Comics On the Screen: MAN OF STEEL review by BRANDON EASTON
MAN OF STEEL: A Hero for the ADHD Crowd...
MAN OF STEEL was an expertly crafted movie - just like a Lego recreation of the Death Star. It is a heck of an accomplishment on a lot of levels but remains a plastic facsimile of a fictional object.
Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed 2/3rds of the movie and the problem with that is that MAN OF STEEL is incomplete. Despite a 2 hour-20 minute run time - which went by fairly quickly until the disastrous (no pun) 3rd act when the movie ceased being an actual movie and turned into a crazed video game opening sequence that lost all sense of story, plot and logic.
Now, I know not everyone went to film school, and I realize not everyone cares about things like story, plot and logic. Most folks have no idea about how and WHY movies are structured. However, I will share that the basic set-up of a screenplay is generally - not always - but generally based on a THREE ACT STRUCTURE.
In ACT ONE we meet the heroes, their friends, family, etc. A problem is introduced to their world and they must decide whether to face it or not. By the end of the first act, we have the problem, why the hero must stop or fix it, and their goal is set.
In ACT TWO things get complicated. The hero loses, and loses a lot, then the world changes so much that things cannot ever go back to the way it was. All seems lost until the hero barely escapes death. . . .

Film News: Justice League to shoot Next Year; Aiming for 2015 release
With yesterday's hearing between DC comics/WB pictures and the heirs of Superman co-creator, Joe Shuster finished...for now. It looks like WB's recent win has benefited the studio by finally green-lighting the highly delayed "Justice League" film adaptation.
From the LA Times:
"Warner hopes to shoot the film next year and release it in the summer of 2015. The studio already has a "Justice League" script in the works. Next it needs to attach a director and then cast the lead roles."
This is the first actual piece of news on the J.L. adaptation since it's last take on the iconic team, "Justice League: Mortal" was cancelled in early 2008, due to the economy in Australia (we're it was to be shot at), the 2007 Writer's Guild of America strike and that both DC and Warner wanted the script to be perfect. Mortal was to be directed by Mad Max director, George Miller and there was already a cast picked for the scrapped film.
The Cast:
D.J. Cortrona as Superman/Clark Kent
Armie Hammer as Batman/Bruce Wayne
Megan Gale as Wonder Woman/Princess Diana of Themyscira
Adam Brody as The Flash/Wally West
Hugh Keays-Byrne as Martian Manhunter/J'onn J'onzz
Teresa Palmer as Talia Al Ghul
Zoe Kazan as Iris Allen
Santiago Cabrera as Aquaman/Arthur Curry
Jay Baruchel as Maxwell Lord
Common as Green Lantern/John Stewart
From various reports when the movie was still in development, the script done by Kieran and Michelle Mulroney took elements from Justice League arcs such as Mark Waid's "Tower of Babel", in which Batman creates a back-up plan to destroy the League, should that day ever come, and Geoff John's DC crossover event, "Infinite Crisis". Crisis started in October 2005 and ended in June 2007, and it featured the character Maxwell Lord. He was not only using Superman through mind-control to take out the League, but was also using the artificial intelligence "Brother Eye" to kill all the meta-humans on earth.
It's also shows in the cast that this scrapped film was inspired by the DCAU series, "Justice League/Justice League: Unlimited", created by Paul Dini and Bruce Timm. With the recent live-action film Green Lantern and the CGI cartoon series, "Green Lantern: the Animated Series", it's most likely to assume that Hal Jordan will once again be the emerald warrior.
In regards to Ryan Reynolds reprising his role is still unknown, but with recent reports saying that this and next year's Superman reboot, "Man of Steel" will kick-start a live-action DC comics universe, expect a re-casting in the near future.
The script-writer for the current adaptation is Will Beall, the writer of the upcoming film, "Gangster Squad". Recently in June, writer Mark Millar (Kick-Ass, Old Man Logan, The Secret Service) stated that he has heard about Beall's take on the iconic team, through a good friend of his. (take a HUGE grain of salt):
"A pal of mine is good friends with the new Justice League screenwriter and said his take on the team is incredible. Very real-world and not at all what you might expect. WB has a checkered history with their superhero characters. They're great with their boy wizards, but less consistent with their DC stable. But my chum said that this could be a thing of beauty and has been in the works for a little while now, not just an Avengers knock-off. Best of luck to them. The tidbits I heard sound quite dark and mature, which isn't what I expected. But word on Gangster Squad is great too, so I feel this is in really good hands."
At the moment, DC/WB's Justice League is slated to be released in Summer of 2015 and will be competing with Marvel Studios' "The Avengers 2"

