COVER OF THE WEEK (Week of February 22nd)
by Darryl Carter (aka Yusuke T. Centre)
Cover Artist: Ryan Stegman
It’s Spider-Man’s anniversary and so it was only a matter of time before something related to the webslinger captured a Golden Udder. This week’s Cover of the Week is Scarlett Spider #2.
First thing I noticed when I saw this was the costume. Ben changed his costume? Is this even still Ben? For CoW purposes it doesn’t really matter, the costume is awesome. The Scarlet Spider is rocketing out of what appears to be a shattering brick wall. Narrowly escaping an explosion? Very nice. The web work is fairly detailed, I noticed it on issue #1 as well (also an awesome cover). But I’d have to say the bricks are my favorite part in the image. It’s the way they’re caught in shadow and no brick is perfect. They are all unevenly broken. Must’ve been a strong wall.
What really made this cover for me was the force it displays. I can almost feel him swinging toward me. The combination of the bricks, the subtle debris in the foreground and the general angle of the image puts that feeling right in my mind. Not to mention the intensity shown in the hand holding the web, his life line. Scarlet Spider is holding on for dear life and in style.
