Film News: Justice League to shoot Next Year; Aiming for 2015 release

With yesterday's hearing between DC comics/WB pictures and the heirs of Superman co-creator, Joe Shuster finished...for now. It looks like WB's recent win has  benefited the studio by finally green-lighting the highly delayed "Justice League" film adaptation.



From the LA Times:

"Warner hopes to shoot the film next year and release it in the summer of 2015. The studio already has a "Justice League" script in the works. Next it needs to attach a director and then cast the lead roles."




This is the first actual piece of news on the J.L. adaptation since it's last take on the iconic team, "Justice League: Mortal" was cancelled in early 2008, due to the economy in Australia (we're it was to be shot at), the 2007 Writer's Guild of America strike and that both DC and Warner wanted the script to be perfect. Mortal was to be directed by Mad Max director, George Miller and there was already a cast picked for the scrapped film.

From various reports when the movie was still in development, the script done by Kieran and Michelle Mulroney took elements from Justice League arcs such as Mark Waid's "Tower of Babel", in which Batman creates a back-up plan to destroy the League, should that day ever come, and Geoff John's DC crossover event, "Infinite Crisis". Crisis started in October 2005 and ended in June 2007, and it featured the character Maxwell Lord. He was not only using Superman through mind-control to take out the League, but was also using the artificial intelligence "Brother Eye" to kill all the meta-humans on earth.

It's also shows in the cast that this scrapped film was inspired by the DCAU series, "Justice League/Justice League: Unlimited", created by Paul Dini and Bruce Timm. With the recent live-action film Green Lantern and the CGI cartoon series, "Green Lantern: the Animated Series", it's most likely to assume that Hal Jordan will once again be the emerald warrior.

In regards to Ryan Reynolds reprising his role is still unknown, but with recent reports saying that this and next year's Superman reboot, "Man of Steel" will kick-start a live-action DC comics universe, expect a re-casting in the near future.


The script-writer for the current adaptation is Will Beall, the writer of the upcoming film, "Gangster Squad". Recently in June, writer Mark Millar (Kick-Ass, Old Man Logan, The Secret Service) stated that he has heard about Beall's take on the iconic team, through a good friend of his. (take a HUGE grain of salt):


"A pal of mine is good friends with the new Justice League screenwriter and said his take on the team is incredible. Very real-world and not at all what you might expect. WB has a checkered history with their superhero characters. They're great with their boy wizards, but less consistent with their DC stable. But my chum said that this could be a thing of beauty and has been in the works for a little while now, not just an Avengers knock-off. Best of luck to them. The tidbits I heard sound quite dark and mature, which isn't what I expected. But word on Gangster Squad is great too, so I feel this is in really good hands."


At the moment, DC/WB's Justice League is slated to be released in Summer of 2015 and will be competing with Marvel Studios' "The Avengers 2"

Internet Goodness: Awesome animated 'Halloween' pitch

Earlier this year, it was "sorta" confirmed from various film blogs that Dimension Films/The Weinstein Company, the current holders of the Halloween IP, were gonna join forces with Michael Bay's production company, Platinum Dunes to reboot/re-imagine/revive the Halloween franchise.

Fast forward to late September, Federico D'Alessandro, head Storyboard Artist and Animatics Supervisor for most of Marvel Studios recent hits (Thor, Captain America: TFA, The Avengers, Iron Man 3 and Thor: The Dark World), contacted horror film site, Bloody-Disgusting with keyframes (like the one shown above this article) and a animatic video to pitch his idea on what a Halloween reboot should look, act and most of all FEEL.

Mr. D'Alessandro told B-D.com:

"As a lifelong 'Halloween' fan it would be a dream to direct a reboot of the franchise that's so near and dear to my heart," said D'Alessandro. "I created this animatic to show the tone and storytelling that I would bring to the project if I were lucky enough to have that chance." He continued: "It turned out pretty cool, but unfortunately while I was in the middle of working on it, talks fell through between Platinum Dunes and the Weinsteins…so I missed the boat on that one."

Sadly, as Mr. D'Alessandro pointed out in his statement, while both parties loved his take and direction for the franchise, the deal went south and so did the proposal for a PROPER Halloween retelling….for now.

