Superior Spiderman: Superior Series?...No, But Not Bad

Hey there, InfiKnights. Your Friendly Neighborhood InfiKnight here. I seriously hope none of you guys were behind the death threats to Dan Slott, I was mad about the end of ASM too, but seriously the man is an amazing writer and you have to admit Peter's death made one hell of a great story plus *Spoiler Alert* Pete's not gone. I have for you a review for  the first four issues of Superior Spiderman so grab your webshooters and let's go boys and girls it's webswinging time.
Okay, so for those of you who don't know Dr. Otto "Octopus" Octavius is now living as Peter Parker, and has vowed to be a better Spiderman then Peter ever and on top of that even a better Peter. On the Peter front he failed miserably. He was a complete jerk to all of his coworkers at Horizon and could in no way romance Mary Jane. In fact when he was on the verge of winning her over he turned her down making her doubt whether reuniting with Peter is even a good idea. On the plus side he's making great Scientific breakthroughs and has re-enrolled Peter at ESU to pursue a doctorates degree.
As Spiderman I'd say he's pretty good but I wouldn't go as far as saying he's superior to Peter. Instead of patrolling the entire city he has Spider-drones in all his patrol areas warning him of danger. This would be highly effective if he actually responded to all the threats. Also he came up against a new makeshift Sinister Six made up of Boomerang, Overdrive, The Living Brain, Speed Demon, Shocker, and a new Beetle. Otto stopped them, even kept The Living Brain as a robot butler, but he almost beat the Boomerang to death which some how awoke Peter's consciousness as a ghost it would appear so that Peter has been Otto's conscience since. But Peter was unable to stop him from killing the Vulture. And oh goody let's see how Otto fares against Green Goblin in the next issue.
The introduction of Peter's 'soul' as he called himself is possibly the saving grace of this series because Otto is to arrogant to relate too. Had it been Otto dealing with all of this on his own his own way yea the series would more likely than not have been horrible. As a Spiderman fan one of the huge draws has always been relating to the hero so well with Otto i don't really see that happening. Given, he had his moments but I honestly would only have read the title otherwise anticipating Peter's return.

Laid Back Comics: Superior Spider-Man

Be warned this does contain spoilers of Superior Spider-Man, though seeing as how late this is it might not matter.

SUPERIOR SPIDER-MAN

So hopefully you read my thoughts on Amazing Spider-Man #700, and if not please check it out before reading this, I couldn’t just sit and not try and see where this story would go in the brand new series Superior Spider-Man.

When we last saw ‘Spider-Man’ it was that Doctor Octopus was now in full control of Peter Parkers body. He has even updating the Spider Suit, which counts as I believe the 5 or 6 costume change Spider-Man has gone through these last few years. We aren’t sure how much time has passed since issue #700 but my guess would be maybe less than two weeks. And while he seems to be savoring his victory over Parker we get to see this new Spider-Man’s first real test against some villains. And in this case a new Sinister Six.
And that is the major plot of the first issue, Spider-Man vs this Sinister Six, which taken at face value this sounds like a Spider-Man story.  And there is where the issue shines, to say new Spider-Man did take the smart route in taking this team down. Setting up a slightly violent way to ease drop on the team, setting up the area to fully take them down, and finally putting the plan full swing. It was well done and smart.

But, like issue 700 I still have problems the characters and interactions with this ‘new’ Spider-Man and Peter Parker. He has become short and almost smug while at work, not to mention dressing JUST LIKE Doctor Octopus, and no one questioning him on this sudden change in altitude or wardrobe. The worst I felt was the scene with Mary Jane at dinner. There is just something a little unsettling as I read through the dialog of that one scene, with the end results of him leering at the chest of Mary Jane. It came off too creepy than anything else. Like watching your uncle hit on your girlfriend. You didn’t know what to say but you just knew this felt wrong.

But, there were some bright spots I thought that would take this character on a direction that was hinted at. At very beginning when it looks like he was just about to leave from the Sinister Six attack, he rushed back in to save a police officer on the scene.  It seemed like an honest moment, and while ‘Peter’ questioned it for a brief moment he never regretted doing it.  It was Doc Ock taking responsibility. The moment was short lived through; by the end of the big the big reveal is that somehow in a yet unknown way Peter was still around doing these small good deeds as a Jedi ghost, for lack of a better term.  Now, this was good as it stopped Ock from killing someone, but this also was ammo for the snark coming from many fans stilling back and yelling, “Called It!” While this allowed some fans to forgive the last story line and tries to see where this will go or for how long, I see it as just a bit of a ploy and almost bait and switch. And I don’t know how long I could honestly follow the series if it just there to lead Spider-Man character backwards.

Now I have been very harsh on the writing and the story, but there was something I greatly enjoyed and it is Ryan Stegman artwork to go along with the series. There is energy behind the art work of Spider-Man that sometimes gets lost on by other artist. Not here, if anything the art makes reading the story a lot easier. I just wish the story behind it was much better.

NYCC: Peter Parket NOT Spider-Man in upcoming re-launch; MJ and Spidey back?

