The Adventures of Aero-Girl # 1 Review

THE ADVENTURES OF AERO-GIRL #1
Written by DeWayne Feenstra
Art by Axur Eneas & Juan Pablo Riebeling
Lettering by Adam Wollet

NOTE: This book is being produced through the help of Kickstarter!

This will be a spoiler free review.

We open in the city of Foxbay where our heroes, Battle Jack and Aero Girl face down the members of the Three Ring Circus. After the battle, Aero Girl’s mother starts to go on about how she’s worried about her. Battle Jack, who is also Aero Girl’s dad, tries to play both sides. Jackie aka Aero-girl goes on about how she is not a little girl anymore and walks away. Battle Jack talks to his daughter later, tell her to be careful and goes into the origin of his powers. The next day, Jackie is about to perform in the state gymnastic championship when she notices her father is not there.  She runs off and only finds tragedy await her.

THE GOOD:
Feenstra has a great grasp of character voices as he nails a teenage girl wanting to be treated as an adult, the gloating mother who is worried and the father trying not to be the bad guy. Feenstra captures the characters well, allowing us to see multiple dimensions of them throughout this first issue. The pacing was really well done, nothing feeling too heavy and Feenstra spends enough time in each scene to make it significant. The action does book end the issue but is done really well, allowing readers to get excited, breath then get excited again. The authentic dialogue and smart writing really makes this book enjoyable for all ages.

Eneas and Riebeling do a fantastic job with their cartoon style. The action looks good and jumps at you. The emotional panels are well rendered, being able to see different expression. While the style is cartoony and simplistic, Eneas gives it enough detail while Riebeling’s color breathes life into it. Some might not enjoy the style but I feel that it fits the book well.  The backgrounds and attention to detail good as well, with shading done appropriately.  Really great work from this art team.

THE BAD:
                Nada.

THE VERDICT:

Okay. The art is solid. The writing is smart and does not insult readers. The cliffhanger at the end was perfect. I could see this animated but also am completely fine with it as a comic. This is definitely a project I want to have more of . I give The Adventures of Aero-Girl # 1 a 4.5 … out of 5 stars. Really solid stuff here.

And for more Aero-Girl goodness, feel free to help their kickstarter Here!

Comics News: Action Lab Entertainment's Dave Dwonch Launches "Cyrus Perkins and the Haunted Taxi Cab" Kickstarter

Action Lab Entertainment's Dave Dwonch launches "Cyrus Perkins and the Haunted Taxi Cab" on Kickstarter.

Cyrus Perkins and the Haunted Taxi Cab is a four issue supernatural crime noir comic series. When a young boy named Michael dies from a gunshot wound in his taxi cab, Cyrus Perkins is thrust to the role of unlikely hero as Michael's spirit is trapped in his cab. Cyrus must solve his murder, and give him the peace to pass into the afterlife.
Described as part murder mystery and part buddy cop story, Dave's inspiration for the series comes from an..unusual source.

"Last year, amid several health issues, I misdiagnosed myself with food poisoning. Days later I was being rushed to the hospital in a taxi cab as my body was shutting down. In between bouts of unconsciousness I muttered, "If I die in this cab I'm haunting it." to the cabbie. This was the inspiration for Cyrus Perkins." Dave states on his Kickstarter page.

Dave Dwonch has been a comics writer and artist producing indie titles for over a decade. In 2010 he founded Action Lab Entertainment with fellow indie mavericks and as Creative Director for Action Lab helped produce several of their titles including the Eisner nominated series Princeless. Recently he penned several titles, most notably Vamplets (with Gayle "My Little Pony" Middleton), Ghost Town, and CBR's Top 100 of 2013 series Double Jumpers.
Joining Dave as artist is Anna Lencioni.  A graduate of the Savannah College of Art and Design,  Anna has been working as a sequential artist on such titles as NFL Rush Zone and Miss America. Cyrus Perkins is her first long form project.

"Cyrus Perkins and the Haunted Taxi Cab is a 100% creator-owned project, and truly a labor of love. With your help, Anna and I are hoping to cover the production cost of the first issue of the comic. This series is a huge undertaking, and your donations will allow us to take time out of our schedules to produce the fully colored artwork and limited edition Kickstarter Edition of Cyrus Perkins #1."

Tortured Life Kickstarter live!

(United Kingdom) T Publications announced today the launch of a Kickstarter campaign to fund their miniseries. The firstdraft issue has had such a positive response the company decided to finish the title in a six issue full color miniseries. Tortured Life tells the story of Richard Carter a man who can see how you are going to die. At first, Richard tried to help people - thinking his gift was something that would allow him to save lives.  Unfortunately for Richard this was not the case; he was destined to watch those around him die, powerless to stop fate from playing out it's wicked hand. But there is much more to this; he's not alone in this horror story.

