Happy 2nd Birthday Broken Infinite!!!

This is a milestone. Today, there was two years to the day that I started Broken Infinite. There has been so much that has come and gone since those two years. And I really do appreciate everything that has been done.  We have come a long way.
When this started two years ago, I wanted to strike out with my friends on our own. And while Jeff Williams, Eric McLeod, Darryll B. Carter and Hector Ramirez have since moved on ... we all wanted to do things our own way.
Since then, the site has gone through changes ... lots and lots of changes. People have come and gone. We have had features and more. Hell, I am running this website and am EIC of Herotaku. But, just because I been there, I haven't forgotten about my child, Broken Infinite.
There is gonna to be more to come. You will see some changes within the next few weeks. There is gonna be a plethora of new content and a harder edge. We are gonna go back a bit old school here. The video playlists will start returning. We will continue to break the cycle with more content, looking at the comic book industry from not just the Big Two but a whole and do more to entertain you.

There are exciting things on the horizon. And there is so much we want to do and will do in the future. It's been two years and I wanted to do it right.
I want to thank all the people that have posted or who are posting on the Broken Infinite:

Straight Forward Reviews : PRINCELESS Vol 1

This review is from the original release of the first volume of Princeless. Read on for an addendum.

This week the first volume of Princeless is the subject for review. Written by Jeremy Whitley with art and colors by M. Goodwin. A drastic change from last week's graphic novel review The Monkey King,  Princeless is an all ages affair. How well does it stack up?

Review by by Jeremias de Leon

Story:

Princeless follows the heroine Adrienne as she quests with her dragon Sparky, and, later a half dwarf named Bedelia Smith, to rescue her sisters who are locked in towers, after deciding to save herself from the tower she was locked in. In a nutshell that is the story. But here's a little bit of backstory to add onto that. Adrienne's father is the king of the land, called Ashland, and he locks up his daughters in tall towers that are guarded by mythical beasts. In the world for this story princes are trained and princesses are locked up in towers by their parents in the hopes, at least for the parents, that the prince that rescues them is a strong man that can be a strong heir.
On top of the plot of Adrienne rescuing her sisters there's also a lot of satire directed at stereotypes in Disney and Disney like princess movies and action comics that feature a female protagonist. The rest of this paragraph will give examples. In the first issue Adrienne's skin color is brought up when the prince who tries to rescue her asks where the “fair maiden Adrienne” is and she responds that fair means white and adds “does this look fair to you?” There's also a fairy tale that Adrienne is being read to that tells of a “blonde-haired, blue-eyed princess” that was the “loveliest in all the land.” Later on in issue three after meeting Bedelia, Adrienne gets a tour of the “Woman Warriors Collection” that features armors that parody certain famous warrior women. Satirizing the fact that the trend with what are supposed to be strong warrior women are that they all have large bust sizes and wear next to nothing, which of course, wouldn't be practical in combat.

Art:

To start off the commentary on the art, the character designs are simple, but brilliant. They aren't drawn with complex, photo realistic features, or extremely detailed clothes and shadows, but they are drawn with personality. Every time any of the characters faces are shown on panel, one can see exactly what emotion they are feeling. Their body types also say a lot, Adrienne's dad the king is intimidating because he is drawn as a very large man that is made of muscle. Bedelia looks like she's clearly used to doing hard work at her family's blacksmith shop with her athletic body.

Besides the character designs the bright colors, lighting, and effects like fire are all done in a way that clearly sets the mood of the panel. The simple designs and lustrous colors work very well for the action scenes.

Characters:

This is where Princeless shines. Whitley knows how to write complex, engaging characters. The main character, Adrienne is a very sharp witted girl. She questions why things are the way they are, and with her unwittingly placed in a tower the reader can feel why she has the drive to rescue herself and her sisters. Her brother Devin, is a meek young man who has no interest in becoming a warrior. It's understandable why he would risk himself to help his sister. The half dwarf Bedelia has a lot of troubles at the blacksmith shop she works at so it's understandable that she'd want to leave and join Adrienne. Plus, something happened to the shop and she wouldn't want to stick around anyway.

Each character has motives that are relatable, and each one feels like that they truly do have their own personality. They are definitely not handsome man, or sexy woman number 5089D. They really do feel like real people and when they feel like real people the dialog is a treat to read and the reader can understand why they end up in the situations they do, or why they take the actions they take. After reading these four issues it's hard not to become attached to the characters.

Verdict:

Princeless is an entertaining, clever and eye catching comic series that anyone in any age range can enjoy. The characters are witty, the art is colorful, and the plot is easy to follow without feeling like it's insulting anyone's intelligence.

