Comic Review: Thunderbolts #1
THUNDERBOLTS #1
Written by Daniel Way
Art by Steve Dillon & Guru eFX
Marvel Comics
FLIPPING THROUGH:
This is a brand new beginning. These are NOT the Thunderbolts of old. If you want to see any of them, read Dark Avengers. This is a whole new team with a different purpose. And we see this team being formed. Each member of the group is getting a very ... personal invite from Thaddeus Ross aka Red Hulk. As the team is slowly being formed, we get a glimpse into the purpose behind Ross's new Thunderbolts group. Um ... A LOT of people get killed in this first issue.
Wow. Way and Dillon seem to be off to a bloody start.
ART:
Dillon has been around for quite some time now. He's drawn Frank, the Punisher, before. He's also done stuff like Preacher. This definitely seems to be up his alley. We have an in-continuity book for Punisher to really explore the Marvel Universe. And Dillon is definitely exploring the darker corners of the Marvel U.
Dillon's style is somewhat unique. Yet, it works well as we see Deadpool, Elektra, Venom and more looking distinct. Emotions are easy and the backgrounds were various and colorful. Guru eFX does a great job of showing off Dillon's pencils and inks. Although with the scenes with Ross and Punisher, I felt that they may have been colored a bit more brightly. Otherwise, solid job by Dillon and Guru eFX.
WRITING:
Way does a good job on seeing how Ross personally recruits his team and the whys. He also delves into the impact the Punisher has had on the rest of the Marvel U; which is definitely an interesting speech. Ross goes about his recruitment face to face but each of them while they are killing a lot of people ... save for Frank. Ross uses his recruitment of Frank to help push along the issue and it is done well. Ross's unique way to bring the Punisher onto the team was very smart and true to both characters.
While the other members did not seem to be recruited in such a grandiose fashion ... it felt real enough. Ross and Punisher's interplay in the book will be the most interesting from the way things look from this first issue. My gripes are because of the recruitment being quick ... we did not see much of the rest of the team while having an overall focus on Punisher. It makes sense but still. Plus, the issue felt breezy. This was too much Punisher & Ross, not enough Thunderbolts
OVERALL IMPRESSION:
Thunderbolts #1 was a good opening issue for the new series. It establishes how the team gets together. It establishes the motivation behind the team and helps display that this team's purpose will be killing who Ross deems has "bad guys."
The art is good and the pacing was okay. After consideration, there was entirely too much Punisher & Ross and not enough Team. The story telling technique was okay but over all. It could have been stronger if the issue was perhaps double sized. This is a team book ... but it felt like the Ross/Castle show more than anything.
I give Thunderbolts #1 ... a 3 out of 5. Get ready to feel the pain.

NYCC: Peter Parket NOT Spider-Man in upcoming re-launch; MJ and Spidey back?
Even though I'm interested in the recently announced Marvel NOW relaunch, The Superior Spider-Man, that doesn't mean I'm questioning some decisions that the comic giant has made with this, like today's news article for example......
According to Newsarama, during a retailer breakfast that was held, this thursday, writer Dan Slott said a few more details with the comic.
Courtesy of the site:
"Dan Slott teased a few more Superior Spider-Man details during a retailer breakfast held at the start of New York Comic Con. Marvel Comics has confirmed that Slott told retailers in attendance that the Spider-Man starring in the January-debuting series is indeed a character other than Peter Parker, and that Spider-Man and Mary Jane would be getting back together — which would mean that Peter and MJ will not be."

Though this was reported by many others comic sites, one actually revealed that this new Spider-Man will have retractable claws.
What will happen to Pete in #700 that has him no longer being "the amazing wall-crawler"? Does he die? Does he once again retire? Is Marvel gonna go extremely drastic and make Pete a villain? More Importantly... who's this new Spider-Man?
Flash Thompson? (currently "Venom"... go read it now)
Kaine? ("The Scarlet Spider".... another Marvel book I recommend)
or if this would be tied in to the ending of this year's event book, Spider-Men....
"WARNING!: If no one has read Spider-Men #5, do read any further and thanks for reading this article."
Miles Morales (616/Mainstream U): Like it's shown in the final panel of Spider-Men. After peter does a "goggle" search on the character, it's possible by his reaction that there is a version of Miles in Peter's universe. It's also possible by judging from his reaction, that they're maybe a connection/Peter knows this "Miles" in his universe.
Whatever happens to Pete and whomever this new wall-crawler is, we won't know until the final issue of Amazing Spider-Man, which is still slated to release on both newsstands & digital download, December 25th. The debut of the relaunch with the new spidey, "The Superior Spider-Man", will be available on newsstands & digital download the following day, December 26th.