See more about the title, read the first issue for free at http://kck.st/1cuoISR

What others are saying about Tortured Life and T Publications:
"Neil Gibson is an undiscovered Brian Michael Bendis" -Bleeding Cool

"Gibson has a talent for suspense and it really flourishes in his writing...he takes a left turn right in front of you, cuts off your train of thought and leaves your mind crashed and wondering what just happened -- in a good way, of course." - Comics Bulletin

"Neil Gibson does everything he needs to and in just 24 pages creates a life, a problem and delivers enough suspense to make us intrigued." -Forbidden Planet

"Well written and illustrated, this is a fantastic story that leaves you feeling sorry for the main character. What makes this such a gripping read is the slow and steady build up and evenly sectioned story." - Pages&Panels

Pittsburgh, P.A- Comic book publisher Action Lab Entertainment and long time comic book creator Ray Height have reached an agreement to publish Midnight Tiger, Height’s creator owned superhero project.

Midnight Tiger joins other creator-owned critical successes SkywardPrincelessMolly Danger, and Vamplets, adding to the company’s growing roster.  Co-written by Height and DeWayne (The Adventures of Aero-Girl) Feenstra, Midnight Tiger revolves around young high school senior Gavin Shaw, a disillusioned teen living in the crime-infested city of Apollo Bay who has lost faith in the heroes he admired growing up.  After attempting to save the life of the gravely injured hero known as Lionsblood while on his way home from school, Gavin finds himself waking up in a hospital bed days later with amazing new super human abilities and smack dab in the middle of a 15 year old secret that could unravel the fabric of the superhero community.

Originally funded on Kickstarter and self published by Height, Midnight Tiger will be a four-issue mini-series, with the first issue tentatively scheduled for a May, 2014 release. “Action Lab’s interest in bringing Midnight Tiger onto their roster of already great titles couldn’t have come at a better time,” says Height, whose previous credits include Spider-GirlPower Man: Shadowlands, and Fear Itself: Fearsome Four, among others.
“I think readers are in for a treat-- the book will appeal to a lot of people and DeWayne and I are going to try and imbue healthy doses of fun and adventure in our urban coming of age teen superhero drama."
Action Lab President Kevin Freeman echoed Height’s sentiments.  “This is another feather in the cap of Action Lab, and shows that we are sustaining the momentum of our previous creative successes.  Ray brings an enthusiasm and energy to his work that really makes it pop, and we are confident that we will have another hit on our hands with Midnight Tiger.”

Misfortune High - On magic and diversity

Hello again fine folks on TheBrokenInfinite! I am back to tell you about Misfortune High a comic written and drawn by Jules Rivera. Who worked with Jeremy Whiltey on their first collection of short stories, particularly the short story titled "Meet The Smiths". The comic is set in a world where magic users are commonplace and focuses on a rich snob magic user who gets sent from the elite magic school he was in, to a magic school on "the bad side of town" and, as one would assume antics ensue.

Like with Nutmeg this kickstarter is not asking for much either, just enough to print a full run of the comic, with stretch goals going toward a higher quality print like making it hardcover and also even toward the second book, out of a planned five.

If you like fantasy that looks like its set in modern times and that has plenty of charm, please go ahead and back it or spread it to people who also would like it and can back it.

If you want to know more about Jules Rivera (she explains more about who she is on her kickstarter of course) she is a freelance illustrator and animator based in Los Angeles, and as I mentioned has worked with comic book creators like Princeless' Jeremy Whitley.

Check it out, spread the word http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/julesrivera/misfortune-high-book-1

Nutmeg: A comic about baking, crime, and growing up

Hello everyone out there on the BrokenInfinite! Jackie Crofts the cover artist for Jeremy Whitley's short stories collection about the world of his series Princeless "Girls Who Rock" and writer James Wright have a kicksterter on a comic they have been working on that's about two girls and "baking, crime and growing up" called Nutmeg. The comic features two girls who bond, and become criminals by baking. Yes, you heard that right, baking.

The writer and artist team are planning two print 500 copies of the first issue of their comic Nutmeg to bring to upcoming comic conventions. Of course if they exceed their goal they'll see about printing more and giving more perks to those who help fund it.

They have a fair goal in mind, $1,800, which is basically just enough for the printing and the comic itself looks to have a lot of charm. If you wish to chip in or tell others who can to chip in check out the kickstarter here. http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1874515474/nutmeg-issue-1

Comic News: John "Super Ugly" Williams' Check Please!

John "Super Ugly" Williams' Check Please! comes to Kickstarter, featuring a slew of Action Lab creators!

