1st Impressions: JACK HAMMER # 3

JACK HAMMER # 3
Written by Brandon Barrows
Art by Ionic
Action Labs Entertainment

FLIPPING THROUGH:
Jack, with the help of Ramona, finds a way to piece together what’s been going on. It seems that the company Technotrends has had some dirty dealings. The CEO, Eddie Newman, found out about them and hence the beginning of this series. As more and more answers are uncovered, the mastermind behind the whole caper is making his final moves to deal with Jack … once and for all.

ART:
Ionic does a pretty good job here.  All the characters are well rendered and this is more detail this issue than in last with the backgrounds and characters. We got some pretty decent classic background work from Ionic.  The movement of the characters look more fluid this issue, which makes the action stand out more during those moments during the second half.
Solid, classic panel work here; definitely going with the noir, crime drama feel of the book. Ionic makes sure the colors are not too vivid; thus, creating a great atmosphere for the issue and the overall genre of the comic. While some of his perspective shots with characters in the distance aren’t very detailed, but do not take away from the book this issue.

WRITING:
Meanwhile, Barrows produce a good issue as he speeds towards the arc’s climax. Barrows presents a very capable detective in Jack Hammer as he starts filling in holes to the mystery behind Eddie Newman’s death and the kidnapping of his wife by super-powered thugs.
What I love about the book is that the super powers are very much secondary. Barrows focuses more on the plot and mystery aspects of the book. This allows Barrows to really focus on Jack as a characters and even feel more relatable.  Thus, the battle at the end of the book feels a bit more exciting, because the stakes feel much higher.  This isn’t a world where super powers are as common place as Marvel or DC … they are a bit stricter here. There is a good grasp of reality that helps give the book a strong identity and it shines very much this issue.
The book is paced extremely well as it goes on a consistent uphill climb towards the climax. The dialogue feels authentic with good homage to old noir or gumshoe flicks. Barrows presents the pieces of the mystery coming together very well, allowing Jack to be our guide. The villain’s reveal seemed a bit typical till you actually got into his/her motivation.  Barrow shines as we see super powers dealt with a bit differently here.
Barrow’s does produce a good issue. The only thing that is keeping it from being a great issue is that it’s a bit dialogue heavy. Sure. There is a lot happening ; but there is a large amount of dialogue that ends up interrupting the flow. Otherwise, a solid job from Barrows.

OVERALL IMPRESSION:

This issue was good. It moved towards the climax. There was a lot happening but didn’t feel cluttered.  The art was good and the writing was strong. The dialogue heaviness of it might interrupt the flow a little. Otherwise, a great read.

RATING:

I give Jack Hammer # 3 an 8 … out of 10. Pick it up now!

1st Impression: Overtaken # 1

OVERTAKEN # 1
Written by Frank Mastromauro
Art by Marco Lorenzana & Wes Hartman
Aspen Comics

FLIPPING THROUGH:
This comic opens with two groups of aliens at war. Then we cut to a couple moving to a nice town called Turtle Creek. Meet Jesse and Will. Will is a news reporter. Will, on his first day, tries to chase down a kids for a story. And, as the couple gets settled, they meet many locals of the town and revealed that they moved there from Chicago to help out Jesse’s parents. Unfortunately, the happy couple are rocked by a sudden disturbance.

ART:
There is some REALLY stunning art in this comic. The first page alone is worth the price of the book. There are some really gorgeous space scenes and some wonderful Earth scenes that really work in this book. The people are nice and proportionate. No hyper idolized stuff here. And the movement of the characters looks very natural. Marco Lorenzana is a true find. His pencils are amazing. His aliens look foreign. His cars and backgrounds look spectacular. His people all look distinct. Really great pencils and Hartman’s color explodes with each and every panel.
I LOVE the art in this book and am looking forward to more of it.

WRITING:
Mastromauro constructs for us a GREAT first issue. He gives us a taste of the sci-fi elements then works on building the characters and mystery. The pacing in this book is AMAZING. Nothing felt out of wack. The dialogue is natural, believable and relatable. The book flows so very well from one scene to the next. And I am already in love with Jesse and Will. A very believable couple moving from the city down to a small town. The plot of the book doesn’t really kick up till the end but Mastromauro REALLY pulls through with a strong cliffhanger.

