Comic News: Marvel Gets Even More Superior in July

   With the waves of fans who are enjoying Superior Spiderman after the venomous hate that was the initial reaction to the events of Amazing Spider-man # 700, get ready for more as Marvel will be release 3 new books that revolve around the actions of Superior Spiderman.

 First up, we get the Superior Foes of Spider-man, which will be written by Nick Spencer with art by Steve Lieber. Superior Foes of Spider-man will focus on the latest incarnation of the Sinister Six, which is being lead by Boomerang (ft a new Beetle, Shocker, Overdrive & Speed Demon) and were introduced in Superior Spider-man # 1.

  Nick Spencer commented about the book on Marvel.com:

This is a book about the working class guys; these are not the Kingpins or Green Goblins or Doc Ocks of the world. These are the small-time crooks looking for a quick score so they can pay their alimony and get the loan shark off their back. A lot of the book is from Boomerang's perspective, and he's very much aware of that—and he sees this new Sinister Six he's formed as one last big shot at real money and real power. He's got a lot riding on this. . . . they certainly feel like they're moving up in the world, since the name Sinister Six carries with it a certain weight. But really, that's a bit of marketing hype; I mean, what stops any group of six—or in this case, five—super-crooks from taking up a title like that? They'll run into reality pretty quick. For hired guns like these, the really dangerous part of the equation is on the criminal side: getting on the wrong side of a boss, or being double-crossed by your partner. Losing a fight with Spider-Man is getting off light by comparison there.

 The book will be an ongoing and it is slated to start  this July.


Next Up, we get Superior Carnage, which will be written by Kevin Shinick with art by Stephen Segovia has Cletus Cassidy, who is imprisoned and catatonic, being used and harnessed for evil along side his symbiote, much like what the government did to Venom, yet for evil. And the mastermind of this murderous idea is none other than the Wizard. The 5 issue miniseries starts this July.


And then things get even more epic with Superior Spider-man Team Up # 1. Chris Yost is joined by artist Marco Checchetto as they transform Avenging Spider-man into Superior Spider-man Team Up. After the "mind blowing, status quo" as Yost promises to expand Superior Spider-man operations.

Yost to said to CBR: . . .

with "Superior Spider-Man Team Up," that just gets bigger. I think in issue #1, he teams up with pretty much the entire Marvel Universe.
So you're going to continue to see how Spidey ---who up until now has been an incredibly arrogant a-hole --continues to deal with the rest off the Marvel after what has happened to his reputation in the first few issues of Superior.
Spidey-Ock's been acting, in his own special way, heroically. To me, the joy of writing Avenging has been seeing how the other people react to him and also how Doc views these people. He's always looking down his nose at the others -- even guys like Thor and Hulk -- because in the end he really, truly believes in his heart that he is better than all of them.

With the relaunch, as you'll be seeing in the months to come starting in Superior #9, Spidey’s gone through some changes, and will expand his operations. He's going to be the best Spider-Man that's ever been, and he's going to take it to the next level. "Superior Spider-Man Team Up" reflects that. You're going to get bigger stories. Like I said, in the first issue he teams up with the Marvel Universe, and you'll see him interacting in a much bigger way with everybody.


Again,  Superior Spider-man Team Up  #1 will start this July.


And finally, Dan Slott promises an even bigger status quo change for Superior Spider-man in both issues # 9 & Issue # 14 where in 14, he gets a new alias and new costume.

It all happens this July.

NYCC Comic News: Spencer & Ross Reveal the Secrets of Avengers

 Marvel NOW continues its aggressive relaunch of titles, with either new jumping on points with new creative teams and/or directions. relaunches of titles or brand new titles, such as the recently announced Superior Spiderman.

  Another Marvel title that is getting relaunched is the Secret Avengers. Taking ideas from the Secret War, SHIELD is using memory re-writing tech in order to have its own group of Avengers. Thing is ... most of the roster doesn't even know they are on that team.

  The new Secret Avengers group will be SHIELD sanctioned and will include Nick Fury Jr, Hawkeye, Black Widow, Mockingbird, Taskmaster, Hulk and a brand new Iron Patriot whose identity has not been revealed. Bringing us this new team is writer Nick Spencer and artist Luke Ross.

  Spencer had this to say to Entertainment Weekly:

"Nobody on this team actually knows that they're on this team. "S.H.I.E.L.D. has decided that they want their own Avengers team, but Avengers are loose cannons: They're independent operators, they don’t have security clearance, they have a history of becoming bad guys."

