NEWS EDITION # 23 - A PULP HERO RETURNS, DC DROPS 6 THEN GETS 6, THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO COMIC & THE VIEW OF AN AVENGER

Here are your news stories for this week. And oddly enough, not a single story from EIC Frankie Rodriguez.

Return of The Shadow

By Hector Ramirez

Dynamite Entertainment, like IDW, is known for bringing back old comic titles and revamping them has done it again with one of my favorite older titles. And so far, there have had ample success with such titles as Red Sonja, Vampirella, the Green Hornet and Zorro. Yet, this time, Dynamite is taking another classic hero from the early 1930s and bringing him into the 21st Century.
The Shadow will be returning to comics this April and Dynamite Entertainment is pulling out the red carpet. The legendary pulp hero will grace pages in a new ongoing series thanks to the team of Garth Ennis and artist Aaron Campbell. Dynamite believes Ennis was born to write for The Shadow where as Ennis himself has admitted that he was on the list of  established characters that he’s wanted to write for.

Garth Ennis said, "The Shadow is probably the last established character I like that I haven't gotten around to writing yet, certainly on this side of the Atlantic. It makes a kind of bloody, bullet-riddled sense: I always had a feeling our paths would cross sooner or later."

From radio hero to comic book hero, Ennis promises to leave his stamp on The Shadow. With Shadow having farther reach, now dealing with events that have worldwide consequences, this reboot has promise and I will definitely be following the series.  The Shadow #1 written by Garth Ennis with art by Aaron Campbell will hit shelves this April.

Through the Eyes of Cap

by Darryll “YTC” Carter

Taken from the pages of Entertainment Weekly, Joss Whedon speaks about his approach to the Avengers.

“So much of the movie takes place from Steve Rogers’ perspective, since he’s the guy who just woke up and sees this weird ass world. Everyone else has been living in it,” says Whedon.

I don’t know about you guys, but I didn’t get enough of Captain America from his solo film. With the Iron Man franchise working toward its third film, I’m surprised Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) isn’t the keystone character of the film. It is good to see that the audience will be following the team’s leader, Cap. We look forward to seeing what Whedon does with Captain America in the film. The Avengers hits theaters near you, May 4th and select theaters in 3D.

Out With the New, In With the Newer

by Hector Ramirez

Come May the “Second Wave”  of DC’s new 52 will start when 6 current titles are cancelled to make room for 6 new titles. The following titles will be cancelled, “Men of War” ,“O.M.A.C.”, “Hawk and Dove”, “Mr. Terrific”, “Black Hawks”, and “Static Shock”. Although these books are being cancelled, their characters will be seen in other titles.

The new titles include, “Dial H for Hero”, “Batman Incorporated” “Earth 2”, “Worlds Greatest” “GI Combat” and “Ravagers”.

“Dial H for Hero” is about a magic phone that grants its users super powers when they dial ”hero.” “Ravagers” is a spin off of  “Superboy”  and “Teen Titans” involving the rogue agents from N.O.W.H.E.R.E.  “Batman Incorporated” pits the Batmen from around the world against Talia al Ghul and her forces with Damian Wayne in the middle of it.
“Earth 2” is the new JSA title done by the prolific James Robinson and artist Nicola Scott.
“World’s Greatest” is the story of Earth 2’s Power Girl and Huntress stuck on our Earth. And finally “GI Combat” deals with the war time forgot.

Obviously there will be readers disappointed with some of these cancellations and I admit I’m not too thrilled about losing Static Shock. Another thing that catches my and possibly the attention of others is that they are introducing a revamped Earth 2 and a revamped JSA that should be interesting. Another interesting choice making Power Girl and Huntress Earth 2 characters I’d like to see how that plays out. DC has been doing great things(new logo excluded) and it seems it will continue with this new wave .

From Film to Panel: “Girl with the Dragon Tattoo”

by Darryll “YTC” Carter

Stieg Larsson fans rejoice. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is being redone again… But for a different medium; the graphic novel. The book is being published by DC Entertainment and has already been given a creative team.

Denise Mina will be scripting the book. Lee Bermejo is doing the cover, while Leonardo Manco and Andrea Mutti are on ink and pencils.  Each member of the creative team has worked on a Vertigo (DC’s grittier label) graphic novel . Mina, Manco and Bermejo all worked on Hellblazer.

