The Untold Final Chapter of HARBINGER WARS – Declassified in HARBINGER #17!

Valiant is proud to present an advance preview of Harbinger #17 by New York Times best-selling writer Joshua Dysart and Valiant superstar Clayton Henry! Ten days ago, Peter Stanchek and the Renegades barely escaped the clutches of Toyo Harada in the epic final battle of the Harbinger Wars…or so they think. As reality unravels, Valiant's teenage superteam is about to discover the true extent of the collateral damage from the summer's blockbuster crossover event – and just what they sacrificed to make it out alive.

Meanwhile, an unforeseen threat to Toyo Harada's empire lies dormant deep within the walls of Harada's own fortified prison facility. Meet Monica Jim – aka Animalia – another survivor of the three-way conflagration that decimated the Vegas Strip and a fellow P.O.W. inside the Harbinger Foundation. Just how does she factor into the Renagades' "Perfect Day"? And could this savagely dangerous child be their only hope of escape from a perfectly designed prison of the mind?

1st Impressions: HARBINGER WARS # 4

HARBINGER WARS # 4
Written by Duane Swierczynski & Joshua Dysart
Art by Clayton Henry, Pere Perez, Mico Suayan & Brian Reber
Valiant Comics

FLIPPING THROUGH:

We open with Cronus making a threat to an unknown authority an hour before the final battle began. Then we jump into the chaos of the final battle. And boy … what battle. Psiots were changed. People died. And all the while, Harada was making his own moves for the Endgame of the war.  Bloodshot had his hands full facing off against most of the Renegades; leaving Generation Zero facing off against the H.A.R.D. Corps. And things go from bad to worse.

As you find, the book makes no attempt the winner of this conflict and just how much the losers of this war lost.

ART:

To say this book’s art ended with a bang would be an understatement. Henry, Suayan & Perez all brought their a game for the book. The panel work by each of these artist were eye opening throughout the entire issue. Crazy angles, distinct characters and vivid backgrounds. Each artist really came to their own here. Suayan though, kind of steals it at the end with his portion of the book, which slightly breaks up the artistic flow of the book but still is amazing to look at.
Reber did an outstanding job with colors this issue, making sure everyone’s work jumped off the page. Reber switched up colors and shading when it came to the tone of the page and light source. Really solid job by Reber and the rest of the art team of the book.

WRITING:

Dysart and Swierczynski deliver a solid ending to Valiant’s first event book. It tied up most of the loose ends, set up new storylines, closed chapters for some characters while opening new ones for others. There were a lot of characters this issue and all the main players were dealt with in one fashion or another. I applaud their usage of Harada … having him make sure that the other psiots were not going to have their enhancements explode in their heads then swoop in when he felt the time was right.

The H.A.R.D. Corps had a very vicious, introduction and their final role in this was just as violent as their hello. The multiple forces made for a chaotic mess. And during all that, one thing that I found smart was that neither of the children told the others that Bloodshot was trying to help the other psiots … being manipulative on purpose. The Generation Zero children … many of them … were very selfish and self serving which was good cause, in all honest, it made you dislike them as much as you felt sorry for them. Although, I do feel that Pete not checking the brains of some of the psiots with Bloodshot a misstep on his part … even thought he was getting his butt kicked by Bloodshot.

Overall, both writers gave a solid conclusion. Unfortunately, this is the only issue that I would definitely suggest getting the tie-ins for more cause the end was a bit fast. Otherwise, a good job.

OVERALL RATING:

The ending was a little breezy there and Suayan’s art definitely broke the flow but overall, a good ending to a great summer comic event.

RATING:

                I give Harbinger Wars # 4  a 8 …. Out of 10.

1st Impressions: HARBINGER # 13

HARBINGER # 13
Written by Joshua Dysart
Art by Khari Evans,  Trevor Hairsine & Ian Hannin
Valiant Comics

FLIPPING THROUGH:

We continue to look at both how Harada’s war with Project Rising Spirit came to be at the same time, we see the present day leading up to Bloodshot  coming to Vegas and his first match with the Renegades.  We find out how close Hunter & Griffon are to Harada back in 69 as they attack Project Rising Spirit.

Peter lays out the attack plan to both Generation Zero and the Renegades, making sure readers know what they plan as doing. Meanwhile, we have Faith calling to check on her grandmother … only to have the FBI call but then stop while a Lamp is flowing behind her. It falls as Kris enters to get Faith. As the plan starts to get executed, things go wrong in a big way.

ART:

Evans and Hairsine once again demonstrate their artistic prowess this issue. Hairsine really gives some interesting emotion and action during the 1969 parts of the story. Evans continues to show depth, emotion, action and character that really grab hold of us. The explanation of the plan was done with an efficient and beautifully rendered layout. The poses of Faith and other characters look natural. The characters give great expression in their body language and their facial expression.

Evans lines are clean and sharp while Hairsine was a bit thicker and sharper but both styles work well together. Hannin’s colors deliver as always, fitting the tones and actions of the scenes. Hannin hits it out of the park making Vegas very bright and sunny cause of the environment.  This group delivers a solid, entertaining issue.

WRITING:

I admit that Dysart continues to entertain me with a strong issue full of characterization balanced with action. Yes. BALANCED. It was a strong balanced issue.  We got character development with those closest to Harada as well as Harada as well as Faith, Flamingo and Peter.   Dysart works in scenes from Harbinger Wars # 3 and expand upon that.  Flamingo’s fear was pallable. Faith’s concern for her grandmother was definitely relatable. Peter displayed himself like the general that he was foretold of being when this storyline began.  Dysart works the characters beats with the plot well.

