Laid Back Comics Watches Justice League: Flashpoint Paradox

It is hard to believe it has been almost three years since the New 52 has come into the DC World starting at the very end of Flashpoint mini-series. I can still remember hanging out at my comic shop ready to pick up the final issue.  And in that short time, the mini-series has not transformed into an animated feature. This is one of the quickest turn around for an animated project of DC, and one that even though mentions in the title of Justice League, this is a Flash mystery movie.

One of the biggest tricks of taking something like the Mini-series Flashpoint and turning it into a movie is trying to fit in all of the story threads. There were several mini-series and side stories that tried to fully explore the world that Flashpoint was. In movie form it could only handle small doses of it, it give a background to the changed events that are leading up to the war currently being fought and short side pieces, but that is far as it can go story wise before dragging on for too long. The main story is with Flash and this worlds Batman, Barry having to re-connect with the speed force and the hopes of going back and changing all that has happened to the world around him.

The world of Flashpoint is a brutal in animation as in comics, while the impending war that is waging between Amazons and Atlantans is shown to be ready to destroy it, there is a lack of urgency with the story and characters as it speeds closer to the conclusion. By no means is the movie slow in any fashion, which Flash being title character would be ironic, but because of the quickness for the 80 minutes we get, characters and stories are quickly introduced and not too much longer quickly ended.  That has always been a major downfall of the direct to DVD movies DC has made, more often the time is cut so the story suffers from it. Here that same can be said as we didn't know the world as we knew it. And the mystery of who changed time is well laid out so when the reveal hits you sit and nod your head with the movie and saying, “Yeah got it.”

This is also something of a comics fan movie, anyone who may pick this up out of curiously might, no wait change that will be confused by the sudden motivations and characterization changes between timelines. But, a nice touch that is they animators threw in some cameos from Young Justice Show that was a treat to see.

There is also a big change to the animation style with this movie, a much broader and exaggerated look to
many of the characters, massive muscles to the super strong. The look is not one that many would say is pleasing to the eye, it is a distraction at times. But, there may been a reason for some, as Superman first seen (As pictured to the right) is compete opposite from the Flashpoint version it is staggering and standing next to Cyborg and Batman he seems so frail. Showing the world is harsh to even the most super of heroes. One must also bring up the CGI Flash that shows up every so often making it very noticeable at times. But, the action, the chase of Flash and Professor Zoom go through in the final battle makes up for it. The sense of speed and the way they flow back and forth though the shots is amazing to watch.

And of course I must finish on the voice work, which always a stand out on these movies and here they work out wonderfully. And while it may be sad to know Kevin Conroy only has a few lines as Batman to be replaced by his father Kevin McKidd, who brought the weathered Thomas Wayne to the screen and stole a few scenes. For the Flash Justin Chambers did a good job, but in key scenes his voice sounded more forced than I am sure he would have liked. Though he is welcome to be The Flash again at any time. I also think it is fantastic the Daily family is now passing down voice work for Superman and Sam Daily is a excellent addition to the cast.

In the end, this was a solid movie put together with only a few bumps along the way in the story and animation. This of course is the first in a two part story as the end reveals that the second pass through time changed a few more things, much in the same way the first one did. As the next movie Justice League: War is a direct sequel to this movie in the same way when Flashpoint ended the New 52 began.

Comic News: Pandora Hits the stage From Fawkes & DC

During this year's Emerald City Comic Con, DC Comics announced another new title coming this June called Trinity of Sin: Pandora. Since first appearing in Flashpoint #5 back in 2011, Pandora has been staying in the shadows ... even though she was a key element that changed the DCU into the New 52. After she appeared in the New 52 # 1s and recently decided to visit Phantom Stranger, she is getting a new solo series. The new series will be written by Ray Fawkes with art by Daniel Sampere, who recently worked together in the 2 fill in issues for Batgirl.