While this deal went sour for some unexplained reason, I hope both parities try once more in the future and give Federico's vision of a Halloween reboot a shot. If not, I still would like to see him give it another try as a new property.

Halloween was directed by John Carpenter and was also written by him, and his ex-wife/producer, Debra Hill. It was released in theaters nationwide on October 25th, 1978 and it not only made Jamie Lee Curtis' career and dubbed her "The Original Scream Queen", but also gave birth to the Horror sub-genre know as the "slasher" genre.


Though their won't possibly be a new installment in the beloved franchise for the foreseeable future (look up on google "Halloween 3D" and you'll see what I mean), the 1978 classic will be re-released in theaters nationwide on October 25th, in celebration of it 34th anniversary.

Film News: [Spoiler] to star as main villian in both Guardians of the Galaxy and Avengers 2

Originally from Cosmic Book News, one of it's readers attended the Montreal Comic-Con chatted with a certain comic character creator.....

Armand Rock, the reader from Cosmic Book News chatted with Jim Starlin, the creator of Thanos.

"Armand Rock attended the recent Montreal Comic-Con and spoke with Jim Starlin who said that the deal is already in place. Jim Starlin even mentioned that Thanos will appear in the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy movie in 2014 and The Avengers 2 in 2015.The news is not that surprising, as most assumed Thanos would go on to become the Avengers major villain in The Avengers 2, but what it may reveal is that there might be another villain in the Guardians of the Galaxy movie."

Thanos' bio:

"Thanos was created by Jim Starlin and was first introduced in issue #55 of Iron Man (Feb. 1973). Thanos is member of a mutant race known as the Titanian Eternals. He possesses abilities common to the Eternals, but heightened through a combination of his racial heritage, bionic amplification, mysticism, and the entity Death. The character of Thanos is nearly invulnerable to any attacks, thanks to his superhuman strength, stamina and durability."

Film News: James Gunn officially on board to write/direct Marvel's "Guardians" movie

While it's been rumored and heavy hinted at, it's now official that James Gunn is on board to direct and write the upcoming 2014 Marvel Studios film "Guardians of the Galaxy". It's based of the long-running comic by Marvel Comics.

James Gunn made it official through his Facebook, stating the following:

"For a month or so there’s been a lot of Internet speculation about my involvement with Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy. Until now I haven’t said anything, because I’m trying to be less expulsive about this project than I am about the rest of my life. But last night I got the go-ahead from Kevin Feige to let you all know that, yes, indeed, I am rewriting and directing Guardians of the Galaxy. As a lifelong lover of Marvel comics, space epics, AND raccoons, this is the movie I’ve been waiting to make since I was nine years old. Kevin, Joss, and all the folks at Marvel have been amazing collaborators so far, and we’re committed to bringing you something majestic, beautiful, and unique. I am incredibly excited. I am also incredibly grateful to the fans and the press for all their words of encouragement and support regarding my involvement with this project since the news first leaked. Thanks – you have, honestly, touched and overwhelmed me. And that’s it for now. Other than the occasional photos of my dog and cat here on Facebook, I’ll talk to you again in August 2014 when Guardians is released!"

James Gunn is mostly known for directing and writing the 2010 "realistic" superhero film, "Super" featuring Rainn Wilson, Ellen Page and Kevin Bacon. (We can now officially put the X-Men film series in the "6 degrees of Kevin Beacon" game?... AWESOME!) The other movie he mostly know for writing and directing as well, is the highly underrated 2006 Horror/Comedy film, "Slither" which featured fellow "Whedonite" Nathan Fillon, Elizabeth Banks and Michael Rooker of AMC's "The Walking Dead" fame.

Guardians of the Galaxy is a Marvel Comics property that originally started in January 1969 with issue #18 of Marvel Super-Heroes. The creators of the team were Arnold Drake (Doom Patrol, Deadman) and Gene Colan. (Daredevil, The Tomb of Dracula, Blade)



While the original origin of the team was VASTLY different, the 2008 run (the one that the upcoming film will be based on) starts after the event, Annihilation: Conquest, which started in August 2007 and ended in January of the following year. (written by the 2008 team of the "Guardians" comic, Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning) Star-Lord decides to form a team of interstellar heroes that will be proactive in protecting the galaxy, rather than reacting to crises as they happen. He recruits Adam Warlock, Drax the Destroyer, Gamora, Phyla-Vell (the current Quasar), Rocket Raccoon and Groot, with Mantis as support.

