Zombie Tramp #1 Boasting big numbers!

ZOMBIE TRAMP #1 BOASTING BIG NUMBERS!
Action Lab Entertainment’ first company produced title a massive success.

PITTSBURGH, PA- Dan Mendoza’s critically acclaimed, genre bending series Zombie Tramp is relaunching with a new #1. The Action Lab: Danger Zone title is a hit, as preorders top 16,000 copies. The new Zombie Trap, co-written by Mendoza, Jason Martin (Night of the 80’s Undead) and artist TM Chu, will launch on July 23, with 12 alternate covers drawn by industry talents Jerry Gaylord (Fanboys vs. Zombies), Josh Howard ( Dead @17) and Jamal Igle (The Terminator: Enemy of my enemy).

Zombie Tramp is the story of Janey Bell, once Hollywood’s most popular high-priced call girl until she was bitten by a zombie and imbued with strange new powers. The new series picks up from where the Free Comic Book Day preview ends as Janey arrives in Las Vegas to start her undead life over again.

While a relatively new company about to celebrate it’s fifth anniversary in 2015, Action Lab Entertainment is growing quickly as a marquee publisher. With the successful relaunch of Zombie Tramp, Action Lab begins to take it’s place as a destination for top flight talent and innovative ideas. Zombie Tramp will have a limited edition Comicon variant for sale at the Action Lab booth during Comicon International: San Diego 2014 drawn by series creator Dan Mendoza.

Bo Plushy Gangsta # 3 Review

BO PLUSHY GANGSTA # 3
Written by Pavel Balabanov
Art by Pavel Balabanov
English Translantion by Jason Martin
Action Lab: Danger Zone

This will be a spoiler free review.

THIS REVIEW WILL HAVE STRONG LANGUAGE. YOU’VE BEEN WARNED.
(I am having fun with this review ... so if you don't like strong language ... forgive me but this seemed appropriate.)

Bo finds himself facing off against weird snake alien thing called The Serpent aka Puppet Master. As the two square off, we find out how Bo came to be there and something very familiar and important to Bo is in the hands of Puppet Master.

THE GOOD:
Holy SHIT! This book is just amazing. It is very surreal to see a plushy bear with an afro beat up an alien, snake thing. And it was glorious. Balabanov work is great from start to finish. The writing was very much fitting of current hip hop culture. The characterizations were refreshing, showing both characters in the issue playing various mind games to keep the suspense. The dialogue was certainly authentic with some great pacing. This book felt written as a one and done issue while still advancing an overall plot, much like the classic books of the 60s. Balabanov really gives us some more layers to Bo, showing his courage, his fear and his determination.
Balabanov’s art was simply full of life. The panels were definitely a bit more dynamic; art just popping out the muthafuckin pages. And the action … that shit was off the chain. There was guns. There was knives. There was some crazy shit and explosions. Balabanov really put great energy in the smooth pencils and colors that graced the entire issue.  There is a great use of shadow and the character design are just like FIRE.  With a healthy dose of kick ass action to go with the spirited fuckin’ dialogue,  this book is just amazeballs!

THE BAD:
Not a fuckin’ thing. DAMN son!

THE VERDICT:

This book was just amazing from start to finish. It was easy to follow, creative and dynamic through great art and story. Pick this book up or you be missing on on that good good son! This book ain't for no bitchasses now. I give Bo Plushy Gangsta # 3 a solid muthafukkin 5 … out of 5.

As Bo Plushy’s showdown with the “Roswell” gang and their boss, the Serpent (a.k.a. Puppet
Master) continues, things aren’t what they appear! Does the Puppet Master have the voodoo teddy
gangsta by the strings? Or is it the other way ‘round? Come on, it’s Bo!

FCBD: Zombie Tramp/Ehmm Theory Issue

FCBD: ZOMBIE TRAMP/EHMM THEORY
Zombie Tramp
Written by Dan Mendoza & Jason Martin
Art by TMChu, Dan Mendoza & Jason Martin

Ehmm Theory
Written by Brockton McKinney
Art by Larkin Ford & Aimee Hanchey
Action Lab: Danger Zone

This will be a Spoiler Free Review.

Janey is hitchhiking across the desert when she gets picked up. As she takes her ride, we go through the events of both previous mini-series. And as her hitchhiker is looking for some payment, he finds Janey’s price a bit steep.

In the Ehmm Theory side of things … SHIT GETS REAL! Okay. Yeah. That was really blunt. More or less, Mindwolf ends up meeting up with Gabriel and Whiskers again … just NOT the Gabriel and Mr. Whiskers we know.

THE GOOD:
We got some good writing by Mendoza and Martin. Janey is reflecting on the past while seeing where she, as a person, has gotten to. Mendoza and Martin go through the highlights of both miniseries well while allowing Janey to find how strong she has become. The pacing is great and the dialogue feels authentic.
TMChu definitely has a different style than Mendoza but very much fits Zombie Tramp. Sure, the boobs are colossal … like Mendoza’s … and TMChu does have some influence in grindhouse in his art but not as much as Mendoza. Considering the story is about progress, TMChu’s style reflects that.  Mendoza gives some great panel work during the flashbacks.  Martin and Mendoza do a great job using color at the end of the book … both with Mendoza limited color style while Martin’s coloring of the book sets the mood right.
So, overall, this short was about transition and it works.