Fawkes sat down with CBR saying this about Pandora as a character:

she's spent thousands of years crossing the globe, over and over again, hearing her name cursed for all the evils of the world. She carries this unfathomable guilt and this searing anger with her -- guilt because she may very well be responsible for all this suffering, and anger because she thinks she never had a chance to avoid unleashing it. She has reason to believe the game was fixed. So she's had all the time in the world to crawl through every kind of shame and pain and remorse you can imagine, and she's come out on the other side of it with a strong, pure sense of purpose. Is that going to lead to more trouble? Yeah, of course it is. But trouble for whom?

Trinity of Sin: Pandora promises to go through anyone and everyone in the DC Universe. The first issue by Ray Fawkes & Daniel Sampere will hit stands this June.

CoW: Cover of the Week 2/28/13

Batman Inc. #8

There isn't too much to say about this cover, outside of the obvious. But it's taking home a Golden Udder for what it represents, more than the artistic skill and sweat that created it. It's very Spectre-esque.  Damian, floating there like an angel and an open view into the darkness. It's poetic. As is the lettering on 'R.I.P.' If that doesn't get you to look into this issue. I don't know what will outside of a few spoilers.

Comic News: PAK & LEE Bring Back Batman/Superman

So, 8 titles in the DC New 52 will be done by the time May rolls around. We've already got replacements with the upcoming Green Team and Gail Simone & Freddie Williams II on the political themed book, The Movement. Come June, the big guns will be together again.

After a Long career as a writer for Marvel, Greg Pak comes to DC. And he jumps feet first into the New 52 with June's new ongoing, Batman/Superman. Yes. Pak's first DC work is gonna deal with 2 out of the Big Three. The opening arc for Batman/Superman will be focused on their actual first meeting, which takes place before Justice League # 1 and build upon the relationship that many fans of both Pre- New 52 & current New 52 will know and love.

The art is being handled by superstar artist, Jae Lee. The ongoing, set to debut in June, will feature Batman/Superman's first meeting.

   Greg Pak told Newsrama:
You may think you've seen it all, but this is their true first meeting, at a critical early stage in their lives and careers. . .  So this story begins around the time of Morrison's Action #1, when both of these men are young and wild and dangerous. Anything can happen. They've never even heard of each other before – never even heard the word "superhero."
So how will Clark react the first time he sees an insanely dangerous combatant dressed like a giant bat? And how will Bruce react at the sight of an alien with the power to bend steel in his bare hands? It's a hugely fun place to dive in with these characters.

Pak promises that the tales will eventually jump to present day while building on the friendship between the two heroes and why they trust each other more than anyone else. Batman/Superman # 1 written by Greg Pak & art by Jae Lee will hit stores in June.

Comic News: 6 More Titles To the DC Graveyard

Ladies & Gents, it is starting to become painful to see the "now" rotating door that has become DC Comics. Just recently, mere months ago, it was stated by DC hire ups that the New 52 would stay as it for some time to come. Well ... that was a lie. Six more titles are being cancelled from DC. And which 6 titles will die and join the New 52 Graveyard?

Fury of Firestorm, The Savage Hawkman, Deathstroke (which is hilarious when Rob Liefeld stated on Twitter that the book would end up cancelled after his "abrupt" departure from the company), The Ravagers, Team 7 and Sword of Sorcery. Add that to the end of I, Vampire and Legion Lost, which were already announced to get cancellations. There is something REALLY, REALLY wrong here.

The first 3 titles  have been part of the New 52 since launch. Ravagers was part of the "Second Wave" of titles which started around May of last year with the last 2 titles just starting this past September.

According to DC Comics EIC Bob Harris, that we will continue to see many of the characters from the cancelled titles in other places. Amethyst "might" return to Justice League Dark - which I honestly hope cause seriously ... damn. And the team needs some light in that group besides Deadman. Hawkman will be prominently featured in Justice League of America. Fairchild, Beast Boy & Terra were assured that we'd see them again somewhere else. Everyone else ...no word but hey, this just happened.