My name is John Williams and I run the Guest Checks blog.

Before becoming a full time artist, I waited tables for 12 years and love the
culture of food and restaurants, I just recently started a Kickstarter project

and thought you guys might be interested. A few years back I created a blog where my friends would draw whatever they wanted on Guest Checks, or "the checks that waiters write your order on". It was so fun, seeing what they created. The blog got such a great response, we were featured on the Huffington Post, Laughing Squid and a few other Restaurant and Food blogs. I have always thought of this project as perfect for Kickstarter.  We started this project to help us fund the release of Check Please! A 9x9inch, 80 page, full color hardcover book. We have lined up some of the best and brightest artists across the country to be in this book, like, N8 VanDyke, Matt136, Skinner, Dave Correia, Cody Schibi, Emonic, C.B. Canga, Ken Davis, Super Ugly, Dave Dwonch, JoeMur, Robert Bowen, Brian Canio, Cody Vrosh, Danielle Corsetto, Sam Flores and so many more. I hope you can be a part of this project, whether it's spreading the word through your website and social media, or just telling a friend you think might be into it. These kind of projects need as much word of mouth as possible, cause you never know who this is going to appeal to. Please take some time to check out the KickStarter page, I have attached the link for the
Kickstarter http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1711568151/check-please-a-collection-of-art-on-guest-checks
and some images you can use on your various pages. I appreciate any feedback and comments and whatever help you provide, even if that is sending us some well wishes.
Thank you so much,
John Williams
Super Ugly

Jeremias thoughts:
You know I used to work in the food industry myself, and a collaboration like this featuring art on something not commonly seen is pretty cool.I t reminds me of what I used to do, not on guest checks, but pretty much the same, plus Action Lab's own Dave Dwonch is contributing. Chip in if you can,

R.E.M.'s Double or Nothing In Solving The Mystery Of Sleep

Header
GLEN HEAD, NY (September 11, 2013)
Following the success of his critically acclaimed werewolf spaghetti-western, Harbor Moon, Indie graphic novel creator, Ryan Colucci, proudly announces the completion of R.E.M., a mind-bending thriller written/created by Colucci and beautifully illustrated by Zsombor Huska.
R.E.M. is a 176 page Hardcover Original Graphic Novel about Michael Letto, a brilliant but paranoid neuroscientist. Since his first and only love died, he’s lived behind a series of locks, consumed with solving the mystery of sleep. Based on the principles of yoga, Michael invents a chair that enables one to attain a full night’s sleep in a matter of minutes. When his theories catch the attention of the military and a religious order that wants to use his research to attain enlightenment, a dangerous cat and mouse begins as Michael’s world deteriorates
The team behind R.E.M. launched its Kickstarter campaign just  weeks ago to bring the striking black and white hardcover to print, and has currently almost doubled its stated goal of $7,000.

Time for a little Q&A:

How would you describe your Graphic Novel R.E.M.?
As a science fiction tale wrapped into a film noir. At it’s core, R.E.M. is really a love story.  But it’s definitely not your typical kind of love story.
What were the inspirations that drove you to create R.E.M.?
It came from my own research into sleep. Ever since I was a child, I have always hated going to sleep.  I couldn’t understand why we were wasting these hours that we could be doing other, fun things.  So I started to search for this thing.
When people would find out what I was researching they would always say how interesting it was and that it would make a great story/movie.  But I always wrote them off, because for me it was real life.  It was something I was striving for.
And enough people told me to do it that one day I was sitting down and outlining the story.

The style of this book is captivating. How did you link up with the artist and what's the visual idea behind the book?
Although I did always envision this in black and white and with a film noir look, the visual idea was more about me finding the right artist and letting him work. So, it was finding Zsombor that was the hard part.
After a test page, it was immediately obvious he fit exactly what I was looking for.  Not just for R.E.M., but the visual style I wanted to convey across the spectrum of all my other projects. I couldn’t imagine doing another project without him.
He really captured the dark nature of these characters and their environment.  There are things he did that weren’t in the script, but made the story so much better.

The Kickstarter seems to be going well and the campaign is already funded. Do you consider it to be a success or is it just a jump-start?
The campaign is for printing costs.  Kickstarter is all or nothing.  I needed to set a goal that made sense. The other costs were already spent, but printing was something I just couldn’t afford. So I’m beyond thrilled we even that mark.  I had my doubts leading up to the start (I spent a lot of time preparing for it), but we were able to hit our stated goal in ten days. The book itself (including printing) will cost almost exactly $20,000.
Is there anything else you want to tell comic readers about R.E.M.?