Comics on the Screen: THOR (2011)

THOR (2011) Review by Jeff Williams

For today's review for Comic Book Clash's "Avengers Month", I'm taking a look at a movie that (before The Avengers was released) was my favorite from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. That film is the 2011 Fantasy/Sci-Fi Epic, Thor.

Based off the comic of the same name created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, 2011's Thor was written by Ashley Edward Miller, Zack Stentz and Don Payne with story credits going to J. Michael Straczynski and Mark Protosevich, and the director of the film was Kenneth Branagh.

The film starts off with a short montage showing both Thor and Loki's Origins, from their childhoods to adulthood, we come to see that even though their not related, they do act brotherly to one another.  We then cut to Thor, now as a adult (played by Chris Hemsworth) preparing to ascend to the throne of Asgard, until a group of frost giants try to retrieve the casket from Odin's vault which contains the Tesseract (the cosmic cube int this universe). and they failed. Thor wants to confront Laufery and the frost giants abbot this incident on their realm, Jotunheim. Odin forbids this, but that doesn't faze Thor, Loki, Sif nor the Warriors Three (Volstagg, Fandral and Hogun).

They proceed to the realm where the frost giants live, and due to a remake that Laufery utters, a fight insures. As this fight progresses on, it looks like they were  at death's door until Odin intervenes and tries to play peacekeeper between the two races, however due to the god of thunder's arrogance that treaty between the two races was broken. Due to that arrogance, Odin strips his son's godly powers from him and banishes him to Midgard (our realm in the Marvel universe) to learn of Humility.

This films cast (excluding a couple due to some changes) was one that felt like it was literally taken out of the source material. Hemsworth's portrayal of the god of thunder was perfect, from the start of the film he was naive but as the film progressed you felt that he's matured due to his interaction with the humans on earth.

Tom Hiddleston as Loki was one of THE best portrayal on a comic film to date. He's a villain down to a T, but he's a simpifectic one and understand why as the films plot progresses, you understand his character and why he's takes these courses of action.

Not only does Sir. Anthony Hopkins' Odin brings some class to the film, but he's a King at not only thinks of Asgard's best intentions but for his son(s) as well.

The others that portray their respective roles (Stellan Skarsgard, Idris Elba, Colm Feore, Ray Stevenson, Tadanobu Asano, Joshua Dallas, Jaimie Alexander and Rene Russo) are great additions to the film. However, the one I personally fell that was highly miscast as Jane Foster was Natalie Portman and Kat Dennings as Darcy Lewis.

While Dennings was their for harmless padding in the comedic tense, I personally felt that while Natalie Portman as Jane Foster is the generic love interest in mainstream comics. Portman's portrayal comes off as both whiney, shallow and pedantic. Another reason why I disliked Ms. Portman's portrayal was the exhale in the character's background from her being originally a paramedic to an astrophysicist. I understand and acknowledge why they changed the character's backing to mesh with the films plot, but to a long-term Marvel zombie it may feel weird.

The score, done by Patrick Doyle was amazing. The tone and ominous flows wonderfully with the movie's fantasy element and with the contemporary earth setting. Even listening to it solely  is an experience of its own.

The director of Thor, Kenneth Branagh was one of Marvel's best choices they made due to his Shakespearian background. He really brought out the feeling for both respective realms and also makes both Asgard and Jotunheim look awe-inspiring.

In closing, though The Avengers is now my personal favorites in the Cinematic Universe. Thor is still a close favorite of mine. From the plot, to the characterization of each actor/actress in this film is a mush see!

It was really, really, really, good. Natilie Portman's hot, Thor's Cool and some Frost Giants die. EPIC! I highly reccomend this film to anyone.

COMICS ON SCREEN: IRON MAN 2 REVIEW

Iron Man 2 (2010) Review by Jeff Williams

With this month being Avengers month, todays review is on a sequel that feels more of a reminder of what's the shape of things to come, rather than a continuation of the original's plot. Distributed by Marvel Studios and Paramount Pictures, it's the 2010 film, Iron Man 2.