Laid Back Comics: Green Arrow #17

Green Arrow’s recent title in the New 52 has been meeting with pretty much lack luster on almost all accounts. Things were not working be it in the story or the characters and things looked bleak for the Emerald Archer. This is ironic considering his first live action debut has been meeting with recent success. But, seems the fans weren't the only one to notice this as writer Jeff Lemire takes the task of trying to shoot new energy into the title at hand.

The question how he would go about this was one in the forethought on my mind. We have seen Green Arrow deal with some challenges but nothing that really stood out for the character. So instead of just continuing of the normal, we get the start of a complete stripping down of the character. Not only the stripping of Ollie’s money and company. Many items and characters first introduced when the book debuted have been removed, at times violently.

While Lemire was stripping down the character what is impressive is that he is also trying to build something more. Hidden forces conspire against Ollie, the force responsible for the actions leading up to this. That he may not have had the chance to reach his full potential on the island he was lost on. It is a fascinating look into the system where Lemire is using the books current continuity and giving a reason behind it, while with moving the story in a new direction and in the eyes of a lot of readers trying to correct it. The question of is it working or not still won’t be answered until much further down the line of the book. But, I can no longer call it a Batman with arrows as I once did. It is completely different.

Even the art work put together by Andrea Sorrentino is a reflection of the changes the books is going through and will be going through. Inside at certain moments colors were removed save for the color green for obvious reasons, or at times just black and white. These are things you often get drawn to it, something is happening right there that is important. Times it might be something small and other very big and crucial to the story.

The end of the issue might have removed nearly all of the items from the previous arcs, it still introduces some new characters a ‘dark archer’ and a man eyes were gone only to have ‘x’ where they were. And the reveal like mentioned that Ollie had left the island too soon. There does feel like there is more life in this book than before, a new beginning to a struggling title. We can very well see people coming back to this title more. This also well get those wondering, are there other titles that could benefit from such a drastic storytelling method. A complete overall from the ground up? If this new Green Arrow continues to do as well as this issue that could be our answer.

OVERALL 8.0/10

Comic News: Old is New Again in Starlin's Stormwatch

Announced a few weeks ago, legendary comic creator Jim Starlin is going to take over both art and writing duties for DC's Stormwatch. While many fans speculated the direction the book will good, yesterday, Starlin posted some art on his Facebook page, giving a taste of the future.

So, in all likeliness, we are gonna get to see another incarnation of Stormwatch show up, possibly replacing the current New 52 version thanks to the current multi-dimensional storyline in the book. Starlin's old character the Weird makes his New 52 debut. Classic Authority style uniforms hit Apollo & Midnighter as they come to rescue their New 52 selves alongside another Stormwatch team which includes Starlin's The Weird, Hellstrike, The Forecaster, Storm Control, Jenny Storm & alternate dimension versions of Engineer (with Midnighter and Apollo of course).

Stalin also indicated on Facebook that he's staying on Stormwatch for A LONG Time.

"I just finished writing and penciling the cover for issue #23 and am having a great time working on the title. So budget accordingly. I'm not planning on going anywhere anytime soon."

Starlin's first issue of Stormwatch hits shelves this April.

First Impressions: The Phantom Stranger # 4

THE PHANTOM STRANGER # 4
Written by Dan Didio & J.M. DeMatteis
Art by Brent Anderson, Phillip Tan & Rob Hunter
DC  Comics

FLIPPING THROUGH:

The Phantom Stranger is one of the books from DC’s Third Wave of New 52 that replaced other books that were cancelled (like Voodoo –ggrrrr).  Now, why a book like this? Well, it seems the book is being used to set up the upcoming Trinity War, that is due to come later this year, while showing us the mystical side of the DCU in a brand new way.
The Spectre, Raven, Dr. 13 & more have all crossed paths with the Phantom Stranger. What makes The Phantom Stranger unique? After betraying his best friend, which seems to give all indications that he’s Judas from the Bible, he currently walks the world, performing disgusting actions under the guide of a “higher power” for the greater good.
Don’t believe me? Well, it seems that The Phantom Stranger is responsible for making Jim Corrigan into The Spectre and stopping Trigon the Terrible from invading Earth … by handing him over Raven against her will.  Add the fact that he has changed his prison enough in the present to have a family and you got an interesting premise for a book.
Which gets us to today’s little pearl of wisdom …

ART:

Artistically, issue 4 was a nice common group of both normal life and the mystical reality that The Phantom Stranger walks in. And there seems to be a nice mix of classic comic book art style with Brent Anderson … mixed with kinetic yet rich inks/finishes by both Philip Tan and Rob Hunter.

When you get to the mundane parts of  the Phantom Strangers life, you get nice, bright pencils with lighter inks to keep you focused on the real world. When you get to the more mystical stuff … this issue dealing with the Justice League Dark, the inks are darker. The colors and shading bring you are darker feel. It fits the atmosphere and characters with in the Justice League Dark.

The Phantom Stranger looks regal in this issue. Giving him an imposing presence next to the slimy, manipulative bastard that is John Constantine. Constantine decided that he wants Phantom Stranger on Justice League Dark and the exchanges between those characters and our lead are gloriously and darkly depicted. When it was the real world, it was more vibrant but the shading and color matched the scene/panel art. A great job by Anderson, Tan and Hunter on a strong issue of Phantom Stranger

WRITING:

Honestly, this book is a sleeper and I am wondering why more people are not reading it. Didio and DeMatteis script a wonderfully tormented yet human character in the inhuman Phantom Stranger. Phantom Stranger has sculpted his prison into something more of his liking with his family but we get shown how much of an Achellis heel they are this issue.

Phantom Stranger’s imposing presence and action both highlighted his heavenly calling while also displayed his humanity in his human form. Constantine feels very much like how he is written in Justice League Dark and it was great. His usual manipulative ways … making sure he had something over Phantom Stranger to ensure cooperation while Phantom Stranger still had his own ideas. And the cliffhanger at the end just screamed for more. Especially considering that Pandora made an appearance and something does happen with our main characters family.  Deadman also had an interesting key focus on this issue, giving us more on what the Phantom Stranger really is. The rest of Justice League Dark were utilized somewhat well for exception of Black Orchid but …that is a minor misstep in an otherwise entrancing, tension filled issue.

OVERALL IMPRESSION:

Constantine is a slimy bastard. The Phantom Stranger is definitely a very complex character. It is great to see a “good” that is just as complex as Constantine but in an entirely different way. This issue was a great showcase of the character and set up for more to come. The pacing was excellent. The art was good. The story was gripping. And the emotions felt authentic while the visuals were both fitting of tone and good to look at.

The Phantom Stranger is indeed the sleeper book of the DC Universe right now. More people should pick it up if they want to know more about the mystical side of the universe. And with such big characters like the Justice League Dark, Pandora and a certain character at the end of the book showing up … there is much that this book offers. A great examination of learning how to make a prison for you while sometimes it reminds you that it is still a prison.

            I give The Phantom Stranger # 4 a 8.5 … out of 10.

Comic News: Gail Simone is OFF Batgirl

Confirmation of this came from multiple sources, including Gail's own twitter & The Bleeding Cool. According to what was said, new Batgirl editor Brian Cunningham dismissed Gail Simone as writer for Batgirl. No reasons why considering the book did better than most fans anticipated. Many  have commented that that is squarely because of Gail being on the book.

Meanwhile, Gail said her goodbyes on twitter:

I want to give huge, huge thanks to the other creators in the
bat-offices, and editors Bobbie Chase and @yourpallsmitty, champions
all.