OVERALL IMPRESSION:
I love this book. I am glad this title was picked to be one of the 10 for 10. Mastromauro has a great mystery here and we have some of the best art I have seen in comics today.

RATING:
10 out of 10! PICK THIS UP WHEN IT HITS STORES TOMORROW!!!

Ink Black Analysis - Boogiepop Phantom

"There's nothing in this world that is ever truly decided. Birds sometimes fall out of the sky, and sometimes it snows in April. Everything is uncertain, nothing is unnatural."

Ink Black Analysis - Texhnolyze

"I believe it wasn't by accident that I picked you up. I for one think that it's boring to keep reproducing the same technology over and over again. With Raffia and texhnolyzed limbs a human only recovers the previous shape and nothing more. I've been wanting to create a more unique chemistry from the combination."

Comic Review: Comeback #1

COMEBACK #1
Written by Ed Brisson
Art by Michael Walsh & Jordie Bellaire
Image Comics (Shadowline)

FLIPPING THROUGH:

We open to a man getting kidnapped and fall into a grand mystery. The kidnappers are partners Mark & Seth ... they work for a secret organization that were paid by the man's family to bring him to the future when he was supposed to be killed shortly after he was kidnapped. This organization gets paid to take people from the point they were supposed to die and start a new life with anew identity; even coming up with fake autopsy reports and all.

We find a mysterious man taking a job that we THINK is for them. We have Seth feeling tired and haggard  And after we have a family who hired Mark & Seth to do a job end up missing we have ....

ART:

Comeback has a tone of mystery and intrigue and Walsh displays that well.  There is a noir feel going with the story and art as Comeback gives the right atmosphere for the story. Walsh is about to give great emotion while still having fun with the sci fi aspects of the story. The style is simple and dark but still intricate enough to distinguish people and their emotions and fits.

Jordie Bellaire's colors really help sell the atmosphere of the story as this sci-fi noir mystery continues it march. Scene colors match the tone of the scene. From the abduction being vivid and somewhat scary  to the dark underbelly of the way of time travel .... Bellaire really makes Walsh's art build upon the conspiracy and mysteries surrounding the story visually.

Overall all ... Walsh's art is good and solid but it is Bellaire that really helps sell it.

WRITING:

Ed Brisson wrote a great piece here. We get a little action with a great, fast paced start. We slow down a little to get some meat. Then we get some more rising action. This was kind of shown like a first act of a movie or a miniseries that you'd see on tv. But it is good writing. Strong writing. Characters have an air of mystery but you want to know more about them. The plot is innovative as it is just taking reality and turning it up a bit instead of all out fantasy. Nothing last too  long. And the acts in the book are pretty well paced.

Brisson knows he's got so much time and space and utilizes it well.

OVERALL IMPRESSION:

Comeback is off to a great start for a 1st issue. It starts off strong and grips you right away and the plot keeps you coming back for more. Walsh and Bellaire are a good team together and really help give the story its noir/sci-fi feel. The story is definitely one to keep an eye on and I look forward to what we see and read next.

I give Comeback # 1 a 4 out of 5. I will come back for more.

Perception #2

The story picks up sometime after Jarmo heads home from what happened in part 1. It is still the same day but in the evening.

In his darkened apartment Jarmo can't seem to stop replaying the noises in his head. The strange, unfamiliar noises. Just what was that? Jarmo recalls heading out of the hospital and hearing one-liners and something about twinkies. "Twinkies? What's special about them? Do they have chemicals in them that cause hallucinations? Are they laced with trinity?" Jarmo walks to his bathroom and sees if he can wash his face. He looks in the mirror and looks into his own eyes. He peers into his pupil and stares into the black pit and starts to wonder, "can I trust my eyes" as he starts to wash his face off and continue to try and piece together whatever facts he can about this case and why trinity is being distributed so much recently. After thinking some more Jarmo decides to call it a day and head to sleep.