I personally feel conflicted when it comes to this particular sequel. While the director of 2008's Iron Man, Jon Favreau returns to helm the sequel and the cast from Iron Man return to their respective roles (excluding Terrance Howard as Lt. Rhodes and Jeff Bridges as Obadiah Stane not returning because of Howard's salary and Stane perishing at the end of Iron Man.) for the sequel.

The new additions to the cast, Mickey Rourke as Ivan Vanko "Whiplash" and Scarlett Johansson as Natasha Romanoff "Black Widow" are great additions to this already perfect cast. As mentioned earlier, due to Mr. Howard not reprising his role as Rhodey. His replacement is Don Cheadle. Cheadle is known from the Acadamy-award winning 2004 film "Hotel Rwanda".  From a personal view, I prefer Cheadle's portrayal as the character than I did with Howard's take on Rhodey.

The main problem that I have with this movie is, there's a good story in there but it wasn't fully developed. I like the idea of Stark slowly dying from his own creation and that showing his mortality, the different view points of Stark and Rhodes when it comes to the Iron Man suits and their use in the world, a villain that's sympathetic and understudying his actions and expanding the universe with the inclusion of Nick Fury and the Live-Action debut of Black Widow.

That main problem I mentioned earlier in this review starts to rear its ugly head. While I do like that they started to expand and connect this universe more, its the BIGGEST problem with this film. I feel that they [Marvel/Paramount] wanted to use this more as a visual marketing tool (i.e. "Watch Out WB! The Avengers Cometh!) than using it to expand the character of Tony/Iron Man, his conflicts and his relationships with the already existing characters, and that in turn hurt the character of Black Widow and her portrayal from Ms. Johansson.

If their is one thing that I've got to commend Favreau's directing in this, compared to the first film is that the fight scenes feel more fluid. While he did a great job with bring the character/world of Iron Man to the big screen, the fight scenes in Iron Man felt out of place and it somewhat shows in that film's third act.

In closing, while this sequel ins't on the same level as the first film. It's still an enjoyable time to have with friends.

I would like to add, that while I did enjoy Sam Rockwell's performance as Justin Hammer; the characterization of Hammer was played over the top as joke rather then how he's portrayed in the comics, a rival to Stark and Stark Industries.

Also, I do acknowledge that the story itself was adapted from the "Armor Wars" arc from the comic, but if that was the route they wanted to take with this film they should have stuck with it.

NEWS EDITION # 34 - AVENGERS MOVIE BREAKS RECORDS, THE END OF SWEETTOOTH

AVENGERS ... BREAKS MOVIE RECORDS!

       Okay. Months and months and even years of speculation came to an end on May 4th as the Avengers finally hit theaters. And by Primus, civilization lost its collective minds in fanboy & fangirl Nirvana in ways we haven't seen since The Dark Knight. Scratch that, it SURPASSED IT! I am not kidding.

     In less than 24 hours of it's release here in the United States, about 1:00pm on Friday afternoon, myself and CBC staff writer Jeremias de Leon noticed that the movie had already made 18.7 MILLION dollars on its opening night. That is just from possibly 2, maybe 3 screens in the movie in the states cause most theaters had a midnight showing.

   Over the course of the weekend, it had topped Dark Knight's opening weekend with a solid $226.4 million in North America over the weekend. Just this past Monday, the movie made another $18.9 million. THIS IS ON A MONDAY!!! When most people are still in school or work. Internationally, the movie had made 475.8 million during the weekend and overall since the movie opened internationally till now has made over $702.2 million dollars in less than 13 days. It has been confirmed that Avengers now holds the record of the biggest opening weekend of ALL TIME; surpassing Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 to become the third highest grossing move of all time. What I would love to see is the movie become the highest grossing movie of all time, beating out James Cameron's Avatar by making more than 2.7 billion dollars. Will this happen ... time will tell but it is pretty adamant that people LOVE this movie. We'll be keeping a closer eye on this as time moves on.

