeezed the trigger involuntarily. Jarmo stands slowly. With a  quiet authority Jarmo tells Mr. Frank "put your hands on your head, get on your knees." Mr, Frank listens. As Jarmo attempts to arrest Mr. Frank, Mr Frank reveals a blade he had hidden on his person and attempts to slash Jarmo. Jarmo with a fierce, yet silent determination in his eyes sways to his right and delivers a jaw jacking uppercut as he did to Paul in the previously only this time the force seemed to be greater than before and Mr. Frank could swear he felt a wind push his body up, though it couldn't be proven. Mr. Frank lands on the ground with a heavy thud. Jarmo finally arrests Mr. Frank.

Sometime after, Jarmo gets a call from Mcclusky with new information and learns that Mr. Frank worked a deal with Cesar Monticello as a part of a way to spread his influence in Nevada without being too open and seeming like he is brute forcing his way in. He then gets informed of his new orders, investigate Cesar Monticello and help the F.B.I in finding out his contacts in Nevada. For this he'll get  a partner to back him up. "Who?" Jarmo asks.
"Officer Frida."
"Officer Frida!? But she's still a girl this would be too dangerous for her."
Frida makes reveals she's been there listening to Jarmo and says to him "No need to worry about me, I've got a lot of tricks that people won't even see coming, I can handle myself, you'll see."
"Well, then we've got a lot of snooping to do, I'll see ya tomorrow kulta bright and early."
"But what about now, where do you think you're going."
"I'm tired, I'm going home and sleeping."
"But...!"
"Let him go Frida he's excused for today, he's been through a lot."
"I suppose he has. I'll see you tomorrow Jarmo! I'll show I won't be easy to push over, you'll see!"

Well, that's it for Perception chapter 2! Hope you enjoyed it, I'll see you next month! *about kulta. Kulta is a Finnish word for gold, it can also mean "baby, honey, dear, or sweetheart" and the latter meanings was the context the word was being used by Jarmo toward Frida.

That picture used in the top can be viewed here on deviantart, just a sketch of how Jarmo looks http://fav.me/d5am0t4

Top 10 video games that need a comic book

Before I continue with this let me point you guys to my previous list the Top 10 Fighting games that need a comic book. http://thebrokeninfinite.blogspot.com/2012/08/top-10-fighting-games-that-need-comic.html So here are the rest of the games that need a comic book.

Here we go!

Number 10.

Darksiders

You'd buy this right? I mean look at this
With Darksiders you actually have a comic book creator that did the designs for the game, Joe Madureira. So how is it that this does not have a comic? People that are into comics like Spawn would love this take on apocalyptic events with a unique take on the four horsemen of the apocalypse.

Number 9.

Medievil

A quirky horror-ish comedy
This game with it's quirky storyline about a hero that was supposed to be great but ended up being the very first warrior to die and then resurrected as an undead hero with powers would be a great read. Matter of fact it's always been the writing in the game that's what drew to me to the game in the first place. So having it's writing shine in a comic would be fantastic.

Number 8.

Parappa The Rapper

Chop!
Not all comics need to be dark or for adults, last time I checked kids love comics too. Parappa The Rapper would be perfect for the younger crowd to read and for adults who are nostalgic. The story is lighthearted but also charming enough to be a series of comics.

Number 7.

Actraiser

All kinds of stories
So, it's all about Go-- I mean the "Master" fighting sat- I mean "Tanzra" and a comic based on this would be one heck of an epic story. Large battles and miracles being performed and the like, if done by a great artist would be an eye catching comic that would be hard to put down.

Number 6.

Twisted Metal

Sometimes just having something be crazy is good.
Twisted Metal's wackiness can work for fans of violence, destruction, and grindhouse movies. Get a great mechanical designer, especially one with a knack for drawing cars and this would not only be a fun read but an eye catching.

Number 5.

Syphon Filter

Tactical Espionage..., oh wait that's another game
People know Metal Gear Solid and they know Splinter Cell those games are still going on and Metal Gear is even getting a movie. But Syphon Filter is another good mercenary/military video game but with it hardly getting any new games and the best remembered games being on the first Playstation. But it would appeal to fans of military espionage and action.

Number 4.

Threads of Fate

People know Mana, Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest but what about this one?
Oddly enough there was a manga planned for this game. It was being done by none other than Ken Akamatsu of Love Hina and Negima fame. But it was scrapped. This was one of those games that had an interesting story but unlike the more famous games done by SquareEnix it didn't get any extra attention. I think this should get another shot at being adapted into printed form.

BONUS: check out the opening for the game here The game is also known as Dewprism in Japan.

Number 3.

Elder Scrolls series

Who doesn't want to read about how people fought tough mudcrabs? eh? eh?
The Elder Scrolls series does have novels but with it's lore it would also make great comic books. Being able to see the stories you read or hear about in the games on the printed page would be cool. If I had to choose a storyline to be adapted I'd like to see the rise of Tiber Septim as a comic.

Number 2.