 "I can’t reveal the identity of the Iron Patriot yet, but I think people are gonna like how he ends up in that suit," said Spencer. "That’s a suit that has a lot of history in the Marvel Universe, none of it good."

 Spencer wrote a few issues of the current run back last year  Fear Itself tie ins. No release date has been revealed yet.

NEWS EDITION # 35 - THE END OF THE JLI, THIEF STEALS MORE PRINTINGS & THE FIRST X-MEN?!

JUSTICE LEAGUE INTERNATIONAL .. . CANCELLED!!!

    Early this week, it was announced that DC will be cutting another title. And while many had speculated that it would be either Resurrection Man, Voodoo or Captain Atom that would get the axe ... surprisingly, Justice League International will be the latest DC series meeting its end.

    The series has been a rollercoaster as they just formed in issue # 1 only to lose half it roster after bomb at the end of issue 6. Vixen, Ice and Fire were all critically injured while Batman has taken himself off the main roster only for Batwing and OMAC to help. Yet, even worse, the bomb ended up killing Rocket Red. While there has not been a reason as to why the book is being cancelled as of issue #12 and annual # 1, many speculate that JLI is ending due to poor sales.

  The current storyline will end the series with its climax in JLI annual # 1. Although, there is still speculation of news that it will have a Zero issue during the month of September, which serves as the company's second Zero Month in DC's existence.

   The final issue of JLI by Dan Jurgens and Aaron Lopresti will hit selves this August.


FIRST X-MEN ARE COMING

   As announced this past Monday, the reveal behind the First X-Men teasers from last week have come. Writer Christos Gage and legendary artist Neal Adam, who drew the X-Men back in the 60s and 70s,  will be doing a miniseries called First X-Men.

   The premise behind the series. Neal Adams revealed in CBR:

"Something must have happened before Professor X became Professor X," Adams said. "He could pass. He didn't look like a strange X-Man. He didn't look like a mutant. Maybe this was going on when Professor X was a teenager and mutants were being abused by the government … and somebody stepped out to protect these kids. … Who would he be and why would he go to Charles Xavier? … That became my premise."

Gage adds from an interview with CBR:

"Basically it takes place before the original X-Men and it's a time when mutants are coming [out in the country]," said Gage. "In this context, Wolverine is noticing this going on and says, 'Someone needs to protect these people.'" 


  The First X-Men cast is mixed as it has Wolverine,  a merc for hire Sabertooth, a Nazi killing Magneto and some new characters. The series, as promised by X-book Editor Nick Lowe, this book will reveal WHY people hate and fear mutants as well as lead to some questions. The 5 issue miniseries written by Christos Gage with art by Neal Adams will kick off this August.


THIEF OF THIEVES #1 GETS 4TH PRINTING

It is available in comic book stores and digitally from multiple platforms. AMC has optioned the title as a series with Kirkman and Chic Eglee (Dexter) serving as Creators/Executive Producers/Writers.

 YTC is here again folks, bringing you an all new CoW, Cover of the Week. This week is Thief of Thieves #4 and I have to say I really like the work on this cover.
I presently am working on the cover for my own comic book and really admire the title logo they use for this series. It is simple but gets the job done fashionably. It's really quite nifty and clever. Implementing the old phrase "caught red handed". Though I see on some of the other covers the color shifts depending on the illustration colors. This guy always seems to be caught in a silhouette and I love the mystery of that. His back is turned to us with the red and blue shining light of the police behind. The way the light shines off the ground is surreal. You can even see the cobblestones in the road. While the red panel at the bottom is interesting I think I would like the cover more without it there.

THIS WEEK IN AWESOME # 1

Now, every week, our CBC staff will give you their thoughts on what we read was awesome this past week. These books do not necessarily have to have come out this week but something we read this past week. So here we go.

My awesome moment of the week is a bit of a spoiler.  It happened at the end of Ultimate X-Men in a flashback, Rogue remembers her prayers being answered by none other than Professor Charles Xavier. I think this is an awesome moment because one Professor X has been presumed dead since Ultimatum and to Rogue replaced him in her explanations with God to me that says that she holds this man in high regard.




From Darryl Carter:


For me my epic moment was really for last week, but what the hey. I actually don't think epic is the word... but the moment is definitely Kate Kane (Batwoman) getting her hedges clipped by Det. Maggie Sawyer.
But that's not all, no, no, no... Kate is feeling ecstasy while her younger cousin, Bette (Flamebird), is getting her guts pulled out on the cold, snow white Gotham streets... That was ridiculous and messed up. It made
me laugh and yet... at the same time, it unsettled me.