Comic News: Marvel NOW update
A lot has happened in the course of the last two months and more and more news spilled out of Marvel about the titles that will be a part of Marvel Now. The relaunch of Marvel is shaping up to have some interesting choices for Marvel. While we already confirmed a slew of new # 1s from Marvel Now that include the following:
Uncanny Avengers by Rick Remender & John Cassidy
All New X-Men by Brian Michael Bendis & Stuart Immonen
Thor: The God of Thunder by Jason Aaron & Esad Ribic
Indestructible Hulk by Mark Waid & Leinil Yu
Avengers by Jonathan Hickman & Jerome Opena
New Avengers by Jonathan Hickman & Steve Epting
Captain America by Rick Remender & John Romita Jr
Deadpool by Gerry Duggan, Brian Poshen & Tony Moore
Iron Man by Kieron Gillen & Greg Land
Fantastic Four by Matt Fraction & Mark Bagley
FF by Matt Fraction & Mike Allred
Since then, there have been new titles and other titles with new directions. So, let's go into all the new stuff.
First, we have confirmation of the new New Avengers line up: Iron Man, Black Bolt, Mr. Fantastic & Black Panther. So, we say goodbye to the Luke Cage New Avengers team.
Next up, Journey Into Mystery will shift over from Kid Loki being the star to Lady Sif herself. Writer Kathryn Immonen takes over the title to give us a very different and ... violent Sif.
Another title that is changing it's star is Hulk. Hulk will become Red She Hulk as of this November. Betty Banner will take charge as she takes on the mission of taking down any super powered being with writer Jeff Parker.
Then there are some majorily different titles coming in. The first is Avengers Arena. A bunch of younger, teen characters with ties to the Avengers are all stuck in Arcade's Murderworld and have to do their best to survive it ... and possibly kill each other in the process. X-23, Reptyl, Darkhawk, Nico of the Runaways and more are apart of this brand new ongoing. And yes ... Battle Royale and Hunger Games inspired title. Yah ... Marvel killing lots of teens.Avengers Arena is written by Dennis Hopeless and art by Kev Walker.
Next up, Cable and X-Force has a second X-Force team coming together. Cable gathers Domino, Colossus, Forge & Dr. Nemesis together but are immediately outlaws in the eyes of the Uncanny Avengers. Find out what Dennis Hopeless and Salvador Larocca have in store for this team.
Finally, the other big title that is starting from Marvel Now is a brand new Thunderbolts title. Not to be confused with Jeff Walker's Dark Avengers book. Daniel Way pens a brand new Thunderbolts book with artist Steve Dillon. The book features a brand new line up of Elektra, Deadpool, Venom, Punisher and lead by Red Hulk. This team is put together by Ross (Red Hulk) himself to take down enemies he deems fit to take down. Thunderbolts, like Cable and X-Force will debut this December.
This new relaunch is shaping up to being distinctly different from DC's new 52.

NEWS EDITION #32 - SPIDER MEN INVASION, KHAN'S LIFE STORY, WAID GETS INSUFFERABLE & GAMBIT'S SEXY BACK!
Welcome to the News Edition for the week of April 18th, 2012. And we got lots of news from C2E2 and beyond. So let's break it down.
The biggest news as far as I’m concerned has to be that of ‘Spider-men’. The first crossover of Earth 616 and the ‘Ultimate’ universe bringing together Miles Morales and the Peter Parker of Earth 616 for a 5 part crossover.
GENGHIS KHAN'S STORY HITS COMICS
Official IDW Press Release
This July, IDW Publishing will bring you Secret Battles of Genghis Khan, the story of how a boy named Temujin became the founder and Great Khan of the Mongol Empire. Adapting Khan’s engrossing life to graphic-novel form are writer Daryl Gregory, award-winning novelist of The Devil’s Alphabet and Pandemonium, and artists Alan Robinson (Weekly World News, Phoenix Without Ashes) and Jay Fotos (Locke & Key). The all-new, 104-page graphic novel will also feature a special painted cover by Sam Shearon as well as back-up material detailing Khan’s life and battles.
To this day, Khan is known as one of the greatest leaders by conquering lands one military victory after another. By the end of his life, the Mongol Empire occupied a large percentage of Central Asia and China. Although famous for being heartless, Khan was a man that was both brutal and fair. He was cruel to his enemies, but even-handed to those that were loyal, no matter what their tribal background or ethnicity. Secret Battles of Genghis Khan outlines the history and experiences of the man that is regarded as the founding father of Mongolia.
NEW ONGOING TO BRING GAMBIT'S SEXY BACK
by Frankie Rodriguez
Coming this August, our favorite Ragin' Cajun will be going back to his roots as Gambit's new ongoing series will launch. The new ongoing will be written by James Asmus and art by Clay Mann as they are gonna bring Gambit back to his roots as an anti-hero.
Asmus promises that they will bring Gambit back into thievery and womanizing while he pulls heists all over the Marvel Universe. Gambit's return to his roots, according to the author, will be a way to counteract all his responsibility teaching at the Jean Grey School while feeding an addiction of sorts.
In a recent interview with Newsrama, Asmus gave an idea of what we can see in the new Gambit ongoing:

This is Gambit as his own man, thieving his way through the larger Marvel Universe. I will be pulling in some other X-Men characters a little further down the line when the story demands it. His status quo in the X-Men books is still a part of who he is here — but these adventures could almost be thought of as his reaction to his sudden position as teacher and role model. When being a school teacher gets a little suffocating for him – he slips off to indulge in this addiction in order to feel like himself again. And make no mistake, for most professional thieves, the work is an addiction. Gambit is no exception, and it’s going to bring a whole lot of trouble down on him — and eventually on the Jean Grey School.
There are more than just Gambit's return to his roots with high adventure and a brand new femme fatale that Asmus promises to be Gambit's foil throughout the series. Asmus and Mann were given the green light to revamp Gambit's costume, getting rid of what Asmus calls the 'head sock.' Asmus also commented on Mann and what he brings to the book:
It seems the Ragin' Cajun is posed to steal hearts and minds with this new series. Gambit # 1 written by James Asmus and art by Clay Mann will hit stores in August.

COMING SOON TO A SPIDER-BOOK NEAR YOU!!
By Hector Ramirez
Hey Clashers, your friendly neighborhood clasher here with news on what us webheads can expect in the months to come directly from C2E2. The people over at Marvel have some great plans for the entire franchise. Check this stuff out!!!
First, we visit Kaine Parker in Houston. Our newest web slinger is set to face Anna Kraven in issue six. But on a sadder note, it is my displeasure to announce that Ryan Stegman is leaving Scarlet Spider :,( But fear not, we still can see his great art in Fantastic Four.
Next, big things happening in the world of Venom, including Spiderman learning of his recent induction into the Secret Avengers.
“I wanted to set things up so that the tension of what happens when Spider-Man finds out Venom is Flash[Thompson] is high. Peter is going to find out that Captain America has put together a Secret Avengers team and that his biggest villain, Venom is on it. This would be like Spider-Man putting together a Secret Avengers team and putting the Red Skull on it. The idea is that the drama there is rich. When Peter finds out, that seems like a terrific story.” -Rick Remender courtesy of BleedingCool.com
Also Eddie Brock is hunting down all the Venom symbiotes; which will lead to something big for both him and Toxin, the female symbiote. And last but certainly not least, Flash faces his “trial by fire” when he goes toe to toe with the Savage Six.
Now for the big arachnid on campus himself, heeeere's Peter. A lot is going on with the ‘Ends of the Earth’ arc but things don’t get easier for Peter after that. (What kind of comic would it be if they did?) In the upcoming story arc ‘No Turning Back’ Peter has a nice little reunion with Doctor Curt ‘The Lizard’ Connors who is currently in the care of Dr. Michael Morbius.
“We haven’t seen Spider-Man, Lizard, and Morbius together since ASM #100 through #102 in 1971 when Spider-Man had six arms.”
– BleedingCool.com
“We will break through the wall between the Marvel universe and the Ultimate universe. The response has been incredible. If you know what a shadow Peter Parker in the Ultimate Universe casts over Miles Morales, you can image what meeting Peter Parker from another universe will have on him.” –Axel Alonso courtesy of BleedingCool.com
It is also revealed that both Aunt May and Gwen Stacy of the ‘Ultimate’ universe are to play a part in this crossover as well as a mystery character who will have a big impact on the story.
It is definitely shaping up to be quite a summer in the world of Spiderman and his friends and I know for one I will be quite the happy Clasher. Until then, keep clashing.
WAID GETS THRILLBENT & INSUFFERABLE
by Frankie Rodriguez
Announced a couple of weeks ago, Waid has stated that he was starting a digital comics company & website. He's reasoning behind it was that because it cost so much to print and creators only get a minimum share of the profits, digital printing will allow for creators to get a bigger chunk of the pie. Yet, those were the only details revealed ... until this past weekend.
During C2E2, Waid unveiled Thrillbent.com, the digital comic website he had started. Launching May 1st, the site will be made up of creator-owned works. Waid promised that each week, there would be a new series, made up of known creators but he will be writing all the initial launch titles on the site. Waid emphasized that Thrillbent.com will make itself accessible through all types of digital media apps.
With the titles, the actual release date of the titles will be on Wednesdays with 8 to 10 pages of story. Waid commented to CBR:
"You give them just enough where there's movement in the story but enough of a cliffhanger where you're like, 'Oh God, I wonder what happens next?'"
Thrillbent.com will be EXCLUSIVELY digital media only; no print. At least for now as Waid explained that Thrillbent.com needed to get on its feet first before it goes to print. Waid also went on to talk about one of the marquee titles for Thrillbent.com: the upcoming Insufferable. Insufferable is about . .. better yet. Let me let him tell you.
"It's about what happens when you have a kid sidekick who grows up to be a douchebag," he said. "It's about what happens when you have a sidekick who grows up to be a completely ungrateful, self-aggrandizing, Kanye West of a man who will not shut up about how much of a genius he is and how the world is a better place now that you guys are broken up because now he can do it all the way he wanted to do it. Then the story is, what is the one case that comes up where they have to put their heads together even though they have been broken apart for years and they hate each other? What is the one case that could bring them back together again?" - CBR