Loud ringing can be heard hours later. It's Jarmo's cell phone. It's now morning. A groggy Jarmo reaches for it and looks at the caller ID. "Mr. Ramirez eh?" Jarmo answers, "it's Jarmo. So what do you have this time, Ramirez?"
"What I have is, what you need baby. Information."
"About?"
"There was an explosion!"
"What's with you telling me about explosions man?"
"There was one at the hospital that chick was at. Thought that might be of importance to your investigation"
"Looks like I have some snooping to do."

As Jarmo gets ready to go back to what remains of Kelsey Crusher hospital he gets another call. "Who is it this time?" Jarmo answers the phone "hello Jarmo is busy at the moment please call later."
"I know it's you Jarmo! Don't play around with me today, I want you in my office and I want you here 5 minutes ago!"
"Oh, crap, looks like I have to deal with ol' captain Mcclusky." He makes his way to the police station and as he enters he's greeted by a female police officer, with medium length brown hair and square frame glasses. "Hello, Frida you're looking cute as a button as always, is the captain still in his office?"
"Yes he is, I'd better hurry there if I were you." she replies, smiling warmly.
"You wouldn't want to be me kulta* you're great as you are." Jarmo says with a slight smile and even a bit of tenderness, which is rare for him. He then makes his way to Mcclusky's office and immediately spots something odd on that table.
"Is that... trinity?"
"It is. We got it from busting a lieutenant working for Mr. Frank." Mcclusky chuckles for a little bit and adds "you know you always did have good eyes, being able to spot this tiny bit of trinity on the table so quickly."
"Do I? ...Well, anyway what was it you wanted to speak to me about, sir?"
"Right, right. That explosion at the hospital. I heard you were there not long before it happened. I'm being pressed by the F.B.I now to give some information, basically I'm being forced to have you tell me something. An agent died sometime after that but before today apparently. His name was Peter or Parker or something."
"Why would they think I would be of help in that situation?"
"Like I said you were at the hospital, they figure you ought to know something about what happened there, and if whoever killed him came from there."
"All I can say was I was at the hospital, I heard things start to escalate and I high tailed it our of there."
"So you have no information about this agent's death"
No, I don't sir."
Mcclusky sighs "well, then that's all I'll have to say to them. You're free to go Jarmo."
"I have a question for you now though, sir?"
"What is it, Jarmo?"
"This Mr. Frank do we have any leads on him, are we working on busting him?"
"Right now, we have a few leads, we're not actively trying to bust him but he if say, he happens to be caught today, we won't be complaining."
"Thank you sir." Jarmo leaves his office and recalls his talk with the two thugs he fought yesterday.

As Jarmo walks away he thinks of where mr. Frankie may be. "A guy like him probably hides in plain sight. Must be in a business building downtown, just in an office neatly tucked away. That's how they like to roll."

While downtown Jarmo notices a person walking across the street. He had a bandanna and a cast and looked awfully familiar. After looking a bit harder for a few seconds Jarmo realized who it was, and crossed the street. "Hey, how's it going Bret? Remember me? I see you needed a cast after that throw I pulled off on you." Jarmo says in a very friendly voice.
"Ahh, I do remember you! I'm sorry about trying to beat you up the other day, after getting beat up like that it made me rethink my course in life. I'm on my way to Mr. Frank now to tell him I'm done selling drugs... and to run for my life afterward."
"You're going to Mr. Frank eh? Well, then you lead me to him without him being wise that I'm nearby, I'll handle that part by the way, and you won't have to worry about running for your life. How's that sound?"
"Doesn't sound too good with just you trying to get to him, but it sounds a lot better than doing what I was going to do with my busted arm, by myself."
As Bret makes his way to Mr. Frank's building, Jarmo shadows him. Finally as Bret reaches Mr. Frank's office Jarmo makes himself known to Bret and tells him to just do what he originally planned to do, and at the right time he'll burst in.

