Tarot: Witch of the Black Rose #78

Now I've been reading a lot into tarot cards lately; lore and implementation. That's what initially pulled me to this cover. Despite that, this cover reached up and grabbed the GU all on its on. I believe this is the first 'WTF' CoW, because when I look at this cover everything makes me say 'WTF'. Sort of like that random cabaret scene within Xeres tent in 300. There is a girl with her head cut off, a demon chick (which is cool), a chick with the head of a warthog and then there's the center piece  that puts Powergirl to shame. I like it! Poking fun aside, the artwork is awesome. I love the birds in the cover and the skulls lurking in the background of that black tanning rack thing. I like the sticks and skulls constructing the border of it too. Huge kudos to Jim Balent! I'll end with this. After discovering Tarot Witch of the Black Rose I went and looked at some of its other covers. Expect to see TWBR again sometime in the future.

CoW: Cover of the Week 11/28/12

The CoW is influenced by my life this time around. I purchased Transformers: Fall of Cybertron from WalMart on Black Friday (for 25 bucks, not bad). I just beat the game Monday night and will be posting a review of it sometime later this week. But let me tell you, it was a wild ride. If you love Transformers; you'll love that game. If you don't it's still a great game. My favorite chapter from the game was when I got to use Grimlock. That's right, "me is king"! It was frick'n awesome! He's totally my favorite Autobot now. Hence why this week Transformers Prime: Rage of the Dinobots #1 takes home the Golden Udder.

                     This week, the Golden Udder goes to a cover that was very simple yet very beautifully drawn. The second volume of the much anticipated "The Fly" series hit stores this past Wednesday.  And it had 3 different covers. Yet, out of all of them, this cover seemed to really talk to me. The emotion and pain that was on this cover spoke to my soul. The simplicity and intimacy of the cover made it stand out over all the others. So kudos to artist Darick Robertson for taking the Golden Udder this week.

This week's CoW comes from none other than Todd McFarlane himself. To continue Image's 20th anniversary and Spawn's continuing celebration, McFarlane has been doing lots of cover omages to famous covers throughout comics. Yet, This week's Spawn #224 really struck a cord as McFarlane takes a bit from The Dark Knight Returns with this cover. This cover was suggested by brand new BI member, BAC of Laid Back Comics.

      Spawn looks amazing and McFarlane has Frank Miller's style down to a tee here. It is beautiful, grim and dark; much like the cover it is inspired by. Kudos Mr. McFarlane for getting this week's Golden Udder.

It's me again BI readers, Darryll 'YTC' Carter, with a brand new CoW: Cover of the Week. Typically I only talk about the cover bringing the Golden Udder home. But since I have been gone awhile; in honor of you all I will post three covers. And they are....

Detective Comics #13

This Detective Comics cover features the Caped Crusader himself and long time nuisance the Penguin. While the Penguin himself isn't particularly cause for alarm among us Batman readers, the actually layout of the cover is what caught my eye. It's just a nice classic compilation. The hero is in the foreground and the villain is leering over him. I presume that's Comissioner Gordon in the background accompanied by an ominous full moon and a small piece of the Gotham City skyline. It very effectively sets the tone, expertly standing by colors we associate with the night, mystery and the Dark Knight.

This first issue of Spaceknights is on the list because of the nostalgia it created. I picked up the issue, looked it over and realized it reminded me of G-Force/Gatchaman. The hero busts in the foreground and then their alternate selves soaring through space in the background. Its neat. I really dig the yellow and blue suit in the center. One thing i did notice though, is that the armor they're wearing below is not the same as armors soaring above. There's probably a plot explanation for that.

Last but certainly not least, in fact this is my favorite cover of week and the Golden Udder winner; Robyn Hood #1. I read the title of this book and saw the replaced the 'I' in Robin with a 'Y'. Then I saw that it was a Zenescope book and automatically concluded it would revolve around a female Robin Hood, which is bad-ass to say the least. There are three covers for this  book. Cover A by Eric Basadula is pretty awesome. I love the fairytale feel of the cover that the colors bring out. Cover B by Greg Horn features some great art. But it lacks color and the imposing stature that Cover A brings.