Insufferable will be the first title launched with Thrillbent.com.Working on Insufferable with Waid is former Incorruptible artist, Peter Krause.
Waid promises that the format of the comics themselves will be 4 x 3, so you can see the entire page and it will be easy to see on either mobile phones or monitors. There is yet to be any price points stated for the titles. Thrillbent.com will launch May 1st, 2012.

GENGHIS KHAN'S STORY HITS COMICS
Official IDW Press Release
“My job,” Gregory said, “was to comb through his history to find the key moments in his life and discover what drove him. Alan had the toughest job, though. He had to show not only the emotional lives of a huge cast of characters, but deliver the epic sweep of the story, with one bloody battle after another. People are going to be blown away by what he's done.”

If you saw his work in "Age of X," you know that the guy has a phenomenal ability to design characters and even settings that is both tremendously evocative and entirely believable and engrossing. He really blends a dramatic visual flair with practical design that lets you both buy into the reality of the characters and the world, while simultaneously tapping into what’s appealing with each character. And with Gambit — a big part of that is a sexiness that Clay’s art delivers in spades! Which is good, because I’ve honestly lost count of how many women I know who get uniquely excited when you mention Gambit. I think a lot of young girls felt something for him in the 90s cartoon akin to the strange feelings I had for Chetara on Thundercats as a kid...
It seems the Ragin' Cajun is posed to steal hearts and minds with this new series. Gambit # 1 written by James Asmus and art by Clay Mann will hit stores in August.

#47 VENOM: CIRCLE OF FOUR
Hey there Clashers, Hector here coming at you with one "Hell" of a review. This week, we'll be looking at a story that takes it's four heroes to Hell and back, literally, in this storyline Marvel brings together one of the most ragtag bunch of 3rd generation heroes and really give them their own purpose. So, grab your spf 666 and let us descend shall we.
Story starts off with Flash "Venom" Thompson having gone AWOL after the government attempted to remove the symbiote from him. Thunderbolt"Red Hulk" Ross is sent after him to bring him in. Meanwhile , Johnny Blaze is training Alejandra, the newest Ghost Rider, who is less than grateful to say the least. At this time, Blackheart has launched a plan to bring Hell to Earth with Sin City itself as the doorway. Once Hell was brought to Earth, he planned on using an army of symbiote clones of X-23 to overtake his father as King of Hell. X-23 was on a mission to make sure her DNA wasn't used for such heinous purposes. Blackheart tricks Alejandra to open the portal and keep it open. Johnny agrees to take her place while she teams up with the other three to stop Blackheart.
Hell on Earth has been done over and over again in all forms of media but this was different. Storywise, it was enjoyable, not cliche or slow. Usually, in these kinds of stories, there would be one, shining, divine hero. Instead, we got 4 questionable heroes. It had action even with the hell mumbo jumbo. It was fast paced, exciting and different. The art was great. No complaints there. It really complimented the story. It wasn't too cartoony or artsy, yet not too realistic. Overall, it was a good book but not great. I dont know just didnt exactly blow my mind. I give it a Red Robin (3 out of 5). Well, that's all for now. Until next time Clashers, keep clashing.