Dysart makes sure that he holds the plots together.  There is balance between going back and forth between stories.  The action and the character moments definite balance the issue out.

OVERALL IMPRESSION:

The issue has great character development and action with strong, beautiful art. As the issue goes on, you see more and more of the characters grow individually.  Dysart continues to be a masterful writer as he brings balance of action and characterization. Evans and Hairsine give us wonderful art.  Hannin continues to deliever with colors.

RATING:

Harbinger # 13 gets an 9 out of 10. Outstanding issue with balance and characterization.

1st Impressions: Bloodshot # 12

BLOODSHOT # 12
Written by Duane Swierczynski
Art by Barry Kitson, Stefano Guadiano & Brian Reber
Valiant Comics

FLIPPING THROUGH:

The journey to Las Vegas Continues as Bloodshot leads his group towards Vegas as they need to make a pit stop for some food. The pit stop becomes an adventure as Kuretich shows up with a team from Harada to take down Bloodshot at a meat factory. In a gory confrontation, Bloodshot takes on this team while taking heavy damage. In the meantime, Kara & the kids get trapped in their own vehicle … leading to more trouble.

ART:

Kitson gives over to a grittier, darker style more and is really showcased his versatility as an artist. Kitson pushes the envelope with his style with the rougher edges and Guadiano inks creates this wonderful, rough edges. There is a lot of expression and detail in the work. The two weave wonderful panel work.

Reber’s darker colors and shades builds upon the Kitson’s pencils and Gaudiano/Kitson’s inks. The action is kinetic. The panel work is doing well. The violence was amped up. Yet, it does work with the story and the battles that take place in this book.
Kitson is a master of sequential art and this art team nails it this issue.

WRITING:

Swierczynski  gives us a great interlude to the Harbinger Wars and reflects why Bloodshot looks the way he looks during the third issue of Harbinger Wars.  He really starts to let the children shine as they work through their issues. They’re own battle, while did not outshine the star, was just as interesting and good. And we seem to become familiar with the kids that Bloodshot saved.

Bloodshot continues to build upon himself, actually stating that he misses the boy that represented the nanites … which makes his internal struggle more interesting and finding how much he relied on that boy before.  Swierczynski really gives more depth to our main character while also enhancing the supporting cast. Also, it is a great end note to Bloodshot’s relationship with Kuretich. Overall, a great written issue.

OVERALL IMPRESSION:

Harbinger Wars continues to be an interesting event while Bloodshot develops more and more. The stakes keep raising but this is an excellent breather.  We get good character development, great resolution to Kuretich & Bloodshot’s relationship. Kitson took chances with his art this issue and it really paid off.

RATING:

                A strong issue with great development, I give Bloodshot # 12 a 9 out of 10.

1st Impression: HARBINGER WARS # 3

HARBINGER WARS # 3
Written by Duane Swierczynski & Joshua Dysart
Art by Clayton Henry, Pere Perez & Brian Reber
Valiant Comics

FLIPPING THROUGH:

We see things coming together. The Renegades plan with Cronus's group within the casino. Bloodshot's group make their way into the city of Las Vegas with ease. The HARD Corps are reactivated ... and it isn't pretty as the process to reactive their bio-wet work in their body.Palmer even pukes at one point. Each side comes in and we see the collision start. Generation Zero faces off with the newly reactived HARD Corps. Bloodshot's crew ends up meeting the Renegades. Sides are being manipulated and casualties start. And Harada ... well ... he don't look happy. AT ALL.

ART:

I can start with the fact that Henry & Perez do a great job this issue on the art. It flows well. The panels are nice with dynamic, expressive shots (dude, the puking ....gross). There were A LOT of characters drawn this issue but Henry and Perez handled it with ease. Emotion was conveyed extremely well (final panel will give you nightmares just cause the look). Reber's colors really bring out the best in the pencils and inks from the artists. The fights were exciting to look at and the tension was caught amazingly by Henry, Reber & Perez. A good job over all.

WRITING:

Harbinger Wars was like that episode right before things start in an anime and at the end of the episode, it does and you are just feeling so hype. The way Swierczynski and Dysart tie all the plotlines together was so amazingly fluid that I could not believe it at first. The character dialogue felt real and was not wasteful. There was a LARGE cast here but each cast member was displayed well. Nothing felt out of place or dragged too long. There was a concentration on the HARD Corps ... which makes sense given that besides Palmer, they were introduced this issue. The way the HARD Corps work and their other members ... all things we needed to understand and we get showing them quickly and efficently. I also enjoy that Swierczynski & Dysart made sure that being a HARD Corps was not all fun and games. There is definitely a toll you pay if you are a HARD Corp and both writers showed us that. I also like how Pete Stanchek really starts to show himself as a strong leader. He's really starting to shine as the battle beigns in earnest. The twins calling out for each other and their need to get together again felt authentic. The issue continued to build and build and build without it not slowing down. A very well written issue. I loved this issue even more than last issue. Dysart & Swierczynski continue give us an event that just gets better and better with each plot and payoff it has.

OVERALL IMPRESSION:

This event has yet to disappoint me. Not once. Each issue is better and better. Art is good and getting better as it goes. The plots are being dealt with in a very organic pace and way. The characters are diverse with their own feelings, voice and motiivations that make you find at least one or two characters you can relate to. The stakes are high. The action is ever growing and building.
This has truly been a great event that makes me excited and I look forward to what comes next.

RATING:

  I give Harbinger Wars # 3 a 9 out of 10. A strong showing. Buy it now.