Even though I'm interested in the recently announced Marvel NOW relaunch, The Superior Spider-Man, that doesn't mean I'm questioning some decisions that the comic giant has made with this, like today's news article for example......

According to Newsarama, during a retailer breakfast that was held, this thursday, writer Dan Slott said a few more details with the comic.

Courtesy of the site:

"Dan Slott teased a few more Superior Spider-Man details during a retailer breakfast held at the start of New York Comic Con. Marvel Comics has confirmed that Slott told retailers in attendance that the Spider-Man starring in the January-debuting series is indeed a character other than Peter Parker, and that Spider-Man and Mary Jane would be getting back together — which would mean that Peter and MJ will not be."

Though this was reported by many others comic sites, one actually revealed that this new Spider-Man will have retractable claws.

What will happen to Pete in #700 that has him no longer being "the amazing wall-crawler"? Does he die? Does he once again retire? Is Marvel gonna go extremely drastic and make Pete a villain? More Importantly... who's this new Spider-Man?

Flash Thompson? (currently "Venom"... go read it now)

Kaine? ("The Scarlet Spider".... another Marvel book I recommend)

or if this would be tied in to the ending of this year's event book, Spider-Men....

"WARNING!: If no one has read Spider-Men #5, do read any further and thanks for reading this article."

Miles Morales (616/Mainstream U): Like it's shown in the final panel of Spider-Men. After peter does a "goggle" search on the character, it's possible by his reaction that there is a version of Miles in Peter's universe. It's also possible by judging from his reaction, that they're maybe a connection/Peter knows this "Miles" in his universe.

Whatever happens to Pete and whomever this new wall-crawler is, we won't know until the final issue of Amazing Spider-Man, which is still slated to release on both newsstands & digital download, December 25th. The debut of the relaunch with the new spidey, "The Superior Spider-Man", will be available on newsstands & digital download the following day, December 26th.

Comic News: Details & Artwork for The Superior Spider-Man debut

It was revealed in today's edition of USA Today, that current Amazing Spider-Man writer, Dan Slott and "Amazing" artists, Humberto Ramos and Giuseppe Camuncoli are sticking with the friendly neighborhood wall-crawler with the upcoming re-launch, "The Superior Spider-Man".

Joining Mr. Slott, Mr. Ramos and Mr. Camuncoli for "Superior", is artist Ryan Stegman. Mr. Stegman has recently contributed with Marvel Comics with both Fantastic Four and The Scarlet Spider. His first art duties will be on the debut arc for the book, titled "Hero Or Menace".

While we don't know what will happen to Pete in the final issue of Amazing Spider-Man, issue #700, slated to release on December 25th. It does sound that whatever event happens to unfold in the "finale", it will have a drastic impact on Peter with "Superior".

"A far darker Spider-Man than fans have ever seen." The one thing that does not go with this Spider-Man is the term 'Friendly neighborhood'," said writer Dan Slott. "I've always been the omniscient hand that's been protecting Peter Parker and Spider-Man, and not letting anything too bad happen to him. And now I've become this cruel god. There's something exciting about the, about going, 'Mwah-ha-ha-ha-ha, here is what's going to happen to you, Spider-Man!' And it's drastic and it's big and it's exciting and it's never been done before."

The artist for Superior's frist arc, "Hero Or Menace", Ryan Stegman did talk with USA Today about Spidey's re-designed look for Marvel NOW.

"His belt looks a lot different, and there's points at the end of his glove that add a little aggressiveness to his costume," explains Mr. Stegman. Ryan also promised that Spidey will have new abilities in Superior, something that hasn't happened to the wall-crawler since the 2001 pre-"One More Day" arc, "The Other". Also returning in the future will be The Sinister Six. He finished by discussing how he'll be delivering a unique take on the supporting cast of characters in Pete's daily life.

"I try to keep the history in mind. A lot of guys make Aunt May almost look like a witch, which is something I want to stay away from. Just because you're old, you don't have to look like a monster."

The finale to the "Amazing Spider-Man" ongoing series, issue #700 will be available to purchase both on newstands and through digital distribution on Christmas Day, December 25th.

It's successor and re-launch to coincide with Marvel NOW, "The Superior Spider-Man" will be on newsstands and digital download, the following day, December 26th.

So for that Spider-Man fan in you life, you now have an idea on what to get he/she for this year's  Holiday season...... that, and the Blu-Ray/DVD release of "The Amazing Spider-Man" on November 9th. In other words, this was not only a great year to be a comic reader, but a great year to be a Spider-Man fan and a respective way that Marvel Comics celebrated the character's 50th anniversary.

"Peter Parker and his masked alter-ego, Spider-Man debuted in Amazing Fantasy #15, August 1962. The Amazing Spider-Man ongoing series started in March 1963 with Marvel Comics publishing that title and future titles. The creators of the amazing wall-crawler were Stan "the man" Lee and artist, Steve Ditko. At the start of 1999, the series was relaunched with Vol. 2 and started back to issue #1. However, during the comic's 40th anniversary, the title was reverted back to it's original numbering, with issue #500 in December 2003."