This comic series gets a 9.5 out of 10.

Yes, it is that good.

These first four issues were re-released as "Encore Edition" with the final issue of volume 1 re-released on February 26, 2014. The contents are still the same with a variant cover by John "Super Ugly" Williams. If you haven't bought these before now's a chance to get them with a nice extra variant cover.

Happy Anniversary Broken Infinite ... Along Came An EZ Rider & More

AND IT ALL BEGINS .. . AGAIN

Yes. I am stealing the line from both WWE & Freddy Kruger. But this really feels like a great new start. 1 year ago today, I decided to break away from J1 Studios and start Broken Infinite … and built the site. Yep. One year ago, I was busy putting in code and getting the site launched. It was a very big turning point for me and for those who follow me. Speaking of which, those who followed me as we started BI were Jeremias de Leon (Xaos), Jeff Williams (16 bit Jeff), Durga (Eric McLeod), Darryll B Carter, & Hector Ramirez.

There have been quite a few people who have come & gone from BI since then. There have been a lot of new blood lately. TWK, The Navigator, Yamiangie, Bobbert33, Ed the Crimson, Mahogany Cow, MadShadow42, Darkon633, Pugsly6883, Wheelchair21, BAClend of  Laid Back Comics, Visible Ninja, Brotha Doug, Devin Walker, Big Cheese KIT & more have filled up our ranks. The site is very different from what it was.

I always wanted Broken Infinite to be a place where people can be themselves and really enjoy what they love be it comics, gaming, anime, tokusatsu & more. This site has grown so much in the last year and I am proud of what it is becoming. We are moving into another phase in its development.

So, Broken Infinite is one years old. What will happen next? Over the next 24 hours, you are gonna see content from a bunch of our contributors, every hour … on the hour. Plus, I’m am pleased to announce that EZ Rider himself will be official joining.  Yes. You’ll be seeing Toku Time and all of EZ’s works now here … in the Infinite. So please, welcome EZ with your views & comments.

In honor of you, our readers, viewers, contributors and friends … we will have a new post of content every hour on the hour with some other content. We will be showing you much of our coverage of Wizard World Philadelphia 2013 including interviews with creators, footage, pics & more. So, it’s a celebration … enjoy. We here at the Broken Infinite thank you.  Thank you to Valiant Comics for being with us for a year now & showing their universe. Thank you to Aspen Comics & Action Lab Entertainment for helping us a long and letting us into their worlds. Thank you for anyone who contributes, had contributes and/or help BI over this last year.

And from the bottom of my heart, thank you. Time to Break the Cycle again. Get ready cause you ain’t seen nothing yet.

Tag Team Review: ARCHER & ARMSTRONG # 8

TAG TEAM REVIEW

ARCHER & ARMSTRONG # 8
Written by Fred Van Lente
Art by Emanuela Lupacchino, Guillermo Ortega & Matt Milla

By Jeremias de Leon & Frankie Rodriguez

Welcome to the very first  tag team review. Every month, there will be at least one review where more than 1 review it tackles the same book. Why? To get different perspective on things. For our first edition, Jeremias de Leon & Frankie Rodriguez (me) decide to examine another buddy book. Buddies reviewing a buddy book. Yep. Sit back and enjoy as we review Valiant's Archer & Armstrong # 8.

FLIPPING THROUGH:

J: In this issue, Stan Lee jumped into the Valiant Universe & said, “I am STAN LEE. I am nobody’s bitch. YOU … ARE . . . MINE.”

F: Um … no he didn’t. But we did get a guest appearance from Bob Barker aka Oroochimaru.

J: In the issue, Armstrong reminisce about  . . . “happier” days, before rudely interrupted by gunfire and a high speed chase.

F: “Happier” days is right. Armstrong was doing his best James Franco impression from Pineapple Express! “Happier” days equals “HIGHER” days.

J: As a kite, man. We also get to see the fruits of the Null's labor and why they're a credible threat. Also, one of the characters who doesn't even smoke weed has probably the best trip of all.

F: Too true. The Null comes up with a new element called Zornium which can destroy the universe … or resurrect Lindsay Lohan’s career.

J: Like casting a Phoenix Down on a zombie? We also see that mother nature seems rather... two faced. The Null doesn't seem to be ill equipped to fight Archer and Armstrong and their amazing friends either. They put in motion a plan most foul. I have to say this issue does great with suspense.