Legacy of Kain series

This just begs to be made into a comic
How does this not have a comic? Just, how... does... this... not have a comic!? The Legacy of Kain series has a lot of lore and each game, or at least most of the games had an interesting story. Like Darksiders it seems like this was made to be a comic in the first place yet somehow it isn't. Plus, not only is there a great story and great characters and character designs there's a very devoted fan base that would gobble these comics up.

Number 1.

Shenmue

For anybody that knows me know that this is no surprise at all
This is my favorite game of all time, so... yeah... But if you want a bit more of a reason the game's story is not done even after a decade and a lot of us Shenmue fans are so desperate for the game to continue it's story that we'll take a comic. At least I will anyway. The story of Shenmue is really captivating for a lot of people and if it has a great artist, especially one that can draw fight scenes well, I would not be able to put a Shenmue comic down.

So that's my top ten list of games that aren't fighting games that need a comic book. What are yours? Let me know.

Defenders Episode 1 Ch. 3

Sometime has passed since Brandon was struck twice by lightning and, amazingly, he is able to regain consciousness and slowly sit up. He rubs his head which is throbbing from pain. While he is sitting in the soggy grass trying to get himself together, questions began to race through his mind. ‘How could I’ve survived two lightning strikes in a row? Why wasn’t I killed? Why am I able to get up so easily?’

He looked at his clothes and hands while thinking, ‘Why aren’t my clothes singed or my hands burned?’
True, neither his hands nor his clothes were burned when he got struck. Brandon also checked his body and found that he is unscathed by the lightning strikes. The only evidence of Brandon ever being struck by lightning was the strong scent of static electricity in the air. With no recollection of how long it’s been since he was struck, Brandon got himself together and continued his way home. Unknown to Brandon, he was being watched the whole time from the first lightning strike to him getting up and leaving the field. The figure in the black cloak had been standing out of sight at the entrance keeping a close eye on Brandon from a distance. The cloaked person assumed that Brandon was killed by the lightning until they saw how easily he stood up. Once Brandon is out of sight, the cloaked person turns and leaves the area, fading into empty space after a few steps. Brandon finally arrived home some time later dripping wet from the storm that greeted him twice earlier, has now faded away. He takes out his keys and opens the door.

After taking off his boots he steps inside his house. “Brandon, is that you?!” his mother’s voice came from the kitchen. Brandon takes off his book bag slowly, still aching from his ordeal with Mother Nature. His mother comes out of the kitchen.

“Hey, what took you so long? You’re usually here before me,” she said as she walked towards him. “What happened? Did you get off early?”

Brandon asked as he took off his jacket and sat it on the floor. “No, I came home my usual time,” his mother answered as she picked up the mail and looked at it again. Realizing she had already checked her mail, she placed it back down on the coffee table and picked up her son’s water logged jacket.

“Why you don’t carry an umbrella I’ll never know,” She said as she carried his jacket out to the laundry room in the back and hung it up. “You said you came in your usual time? You don’t come home until about 7 o’clock,” Brandon said as his mother walked back into the living room.

“Brandon, it’s after 8:30. I’ve been home for more than an hour. I called Dan to see if you were with him once I noticed you weren’t home. He said you left right after school,” Brandon’s mother told him. Then she notices something odd about him. Her mother’s intuition kicks in and she asks, “Are you ok, honey? You seem a little…I don’t know…” “Yeah, I’m fine. I…I guess I got so caught up in the storm that I lost track of time,” Brandon said, covering up what really happened.

“Well ok, but I really don’t like it when you go out whenever there’s a thunderstorm. Then again I can’t really blame you for liking these storms. After all, your father used to chase tornadoes before we moved back here from Oklahoma, and it seems his interest in storms has rubbed off on you. I knew it would happen sooner or later considering he would sometimes take you along with him when you were younger,” Brandon’s mother said, “Just be careful ok. I don’t want you getting struck by lightning or something.”

Brandon flinches at the last statement his mother said. His mother notices the awkward look on his face and asks him once more if he was alright. “Yeah mom, I’m fine…really,” Brandon answered with a smile, hoping to defuse his mother’s curiosity.

“Well…alright. But you’ll let me know when something’s bothering you, right?” Brandon’s mother asked. “I will,” Brandon assured her. With that said she kisses him on the cheek and goes up stairs, telling him that dinner was on the table. He goes out to the kitchen and sees that his mom made fried fish and French fries. He continues out to the laundry room and puts on some dry clothes. He walks back into the kitchen and starts eating his dinner. As he is eating he takes out a picture of his father, who died 6 years ago, from his pocket. Brandon’s mind begins to fill with memories of his father, including a phrase his father always told him,

“One day you will achieve greatness.” Brandon’s father not only chased tornadoes but he also taught Tae-Kwan-Do and Judo on the side when he wasn’t chasing tornadoes and has trained Brandon in both martial arts styles. Brandon never forgot his father’s teachings and he thought about it more since his father’s death. He put the picture back in his pocket and finished his dinner. He washed his plate and went upstairs and watched TV. Ironically he turned to the Discovery Channel and watched a two hour program about thunderstorms and tornadoes. He fell asleep once the program was over.