THIS WEEK IN AWESOME # 6
And we're back. CBC goes over the events in life and comics that were just so damn awesome this week.
CBC's Darryll "YTC" Carter
Met a girl earlier today that hadn't seen any of the Batman movies. Not Burton, not Kilmer, not Clooney or Nolan. Shit blew me away. Then she told me she hadn't seen Back to the Future or Jurrasic Park either. Wtf.

CBC's Hector Ramirez
My moment of awesome comes from Venom 13.4 when defeated by Blackheart separately and almost losing the Spirit of Vengeance to him. They steal it before he absorbs it give it to the hulk who also takes on the Venom symbiote and blasts through Blackheart's window on a giant hell cycle declaring "We am smash for Vengeance." While cheesy, it is rather epic.
CBC's EIC Frankie Rodriguez
Mine is from the first (now sold out) issue of Hell yeah. We find out our main character, Ben Day, has family that have met and/or are superheroes. He is getting beaten up outside a club and he goes on about what he's learned then punches the guy so hard that he breaks teeth and says "KA-Pow A********!"
It was a great opening scene to a book that I will be collecting.

Toku Time or Reviewtopia: Toku Time is where you can find him.
It's the new, BRAND NEW, Super Mario Dubstep Album. Listen as your favorite music from Super Mario has been transformed into remixes. The album is so addicting, you will feel like you're an addict!
GREEN MUSHROOMS & SUPERSTARS
And don't for get the recently released Sonic Remix Album, SPIN DASH AUDIO is also available now.

COUNTDOWN SPECIAL #3 - HECTOR'S TOP 10 BEST OF THE BAD
This time, Hector goes through his top 10 Best Baddies in Comics. Take it away!
9.Lex Luthor-believes himself to be God’s gift to Metropolis. He does not like anyone taking his glory with unlimited resources and genius level intelligence, Luthor is definitely a force to be reckoned with.
8.Animus-cocky a smart ass and mad powerful this son of Hellsyn is no laughing matter with his sharp tongue and hell powers he’s no laughing matter and very entertaining to read about be sure to read about him in Angel Savior exclusively from J1Studios.
7.Violator-disguised as a disgusting fat little clown he is no Ronald McDonald. he hates Spawn for being considered as to lead Malebogia’s army . Violator believes he deserves to do this. When in his demonic form Violator is a problem.
6.Jason Wynn-unlimited reach in the government and ties with the Violator Wynn is the reason Al Simmons is Spawn using him to do his dirty work then disposed of him willing to do anything to cover his tracks getting on his bad side is not a good idea
5.Doctor Doom –ruler of Latveria master of both magic and science he is Reed Richards match in intellect definitely a serious threat and not one to be taken lightly.
4.Norman Osborn- completely insane maniacal and manipulative there isn’t much Osborn can’t do I mean the man made the nation believe he had reformed then attacked Asgard. They don’t come much worse than Norman Osborn.
3.Venom-a man with a majorly bruised ego and an alien symbiote giving him enhanced strength and mimicking spider powers can you say bad combo a fan favorite although portrayed as a hero at times venom is in my opinion is at his best as a villain sorry to any fans of the recent Venom incarnation of Flash Thompson.
2.Joker- the clown prince of crime with only one former identity (Red Hood)unless you count his identity in the first Tim Burton film (till this day my favorite) stopping at absolutely nothing to torment Gotham and Batman there’s not much of a motive to his madness you could never turn this guy into a hero he shall always be one of the greatest villains of all time.
1.Crime Syndicate – there is a good reason why this team made the list it’s an exact evil counterpart to the Justice League from a different dimension. With the powers of the Justice Leagues but no morals to hold them back, they’d put one hell of a fight on your hands.
Bad guys like this are what make our heroes so heroic and what keeps us cracking open new issues and of course keeps us clashing. Hector Ramirez deucing out until next time friends keep clashing.
