QUANTUM AND WOODY # 11 REVIEW

QUANTUM & WOODY #11
Written by James Asmus
Art by Wilfredo Torres, Erica Henderson, Jordie Bellaire and David Baron
Lettering by Dave Lanphear
Valiant Comics

This will be a spoiler free review.

While Woody and Eric are in jail, Detective Cejudo talks to her “sister”  Sixty-nine in order to stop her from dating Woody.  Yet, as Eric leaves jail, the E.R.A. return, making some serious moves as they work on capturing Eric, Woody, Detective Cejudo, Sixty-nine and Goat.

THE GOOD:
This book delivers as always as Torres and Henderson do a great job giving us good art that goes along with the style of Quantum & Woody since it began. The style is simple, yet with enough detail that you get a god amount of expression from it. Torres and Henderson give a good panel composition as well as some near perspectives. Bellaire and Baron continue to make the comic colorful enough to bring it tonight but have a texture that this is something a little older. The art does have a old school comic strip feel to it but Torres and Henderson really make it work here.
Asmus continues to write the work of his life. This issue had a great sense of narration, dialogue and character development while still being witty. Asmus gives some major development to Sixty-Nine this issue while we get to look more into the brother’s relationship and see that Eric really wants little to do with Woody. Woody makes a shocking confession that pulls at your heart strings in time for insanity to occur and Asmus blends it all seamlessly.  The pacing was excellent and the story is building to a great finale as Asmus leaves the boys with a great revelation at the end of the issue.

THE BAD:

Nada. The art was above average but not enough to go nuts over. Still, a great issue.

THE VERDICT:
We got fantastic character development and plot advancement with some good art. The end is and we got a strong issue before that end. I give Quantum and Woody # 11 a 4 … out of 5.

Quantum & Woody # 10 Review

QUANTUM & WOODY # 10
Written by James Asmus
Art by Kano
Valiant Comics

This will be a Slight Spoiler review.

Eric took a job a security job in the Smithsonian. Woody, meeting up with an old flame, took a job as a thief. What are they looking to steal? A skull? Why? Cause Woody and his ex were hired by an Abettor. Yep …. A connection to Shadowman. This doesn’t seem like it will end well.

THE GOOD:
Asmus continues to write the work of his career here. A great balance between comedy, action and drama, we get more development for our main characters, Woody and Eric. While Eric did not once done his suit as Quantum, Eric continued to prove both his valor and how closed minded he is when it comes to Woody. And Woody … continues to push more and more boundaries as he walks that fine line between jerk, hero and possible bad guy. “Sixty-nine” also gets some really good development here, both as Woody’s only real advocate and … well, the end kind of tips off something else. The issue was paced perfectly.
Artistically, Kano’s style has evolved over the years and he does an excellent job this issue … going between detail and simple, classic comic art. Kano’s style this issue definitely works with the art that has been displayed in the series as a whole … kind of going with a classic comic with some modern touches. We got some great, expressive panels. The color work was good, keeping in the coloring mood of the previous issues of the series while enhancing his own (Kano’s) work.
                A solid, good issue overall.

THE BAD:
The flashbacks were entertaining and cemented something … but felt … like it didn’t need there. Otherwise, nothing else.

FINAL VERDICT:

We got an issue with good art, good start and good set up for what’s to come. Plus, this issue connected with Shadowman, helping to integrate the book more into the Valiant Universe.  I give Quantum & Woody # 10 a solid 8 … out of 10.

Straight Forward Reviews : Quantum and Woody # 9

Quantum and Woody are back for more antics in issue 9. Just what kind of trouble are they in this time?

Story - James Asmus

Art - Kano

Publisher - Valiant

Review by Jeremias de León

Story

The story in this issue focuses on Woody's attempt to be a stand up citizen. A simple premise, but this issue gives you so much with just that, that is all it needs for the story. Through this premise we get character development, character backstory and a build up for the next issue. It was quite a clever issue actually. Sometimes having a laser focus like this for a comic issue or for a television episode is needed. This felt quite satisfying to read through.