"Alright, Bret are you ready?"
"Ready as I'll ever be cop." Bret says with a tinge of fear in his voice.
Bret opens the door to Mr. Frank's office and approaches him with an air of caution. Mr. Frank is an intimidating individual, he's not overly large but fairly tall, dark skinned, wears a business suit and a perpetual poker face.
"Why have you come here today, Bret? I have no use for you today"
"Right, well, about that, you see I uh... well, I..."
"Well?"
"I uh... I want to quit."
Mr. Frank snickers. "You want to quit huh? You handing in your two weeks notice? You expect some severance pay?" Mr. Frank starts to laugh harder "severance pay!" Mr. Frank starts to guffaw now. "That's hilarious!"
"Yeah, I want out!" Bret says loudly.
"What if I say no?"
"Then I'll just leave anyway."
"You ain't leaving nowhere, Biggs, plug him."
Upon hearing that Jarmo rushes into the office and as soon as he steps foot inside sees a fountain of blood come from the back of Bret's head.
"Darn it! He could've been a good source of info. Oh well, I guess I'll have to make sure the bigger fish gets fried tonight!"
"What? What kind of line was that? Biggs get rid of this random guy too."

"Hey, I thought that was good. Anyway..." Jarmo notices Mr. Frank's henchman Biggs is appropriately named being at least six foot nine or somewhere around there, he looked to be near seven feet. He also noticed Biggs slowly fix his aim on Jarmo. "That slowness will cost you." Jarmo notices a flipped over chair near him and ducks down to make himself a smaller target and immediately kicks the chair to Biggs as he does it. It barely hurts the big man but it does distract him enough to Jarmo make his next move which is draw his gun from the back of his pants and move closer to Biggs. Jarmo executes a leg scissors and takes Biggs off his feet. As soon as he's off his feet Jarmo kicks the gun away from Biggs and aims the gun in his hand to Mr. Frank. "You're under arrest Frank"
"That's Mr. Frank to you."
"Not to me now, and not to any of the fellas in prison, I'll tell you what they will call you though, it starts with a B and rhy-"
"I get it random guy who I just learned is a cop."
"Right well, stay where you are so I can take you downtown."
"We are downtown..."
"Shut up! As you know in your rights you have the right to remain silent anyway."

Mr. Frank smiles.
Jarmo asks "why are you smiling? That big guy is getting back up isn't he?"
"Yep."
"Dagnabit" Jarmo sighs and executes a reverse leg sweep and brings Biggs down again.
"Stay down will you?"
"Never! You can't keep me on the ground can you?"
"Can I?" Jarmo presses his gun on Biggs head.
"You don't have the guts to do it! I know you cops!" Biggs violently swings his left arm at Jarmo and as Jarmo tried to quickly react his finger squeezed the trigger involuntarily. Jarmo stands slowly. With a  quiet authority Jarmo tells Mr. Frank "put your hands on your head, get on your knees." Mr, Frank listens. As Jarmo attempts to arrest Mr. Frank, Mr Frank reveals a blade he had hidden on his person and attempts to slash Jarmo. Jarmo with a fierce, yet silent determination in his eyes sways to his right and delivers a jaw jacking uppercut as he did to Paul in the previously only this time the force seemed to be greater than before and Mr. Frank could swear he felt a wind push his body up, though it couldn't be proven. Mr. Frank lands on the ground with a heavy thud. Jarmo finally arrests Mr. Frank.

Sometime after, Jarmo gets a call from Mcclusky with new information and learns that Mr. Frank worked a deal with Cesar Monticello as a part of a way to spread his influence in Nevada without being too open and seeming like he is brute forcing his way in. He then gets informed of his new orders, investigate Cesar Monticello and help the F.B.I in finding out his contacts in Nevada. For this he'll get  a partner to back him up. "Who?" Jarmo asks.
"Officer Frida."
"Officer Frida!? But she's still a girl this would be too dangerous for her."
Frida makes reveals she's been there listening to Jarmo and says to him "No need to worry about me, I've got a lot of tricks that people won't even see coming, I can handle myself, you'll see."
"Well, then we've got a lot of snooping to do, I'll see ya tomorrow kulta bright and early."
"But what about now, where do you think you're going."
"I'm tired, I'm going home and sleeping."
"But...!"
"Let him go Frida he's excused for today, he's been through a lot."
"I suppose he has. I'll see you tomorrow Jarmo! I'll show I won't be easy to push over, you'll see!"