Karen Berger, executive editor of Vertigo had this to say about the creative team; “We’re thrilled to be adapting this incredible story into a series of graphic novels. Denise, Lee, Leonardo and Andrea have such great passion for the material and stylistically they’re a perfect match to bring it to comics life. Their beautifully dark and visceral work will certainly blow us all away.”

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is a part of Larsson’s Millennium Trilogy. In the United Statesalone over 17 million copies have been sold. If the sales are any indication, we can be sure to expect DC to publish/produce the other two books as graphic novels in the future. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is marked for a November 2012 release.

New Logo for DC

By Hector Ramirez

As most fans know DC comics has changed their logo just a few years ago from the classic 4 stars in a circle around the DC to the current single star shooting around the DC. Well apparently DC has  decided that it’s time for another change and I for one couldn’t agree less. The  new logo will have a very plain D being peeled off of a very plain C. This is one of the  most foolish decisions in marketing history. What gave them the idea that this logo needed changing the current logo is iconic. The new one sucks .

NEWS EDITION #16 - MARVEL'S LATEST CASUALTIES, DC'S DOMINATION & AVATAR'S WORMWOOD STRIKES BACK!

This week's news.

MARVEL AXES VON DOOM MINI, ALPHA FLIGHT & MORE!

By Frankie Rodriguez

Marvel seems to be going through a lot of changes of lately. Whether it is because of Disney wanting to have a bigger hand in the company or their recent falling to become the #2 comic book company for 2 months in a row with the success of DC Comic's Relaunch (more on that later), Marvel is starting to look alike revolving door. One of the most significant cancellations is the axe being brought down on the 4 issue miniseries Victor Von Doom, which was supposed to be written by scribe Nick Spencer (of Morning Glories) and Demo artist Becky Cloonan. The 4 issue mini was to tell of a teenage doom and his trip to Hell to reclaim his mother's soul and was to be released in two weeks. Yet, Marvel had cancelled the project.

Nick Spencer's tweet on it Friday Morning:

Trust me, no one is more bummed about this than I am.

And Victor Von Doom are not the only casualties. All Winners Squad and Iron Man 2.0 (which is also written by Nick Spencer) are also getting cancelled. Yet, the other big surprise was our recent story on Alpha Flight's status. Originally, it had go from a miniseries into an ongoing series a few months ago. Yet, due to sales on the book dropping significantly, Alpha Flight is returning to its miniseries status, ending in issue #8 as it originally intended.

And just announced Monday morning by Alpha Flight co-writer Fred Van Lente on his Twitter, his upcoming 5 issue miniseries, Destroyers, has been cancelled by Marvel as well. Destroyers was to feature a story with She-Hulk, Beast, A-Bomb, Devil Dinosaur and more with art by Kyle Holtz.

Van Lente replied on his Twitter to one of his followers with this:

There was no announcement. The book hadn’t been solicited yet, and just wouldn’t have. … The biggest bummer about Destroyers was Kyle Hotz had #1-2 pencilled, and it looked grrrrreat. Ah, well. That’s showbiz for you.

All these in top of a recent lay off of 15 people being stated as a cost-cutting, not performance measure.

CBC will be keeping an eye on any other developments with the changes with Marvel.

DC TOPS SALES FOR 2ND MONTH IN A ROW

by Frankie Rodriguez

When DC first broke news of the relaunch, there were many fans who immediately jumped at the company. And creators from other company's were either curious or down right criticized  DC on the decision to relaunch the books. It is now November. According to Comichron, orders for October were up by 2.67% on DC books from September. Yes. You read that correctly. Orders went UP for books from September to October. And while early reports that sales have gone down for DC, overall comics unit sales were positive this year, unlike the last several years where decline was more than evident. In September, DC Comics had 19 out of the Top 25 Selling titles. DC once again continues that feat but it's a bit different.

In September, Batman #1 lead DC as the champion of Sales that month. Yet, last month, Justice League #2 had sales, according to Diamond Distribution.

September 2011 DC's 19 top books:
 1- Batman #1
2 - Action Comics #1
3- Green Lantern #1
4 - Flash # 1
5 - Superman #1
6- Detective Comics #1
7- Batman:The Dark Knight #1
10-Batman & Robin #1
11 - Green Lantern: New Guardian #1
12 -Batgirl # 1
13 - Wonder Woman #1
14- Green Lantern Corps # 1
15- Teen Titans # 1
16 - Aquaman # 1
17 - Batwoman # 1
19- Red Lanterns # 1
20 - Justice League Dark # 1
21 - Nightwing # 1
24 - Justice League International # 1

October 2011 DC's 19 Top Books:

1 - Justice League # 2
2 - Batman # 2
3 - Action Comics # 2
4 - Green Lantern # 2
5 - Flash # 2
6 - Detective Comics # 2
10- Superman # 2
11 - Batman The Dark Knight # 2
12 - Batman & Robin # 2
13 - Wonder Woman # 2
14 - Batgirl # 2
15 - Batwoman # 2
16 - Teen Titans # 2
17 - Green Lanterns: New Guardians # 2
18 - Aquaman # 2
19 - Green Lantern Corps # 2
20 - Red Lanterns # 2
21- Nightwing # 2
23 - Justice League International # 2

Notice that while there has been shuffling, Justice League Dark was the only book to drop down; only to be replaced by the flagship title Justice League with its second issue. And Don't worry too much about Justice League Dark as it dropped to 30. If you expanded  this to the Top 50 books of each month, DC still dominates with more titles in the Top 50 than Marvel.

With the increased visibility of comics, better access to them with digital same day capability, it seems that DC has succeed in their relaunch and working hard to keep their sales up. Let's see how Marvel, Image and other companies respond to this while DC continues their climb upward.

NEWS EDITION #3 - DCnU SUPERMAN IS DIFFERENT, TMNT & EASTMAN ARE BACK AND NEW ULTIMATE SPIDEY TO BE REVEALED

Welcome to the 3rd CBC News Edition. We got news from all over and things are really starting to shake up as San Diego Comic Con starts this Thursday, July 21st 2011. So let's get down to the news.

DCnU's SUPERMAN SINGLE, ALIEN & ACCESSIBLE?

The relaunch of the DC Universe line has been mired with many controversies and interesting announcements. Yet, while Batman and Green Lantern will be seemingly unchanged by the events of the relaunch . . . Superman will be going through some of the biggest changes. Chief among them is an overhaul of his powers and origin. It seems that when Action Comics by Grant Morrison and Rags Morales starts out . . . Superman will be starting out with a Superman shirt, jeans and a cape with the fact that he can't fly so much as leap over buildings. Didio stated that it will begin 5 years ago, at what they call the Dawn of Superheroes and that Clark will not be able to fly and not as strong as he is now.
Not only that, but that Ma and Pa Kent will be, at the beginning of Action Comics, deceased. This radical change was prompted by the creators in order to bring Clark down to Earth and feel more isolated, according to many in DC administration. So Action Comics is gonna give us how Clark got to be who he is in the present but will find himself still finding his way in the world.
Over in Superman, George Perez promises to examine many of the relationships that Superman has with people which leads to another big change for the Man of Steel: Lois Lane and he will no longer be married. In the DCnU, Lois Lane will be in a relationship with someone else.
Jim Lee commented on the reasoning behind that to NR:

Marriage brings about a certain degree of comfort and security in one's life. If you have a life partner, you always have someone to rely on. So from a story conflict point of view, it makes for a less dramatic story. I think a lot of writers can agree that one of the most dynamic periods of Superman's history was that period where there was a love triangle between Clark Kent, Superman and Lois Lane. There's a lot of tension and interest you create in the characters by having that kind of dynamic.

Didio added, from NR:

He's had so much learning and understanding from the days with his parents, but the rest of the discovery is on his own. If we had him married to Lois right now, he would always have a strong base to work from. We wanted to explore much bigger and wider stories with him. It's really the learning and growing of this character that is going to be the basis for so much of what Grant and George are going to be doing with their series and with Superman.

Grant Morrison writer of Action Comics said this about the DCnU Superman:

I was really looking at different techniques to find a way to do the series for a modern audience and also to take the core values of Superman and represent them in a way I hope we haven't seen before. And it's all there in that original story: what Superman is all about as a champion of the oppressed basically. I thought it'd be good to get back to that. It's a much more blue collar Superman, a Bruce Springsteen Superman. [Laughs] He's in a t-shirt and jeans, and he's fighting for poor people and people on the breadline who have been messed over by big businesses. It's back to that original Depression-era hero but updated to our current Depression era.

And thus, to give Superman a more sense of being alien while exploring the world and his own humanity, these are the reasons behind the changes; according to Didio and Lee. And Lee hinted that Morrison and Perez have plenty ideas to update the Superman mythos for both Superman and Clark Kent. How will these changes stand up? The two hope that it makes the character not only more accessible but actually add to the legend. Even the reasoning behind Clark taking up the new Superman uniform is to get in touch with his Kryptonian heritage.  We will see how these changes stand come September as Action Comics # 1 and Superman # 1 will make these debuts in stores.

THE BOYS' BUTCHER ON HIS OWN

Coming from Dynamite, the cult favorite The Boys has already had 2 spin offs from the series and The Boys inch themselves to its final issue, which will be issue #60 which will be released late this year or the beginning of 2012. Now, its been confirmed that the mysterious asshole that is the leader of the Boys, Billy Butcher will be recieving his own miniseries.

Butcher, Baker, Candlestick maker will feature the history of Billy Butcher as we see him grow up, travel the world and "kill interesting people." The Boys creators Garth Ennis & Darick Robertson are extremely excited about this new miniseries, as they will also be together to create the story.

Robertson commented on the miniseries to CBR:

This mini series is essential to the "Boys" legacy. The script is one of Garth Ennis' finest, (personally my favorite since our work together on Marvel's Punisher: Born). It answers a lot of questions about who Butcher is and why he is the way he is. It is heartbreaking, and yet has the kind of action and humor you'd expect from the two of us. If you're a fan of the series, this is the story you've been waiting for!

Ennis himself added:

This is the story I've been waiting to tell since the very beginning of The Boys.  A good, long, disturbing look into the dark.

Butcher, Baker, Candlestickmaker #1 by Garth Ennis & Darick Robertson will hit stores this week.

EASTMAN ON IDW'S NINJA TURTLES ONGOING

IDW seems to have all the licenses of the 80s, doesn' t it? Well, most of them. It has G.I. Joe, which all those sets of books, except for G.I.Joe: Real American Hero, all restarted this month with new # 1s and embroiled in the new Cobra Civil War storyline. They have True Blood, Doctor Who, Star Trek and even Transformers. And now . . . they can add another fan favorite property to their ranks as the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are coming with a new ongoing series.

In partnership with Nickelodeon, the new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series will pick up where the original comic book series left off. The turtles will be back with their cast of Spinter, April o' Neal and more as they face a brand new enemy, a mutant cat named Old Hob as well as retell the origin of the turtles, setting up things to come. And who is with us on this ride? Co-creator and writer Kevin Eastman! Yes, Eastman returns to pen the series he created nearly 3 decades ago with all new adventure with hot new artist, Dan Duncan with covers by legendary artists Walt Simonson and Sam Keith.

Get ready as the Heroes in the Half Shell are ready to bring the pain back to this game.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles # 1 written by Kevin Eastman with covers by Simonson and Keith with art by Dan Duncan will be for $3.99 and hit stores this August.