There's still the wacky humor that's been present in every issue before this. It not only does not take a back seat but it's actually used to propel the story further. Besides taking some lighthearted pokes at comic books in general there's some jokes about other things that aren't comic book related that are franchises in the real world. One such franchise that was mentioned on page two I never thought would be mentioned in any Valiant comic, or Marvel or D.C for that matter. That franchise just happens to be near and dear to my heart as well so seeing it mentioned was quite a pleasant surprise.

Art

Kano is handling the pencils now, taking over for Ming Doyle from the last issue. He happens to do great work with really big moments like explosions and that was used to great effect in this issue. Especially with Woody's powers.

Verdict

James Asmus is a really clever writer who knows how to grow and flesh out characters and use comedy to great effect to comment on something. This issue is not only funny but well thought out, and has great action. Add references to things geeks like me love and wouldn't expect to see referenced and you have a winner here. I give Quantum and Woody # 9 a 10 out of 10.

First Look: QUANTUM & WOODY # 9

First Look: QUANTUM AND WOODY #9 Begins "CROOKED LIVES, PRESENT TENSE"

Valiant is proud to present your first look inside Quantum and Woody #9, the FIRST ISSUE of"Crooked Lives, Present Tense" – an all-new story arc from award-winning writer James Asmus(Thief of Thieves) and superstar talent Kano (Swamp Thing)! There's a new scourge sweeping the streets of the nation's capitol – robots(!!!) – and Quantum and Woody are on the case! (Or at least they're supposed to be.)

Eric needs to know he can trust Woody – and that means Woody needs to get a job, open a bank account, sign up for a library card, and do all the things a responsible adult does. But when a new gang of rogue mad-scientist super-criminals launch a wave of robo-crime, will Woody stop them…or join them? Plus: EDISON’S RADICAL ACQUISITIONS are back…and they'd like a word or two about their goat, please.

If robo-criminals are the disease, Quantum and Woody are the cough drop! Bring a napkin because things are going get sticky when the world's worse superhero team deals with "Crooked Lives, Present Tense," beginning on April 2nd in Quantum and Woody #9!

Straight Forward Reviews : Quantum and Woody : Goat # 0

So Valiant has launched a spin off of Quantum and Woody that seems to be much more than it appears.  Much like it's protagonist.

Writer - James Asmus and Tom Fowler

Artist - Tom Fowler

Publisher - Valiant

Review by Jeremias de León

Story

So much of this story are spoilers! But without spoilers the synopsis is that this issue delves into the origin of the Goat that Quantum and Woody met and took back with them near the start of that series run.

These origins that revealed are perhaps some of the funniest I've ever read. There were definitely times where I laughed out loud and awkwardly disturbed the people around me. But, it isn't just laughs you actually come to feel for the goat. Those feelings grow to a high point at the end of the issue.

Art

Tom Fowler comes back and his work still looks great as he goes back to drawing the Goat and the boys. Especially noteworthy is the way he conveys effects like fire and explosions.

Verdict

Goat is a winner. With a story that is more well thought out than the cover would have you believe and lots of hilarious moments there is no way this can't be recommended. There's drama, there's action and there's tons of comedy I give Goat # 0 a 9.5 out of 10.

Straight Forward Reviews : Quantum and Woody # 8

Quantum and Woody are back with more wacky antics in issue 8!

Writer - James Asmus

Artist - Ming Doyle

Publisher - Valiant

Review by Jeremias de Leon

Story

The story has Quantum and Woody acting like real superheroes and selflessly try to save people even though they have such opposite views from them. Yes, you read that right even Woody was acting like a real hero. The jump from guys to having superpowers to guys who actually care about defending others feels believable too.

Also I have to mention that the writing is brilliant and funny overall. It won't just make you bust a gut but it also fairly looks at people's different ideologies and beliefs.

Art

Ming Doyle's art still has this nice retro look to it. Along with Jordie Bellaire's colors adding to that. The colors almost look like old prints except of course without seeing the obvious CMYK dots like old comics had. It's a nice change up from other art styles you see in comics nowadays.

Verdict

Even if the art isn't your cup of tea I still have to give my highest recommendation for this book. The writing is hilarious and on point and it's such a joy to read that I give Quantum and Woody # 8 a 10 out of 10.