Well, that's it for Perception chapter 2! Hope you enjoyed it, I'll see you next month! *about kulta. Kulta is a Finnish word for gold, it can also mean "baby, honey, dear, or sweetheart" and the latter meanings was the context the word was being used by Jarmo toward Frida.

That picture used in the top can be viewed here on deviantart, just a sketch of how Jarmo looks http://fav.me/d5am0t4

Perception # 1

Issue #1
Created & Written by Jeremias de Leon

Somewhere in Nevada a man named Jarmo Lehti is looking out of his kitchen window in his boring, plain apartment. Though he would have no reason to spruce the place up, however. In his line of work he has to make sure he can move out at a moments notice. There's always someone who thinks they can get their revenge on whoever put them away, even if they're in law enforcement.

Jarmo isn't staring out into space through his window though. There is a reason. An advantage to living in a rough neighborhood, criminals don't think a cop would be very close by. Let alone living in one of these rundown apartments. The punks he's been surveying are even daring enough to speak loudly about their activity. Jarmo quickly realizes it's about drugs and begins to listen intently.

“Seems that's the last of the trinity Paul” said the first punk wearing a large sunglasses.

“We better go get some more from Mr. Frank” said the other punk wearing a bandana. Both wearing white t-shirts with jeans hanging low.

“That guy scares me honestly” Paul stated with a no nonsense look on his face, he looked down then continued. “It's not even because he intimidates me or anything, it's because of his boss, I never met the guy but he's some major trouble Bret.”

“I feel ya, I heard a lot of his boys were in some major firefight” Bret replied.

“But let's shut up and get some more of that stuff man.” Paul interrupted.

“Right.”

Jarmo quickly begins to process all the information he just heard and begins to think on what it could mean. “They mentioned a firefight, there was a pretty nasty one some months ago it even involved an explosion, somewhere in Florida.” Jarmo stands up and reaches into his pants pocket, he's wearing green cargo pants and a blue button shirt that has a chest pocket.
“Let me get my phone, I bet if I look at my contacts I can remember who told me about the explosion.” As Jarmo scrolls through his contact list he sees names go by “Billy, Darryl, Jeff, Jake... that guy still owes me five bucks... let's see... ah! There we are.” Jarmo held his hand high as if he won a trophy looking at the name that gave him the previous information about an explosion in Florida. “It's time he told me more.”

As Jarmo decides his current course of action he leaves his apartment, mutters “Paul and Bret sunglasses and bandana...” and heads to the city's civic center, something most of his colleagues scratch their heads over whenever they notice he feels like getting some air and clearing his mind. Why not a bar or a more normal place? They usually ask. If there was something actually happening when he goes there they would get it but he just goes there, no matter what's happening. Which is usually nothing.

As he gets to his destination he finally phones the one who he plans to get more information out of. “Hey mr. Ramirez, it's Jarmo.”

“Ah, mr. Lehti! How's my favorite Nordic detective?” Ramirez asked with a very jolly tone.

“Eh, another day another plot with drugs and explosions being uncovered, speaking of explosions...”

“I'm guessing you want to know about the explosion in Florida.” replied Mr. Ramirez.

“Right on the money, man, so do we know anything about the people involved in that crazy firefight, I heard some punks near my apartment mentioning that firefight and explosion and Trinity being distributed here through whoever the boss of all those guys were.”

“Cesar Monticello,” Mr. Ramirez said without skipping a beat.

“Who?”

“Cesar Monticello. He's the boss of the guys in the firefight, apparently they were having a shootout with two feds. Speaking of one of those feds is in your state...”

“What!?” Jarmo exclaimed.

“Yeah, you see that agent just happens to be a friend with one of my other acquaintances she is her friend... or cousin, I don't know I was kinda just staring at her rack when she was telling me.”

Jarmo quipped “I thought attention to details was your specialty.”

“She had a big rack man...” retorted Mr. Ramirez.

“Uh... huh well, thanks for the info you said she's at a hospital in Nevada? That explains the increase in feds I've seen here. Where in Nevada man?”

“Condor Falls.”