NYCC: Scott Snyder and Jim Lee headlining new Superman title
If there was one BIG announcement that came out of yesterday's DC
Comics panel, it was this one. In celebrating the boy scout's 70th
anniversary (along with the upcoming 2013 reboot "The Man of Steel"), it
was confirmed that a brand new ongoing series titled "Man of Steel"
will debut next year and that the creative team for this comic, will be
writer Scott Snyder and artist Jim Lee.
On the title fitting with the continuity & what should be expected with the debut:
"This will play along with the other Superman books in the sense that it's in continuity, but we really wanted to carve out our own territory. This really is sort of the biggest, most epic Superman story we could do together while having our feet planted firmly in continuity and making sure that everyone had enough room. For us, this is an independent book and something that will challenge Superman in a big way that's unique to our book. At the same time, I'm friends with Scott and with Andy too, so we're really excited to play alongside each other and share ideas. I think one of the interesting things about him is that Clark is always Clark. But for Superman, the thing that makes him such a strong character is that the values he grew up with and the person he was raised to be are still at the core of what makes him the most powerful superhero on earth. This isn't going to be a story where it's Clark versus Superman or seeing the two of them split. It's more about challenges for Superman that rock him to the core emotionally, psychologically, and also physically. It really is going to wind up putting him up against someone who can go blow-to-blow with him and really take him down."
Artist, Jim Lee on why he decided to team up with Snyder on 'Man of Steel':
"I would say with my Co-Publisher hat on looking into 2013, it's Superman 75th anniversary. So we wanted to do a lot of great things with Superman in the coming year and expand the number of books we put out under his name. From an artist's point of view, I always want to work with the writers I admire. I've following Scott's work on "American Vampire" where I actually did a variant for the first issue, and I followed him straight through to "Batman" where I loved the way he introduced new mythology and made it seem so seamless and like it'd been there forever. I wanted a chance to work with Scott and do it on a character like Superman where we could see what he could come up with to show us what this character is about even as we've known him for 75 years. Scott and I had a breakfast at San Diego Comic-Con, and he walked me through this story, and I was sold from that moment on."
Along with this announcement, there was also shown new artwork at the panel, for the 2013 book by Mr. [Jim] Lee.
Stay tuned later tonight for another big Superman announcement in regards to the post-Grant Morrison era of "Action Comics", from yesterday's panel.

Exclusive Comic News: The New Action Comics Creative Team!
Some big news was just released from DC's Office. So the following is the blog from DC's own blog, The Source, that tells us who will be the new creative team of Action Comics after Grant Morrison leaves:
2013 is shaping up to be a big year for Superman.
Next spring, ACTION COMICS will come to you from an all-new creative team. Beginning with issue #18, writer Andy Diggle (THE LOSERS; GREEN ARROW: YEAR ONE) and artist Tony Daniel (DETECTIVE COMICS; JUSTICE LEAGUE) will be bringing you the Man of Steel’s adventures in the acclaimed series.
“I’ve always had a positive experience working with DC Comics, and it’s amazing to be welcomed back into the fold in such fine style,” Diggle told THE SOURCE. “Even in an industry dominated by superheroes, Superman is THE superhero – the original and best - and I’m flattered, daunted and inspired in equal measure at being given the opportunity to build on such an incredible and historic legacy. The word ‘iconic’ is bandied around a lot in comics, but Superman defines the term. I’m excited to be working with Tony Daniel, whose artistic and storytelling skills will be bringing the world(s) of Superman to stunning visual life. Together we’ll be carving out spectacular new adventures that respect the past while redefining the future of the Man of Steel.”
“First, let me say that I am really excited to be working with Andy Diggle on ACTION COMICS,” continued Daniel. “Superman is a character I've wanted to work on for quite a while now and I'm now very fortunate to be given this tremendous opportunity to work with such an iconic character. I look forward to drawing each and every character in Superman's universe. I anticipate this being a fun ride for me and hopefully for Superman fans as well. I can't wait to get Andy's first script and sharpening my pencils! Thank you everyone for your support of my work on BATMAN and DETECTIVE COMICS over the years. I already miss the Dark Knight, but I look forward to starting anew with the Man of Steel in ACTION COMICS. I hope to see you all in Metropolis!”
ACTION COMICS #18 will land in stores this coming March. Stay tuned to THE SOURCE for more sneak peeks at the title, but in the meantime, take an exclusive first look below at Daniel’s promo art for ACTION COMICS.
