Straight Forward Reviews : Archer and Armstrong # 19
The eponymous duo are back again for more action against Bloodshot and the H.A.R.D Corps.
Writer - Fred Van Lente
Artist - Pere Pérez
Publisher - Valiant
Review by Jeremias de León
Story
This issue is mostly action but the story is told through the action, which is nice. It gives important information without feeling like it's dragging on since there is some bullets flying or punches being thrown.
I usually try not to spoil much in these reviews, and this time will be no exception. What I will say about the plot is that it seems to borrow heavily from big budget action movies, but with some more comedy. That is not a bad thing at all because it's still pretty original and it's extremely intriguing. Note that I said this issue borrowed and not copied or stole from action movies. Fred Van Lente knows how to take what's worked before and put his own spin on things to make it uniquely his. Also, if you wanted to see just how far Archer's abilities that were explained in issue 0 and in recent previous issues go this issue shows just that.
Of course Armstrong isn't too far behind in the fray and Bloodshot does show up, but if you want to see them in a more prominent role it seems you'll have a tiny bit of waiting to do. They are important to the storyline of course but this issue is mostly focused on Archer and his fight.
Art
The art in this issue is quite well detailed. On the panels that don't have any action going on it looks like plenty of work went in to give them a specific kind of tone. On the panels with action in it, the art looks like it was made to look like as good as any high quality action animation. Which I'm fairly impressed with.
Verdict
This was a hard book to put down. After reading it once I wanted to go back and look at the action scenes and just take some extra moments to appreciate the art in them. The book still has it's trademark humor too which makes it even more enjoyable. Add all that up and you have a fantastic issue here. I give Archer and Armstrong issue 19 a 9.5 out of 10.

Straight Forward Reviews : X-O Manowar # 21
Coming off the heels of the events in Unity # 3 comes X-O Manowar # 21!
Writer - Robert Vendetti
Artist - Cary Nord
Publisher - Valiant
Review by Jeremias de Leon
Story
As mentioned above, this issue takes place right after Unity # 3 and follows what happens with Aric right after the big events happening then.
Before reading this issue, it's best if you read Unity # 3 as the impact of this story will be felt and the transition from the last issue to this one won't seem weird. Although, the comic does a good job of not leaving you in the dark on exactly what happened. So, it's not required but it is recommended.
The story in this issue focuses on Aric's new plans; which are mainly the safety of his people, who all happen to be incarcerated along with him. The story gets filled out with flashbacks to Aric's youth and we see like we have in previous issues why Aric fought to keep the land he proclaimed to be for his people. They've been in captivity so long and he has had to see his people with bars and fences around them for so long that he's utterly sick of it. We also see the starts of what seems to be a new arc for Aric in this issue. A government agent explains to Aric that they didn't get what they wanted out of him but that it seems that he can have other uses. Without spoilers, of course, it seems that these other uses will lead to a new story arc and that it seems right to keep the name X-O Manowar for this series.
The pacing is really well done and the dialog is really intriguing. Aric, speaking to the government agent, was pretty cool and something I see that can be in a movie.
Art
I have mentioned before that I like the art style the series is using right now. The color palette reminds me of old Street Fighter promotional art.
I am aware there are people who find the art style strange or don't like it however. It is still technically well done though and the art won't detract from enjoying the story. You might not like it, but, in this review, I say it's excellent.
Verdict
Valiant's comics lately have been hitting us with crazy curveballs and X-O Manowar is no exception. For that, I stopped guessing what might happen in future issues and just enjoy the ride. Coming right after Unity # 3, X-O Manowar melds action, suspense and even a little mystery for what turned out to be a fantastic comic. I give X-O Manowar # 21 a 10 out of 10.