Cover C is by far the best of the three. The painted feel of the colors seems more of a match for a Robin Hood tale. The action pose is stereotypical of Robin Hood and with that comes a bad-ass factor. When you add in the flaming arrow, the hint of a burning blaze in the foreground and the arrow in her mouth; you come out with a winner. I'm picking this up.

COVER OF THE WEEK  Famous Funnies: A Carnival of Comics by Dell publishing. For the cover this week I figured we could also get a history lesson as well. Famous Funnies, 1933, is considered, by Historians, to be The First true American comic book! As stated by one historian, called it "the cornerstone for one of the most lucrative branches of magazine publishing". Now while not to get second looks by passerby, it still deserves its due. So I hereby award this week's Golden Udder to Famous Funnies: A Carnival of Comics.

   This cover is amazing. I have not read or even know anything about Alabaster: Wolves but I want to now. This cover is frightening and hauntingly stunning at the same time. This gets me interested in knowing more about the mini-series and the characters. The art makes it life like with an interesting tone of gore and beauty wrapped with a pretty bow. This cover makes me want to know more about this. That is why it gets the Golden Udder This Week.

Ah.... The return of JH Williams III to Batwoman's covers. As always Williams brings his trademark abstract and captivating art style to Kate's world. I find Williams work to be beautiful and magnificent. For everyone else? They at least make you say "wtf is going on here?", which is partly the point. Don't be surprised when Batwoman #12 is up here a few weeks for now. With Kate and Diana on a cover together... and Williams doing the cover? Yeah, they'll clutch the cup again.

Golden Udder Winner

       I have been waiting for this issue to come out so I could post it as cover of the week. Incidentally, it was almost beat out by the X-men Legacy cover featuring Frenzy. But the powerhouse and brick-house that she is, was not enough to stand up against a cover with; Bruce, Dick, Jason, Tim and Damian on the cover. Not to mention the cover is letting on that Tim and Damian's hate and more hate relationship may have been revived. As of post new 52 it seemed to have gone with the birds, or Robins in this case.

        I have been waiting to hand out this Golden Udder for about two or three weeks now. Wonder Woman #8 is here and in the words of my editor, “it is glorious!” What we have here is a rare sight. Wonder Woman using guns. They even have her doing an epic gunslinger dive. That is just awesome.  Kudos to the creative team for replacing the mythical bow and arrows of Eros (Cupid) with a modern look. I particularly like the heart shaped bullet flashes.

Hey there clashers. Ytc here with this week's CoW. I'll be the first to admit that I am DC biased. However, I am even more so coo coo for Batwoman. There are two things here that make this cover awesome. One; the illustration of Gotham's architecture is magnanimous. Secondly, the bright shade of red shared by Batwoman and the red cross of the hospital. It unites the two. It ties Kate to Bette, her cousin inside and it ties Batwoman to a sense of healing and salvation. A hero. And this week's winner of the Golden Udder.

Hell Yeah #2

The Golden Udder goes to Hell Yeah #2 this week. Despite the nice attractively average feminine bottom center stage, the cover as a whole captures the vibe of an indie/underground rock concert. The ambience and the inclusion of the roof frame and the stars beyond set the tone. You can even see the stars amidst the smoke and haze of the crowd. It almost has a FLCL sort of feel. (Google that If you don’t know what that is.) But what sold this for me was that awesome, sexy and extremely short cape. I’ve never seen anything like that before.

            This week the Golden Udder goes to Captain Atom #7.This is by far the best cover I’ve given this award to. I mean it speaks for itself. Just the sheer glow amidst the darkness vibe is bewitching. Not to mention the shattering Captain Atom and the cracking ground at the feet of his assailant. I really like how Atom is flaking off like dust in the wind. You can see shards of him blowing off into the abyss. Then there’s that aural smoke hazing off of the two characters that really gives them that otherworldly feel. This cover is magnificent.