F: 2 faced is putting it lightly. This Gaia looks like if Batista decided to to be a contestant in Rupaul's drag race why "reading" our new Geomancer. Meanwhile, we get an interesting Coup de grace from a certain female who is dressed saying "Hit Me Baby One More Time" ... and she does!

J: Yeah, it seems she's either losing her mind, or isn't as benevolent as we all thought. It's a good thing we see that certain female. On account of the Null's plan, Her appearance might be a good thing. Yet again, I have to say it seems the writing is on the ball here because it's doing suspense right.

F: Gilad is still a badass ... a stick in the mud but a badass. And our comic ends with ... dun dun dun ...

J: Seems that plan of the Null will put a big strain on Archer and Armstrong's friendship. That's putting it lightly of course.

ART:

F: You know, I have been following Emauela Lupacchino since X-Factor, and the art just keeps getting better and better. Teamed with Ortego, there is a lot of clean, thick links with good detail, with lots to look at in terms of characters and backgrounds.

J: The colors are alright, everything that stands out should and the colors that are there for obvious story reasons like the "two faces" of Gaia are done properly and get the message across. What really sticks out to me is the way motion is drawn. Nothing is subtle but because of that you can believe they are really moving, fighting, jumping and shooting.

F: From the kinetic action of being shot at while driving golf carts to an explosion ... blowing up near your arm, the book provides great amounts of stunning visuals.

STORY:

J: On to the writing. Fred Van Lente still keeps Armstrong's mouth and Archer is still as stoic as ever. The addition of the Geomancer and Eternal Warrior in these past few issues have been something. It seems as expected the Eternal Warrior has mellowed since his first appearance though he's still acting like he's got a severe case of Christian Bale-Batman-itis. Or maybe that's just how he sounded in my head. The Geomancer developed nicely as a character as well in this issue. She seems to have a backbone even calling out the two faced Gaia. The thing that happens at the ending is actually very interesting because of this character development, now that we know the characters. It'll be good to see their relationships be tested.

F: Van Lente is masterful with the way how he works his characters  around the plot while still providing entertaining scenes. You think these scenes are nothing but character development but actually working it into the plot. There are a lot of endearing traits to Armstrong while being able to seeing why Gilad can get annoyed with him. The Null have turned into some creepy villains with the Last Enemy being even creepier than I could have imaged. I appauld the great character work. Like Jerry said, I LOVED the new Geomancer standing up to the spirit of the planet. And I like the subplots that are growing, which feel very organic. Fred Van Lente masterful pacing made this book so much better.  Excellent work on a book that is one of the best in the market.

OVERALL RATING:

J: Well, now that we have all that said on the book only one thing is left, or two if you count our combined one, and that's our ratings. Verdict time! I give this a 9 out of 10.

F: As for me, Van Lente provides one of the strongest narratives here with great art. I am getting emotionally invested in this book and look forward to its conclusion. I give this book a 8.5 out of 10.

___

FINAL VERDICT:

We really enjoyed the book. And while I (Frankie) gave it an 8.5, it is more due to the fact that I haven't been reading this book like Jerry has. So, with that in mind, we give it an average score of  9 arrows to the throat out of 10.

Perception # 1

Issue #1
Created & Written by Jeremias de Leon

Somewhere in Nevada a man named Jarmo Lehti is looking out of his kitchen window in his boring, plain apartment. Though he would have no reason to spruce the place up, however. In his line of work he has to make sure he can move out at a moments notice. There's always someone who thinks they can get their revenge on whoever put them away, even if they're in law enforcement.

Jarmo isn't staring out into space through his window though. There is a reason. An advantage to living in a rough neighborhood, criminals don't think a cop would be very close by. Let alone living in one of these rundown apartments. The punks he's been surveying are even daring enough to speak loudly about their activity. Jarmo quickly realizes it's about drugs and begins to listen intently.

“Seems that's the last of the trinity Paul” said the first punk wearing a large sunglasses.

“We better go get some more from Mr. Frank” said the other punk wearing a bandana. Both wearing white t-shirts with jeans hanging low.

“That guy scares me honestly” Paul stated with a no nonsense look on his face, he looked down then continued. “It's not even because he intimidates me or anything, it's because of his boss, I never met the guy but he's some major trouble Bret.”

“I feel ya, I heard a lot of his boys were in some major firefight” Bret replied.

“But let's shut up and get some more of that stuff man.” Paul interrupted.

“Right.”