Halloween Review: Ghost Adventures 100th episode
Ghost Adventures 100th Episode:
The Exorcist House
Ghost Adventures reached their 100th
episode milestone. They've also been in their eighth season for a while now. It
has been decent; not too bad not too excited but we're only eight episodes into
said season. The place that happened to be investigating on their 100th episode
was the house that inspired the popular movie The Exorcist.
A bit of history first, it's based
off a book that is based off of events that took place in 1949. It started in
Maryland and ended in St. Louis where the exorcism took place. A boy who has
remained unnamed even after all these years, experienced demonic possession and
as various sources feel the need to state, he was from a troubled home. Some
details are sketchy and vary in places but cutting it down to size those facts
remain the same.
The movie plot is different
obviously, but it had plenty of rumors surrounding it like deaths before the
film release and a fire that took place on set. It was probably not related to
the fact that they were filming a movie about an actual event, but it's still
fun to look at some of the facts found on the internet. She mentioned the whole
'the kid and his grandmother were playing with an Ouija board and that's how
the demon possessed him' story. There may be variations on this throughout the
internet but bottom line a demon showed up and possessed the boy and might have
told them to go to St. Louis, or they had relatives in St. Louis and thought
maybe a vacation might help their son's behavior, insert theory here. There was
a different show, unrelated to Ghost Adventures that mentioned the boy having
Louis carved into his body and for the life of me I don't remember what it was,
when I watched it, and what channel it was on.
The Exorcist house episode was
pretty interesting. It dealt with the possibility of demons again and with
their history with demonic hauntings, and the great niece of the priest who did
the exorcism stating she knows it was real (the 1949 exorcism) and refused to
be interviewed anywhere near the home were pretty chilling starters to the
whole episode. I feel the balance of interviews and pre-investigation theatrics
to set up the whole tone of the episode leaned more towards the interviews and
reminding you that, this is where one of the most famous exorcisms in history
took place and there may be a demon still here but it could just be residual as
well. It's not that the investigation lacked in evidence because they received
some very compelling evidence, I just felt like I had to wait forever to get to
the investigation, and then once the investigation happened it didn't hold up
to the hype. I do like how this episode really shows how much they've grown as a
team and how they've 'grown up' when it comes to this case. In the earlier
seasons Zak was very full charge guns blazing when it came to demons and it was
very reckless. However they were still trying to re-invite a demon into a house
which is just a stupid and reckless as going in guns blazing.
I haven't given praise where praise
is due. They did get good EVPs and had an intense spirit box session. Those
were the two that stood out to me. I disagree with the use of the Ouija board
but they weren't necessarily using it as indented. It was just sitting there as
a trigger object to get the voices. However, the Ouija board might have had
something attached to it because later on they interviewed the guy they got the
board from and he said he saw a shadow figure in his house after previously
using the board. So was it the residual energy or actually active energy of the
house or was it something brought in with the board the whole time? Either way
they got some pretty good evidence whether it was the spirits they were trying
to initially contact or different ones.
I know they can't always get
definite answers on investigations. Paranormal investigations don't work by
walking in and demanding something to happen and it always happens once you
tell it to do something. Also even if you did a live playback there's still no
way to know if you have a definite yes or no as to the thing you want answered
about the haunting. It's rather disappointing that they went in and got half of
an answer but they did their best on their limited time schedule. This episode
wasn't a complete failure, it was rather successful, but I couldn't felt but
feel slightly disappointed. I can't put my finger on what disappointed me about
the whole thing. Normally I know what disappoints me about an episode of
anything, not this one. So I'll give it an okay approval. It wasn't mind
blowing, while it did have some mind blowing evidence.

Straight Forward Reviews : Night Of The 80s Undead # 2
The totally 80s and totally coked out violence have come back for another issue! Action Lab Danger Zone is back with the over the top Night of the 80s Undead.
Writer - Jason Martin
Artist - Bill McKay
Publisher - Action Lab
Review by Jeremias de Leon
Story
Without any spoilers at all, the story can be summed up as carnage and mayhem in the most 80s pop way imaginable. The disaster is spreading and all the characters are doing what they can to survive with varying degrees of success.
The dialog is very smartly written with snark thrown in. So you're getting a comic that's not only clever but will make you laugh, despite the high amounts of gore and violence being thrown at you left and right.
Art
The art in this comic has a charm about it that's reminiscent of cartoons around this time and the 90s as well only much better detailed. The violence has this really meaty look to it where it looks like it really is extreme as the comic is trying to make it. The colors are great in this issue as well. It's something that caught my eye as it is not done in any traditional way and mixes two kinds of medium that creates a sort of gritty effect on the art which is perfect for a horror book.
Verdict
The Night of the 80s Undead is the dream of any old school horror fan and all the 80s references and funny dialog are icing on the cake. With even more delicious, sweet icing with the unique art style this comic boasts. I give Night of the 80s Undead a 9.5 out of 10. Just be sure you can handle the violence and brief nudity.

Straight Forward Reviews : Quantum and Woody issue 4
Quantum and Woody is back with more antics and we're back with another Straight Forward Review.
The art in this book is pretty lively. Considering that the book is mainly a comedy one the fact that every character looks a little exaggerated when moving and that some characters have exaggerated features works really well in this issue.
Writer - James Asmus
Artist - Tom Fowler
Publisher - Valiant
Review by Jeremias de Leon
Story
Quantum tracked down an ERA base to find out more about what happened with his father, while Woody is hanging around in front of the mysterious Crone. There's still good amounts of comedy but this issue focuses on fleshing out the backstory of what the ERA is and what exactly happened with Quantum and Woody's dad.
There's also something mysterious that appears for now to at least not be an enemy that the rest of ERA is terrified of. Something to possibly become a big plot point in the next few issues.
Art

During parts that act as flashbacks during the issue there is a color overtone for whoever is speaking and that's a cool thing to do too. Overall the art is where it needs to be for the antics going on this issue.
Verdict
First off the writing in this issue is phenomenal, the dialog is a blast to read. Reading about the backstory of ERA and the brothers' dad was great too, and it really makes me want to see what else they learn about him and about their powers. As already mentioned the art is good in this issue and some of the gags, like the one with an ERA member and his body, made me laugh out loud. This comic is seriously funny and seriously entertaining I give this a wholehearted 9.5 out of 10.