“Condor Falls? That's only a half hour from here, even though I'm not a state trooper I think I should check it out anyway.”

Jarmo decides to make his way to back to his apartment first, on his way he has the good fortune of spotting two fellows, one with a large sunglasses, one with a bandana and both wearing the same clothes. “Well, if it isn't my two friends Bret and Paul.” Jarmo says with a grin. “Hey, you two! Stop right there and don't move.”

“Heh, who this guy think he is, a cop?” Paul said sneering.

“You're onto something there” replied Jarmo.

“Ah... crap” Bret said with a heavy sigh.

“So you're going to tell me about this 'Trinity' dealer you have, and you're going to tell me what this guy's boss has going on over here in Nevada.” Jarmo said authoritatively.

“Ha, you're going to get nothing out of us, cop except a hospital visit!” yelled Paul.

“In a way I was kinda hoping for this, I mean I like to just hang back and gather info but sometimes I need some action.” a little bit of excitement was coming out of Jarmo's voice as he said that.

“Stop talking!” Paul yelled while throwing a straight punch. As straight as an untrained hoodlum can throw anyway. Jarmo sways his shoulder to the left and throws a right hook to Paul's jaw followed by another hook to the jaw with the same hand. Jarmo grins and as Paul puts his hand up to block another blow to the face Jarmo explodes with a left to the gut and lands his last hit a jaw jacking uppercut, perfect for knocking out criminals a criminal uppercut if you will. “So you're going to tell me what's going on or do you want to have a shot at taking me out as well?” asks Jarmo.

“You just got lucky man, I'm taking you out!” yells Bret.

“They never learn, well, I'm going to need you conscious...” Jarmo whispers.

As Bret goes to grab Jarmo, Jarmo stomps on Bret's toe, then grabs Bret's left arm and executes a key-lock throw. As Jarmo has him on the ground he quickly gets up and kicks him in the ribs. “gees cop, you ever heard of police brutality?”

“Huh, oh no, you see I'm off duty today.” Jarmo then sits on Brets back and begins to interrogate him. Bret finally tells him of Mr. Frank and his spread of Trinity. With that knowledge Jarmo finally makes it to his apartment and grabs a small camera, makes it to his car and drives off to Condor Falls.

At Condor Falls, Jarmo notices multiple men and women in black the closer he got to the hospital. “Feds, everywhere it seems, surely they're here to make sure nobody can get close to that woman. Like I care, I just want to make sure they get out of here and go back to the east coast.”

He finally makes it to the hospital. “Alright, here at Kelsey Crusher... someone here ought to have some answers on why this Monticello guy wants to spread his network in Nevada.”

He begins to walk to the info desk and scouts the area around him. “More dudes in black eh? Hmm, I thought they were all feds before but these guys... something is... off about them. Anyway, let's see if I can find something out about this woman. They don't know who the crap I am, so I doubt I can just walk into her room, but I bet I can eavesdrop.” Jarmo was able to take a peek at a computer which fortunately was right on the woman's name and room number. “5th floor eh?”

He goes to an elevator and goes up, and as he leaves the elevator door he hears gunshots. “Frak! I didn't bring any heat with me I better frakin' lay low.” Jarmo goes and finds a waiting room near the woman's room and hides under a sofa. As he hears gunshots he hears other noises, noises that you wouldn't hear in a hospital room, at least not outside a lab, and he heard some other noises that definitely belonged to something living, but most definitely not human. After hearing those non-human noises Jarmo decides it's best to leave the hospital and sneaks out. As he gets back in his car to drive to his apartment all he can do is think about the strange noises.

“What was that? Aliens or something? Nah, it can't be that's as silly as some person wearing crazy armor and running amok in Utah of all places. It just can't be aliens.” But one thing was clear to him on the drive back. This is bigger than just drug dealing, and some guy wanting to expand his empire, much bigger, and if he's going to expose the truth he's going to need all the help he can get.

That's it for Perception chapter 1! Leave some feedback please, either here, or contact me on twitter @ikariradio. Look forward to chapter 2 next month.