From EIC Frankie Rodriguez:

 My moment of awesome is coming from none other than IDW's Transformers: More Than Meets the Eye # 1. Prowl and Bumblebee have been having issues with Rodimus leaving with a bunch of Autobots to find the mythical Knights of Cybertron. Bumblebee doesn't take it well, especially when Rachet reveals that he'll go with him after an Autobot dies from transforming too much. (No. Not the awesome moment.) It is the fact that after Prowl is stunned by Chromedome deciding to leave, Prowl takes matters into his own hands. As the ship with Rodimus and the Autobots who decided to go with him launch, just as it goes to hyperspace, it blows up. Prowl . ..  Mr. Straight Edge Autobot himself . . . planted a bomb to keep Autobots from leaving because he doesn't believe in Rodimus's quest for the Knights of Cybertron. Yet, unlike Prowl's plan, the Ship blows up after it has gone to warp. So, Prowl is now responsible for a possible 40 Autobots dying or being lost in space. Yay. Way to go Prowl!

MARVEL AXES VON DOOM MINI, ALPHA FLIGHT & MORE!

    Marvel seems to be going through a lot of changes of lately. Whether it is because of Disney wanting to have a bigger hand in the company or their recent falling to become the #2 comic book company for 2 months in a row with the success of DC Comic's Relaunch (more on that later), Marvel is starting to look alike revolving door. One of the most significant cancellations is the axe being brought down on the 4 issue miniseries Victor Von Doom, which was supposed to be written by scribe Nick Spencer (of Morning Glories) and Demo artist Becky Cloonan. The 4 issue mini was to tell of a teenage doom and his trip to Hell to reclaim his mother's soul and was to be released in two weeks. Yet, Marvel had cancelled the project.

Nick Spencer's tweet on it Friday Morning:

Trust me, no one is more bummed about this than I am.


  And Victor Von Doom are not the only casualties. All Winners Squad and Iron Man 2.0 (which is also written by Nick Spencer) are also getting cancelled. Yet, the other big surprise was our recent story on Alpha Flight's status. Originally, it had go from a miniseries into an ongoing series a few months ago. Yet, due to sales on the book dropping significantly, Alpha Flight is returning to its miniseries status, ending in issue #8 as it originally intended.

  And just announced Monday morning by Alpha Flight co-writer Fred Van Lente on his Twitter, his upcoming 5 issue miniseries, Destroyers, has been cancelled by Marvel as well. Destroyers was to feature a story with She-Hulk, Beast, A-Bomb, Devil Dinosaur and more with art by Kyle Holtz.

Van Lente replied on his Twitter to one of his followers with this:

There was no announcement. The book hadn’t been solicited yet, and just wouldn’t have. … The biggest bummer about Destroyers was Kyle Hotz had #1-2 pencilled, and it looked grrrrreat. Ah, well. That’s showbiz for you.

All these in top of a recent lay off of 15 people being stated as a cost-cutting, not performance measure.

CBC will be keeping an eye on any other developments with the changes with Marvel.


DC TOPS SALES FOR 2ND MONTH IN A ROW

   When DC first broke news of the relaunch, there were many fans who immediately jumped at the company. And creators from other company's were either curious or down right criticized  DC on the decision to relaunch the books. It is now November. According to Comichron, orders for October were up by 2.67% on DC books from September. Yes. You read that correctly. Orders went UP for books from September to October. And while early reports that sales have gone down for DC, overall comics unit sales were positive this year, unlike the last several years where decline was more than evident. In September, DC Comics had 19 out of the Top 25 Selling titles. DC once again continues that feat but it's a bit different.

In September, Batman #1 lead DC as the champion of Sales that month. Yet, last month, Justice League #2 had sales, according to Diamond Distribution.

Notice that while there has been shuffling, Justice League Dark was the only book to drop down; only to be replaced by the flagship title Justice League with its second issue. And Don't worry too much about Justice League Dark as it dropped to 30. If you expanded  this to the Top 50 books of each month, DC still dominates with more titles in the Top 50 than Marvel.

 With the increased visibility of comics, better access to them with digital same day capability, it seems that DC has succeed in their relaunch and working hard to keep their sales up. Let's see how Marvel, Image and other companies respond to this while DC continues their climb upward.