If you enjoy a challenging story, I hope you’ll check us out. Although it is very much a thriller, there is something in the book if you are looking for a different type of love story as well.
Anyone can read the first 30 pages on the website (www.remchair.com)... so give it a shot.  That's all we ask. You can actually check out a prequel of the story as a short film on the website as well. Mutant Football League™ Resurrects a Classic Gaming Genre via Kickstarter

All of the Muck, Mutants, Monsters and Mayhem Being Brought Back to Life by Original Game Series' Creator/Designer
Chicago, IL - September 16, 2013 - An all-star team of talent has been assembled to breathe new life into one of the video game industry's most beloved, and downright brutal, sports-hybrid genres. Michael Mendheim, the original creator and lead designer of Mutant League, is initiating a Kickstarter effort for a new video game entitled Mutant Football League™. With fan support, and a successful Kickstarter campaign, Mendheim is planning to release his Mutant Football League game on Xbox LIVE, as well as on iOS and Android tablets.
The original Mutant League video game was released in 1993 for the Sega Genesis. The combination of monsters, mayhem, and good ol' American team sports turned the game into a cult classic.
"It's the 20th anniversary of the original game, so this is an ideal time to release a new over-the-top football game featuring monsters and mutants for the many fans who have been clamoring for it," stated Mendheim. "The fans have kept their interest in this genre alive over the years and we want to reward them for their loyalty.  We will be creating a new and very different game that pays homage to classic monster sports games and parodies the owners, the coaches, the sponsors and everything else that makes football such a great American sport."

An all-star team of art and writing talent culled from the gaming, comic book and animation industries have been assembled to form the Mutant Football League roster:
  • Michael Mendheim: Creator and lead designer of the original Mutant League series, writer of the hit Heavy Metal graphic novel, The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse™.
  • Simon Bisley: Eisner Award winning artist (Lobo, ABC Warriors)
  • Dave Devries: Creator of The Monster Engine http://www.themonsterengine.com/ a popular children's art book, lecture, demonstration and gallery exhibition that explores the premise of what a child's drawing would look like if it were painted realistically.
  • Dave Elliott: Comic writing legend (A1, Weirding Willows, Heavy Metal)
  • Jay Lender: Writer and director of SpongeBob Squarepants and Phineas and Ferb
  • Micah Wright: Writer of Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 Zombies.
  • Robomodo Studios: Talent behind Tony Hawk series of games, Fight Night 3 and NBA Street.

Mutant Football League will be a great-playing action football game with deep strategy, bone-crunching hits, over-the-top gore, a graveyard full of tongue-through-cheek humor, and a mind-blowing roster of original customizable characters, environments, and gameplay features and options, including:
  • Mutants vs. Monsters - 30 vicious teams featuring  a variety of awesome, fully customizable Monster and Mutant characters including: Mutant Humans, The Undead, Battlebots, Orcs, and more!.
  • Maximum Carnage - Inflict devastating mayhem on the opposition with punching, kicking, bombs, clubs, axes and even chainsaws.
  • Killer Stadiums - The stadiums are filled with crazed and obnoxious weapon-wielding fans, and the fields are strewn with hazards, traps and debris. No field is the same, and all fields are deadly.
  • Dirty Trick Plays - These are mean, nasty, unfair and lowdown plays intended to hose the opposition, or if that doesn't work, kill them.
  • Customizable Creatures - Create and name your own team and players, assign players a position, train them with skills and abilities, give them attack moves, add armor and weapons and let them loose!
  • Tongue-Through-Cheek Humor - A fun, entertaining and off-the-wall parody of the NFL, with all the excitement, hard-hitting action, lunacy, unspeakable greed, corporate ruthlessness, hypocrisy and over-the-top egos that professional sports has to offer.

Comics News: Indie Creator Ryan Colucci Decides R.E.M. Needs a Kickstart

When his theories catch the attention of the military and a religious order that wants to use his research to attain enlightenment, a dangerous cat and mouse begins as Michael’s world deteriorates.

It's a psychological thriller with elements of science fiction and film noir. The underpinnings were inspired by my own beliefs in (im)mortality, love and faith and personal research into a sleep chamber… while the framing and look of the story was inspired by film noir from the 50’s. All limited Kickstarter copies will be signed and numbered (numbers starting based on pledge date/time). For the past two years we worked from the script stage to the final panels and lettered pages. 176 pages is a lot of ink, but this is how Zsombor takes care of business...
The team behind R.E.M. launched its Kickstarter campaign just 3 weeks ago to bring the striking black and white hardcover to print, and has currently exceeded its stated goal of $7,000.
A trailer from the book can be viewed on the Kickstarter page and features a brilliant score by Grammy nominated DJ, Dirty South.
With a successful campaign on Kickstarter, R.E.M. will make its debut at New York Comic-con 2013 in October.