LEMIRE NO LONGER CRAVES SWEET TOOTH

     After the last few years of readers being on the edge of their seats with the cult hit Sweet Tooth, writer Jeff Lemire has decided that it's time for the book to come to a conclusion. Jeff explains on the Vertigo Blog the whys to the ending of the series and why not to blame DC:


"The decision to end it at #40 is entirely my choice," Lemire said via the Vertigo blog. "Truth is, I always knew what the ending of 'Sweet Tooth' would be.  It was one of the first ideas I came up with when writing the pitch for the book. The beginning and the end of this story were always pretty much written in stone, it was the middle bit that was fluid, and grew and changed as I went along. So, for me it’s incredibly gratifying to finally get to the end of the journey with Gus and Jepperd. Everything I’ve done with the series so far, everything I’ve built month after month, has all been about this, the final story."


    The final arc in Sweet Tooth, "Wild Kingdom" begins with issue #36 and the double-sized final issue, #40 will be released by Lemire and longtime artist Jose Villarrubia this December.

SISTERS BOUND IN BLOOD IN CARBON GREY SEQUEL

"Daughters of Stone" hits stores in June

The dieselpunk world of Hoang Nguyen's CARBON GREY first dazzled comic book readers with its beautiful painted art, intrigue-fueled action, and compelling heroines in August 2011 with the "Sisters at War" story arc. Now, Nguyen has assembled his creative team once more to continue the story of the Sisters Grey with the publication of CARBON GREY VOLUME TWO: DAUGHTERS OF STONE #1 in June.

At the close of volume one, the sisters' relationship was torn apart by the murder of the Kaiser of Mitteleuropa, the man whom they were sworn to protect. Now, with Eva and Giselle in exile and the vicious Anna on the hunt for conspirators, the fourth Grey, Mathilde, is on a quest to discover the truth about the source of her family's power.

A Kickstarter campaign to fund the production of the new volume of CARBON GREY reached its funding goal on April 14. Nguyen explained that both the intensity of the artistic process, with each page meticulously hand-painted, and the depth of research behind the creation of CARBON GREY necessitated the campaign.

"A lot of research goes into every page, whether it's a costume designs or different settings," said Nguyen. "I want to make sure that it's believable. My inspirations comes from looking at fashion, photography, architecture, industrial and set design. I like to go beyond the norm and bring something new and different to my drawings."

CARBON GREY VOLUME TWO: DAUGHTERS OF STONE is a three-issue monthly mini series, co-written by Nguyen, Paul Gardner, and Khari Evans, with art by Nguyen, Evans, and Kinsun Loh. The first issue (APR120424) is available for pre-order in the April issue of Previews and will be in stores on June 6.

The three issues of CARBON GREY VOLUME ONE have sold out, but a trade paperback (ISBN 978-1-60706-448-0) is available. A two-issue mini-series CARBON GREY: ORIGINS, about the childhoods of the Sisters Grey and their family history, wrapped up in March 2012.         Hey there Clashers, YTC here with another daily review. This time around, it is the motion comic from Marvel Studios, Thor & Loki: Blood Brothers. The morning after St. Patty’s we here at CBC woke up from a night of drinking and festivities to eat a well needed heap of Chinese food. But we had no film to watch with our feast. After flipping through Netflix for a spell we came across TL:BB. The four issue motion comic was sure to be an awesome spectacle of Thor’s might and thunder cast down upon the treacherous, trickster, Loki. Right?

Wrong. TL:BB was anything, but that. The series played out solely from the point of view of the trickster god himself and painted him in a sympathetic light. This work of art and great writing managed to turn three hardened comic book geeks, against the hero, against Thor. The story paved a tale of Loki’s neglect as a child; the hours of bullying at the hands of Thor and his friends, a stepmother who treated him like second rate trash and a kingdom that would not let him transcend beyond the roots of his blood. All of these created the perfect storm to turn Loki into the villain that he was.

The best part about the story is that, Loki realizes this. He is surprisingly self reflective. The whole series he goes back and forth, over and over his emotions and thoughts in his head; hoping to make some rational sense of what seems to be his fate and destiny. Sadly despite all the great build up and the finely crafted story. Loki fails to rectify the plan he has already set in motion and the series is on an ungratifying and unfortunate end. The only fail of this series is the end. You know, a lot like Mass Effect 3.