Jarmo quickly begins to process all the information he just heard and begins to think on what it could mean. “They mentioned a firefight, there was a pretty nasty one some months ago it even involved an explosion, somewhere in Florida.” Jarmo stands up and reaches into his pants pocket, he's wearing green cargo pants and a blue button shirt that has a chest pocket.
“Let me get my phone, I bet if I look at my contacts I can remember who told me about the explosion.” As Jarmo scrolls through his contact list he sees names go by “Billy, Darryl, Jeff, Jake... that guy still owes me five bucks... let's see... ah! There we are.” Jarmo held his hand high as if he won a trophy looking at the name that gave him the previous information about an explosion in Florida. “It's time he told me more.”

As Jarmo decides his current course of action he leaves his apartment, mutters “Paul and Bret sunglasses and bandana...” and heads to the city's civic center, something most of his colleagues scratch their heads over whenever they notice he feels like getting some air and clearing his mind. Why not a bar or a more normal place? They usually ask. If there was something actually happening when he goes there they would get it but he just goes there, no matter what's happening. Which is usually nothing.

As he gets to his destination he finally phones the one who he plans to get more information out of. “Hey mr. Ramirez, it's Jarmo.”

“Ah, mr. Lehti! How's my favorite Nordic detective?” Ramirez asked with a very jolly tone.

“Eh, another day another plot with drugs and explosions being uncovered, speaking of explosions...”

“I'm guessing you want to know about the explosion in Florida.” replied Mr. Ramirez.

“Right on the money, man, so do we know anything about the people involved in that crazy firefight, I heard some punks near my apartment mentioning that firefight and explosion and Trinity being distributed here through whoever the boss of all those guys were.”

“Cesar Monticello,” Mr. Ramirez said without skipping a beat.

“Who?”

“Cesar Monticello. He's the boss of the guys in the firefight, apparently they were having a shootout with two feds. Speaking of one of those feds is in your state...”

“What!?” Jarmo exclaimed.

“Yeah, you see that agent just happens to be a friend with one of my other acquaintances she is her friend... or cousin, I don't know I was kinda just staring at her rack when she was telling me.”

Jarmo quipped “I thought attention to details was your specialty.”

“She had a big rack man...” retorted Mr. Ramirez.

“Uh... huh well, thanks for the info you said she's at a hospital in Nevada? That explains the increase in feds I've seen here. Where in Nevada man?”

“Condor Falls.”

“Condor Falls? That's only a half hour from here, even though I'm not a state trooper I think I should check it out anyway.”

Jarmo decides to make his way to back to his apartment first, on his way he has the good fortune of spotting two fellows, one with a large sunglasses, one with a bandana and both wearing the same clothes. “Well, if it isn't my two friends Bret and Paul.” Jarmo says with a grin. “Hey, you two! Stop right there and don't move.”

“Heh, who this guy think he is, a cop?” Paul said sneering.

“You're onto something there” replied Jarmo.

“Ah... crap” Bret said with a heavy sigh.

“So you're going to tell me about this 'Trinity' dealer you have, and you're going to tell me what this guy's boss has going on over here in Nevada.” Jarmo said authoritatively.

“Ha, you're going to get nothing out of us, cop except a hospital visit!” yelled Paul.

“In a way I was kinda hoping for this, I mean I like to just hang back and gather info but sometimes I need some action.” a little bit of excitement was coming out of Jarmo's voice as he said that.

“Stop talking!” Paul yelled while throwing a straight punch. As straight as an untrained hoodlum can throw anyway. Jarmo sways his shoulder to the left and throws a right hook to Paul's jaw followed by another hook to the jaw with the same hand. Jarmo grins and as Paul puts his hand up to block another blow to the face Jarmo explodes with a left to the gut and lands his last hit a jaw jacking uppercut, perfect for knocking out criminals a criminal uppercut if you will. “So you're going to tell me what's going on or do you want to have a shot at taking me out as well?” asks Jarmo.

“You just got lucky man, I'm taking you out!” yells Bret.

“They never learn, well, I'm going to need you conscious...” Jarmo whispers.

As Bret goes to grab Jarmo, Jarmo stomps on Bret's toe, then grabs Bret's left arm and executes a key-lock throw. As Jarmo has him on the ground he quickly gets up and kicks him in the ribs. “gees cop, you ever heard of police brutality?”

“Huh, oh no, you see I'm off duty today.” Jarmo then sits on Brets back and begins to interrogate him. Bret finally tells him of Mr. Frank and his spread of Trinity. With that knowledge Jarmo finally makes it to his apartment and grabs a small camera, makes it to his car and drives off to Condor Falls.

At Condor Falls, Jarmo notices multiple men and women in black the closer he got to the hospital. “Feds, everywhere it seems, surely they're here to make sure nobody can get close to that woman. Like I care, I just want to make sure they get out of here and go back to the east coast.”