Ehmm Theory throws up quite a few surprises … which is pretty  status quo for them if you have read the original miniseries. McKinney, as usual, writes a balls to the wall yet extremely intelligent script as we find out that Gabe and Mr. Whiskers are different … and why they are different. It adds another element to Ehmm Theory while also allowing readers to kind of learn more of Mindwolf, who played a pivotal, yet small role in the original miniseries. As we get a little bit of what happened before with hints at what’s to come, McKinney uses smart dialogue and strong characterization to fit it all in one great package.
Meanwhile, Ford and Hanchey do a great job. Ford’s cartoony/modern comic fused style really shines with great actions, strong panels and good amount of detail. They shine with all kinds of beings, proportions and backgrounds. Ford’s work is better than ever. Haney’s colors are strong, giving a nice shine and tone to Ford’s art. Really great stuff.

THE BAD:
TMChu’s work might throw off some people who are used to Mendoza. Yet, it’s not that bad in my opinion.

FINAL VERDICT:

This FCBD issue was strong, with great stories and art. Really great stuff. I give Zombie Tramp/Ehmm Theory FCBD issue a 9 … out of 10.

Straight Forward Reviews : Night Of The 80s Undead # 2

The totally 80s and totally coked out violence have come back for another issue! Action Lab Danger Zone is back with the over the top Night of the 80s Undead.

Writer - Jason Martin

Artist - Bill McKay

Publisher - Action Lab

Review by Jeremias de Leon

Story

Without any spoilers at all, the story can be summed up as carnage and mayhem in the most 80s pop way imaginable. The disaster is spreading and all the characters are doing what they can to survive with varying degrees of success.

The dialog is very smartly written with snark thrown in. So you're getting a comic that's not only clever but will make you laugh, despite the high amounts of gore and violence being thrown at you left and right.

Art

The art in this comic has a charm about it that's reminiscent of cartoons around this time and the 90s as well only much better detailed. The violence has this really meaty look to it where it looks like it really is extreme as the comic is trying to make it. The colors are great in this issue as well. It's something that caught my eye as it is not done in any traditional way and mixes two kinds of medium that creates a sort of gritty effect on the art which is perfect for a horror book.

Verdict

The Night of the 80s Undead is the dream of any old school horror fan and all the 80s references and funny dialog are icing on the cake. With even more delicious, sweet icing with the unique art style this comic boasts. I give Night of the 80s Undead a 9.5 out of 10. Just be sure you can handle the violence and brief nudity.

1st Impressions: NIGHT OF THE 80s UNDEAD Review

NIGHT OF THE 80s UNDEAD
Written by Jason Martin
Art by Bill McKay
Action Lab Entertainment

FLIPPING THROUGH:

So we open to some narration about the book taking place in the 80s. During the Regan Era where the Cold War is high … and lots and lots of cocaine. Quick … cut to Magnum PI … or one hell of a facimilie is doing coke … and take someone’s head off with teeth and hands.

Cut to a teenage girl who was walking outside to meet with her friend. The teen is named Sarah, who is looking very nerdy. Her friend Linda, looking wholesome, picks her up. In true 80’s fashion, the girls drive off and change to go to a party to have fun. Meanwhile, a slew of stars are having “nose candy” as it gets tubular. Major actors and stars enjoy fun coke party while one party has a particular foreign actor talking about having lots of sex.

Sarah finds the party that Linda took her too is quite boring to her since there is only alcohol. And Sarah walks over to the party next door … you know … the one with the stars. Linda follows her and the tow meet up with a star … with underwear on its head.

ART:

McKay’s style may seem simplistic but really works well for the book and story. All of the celebrities that were hinted at looked much like their real life versions. The backgrounds were impressive. McKay captures the 80s in a very, visually appealing way.  The simple style allows for a good range of emotion. The panels are well done. The gore was well done. Kind of campy but that definitely fits the story.

McKay really has a strong outlines for characters while also allowing for fluid movement. The colors were vibrant this issue and the over all 80s theme was put on display with all the little things that really make this book feel that it is a true ode to the 80s stylistically.

WRITING:

Martin gives us a love letter to the 80s in this book. Martin nails the atmosphere, the vocabulary and the campiness of the 80s in a really, greatly crafted story. The main characters were 80s tropes but still allows for some development. Sarah, would normally, be more timid of the two but he switched that up with Linda. Sarah is definitely more of a bad girl wanting to have fun but even more outspoken. Linda was definitely the 80s female sidekick and was a lot of fun.

The famous people in this comic came out of droves!  We got actors from television, sports & movies were gracing themselves .. . also main characters and Martin works them in perfectly. Martin exploits the 80s in a fun way where the entire experience of the book is enjoyable. The plot is easy to follow. The idea of how the “zombies” in this book are unconventional. This was a very, smartly written plot. The dialogue is witty, 80s centric but very relatable. And Martin can go from funny to scary in a blink of an eye.  Simply one of the best comics I have ever read.

OVER ALL IMPRESSION:

Really great art. Full of surprises. Great characters. Interesting storyline and plot. And everything about this book screams fun and horrible all at the same time. The book has a choice for a soundtrack with even what to listen to watch track during what scene. Brilliant in concept & execution. One of the most original & fun books I have ever read.

RATING:

This is so 80s but in a good way. This book is fun and wonderful. I give Night of the 80s Undead a far out 10 … Out of 10! BUY THIS BOOK!