And the biggest thank you of all to you guys for supporting this book
so hugely and making it a commercial and critical success.
I honestly don’t have the words right now to thank you all. I’m pretty
choked up and it’s all gratitude, not bitterness.

With that being said,   people question the future of the title. Particular of Barbara Gordon as well. Could this signal her return to being Oracle. Could this also signal the end of Barbara Gordon? And what will happen to Gail, now that it seems that she is no longer writing for DC ... unless she is  writing something in secret? Time can only tell.

Comic News: Green Arrow Passed To Lemire

Green Arrow #17 Cover

It has been no secret that Green Arrow is one of the titles that DC wants to push and mke Oliver Queen a big hero. Problem is, since the relaunch back last year, the book has gone through several creative changes. Yet, fear not. Writer Jeff Lemire will be taking over the title as of Green Arrow #17 and plans a long run with the title and character. Along with him will be former I, Vampire artist Andrea Sorrento.

  Lemire commented to Newsrama:

The Green Arrow stuff that I've responded to from the past is the Mike Grell stuff. I've liked a lot of other stuff, but I think for me, the direction and the mood and the tone that I really want is something much darker and more aggressive and really fast-paced action.
So this is my chance to do something in the vein of all the best Punisher stories or Daredevil stories or Batman stories – a really good crime noir story. So yeah, that's kind of the direction we're taking.
And especially Andrea now on our team. He has such a bold style, and he uses black so much and shadow. He's got a dark look to his art, but it perfectly suits the emotional tone of the book.

Lemire stated that he is using the clean slate that the New 52 has given him to redefine the character and his mythology while staying true to the core. His rebuilding GA's mythos and his crime noir approach might be what the book needs to boost sales. And considering how Lemire has been writing Justice League Dark , Animal Man and more with big acclaim, this formula should work for Green Arrow. Green Arrow #17, written by Jeff Lemire with art by Andrea Sorrento, will hit stores this February.

NYCC Comic News: A New Kind of Justice League of America

There has been so many different things coming out of NYCC but this certainly makes one of the best announcements. As recently reported here on BI, Evan Van Schiver will be taking over as artist on Batman: The Dark Knight as of issue #16. Which left us a question of  ... where is artist David Finch going?

And we go our answer to that all right. Finch will join Geoff Johns for the launch of the brand new Justice League of America title. The new title will join Threshold and the upcoming Superman title by Scott Synder and Jim Lee come next year. This new JLA will be spinning off the events that have transpired during the first year of Justice League, also written by Johns.

The first inkling of this happened in this months Justice League #13 where we saw Steve Trevor meet up with Green Arrow again for a different kind of mission, as they will operate for Trevor and A. R.G.U.S. Johns quoted to Newsrama that the new JLA title:

"The book is going to have a tone that is JSA[and] the original Ostrander Suicide Squad, which was very character driven and...utilized characters we don’t necessarily see together a lot," Johns said of the new book. "Those are the two biggest influences on where the book is going."

The new Justice League of America will definitely utilize an interesting cast as it features: Green Arrow, Hawkman, Martian Manhunter, Green Lantern Baz, Stargirl, Kitana, Vibe and Catwoman. Johns also promised that this group will definitely feel very different from any other incarnation of the League. Stargirl, according to Johns, will be the heart of this team much like she was on his run on JSA. Meanwhile, Catwoman's reasons for joining are personal and deals directly with Steve Trevor and something she wants while Johns stated that this title will set up Martian Manhunter as the most dangerous man on the planet.

Look for the new Justice League of America #1 by Geoff Johns and artist David Finch to hit shelves early in 2013.

Blue Beetle, Grifter, Frankenstein and Legion Lost Join the Pit of Cancellations

Yep. DC does it again. With their low selling performances, Legion Lost, Frankenstein  Blue Beetle and Grifter will all be cancelled as of their #17th issues. This titles, added to the other previous cancelled books that include Voodoo, Static Shock, Mr Terrific, Blackhawks,OMAC, JLI, Men at War, Hawk & Dove, the recently started GI Combat, Resurrection Man and  Captain Atom. That makes 15 titles, over 1/4th of the new 52 has been cancelled.

While the announced new Superman title by Snyder & Lee plus Justice League of America do bring in some hope ..., that doesn't change the fact that DC is getting very used to chopping off titles.

According to CBR though, not all the cancellation were part of the 4 lowest selling books:

Fro example, two of the cancelled books – "Grifter" and "Blue Beetle" – are definitely the lowest-selling books in the New 52 line that haven't been announced for cancellation already, so their end comes as no surprise. However, "Firestorm: The Nuclear Men" is next in lowest sales before "Frankenstein," and a number of other titles like "Hawkman," "I, Vampire" and "DC Universe Presents" mix in before "Legion Lost." Meanwhile, the next lowest series up are "Deathstroke" and "Demon Knights."

The final issues of these books will hit stores this February. And maybe it is time to have Grifter & Voodoo on a new incarnation of WildCATS .... I'm just saying.

NYCC: Scott Snyder and Jim Lee headlining new Superman title

If there was one BIG announcement that came out of yesterday's DC Comics panel, it was this one. In celebrating the boy scout's 70th anniversary (along with the upcoming 2013 reboot "The Man of Steel"), it was confirmed that a brand new ongoing series titled "Man of Steel" will debut next year and that the creative team for this comic, will be writer Scott Snyder and artist Jim Lee.

On the title fitting with the continuity & what should be expected with the debut
:

"This will play along with the other Superman books in the sense that it's in continuity, but we really wanted to carve out our own territory. This really is sort of the biggest, most epic Superman story we could do together while having our feet planted firmly in continuity and making sure that everyone had enough room. For us, this is an independent book and something that will challenge Superman in a big way that's unique to our book. At the same time, I'm friends with Scott and with Andy too, so we're really excited to play alongside each other and share ideas. I think one of the interesting things about him is that Clark is always Clark. But for Superman, the thing that makes him such a strong character is that the values he grew up with and the person he was raised to be are still at the core of what makes him the most powerful superhero on earth. This isn't going to be a story where it's Clark versus Superman or seeing the two of them split. It's more about challenges for Superman that rock him to the core emotionally, psychologically, and also physically. It really is going to wind up putting him up against someone who can go blow-to-blow with him and really take him down."

Artist, Jim Lee on why he decided to team up with Snyder on 'Man of Steel'
:

"I would say with my Co-Publisher hat on looking into 2013, it's Superman 75th anniversary. So we wanted to do a lot of great things with Superman in the coming year and expand the number of books we put out under his name. From an artist's point of view, I always want to work with the writers I admire. I've following Scott's work on "American Vampire" where I actually did a variant for the first issue, and I followed him straight through to "Batman" where I loved the way he introduced new mythology and made it seem so seamless and like it'd been there forever. I wanted a chance to work with Scott and do it on a character like Superman where we could see what he could come up with to show us what this character is about even as we've known him for 75 years. Scott and I had a breakfast at San Diego Comic-Con, and he walked me through this story, and I was sold from that moment on."

Along with this announcement, there was also shown new artwork at the panel, for the 2013 book by Mr. [Jim] Lee.

Stay tuned later tonight for another big Superman announcement in regards to the post-Grant Morrison era of "Action Comics", from yesterday's panel.

COVER OF THE WEEK #12

Wonder Woman #8

Cover Art by CLIFF CHIANG

By Darryll YTC Carter

I have been waiting to hand out this Golden Udder for about two or three weeks now. Wonder Woman #8 is here and in the words of my editor, “it is glorious!” What we have here is a rare sight. Wonder Woman using guns. They even have her doing an epic gunslinger dive. That is just awesome.  Kudos to the creative team for replacing the mythical bow and arrows of Eros (Cupid) with a modern look. I particularly like the heart shaped bullet flashes.