He finally makes it to the hospital. “Alright, here at Kelsey Crusher... someone here ought to have some answers on why this Monticello guy wants to spread his network in Nevada.”

He begins to walk to the info desk and scouts the area around him. “More dudes in black eh? Hmm, I thought they were all feds before but these guys... something is... off about them. Anyway, let's see if I can find something out about this woman. They don't know who the crap I am, so I doubt I can just walk into her room, but I bet I can eavesdrop.” Jarmo was able to take a peek at a computer which fortunately was right on the woman's name and room number. “5th floor eh?”

He goes to an elevator and goes up, and as he leaves the elevator door he hears gunshots. “Frak! I didn't bring any heat with me I better frakin' lay low.” Jarmo goes and finds a waiting room near the woman's room and hides under a sofa. As he hears gunshots he hears other noises, noises that you wouldn't hear in a hospital room, at least not outside a lab, and he heard some other noises that definitely belonged to something living, but most definitely not human. After hearing those non-human noises Jarmo decides it's best to leave the hospital and sneaks out. As he gets back in his car to drive to his apartment all he can do is think about the strange noises.

“What was that? Aliens or something? Nah, it can't be that's as silly as some person wearing crazy armor and running amok in Utah of all places. It just can't be aliens.” But one thing was clear to him on the drive back. This is bigger than just drug dealing, and some guy wanting to expand his empire, much bigger, and if he's going to expose the truth he's going to need all the help he can get.

That's it for Perception chapter 1! Leave some feedback please, either here, or contact me on twitter @ikariradio. Look forward to chapter 2 next month.

Archer and Armstong #1 Review

Welcome again readers of the Broken Infinite to another comic book review. This time, I'm looking at the comic Archer and Armstrong published by Valiant.

Archer and Armstrong is part of the Valiant relaunch where the characters of the Valiant universe are re-introduced in new number 1s.

If you didn't know Archer and Armstrong has been around since 1992. It's a sort of buddy comedy with paranormal elements to it.

Well, that was the original Archer and Armstrong anyway, what about the new Archer and Armstrong?

Review by Jeremias de Leon

Story

Archer and Armstrong starts off with a fight happening thousands of years ago at the ancient city of Ur. A few men are seen arguing over using a mysterious, and shown within a few pages shown to be, extremely powerful device. One of the men, named Ivar, starts to fight to prevent it from being used but it's too late.

After that, fast forward to present day. We see a man named Obadiah fighting other people with a variety of martial art styles in a secret place located somewhere inside an amusement park. Apparently, the fights were a test to see who would go out on some "holy mission" to destroy someone they call "he who is not to be named" and give him some artifact that is supposed to track him down.

We then see the boy in New York and well, without spoiling let's just say his world gets flipped upside down.

The story is intriguing to say the least. It has twists and turns that make you want to keep reading, and when you want to keep reading then I have to say the comic did its job. It also does all these twists and turns in a way that doesn't insult your intelligence it doesn't try to come off as totally convoluted or complicated but it does keep you guessing. Well, if you're new to reading Archer and Armstrong anyway. If you've been reading Archer and Armstrong before, you could probably guess where everything is going. However, the origins here do differ from the original. There's mysteries. There's character development with Archer. And, of course, there's comedy and action. Most people really can't say no to this comic based just on what it's about.

Art

The art looks clean and though it does look like a lot of other comics I've read, it's not bland. Matter of fact, I have to say there are some stylish elements that make it stand out. It's not really in the scenes where only dialog is happening; though there are some moments where it looks pretty stylish but it's definitely in the action scenes. With Archer being a martial artist that knows so many styles, the art had to look stylish to reflect all the different things he's able to do. When reading this comic, try and take a longer look at the action scenes and take in what's going on.

Characters

The characters in this comic are pretty memorable. Archer's parents and well, what they do . . .again don't want to spoil it. Archer himself and his reactions to the city of New York and his outlook on the world from his sheltered point of view. Armstrong is also pretty memorable as a big guy who loves to drink and have fun, and is incredibly strong. You really can't do wrong here either.

Verdict

I'm sure you know of two best friends who had a big strong guy and a smaller smart guy. Heck, you might've been one of the two yourself with your friend. I know I was back in high school. Well, Archer and Armstrong really is about two buddies who are great at what they do and are even better together. I can't see why a fan of action and comedy would want to skip on this book. Pick it up. After reading the first issue, you will want to get the next one; you just can't leave Archer and Armstrong's story. It's too intriguing.

Archer and Armstrong gets a 9 out of 10.