PREVIEW: Bloodshot # 2

 Here's Bloodshot #2.
Valiant Preview: BLOODSHOT #2

Valiant is proud to present an advance preview of Bloodshot #2, from acclaimed writer Duane Swierczynski and the fan favorite artistic duo of Manuel Garcia & Arturo Lozzi!

Waking up inside a body bag is no way to start the day. But that’s where you are, and worse yet, you’re 35,000 feet above the desert, guarded by the some of the toughest soldiers on the planet. You’re being flown back to the people who created you, who may have even betrayed you. Under the Net #19

Under the Net
with Jake Estrada

Masks

Welcome to the 19th edition of Under the Net.

Hey, everyone. I decided that I was going to go to drivethrucomics.com to read a few of the digital comics on that site. This would lead others to check out this awesome site and learn more about other comics they may not have seen. The one comic I am looking at is Masks.

I will be rating the elements of the book on a scale of one through five.

One is poor, two is mediocre, three is fair, four is good, and five is excellent.

The Art

The art on this book looks like they took Poser or some other 3D art program, and they crafted the art. I must say it was interesting, but also very confusing as it felt more like I was reading a riddle from page to page and the art had almost nothing to do with the written story. I could be wrong, but that is my take on it. The images were nice but computer generated, and it gave it a mediocre look in my eyes.

ART: 2 STARS

The Writing

I assume the story was about the girl in the art. She talked about how she was wearing a mask and the writer went to great lengths to tell us that she was crazy and that people were performing tests on her at some asylum or hospital. I am not quite sure really because the story was done in a long drawn out riddle, and we only get to see that she was put under like she tried to commit suicide and they are trying to help her. She talks about hearing everything that is being said. So, I was even more taken back by the story, and I am on the fence because the story just read more like a poem that went nowhere. It is one of those comics that has a deeper meaning but left me wondering about the meaning of the masks. I know the story the way it was would end here for me, and I wouldn’t come back for a second issue.

WRITING: 2 STARS

Originality

I guess it is original for the fact that there was a style about the masks one wears in life. However, I can’t say for certain if that was the story in this comic because it was one long riddle after another. I was lost, but I would think that maybe someone who liked riddle-type comics would enjoy this. What made it harder to see it as an original comic was that they used Poser for the images.

ORIGINALITY: 2 STARS

The Pros

The lettering was nice. I did enjoy the lettering because it was very polished.

The Cons

The artwork had that Poser look, so it was very stiff. It didn’t match what the written word was trying to convey and, on top of it all, the writing was done in almost a poem style that was very hard to follow.

My Final Word

If you like comics done with programs to make very realistic worlds, and you like to be confused and not get the message then maybe this is the comic for you.

Under the Net #17

Welcome to the 17th edition of Under the Net.

I will be rating the elements of the book on a scale of one through five.

A Steampunk Supernatural Mystery

Six-Issue Mini-Series Web Comic

Written and Created
By Madeleine Holly-Rosing

Art By Emily Hu

That is what you first see when you go to the website about this comic. What I found interesting about this book was that it had a very League of Extraordinary Men vibe. It had most of the leading scientists of the late 19th century.

The Art

The art in the comic is fine, and it is done in full color. The style is quite modern, and I think from what I saw, it is quite nice. I’ll say that the art does have a manga kind of style, but it is rendered nicely.

ART: 3 STARS

The Writing

From the first 10 pages I read, the story moved along swiftly, and we learned a bit about the teams but nothing else. It was close to erupting, and I only wished it got to the brunt of the story faster because this slow read can lose readers. I will have to come back soon to see what else is updated. I know I didn’t know much; it just reminded me of reading The League from Alan Moore.

WRITING: 3 STARS

Originality

Well, like I have said, we have seen this type of gathering, but with literal characters of fiction. Now we have actual historical people, and it felt very Alan Moore-ish to me, not that is a bad thing. However, it felt like I’ve seen this so far, and I only wished I could see more.

ORIGINALITY: 3 STARS

The Pros

If you like Alan Moore-type settings without that Alan Moore voice, come and check this book out.

