Ladies and Gentlemen Introducing Your New Justice League of America

Hey there gals and geeks, your friendly neighborhood InfiKnight here. Hope you guys have been keeping up with the amazing story lines from the good people over at DC Comics have been providing. us loyal followers because I continue to be wowed by their efforts.
The latest nugget of awesomeness I got my hands on was issue 1 of Justice League of America. While I don't get why they felt it was necessary to make the JLA, the JLI and the core Justice League 3 separate groups, it does make for an awesome bit of story.
ARGUS decides they need an insurance plan in case the league ever goes rogue but they didn't want to just have a team of supers come out of nowhere and take them down they wanted their new group to be a league to represent America and match each member of the Justice League. With that being said they recruited Hawkman to match Aquaman, Catwoman to match Batman, the new Green Lantern Simon Baz to take on Hal Jordan(not realizing its Hal Jordan's ring Baz possesses) , Katana to combat Wonder Woman, Star Girl as an answer to Cyborg, Vibe as their Flash, and Martian Manhunter in Superman's place. While all of this is happening a group of villains is coming together in a remote location and Oliver Queen aka the Green Arrow has been sent to gather information and is nearly killed in the process.
This new take on the JLA is interesting, its like they took the most vicious group of supers with a few rookies and are planning on giving them a PR makeover ala Dark Avengers. I don't like this new Amanda Waller they made her look more attractive then her pre-New 52 counterpart who was fat and ugly to match who she was on the inside. But being attractive hasn't made her any less of a bitch to get Steve Trevor to abandon his loyalty to the core League she threw it in his face that Diana has moved on and is now with Clark, harsh! the art was of good quality I have no real complaints and the story made for a good intro to the series. All in all I give this issue a Grayson Red Robin(3.5 out of 5).

Laid Back Comics: Green Arrow #17

Green Arrow’s recent title in the New 52 has been meeting with pretty much lack luster on almost all accounts. Things were not working be it in the story or the characters and things looked bleak for the Emerald Archer. This is ironic considering his first live action debut has been meeting with recent success. But, seems the fans weren't the only one to notice this as writer Jeff Lemire takes the task of trying to shoot new energy into the title at hand.

The question how he would go about this was one in the forethought on my mind. We have seen Green Arrow deal with some challenges but nothing that really stood out for the character. So instead of just continuing of the normal, we get the start of a complete stripping down of the character. Not only the stripping of Ollie’s money and company. Many items and characters first introduced when the book debuted have been removed, at times violently.

While Lemire was stripping down the character what is impressive is that he is also trying to build something more. Hidden forces conspire against Ollie, the force responsible for the actions leading up to this. That he may not have had the chance to reach his full potential on the island he was lost on. It is a fascinating look into the system where Lemire is using the books current continuity and giving a reason behind it, while with moving the story in a new direction and in the eyes of a lot of readers trying to correct it. The question of is it working or not still won’t be answered until much further down the line of the book. But, I can no longer call it a Batman with arrows as I once did. It is completely different.

Even the art work put together by Andrea Sorrentino is a reflection of the changes the books is going through and will be going through. Inside at certain moments colors were removed save for the color green for obvious reasons, or at times just black and white. These are things you often get drawn to it, something is happening right there that is important. Times it might be something small and other very big and crucial to the story.

The end of the issue might have removed nearly all of the items from the previous arcs, it still introduces some new characters a ‘dark archer’ and a man eyes were gone only to have ‘x’ where they were. And the reveal like mentioned that Ollie had left the island too soon. There does feel like there is more life in this book than before, a new beginning to a struggling title. We can very well see people coming back to this title more. This also well get those wondering, are there other titles that could benefit from such a drastic storytelling method. A complete overall from the ground up? If this new Green Arrow continues to do as well as this issue that could be our answer.

OVERALL 8.0/10

Comic News:More DC Creative Shuffle

Things seem to be a changing in DC Comics a lot these days. And now seems to be no different. Scott Synder is ending his run on Swamp Thing while Scott Lobdell is ending his time with Red Hood and the Outlaws. Fabian Nicieza recently became writer of Batwing after Judd Winick’s departure on the title. Ann Nocenti, the second writer on Green Arrow, is about to leave.

So many things are changing in terms of creative line ups within DC. Time to take a look at some of the latest:

Starting next week, Michael Alan Nelson will have his debut issue of The Ravagers as new writer, alongside artist Ig Guara in Ravagers # 8.

Ann Nocenti will be leaving Green Arrow. The book will be taken over by writer Jeff Lemire, as was reported in an earlier article. This change will happen come April.

Scott Lobdell and artist Timothy Green II, who recently replaced artist Kenneth Rocafort before he moved to the Superman title with Lobdell, with be replaced with writer James Tynion IV and artist Mico Suayan, who was the artist on Harbinger during Valiant’s relaunch last year. This change will take place in Red Hood & the Outlaws # 19.

Scott Synder will be leaving Swamp Thing to be replaced with writer Charles Soule and artist KANO on the book after the end of the Rotworld crossover with Lemire’s Animal Man. Soule & KANO take over in issue 19 coming out this April.

Gail Simone was hired back as Batgirl writer after fan outcry of her dismissal was made public mere days before.

There is an awful lot of shuffling. Are these books suffering? Are they looking for fresh ideas? Did the creators get tired?

The answer, it seems, to be a mix of all those. Synder commented that he always meant to end his time with Swamp Thing. Meanwhile, Green Arrow is getting his 3rd writer after  Dan Jurgens opened the series to pass it over to Ann Nocenti. Lobdell seems to be soaring high on Superman, so why not give Red Hood to Scott Synder’s protégé?

All these are interesting points. What will come of this creative shuffle? We’ll have to wait and see as we look towards the future of DC.

Comic News: Green Arrow Passed To Lemire

Green Arrow #17 Cover

It has been no secret that Green Arrow is one of the titles that DC wants to push and mke Oliver Queen a big hero. Problem is, since the relaunch back last year, the book has gone through several creative changes. Yet, fear not. Writer Jeff Lemire will be taking over the title as of Green Arrow #17 and plans a long run with the title and character. Along with him will be former I, Vampire artist Andrea Sorrento.

  Lemire commented to Newsrama:

The Green Arrow stuff that I've responded to from the past is the Mike Grell stuff. I've liked a lot of other stuff, but I think for me, the direction and the mood and the tone that I really want is something much darker and more aggressive and really fast-paced action.
So this is my chance to do something in the vein of all the best Punisher stories or Daredevil stories or Batman stories – a really good crime noir story. So yeah, that's kind of the direction we're taking.
And especially Andrea now on our team. He has such a bold style, and he uses black so much and shadow. He's got a dark look to his art, but it perfectly suits the emotional tone of the book.

Lemire stated that he is using the clean slate that the New 52 has given him to redefine the character and his mythology while staying true to the core. His rebuilding GA's mythos and his crime noir approach might be what the book needs to boost sales. And considering how Lemire has been writing Justice League Dark , Animal Man and more with big acclaim, this formula should work for Green Arrow. Green Arrow #17, written by Jeff Lemire with art by Andrea Sorrento, will hit stores this February.