NEW SPIDER-MAN FALLS OUT IN ULTIMATE FALLOUT #4

Recently, Marvel did something in the Ultimate Universe they could never do in the regular Marvel Universe . . . kill Peter Parker. Yep. I am serious. Ultimate Peter Parker died saving Captain America doing the now landmark "Death of Spiderman" finale in Ultimate Spiderman #160 by Brian Michael Bendis and Mark Bagley.
Ultimate Fallout, the current miniseries that deals with the repercussions of the "Death of Spiderman" storyline is also being used as a launch pad for all 4 new Ultimate books that start in August and September. And while some buyer thought it does not matter, it has been confirmed that a new Ultimate Comics Spiderman will start as one of the 4 new Ultimates titles.
And while Brian Michael Bendis, the man who is behind Ultimate Spiderman since its inception is keeping the identity of Peter Parker's successor a big secret, fans won't have to wait long. Ultimate Fallout # 4 will feature a small part of it where Bendis and recent Ultimate Spiderman penciler Sara Pichelli will REVEAL to the world who the new Ultimate Spiderman will be.
After that, jump on the Ultimate Comics Spiderman # 1 for the beginning of the new Spidey's adventures, written by Bendis and penciled by Pichelli. And while there has been NO confirmations on who the new Spidey will be . . . it has been rumored it would be Ultimate Ben Reilly, who, is not a clone but a young African American teen who is friends with Peter and whose family has connections to Peter's parents. We will have to see if it is Ben Reilly.
Ultimate Fallout # 4 is due out this August written by Jonathan Hickman, Brian Michael Bendis & Nick Spencer with art by Pascul Ferry, Sara Pichelli and Dustin Nguyen.

And its a small news week, due to most of the surprise will be coming out of the Comic Con this weekend. So expect a LOT of news for next weeks blog. And if you are in Philly during the second Friday in August. . .

NEWS EDITION #2 - THE MIGHTY, UDON's MEGAMAN &STREET FIGHTER HARDCOVERS, NILES' 30 DAYS ONGOING And ENNIS' STITCHED

Welcome again to CBC's NEWS EDITION! Here, J1 gives you the news that you need for your comic book addiction.

FEAR ITSELF: THE WORTHY VS . . .THE MIGHTY!

As we all know, Marvel's current event, Fear Itself has already been gaining a lot of press with its globe shaking attacks and the death of Bucky Barnes, the current Captain America. The Worthy, composed of villains and Heroes of the Marvel Universe, are the lead Generals of the evil Asgardian God of Fear's army. Sin (aka the new Red Skull), Juggernaut, Absorbing Man, Titania, Attuma, Grey Gargoyle, the Hulk and the Thing. (Yes  . . . Bruce Banner and Ben Grimm fell under the sway of the power of the Serpent, the Asgardian God of  Fear).
And while Odin is making Asgard a war machine to purge the Earth, a new group is coming in to stop the Serpent and his Worthy. Look at the first teaser of  THE MIGHTY . . .

The Mighty are slated to make their debut in Fear Itself #6 . . .

Okay folks. Some of these are REALLY apparrent while others are not. So let's do with some interesting guesses shall we:

EDITORIAL GUESSES ON THE MIGHTY:

Let's go with the easy ones that are apparent: Ms. Marvel with that BIG AXE, Iron Fist, Hawkeye

Not so apparent: The one on the far right is probably Spiderman, the one with his legs out is probably Wolverine, the one coat and holding a staff is probably Stephen Strange, the one in the middle is either Iron Man, War Machine or Pepper Pots aka Rescue.

Leaving the last two, which seem to be females . . . that are NOT apparent either. The One with a large sword could possibly be a She- Hulk or a taller woman .. . but if its not a girl, which I am pretty sure it is, that opens the door to a LOT of possibilities.  Same with the woman between Wolverine (?) and Hawkeye. Spiderwoman? Mockingbird? Jessica Jones - Cage?  (which I am hoping for)

Either way we are looking at it, we will see what the Mighty can do against the Worthy coming Fear Itself #6 & #7.  Plus, just note that Brian Michael Bendis, who is writing both Avengers and New Avengers, has stated  that there would be some MAJOR roster shake ups for both groups and we may be looking at the beginning of it here. Find out this September.  Fear Itself is written by Matt Fraction with art by Stuart Immonen from Marvel Comics.

AVENGERS 1959 BY CLAYKIN COMING THIS OCTOBER

With the recent success of the storyline in New Avengers issues #9-13, iconic comic book creator Howard Claykin is gearing up to give us more of the Avengers Intitiative team he created alongside Brian Michael Bendis. The 5 issue mini series will be written and drawn by Claykin himself, featuring Nick Fury's Avengers team he formed during the aforementioned storyline which includes: Dum Dum Dugan, Kraven the Hunter, Namora, Silver Sable's father, Mr. Amos Forture, Bloodstone, Sabertooth and Fury himself.
For the new miniseries, Claykin stated that it will pick up where the New Avengers storyline left off and that there will be some changes in the line up.

CLAYKIN
Yes. I opted to lose Bloodstone and Silver Sable, because I felt that they were a bit redundant to what we were doing. We needed something a little more different. I added the Blonde Phantom, who I've always wanted to use. The rest remains the same.

The Blonde Phantom is a character from the 40's who is "a gun toting hot babe". As she rounds out the team, they will face an overt threat and a more hidden threat during the miniseries, says Claykin and promises to add on to the relationships and interactions first forged during the storyline.  Look for Avengers 1959 # 1 to hit stores this October.

DIDIO WANTS 80 TITLES, DC'S SECOND WAVE?

With  52 # 1s slated for September, there have been characters missing. And with the missing characters, there have also been missing creators. DC recently shed some light on that mystery, revealing that there will be more titles to come. Didio stated that he wanted to have up to 80 titles coming out monthly, that includes the titles from Vertigo and the kiddy books; which leaves some room for possibilities.

Yet there has been some confirmations. Batman Beyond will return with a new ongoing, written by Adam Beechem. Whether Ryan Benjamin will return to pencil is anyone's guess but Batman Beyond will be leading the pack alongside Superman Beyond & Justice League Beyond.

Also confirmed to come out in October:

Penguin: Pain and Prejudice #1 by Gregg Hurwitz and Simon Kudranski

The Huntress # 1 by Paul Levitz, Marcus To and John Dell.

A few other possibilities have not been fully hammered down but there was some confirmations on projects: James Robinson has already written several issues of a new series, which we believe to be the new Shade series; A new Batman Odesssey by Neal Adams, My Greatest Adventure from Kevin Maguire, T.H.U.N.D.E.R. Agents by Nick Spencer. Plus Nicola Scott, Amanda Conner, Scott Kollins and Phil Jimenez all have projects set to debut soon, but without release dates and confirmations of what they are . . . YET. With San Diego Comic Con around the corner, we will definitely see what the future holds. And promises of Batman Incorporated will hit in 2012.

Didio went on record during a tour stop a couple weeks ago in Dallas stating that he wants 80 titles and if a title is doing bad, they will NOT hesitate to cut it. This is all turning into one huge gamble. More on these upcoming titles in weeks to come.

NILES TO RETURN FOR IDW'S 30 DAYS OF NIGHT ONGOING

Co-creator and writer Steve Niles has recently stated that he is coming back to the 30 Days of Night franchise to pen the new ongoing from IDW. Niles admitted for wanting to come back to his old stomping grounds for a while and IDW has him for the launch of the new ongoing; which shifts from Barrow, Alaska to Los Angelus, the City of Angels himself. And the artist going for the ride is legendary artist Sam Kieth.

“I've been wanting to get back into the 30 Days of Night universe and shake things up for awhile now. I've just been waiting for the right moment, and the right artist. I have the right artist in Sam Kieth and the time is now.”

Sam Kieth has gotten his feet familiar with the 30 Days of Night universe with his recent miniseries with prolific horror legend Joe R. Lansdale, also published by IDW. The ongoing opens with a curious women getting cryptic warning that leads to desires . . . and possibly her demise in Barrow, Alaska. Meanwhile, in LA, the wheels of what could be the end of mankind start to turn with the resurrection of a vampire.

30 Days of Night #1 by Steve Niles and Sam Kieth will hit stores in October for $3.99.

ENNIS TO PREMIERE 'STITCHED' AT  COMIC CON

Garth Ennis is around a LOT these days. He's writing The Boys over in Dynamite. He's writing Crossed, the gory yet entertaining series over in Avatar Press. And now, he unleashes his film vision to the world at San Diego Comic Con. The World Premiere of Ennis's Stitched will be seen during the con, followed by a full panel with Ennis, the cast and producers of Stitched. It will feature a Q& A session as well as the first look at the Stitched ongoing, penned by Ennis.
The 15 minute film follows three American soldiers after a helicopter crash in Afganastan in which they trek through mountains in Taiban territory to find not terrorists . . . but ancient supernatural beings working for a present day evil.
Stitched  # 1 written by Ennis with art by Mike Wolfer will be released with Stitched DVD come this November nationwide.