The Cons

The start is slow; I wish it would move along much faster. I haven’t seen much steampunk considering it feels more like early Americana to me in the way the story moves. I always thought steampunk was a completely different universe with futuristic weapons that ran on steam. I have yet to see this.

My Final Word

If you like Steampunk and mysterious ghost stories, check this comic out.

UNDER THE NET # 6 - LOVECRAFT IS MISSING

Lovecraft is Missing

By Jake Estrada

Welcome to the sixth edition of Under the Net.

I will be rating the elements of the book on a scale of one through five.

One is poor, two is mediocre, three is fair, four is good, and five is excellent.

This week’s web comic is Lovecraft is Missing. It is a web comic series that is updated about twice a week. It was created by Larry Latham who has worked on this series for quite a while. The creator had visions for this series to be a cartoon and even had the idea picked up by some serious studios. Of course as time has lapsed on these properties, the options returned to the creator. The book is a heavy dose of pulp meets horror and suspense. It is beautifully illustrated and it has a great narrative voice that conveys an epic storyline that continues to capture readers on a daily basis. If you haven’t checked out the title, you should swing by and read it for yourself. I also love the feel of the art. It reminds me of some classic Sunday funnies style artwork. I give my props to the creator.

Let me get to the breakdown of the book and its elements.

The Art

The art style is nice; you can see how it has a very cartoony feel to it. It has an almost Tintin style to it, but it is very detailed and it helps move the story nicely. When Larry Latham draws in this style, you can see each detail on the buildings and how painstakingly each line is placed. It is beautifully illustrated, and it captures the time period very well. You can feel the raw emotion his art creates, and it gives it its own unique blend of pulp.  I love that the artist has embraced the modern age and draws directly into Photoshop and does the colors digitally. The colors are very warm, and it helps feed the mood of the story at times, depending where the hero and heroine of the story are located. I thoroughly enjoyed the pictures just as much as I did the written story.

ART: 4 STARS

The Writing

Well, I have read from first page to last, and I must say that the writing is very good. I love how it starts with the character Orwin and goes from Nan to Howard, in an attempt to delve into the mystery of the story. I enjoy that it is a period piece, and it continues to move with this mysterious disappearance of Howard and who is involved. It has that classic pulp thriller feel to it, and this was the intention of the creator. It is obvious that the creator has put a lot of thought into this, as it had intentions of being a cartoon and it sat around on different studio shelves before the creator decided to bring it to the masses himself as a web comic. Thankfully, he did not let it rot on the vine.

WRITING:  4 STARS

Originality

The story is original to say the least. This book is a period piece set within the confines of a Lovecraft story. I love how the author/creator took this book by the horns and added his own unique mix to it. I also love thinking that how the people transform reminded me of a John Carpenter movie, The Thing. There is a scene where they are meeting with a gentleman, and he transforms into this horrific monster.

This is a comic that is fun. It is a mystery and a horror story mixed together that gives you a very good story, and it keeps making you come back to check it out. I liked how we saw a few things like how the guy cut his hand off, and he was able to form a new one. I also liked how the guy suddenly turned into a nasty monster. I will say that the author knows how to show the reader that he is not afraid to shake things up a bit if he must and do it by pulling the wool over your eyes. I loved his touch when it came to pulling the reader in and then throwing you into this dark, twisted world.

ORIGINALITY: 5 STARS.

Grand Total: 4.3 Stars

The Pros

The creator of the comic has a good sense of page design, knows how to draw in the reader, and build the suspense until it erupts in mayhem. It’s nice when a creator can slowly flesh out his characters, show us their motivations, what they want to do with their lives, and then throw them against the impossible odds and have you root for them and hope they make it out alive. You can feel the raw emotion, and Larry Latham knows how to do this with a masterful grace.

The Cons

There was really no issue with the comic. There were a few panels where the lettering got really small at times, and that forced me to turn the percentage of the page up to 300%, but that only happened about six or seven times. If the book is printed, the text will be hard to read. However, that is just a minor thing. This book is simply amazing.

My Final Word

If you like drama, action, suspense, horror, and mystery then you should give this book a chance. It has a unique blend of humor and horror to make you want to read more and the creator of this series is having fun. It shows.

The comic updates regularly at:
