Comic News: Pandora Hits the stage From Fawkes & DC

During this year's Emerald City Comic Con, DC Comics announced another new title coming this June called Trinity of Sin: Pandora. Since first appearing in Flashpoint #5 back in 2011, Pandora has been staying in the shadows ... even though she was a key element that changed the DCU into the New 52. After she appeared in the New 52 # 1s and recently decided to visit Phantom Stranger, she is getting a new solo series. The new series will be written by Ray Fawkes with art by Daniel Sampere, who recently worked together in the 2 fill in issues for Batgirl.

Fawkes sat down with CBR saying this about Pandora as a character:

she's spent thousands of years crossing the globe, over and over again, hearing her name cursed for all the evils of the world. She carries this unfathomable guilt and this searing anger with her -- guilt because she may very well be responsible for all this suffering, and anger because she thinks she never had a chance to avoid unleashing it. She has reason to believe the game was fixed. So she's had all the time in the world to crawl through every kind of shame and pain and remorse you can imagine, and she's come out on the other side of it with a strong, pure sense of purpose. Is that going to lead to more trouble? Yeah, of course it is. But trouble for whom?

Trinity of Sin: Pandora promises to go through anyone and everyone in the DC Universe. The first issue by Ray Fawkes & Daniel Sampere will hit stands this June.

Comic News: Old is New Again in Starlin's Stormwatch

Announced a few weeks ago, legendary comic creator Jim Starlin is going to take over both art and writing duties for DC's Stormwatch. While many fans speculated the direction the book will good, yesterday, Starlin posted some art on his Facebook page, giving a taste of the future.

So, in all likeliness, we are gonna get to see another incarnation of Stormwatch show up, possibly replacing the current New 52 version thanks to the current multi-dimensional storyline in the book. Starlin's old character the Weird makes his New 52 debut. Classic Authority style uniforms hit Apollo & Midnighter as they come to rescue their New 52 selves alongside another Stormwatch team which includes Starlin's The Weird, Hellstrike, The Forecaster, Storm Control, Jenny Storm & alternate dimension versions of Engineer (with Midnighter and Apollo of course).

Stalin also indicated on Facebook that he's staying on Stormwatch for A LONG Time.

"I just finished writing and penciling the cover for issue #23 and am having a great time working on the title. So budget accordingly. I'm not planning on going anywhere anytime soon."

Starlin's first issue of Stormwatch hits shelves this April.

NYCC: Scott Snyder and Jim Lee headlining new Superman title

If there was one BIG announcement that came out of yesterday's DC Comics panel, it was this one. In celebrating the boy scout's 70th anniversary (along with the upcoming 2013 reboot "The Man of Steel"), it was confirmed that a brand new ongoing series titled "Man of Steel" will debut next year and that the creative team for this comic, will be writer Scott Snyder and artist Jim Lee.

On the title fitting with the continuity & what should be expected with the debut
:

"This will play along with the other Superman books in the sense that it's in continuity, but we really wanted to carve out our own territory. This really is sort of the biggest, most epic Superman story we could do together while having our feet planted firmly in continuity and making sure that everyone had enough room. For us, this is an independent book and something that will challenge Superman in a big way that's unique to our book. At the same time, I'm friends with Scott and with Andy too, so we're really excited to play alongside each other and share ideas. I think one of the interesting things about him is that Clark is always Clark. But for Superman, the thing that makes him such a strong character is that the values he grew up with and the person he was raised to be are still at the core of what makes him the most powerful superhero on earth. This isn't going to be a story where it's Clark versus Superman or seeing the two of them split. It's more about challenges for Superman that rock him to the core emotionally, psychologically, and also physically. It really is going to wind up putting him up against someone who can go blow-to-blow with him and really take him down."

Artist, Jim Lee on why he decided to team up with Snyder on 'Man of Steel'
:

"I would say with my Co-Publisher hat on looking into 2013, it's Superman 75th anniversary. So we wanted to do a lot of great things with Superman in the coming year and expand the number of books we put out under his name. From an artist's point of view, I always want to work with the writers I admire. I've following Scott's work on "American Vampire" where I actually did a variant for the first issue, and I followed him straight through to "Batman" where I loved the way he introduced new mythology and made it seem so seamless and like it'd been there forever. I wanted a chance to work with Scott and do it on a character like Superman where we could see what he could come up with to show us what this character is about even as we've known him for 75 years. Scott and I had a breakfast at San Diego Comic-Con, and he walked me through this story, and I was sold from that moment on."

Along with this announcement, there was also shown new artwork at the panel, for the 2013 book by Mr. [Jim] Lee.

Stay tuned later tonight for another big Superman announcement in regards to the post-Grant Morrison era of "Action Comics", from yesterday's panel.

TimeTravelTuesdays: A brief history of The Wildstorm Imprint(And associated comic book imprints)

So, back in the late 80s, we have Todd Mcfarlane. That name sounds familiar to you either because you're thinking "Hey that's the guy that did that Soul Calibur stuff," or you're confusing him with the guy who does Family Guy.
I'm fairly certain this is him.
So, him and his buddies were drawing Marvel comics and were like, "Dude! More Pouches!" Or something like that. And Marvel was all like "These pouch guys sell so well!" and Todd said "Hey, I want some of that pouch money" and his friend Rob just kind of sat there with this big dumb grin on his face, and Marvel just stared at them for a second and then started laughing. Like, obscenely in how much they laughed. So, Todd was all like "Not cool dude. I'll just go make pouches on my own, and it'll have Black Jack and Hookers." And so he gathered up the mightiest team of early 90s Marvel Artists and somehow got Chris Mother Fucking Claremont. And so, they formed Image, the new comic shop on the block. And they had two Provisions to their company to keep them separate from those mewling savages over at Marvel. 1) Image would not own any creator's work, the Creator would, and 2) No outside food.
We know you have outside food on you.
We have all day to search your pouches.
Now Image was a weird little thing, since Image at the start wasn't all "Invincible" and "Saga" and "The Walking Dead". It was all like "Hey, Image, is just a logo, and everyone gets to do their own thing, with their own studio, and so long as they buy their food from the concessions in the front, everything will be just groovy" Only, that was a stupid idea, and you should never give Rob Leifeld his own studio. He'll just name it Extreme Studios, and forget to feed it. But one of these studios was Wildstorm, which some accredit to the saving and only worthwhile asset to Image comics. The others really like Witchblade.
I know what you're thinking, and you're
right. This would make a good anime.
Wildstorm was Jim Lee's brainchild, and unlike Larsen who would occasionally remember to feed Highbrow Entertainment, Lee made certain that Wildstorm would only get the best of whoever thought Marvel were kind of pricks, with titles like WildC.A.T.S. and Stormwatch. And those books were criminally... okay. For the 90s. Then Jim had a great idea "I'll get that guy who just did Marvels and let him do stuff for me, under his own imprint under my imprint, under Image comics, an Imprint of Malibu comics." And so they made Homage comics, and Kurt Busiek was all like "I'mma go make-a-da-good-comics now" And Jim just kind shrugged and said "It's cool dawg" and then fist bumped him. And Terry Moore made stuff with lesbians, and James Robinson was there, but this was 90s Robinson who was hot offa doin' Star Man, not aughts Robinson, who did Gay For Justice and that recent thing with the gay Alan Scott. Basically, the only gay allowed in Wildstorm at the time was lesbians. But like, Leifeld and MacFarlane were making money, and Jim was like "How am I not makin' money? I've got trading Cards, and Pogs, and Cartoons, and I'm doing fuckin' Imprint-ception over here with Astro City and Lesbians. Fuckin' Lesbians! How dat shit not workin' dawg?" And so Todd and Rob told Jim that the secret to making great comics is throwing money at embittered comics legends who say they hate the idea of selling out but love the idea of taking money to the face like it's bukkake porn.
"I'm a legitimate artist"
And that ended up about as well as you think it did, and to ensure that Jim would never listen to their horrible advice ever again, he jumped over to DC who at this time was so rollin' in that Sandman dough that they were spending it like a NBA player 3 weeks into retirement. And then Todd was like "Oh Shit, what is Image gunna do now?" and Robert Kirkman was like "Hai Gais!" and everything was hunky dorey from then on. Then 1999 happened, and Super heroes were dark and violent and psychopathic, and just fabulous.
Pictured: The best gay characters in
comics pre Young Avengers.
And that's like, Batman and Superman, but less leather. And they're gay for each other. And I swear that Robinson had nothin' to do with it. And then Wildstorm just kind of sat there, and Jim was off drawing some Batman stuff, and some Superman stuff, but mostly Batman stuff. And there was some licensed stuff from Wildstorm, And Issue #2 of that Grant Morrison WildCats series'll come out any day now, and then in 2010 DC was all "That'll do pig" and shut down Wildstorm, and Jim Lee was like "I've got millions now bitches!" Cause he was named Co-Publisher of DC comics. And Stormwatch was made into one of those New 52 comics, and now I think Vertigo holds all the Homage comics stuff, and Alan Moore is done with Bukkake money since he's now indignant about doing stuff like that, and thinks less of creators that do, which totally doesn't make him a hypocrite, and Image comics has been successful and everyone lived happily ever after.
Especially Tony Moore
And that is all you need to know.

#40 - JUSTICE LEAGUE : ENTER DARKSEID!!

 Justice League 1-6: Enter Darkseid
Written by Geoff Johns
Penciled by Jim Lee
Inked by Scott Williams

Interview by Hector Ramirez

Rating System:
I will start with the rating system; it’s relatively simple based on Batman and his sidekicks. Jason Todd being the publics lowest rated Robin, Red Hood is the lowest rating then it goes up to Robin, Red Robin, Nightwing, and of course Batman himself. Like I said it’s simple if ever I need to rate something between the two I’ll use an obvious in between for example a 4 ½ would be a Grayson Batman. And that’s it clashers any confusion just ask in comments I do welcome feedback.

Welcome Clashers to another action packed adrenaline rush all packaged neatly into a review of the first story arc of Justice League.  They call me Hector and I’ll be your tour guide to Apokolips and back. Please, don’t feed the parademons.

So, it starts off with Batman running after one of Darkseid’s minions while also dodging Gotham’s finest then in comes a very arrogant Green Lantern by the name of Hal Jordan. After dispatching the strange alien, it drops a strange box. They discuss aliens which brings them to the subject of Superman over in Metropolis and decide to go after him. They get there; the classic misunderstanding and good guy vs. good guy fight ensues. Hal calls in the Flash for help but Batman clears up the misunderstanding. The box, which was one of many, explodes releasing parademons; as do all the others including one in S.T.A.R. labs where Victor Stone is arguing with his father for not taking his football career seriously. The blast nearly kills him so his father fits him with robotic parts turning him into Cyborg. He runs away from his father in anger and encounters parademons. He fights them and ends up teaming with our original quartet who have been joined by Aquaman and Wonder Woman.  Cyborg absorbs one of the boxes merging with its technology. Darkseid shows up and gives the league a great fight hitting Superman with an omega beam and leaving him to a parademon to be taken to Apokolips to be dissected to create a new army for Darkseid. Batman goes after Superman while the other five fight Darkseid with little avail. Superman returns knocking Darkseid back through a portal back to Apokolips and Cyborg closes it.

First off, I love the Justice League I always have and the new 52 has been phenomenal thus far this story arc is no exception. DC pulled out the big guns right off back going straight for a Darkseid fight to bring together the League.  The fights were brutal, there was action cover to cover and the art was amazing. Jim Lee is definitely no slouch and he brings a great new look to the legendary characters. I really like how the story has character development so that you know a little about each character without going too far into detail so you really want to pick up their solo titles. Overall, with a great story awesome art and a beautiful set up, this story gets the coveted Bruce Wayne Batman. That’s all for now friends. Next week, I look at IDW’s The Cape until then…. Keep Clashing!!!

THIS WEEK IN AWESOME # 4

Here we are again, Clashers. Another week and let's see what we chose for what was awesome this week:

CBC's Hector Ramirez:

My awesome moment of the week is from Justice League #5. After Superman is hit with DarkSeid’s Omega Beam the rest of the team regroup to strategize, Green Lantern says “the beams he blasts out of his eyes follow their target right?” and Wonder Woman promptly answers “It’s settled then, WE BLIND HIM!” The moment is just priceless, it catches her true warrior spirit, while at the same time displaying a sort of childlike innocence. What makes the moment that much greater is that they all go with it. This new twist on this classic team is just great and I might just have to catch up with Wonder Woman.

CBC's Darryl Carter

My epic moment comes from Nightwing #5. The last page reveals Raya, old time friend & Dick Grayson's current love interest kissing Saiko, the would-be assassin "hired" to kill Dick. Turns out Saiko is Haly's Circus Troupe's late practitioner and old friend of Dick's, Raymond. If that wasn't an "OMG" moment, I don't know what is.

CBC's EIC Frankie Rodriguez:

Honestly, it is from X-Factor # 230. I been on a real big X-book kick of late. And the final page of X-Factor # 230 made me very, VERY happy. Wolverine was offering leadership help after Madrox was seemingly dead and the rest of the team are bickering amongst themselves.Banshee and M arguing over Guido being a zombie or not. Wolfsbane not happy with Wolverine there. Rictor and Shatterstar arguing over how Wolfsbane handled things and Layla is just depressed.  Rahne and Guido immediately say who can come in here to lead X-Factor when we suddenly hear the words : " Well . . . for starters, Rahne . . . We've done it before. And Guido . ..  nice hair cut. "
I weep openly with a large smile. For the first time since in 10 years, Havok & Polaris were back on X-Factor. And DEAR GOD . . . THAT IS AWESOME!!

THIS WEEK IN AWESOME # 3

Welcome again Ladies & Gentlemen to THIS WEEK IN AWESOME!!!

For this edition . . . we got our staffers and a little more this week.

CBC's Hector Ramirez

My awesome moment this week comes from Daredevil #8. Daredevil is tracking down a powerful hologram generator and when he finds it the thieves attempt to use it against him by filling the room with holographic villains stating “you can’t catch what you can’t see” Daredevil merely smiles and the next panel shows the too men in a slump on the floor.

J1 Studios' Brian Misher

My favorite moment is in Rosario+Vampire Season II vol.6 & 7. In vol. 6, Moka Akashia had Tsukune remove the rosario from her neck for a full day, allowing her true vampire self to experience school life first hand. Unfortunately, this causes to seal to weaken and Inner Moka can't be sealed away again.

I like this moment because it thrusts the normally stoic Inner Moka into a situation that has become almost become alien to her. Her friends get to see her in a different light than what they're used to. Usually Inner Moka has a rough exterior and chilling demeanor, and is often times very frightening. As vol. 6 progressed, Inner Moka begins to display "girly" qualities such as particpating in sports, art, and joining cooking class where she receives some harsh criticism and reacts accordingly--feeling depressed. In the end, Inner Moka smiles almost just as bright as her cheery counterpart when Tsukune approves of a pie she made despite its burnt appearance. I really like this part because Inner Moka shows extreme concern for Tsukune when he nearly chokes on the first piece when normally she just pay him no mind.

Vol. 7 furthers upon this as Inner Moka, while on a plane bound for China with her friends, wonders about her feelings toward Tsukune. This may be due to the fact that when Tsukune sees her without her shirt, Moka, rather than kicking him, simply covers his eyes.

CBC'S Darryl "YTC" Carter

My epic moment of the week also comes from the pages of Barry Allen in the Flash #3. The Flash can vibrate his molecules at a certain frequency to become intangible. In other words he can phase through objects a la Shadowcat. Sure. The Flash can hold grasp something living or otherwise, accelerate its molecules to a particular frequency and render it intangible as well? Sure, sure. But a whole passenger plane equipped with people and luggage? Through a BRIDGE...? Impressive Barry... impressive. But wait there's more... All this is only after Barry finds out he can tap into the Speed Force... with his brain...

Derrick Jones of  Brooklyn, NY

As much as I bad mouth Jim Lee nowadays...in his hey day. X-men issue 275. The X-Men most in their School Uniforms Vs. The Imperial Guard. All the looks had been updated and the battle (esp. the two page splash page) was great! Darn...I miss a kinetic Jim Lee.

Gerald Williams of Hampstead, NY

The awesome moment that I always remember is the Universo Project from Legion of Super-Heroes vol 3, #32-35. Universo had taken control of the entire universe but he exiled Saturn Girl, Dream Girl, Brainiac 5 and Chameleon Boy on a planet with other heroes (non-legionnaires) who he considered a danger to him. They escaped and in #35 Saturn Girl took on Universo alone but he had Mon-El and Ultra Boy there as bodyguards. She reached into their minds, broke his hold on them and dropped in 2 seconds. Then made light work of Universo. It is still my favorite LSH story after all these years.

CBC DCnU SPECIAL # 1 - What we thought of JUSTICE LEAGUE #1

With the historic relaunch of DC Comics now underway, we took some time out this week to give you all a look at some of the views on the new Justice League #1 by people throughout the country. Here are some opinions, as well as opinions from members of the CBC crew. So, sit back, relax and read on. Please NOTE, the following statements will contain spoilers.

From CBC’s own Hector Ramirez:

Well, I just picked up my copy of Justice League #1 last weekend I can say I was rather impressed. Decent art, good story, tremendous ending. I love how they started out with the heroes as unknown vigilantes that didn’t even trust each other. The cops were going full force against all costumes it was awesome. One thing I hated was Hal friggin’ Jordan!!! He was such an arrogant prick and what up with him talking in third person. Those last few pages were priceless that red blue and green blur when Clark knocked Hal down a few pegs and the last page revealing his new costume, loved it!!!

D. Jones from NYC

I read JL #1 Ehhhh I was a little underwhelmed. I cant remember who it was in one of the other post who said that it should have been an 80 page special but yes, it should have been. I know the new thing is to make the story last over 5-6 issues so it fits easily in TPB but if you are really introducing these characters for the first time it felt like you relied to much on my past knowledge of them. . . . I said earlier that for the flagship book it should have been longer. It's got nothing to do with trying to show the differences between characters or anything, it has to do with taking forever to tell a story. And . . .  it does seem that many writers have a very 1950's mindset when it comes to speaking to kids which i never understand cause these little mofo's are WAY more advance than us

D. Franklin from Baltimore, MD

Yeah, I expected more from a debut issue. There were some neat moments, like GL scoffing at Batman's lack of powers and then Batman proving him wrong. But it def would have benefited from more pages and story!

C. Smith from Michigan

Sure . . . Batman and Hal have always had their clashes in ideology . . .  for this to be the flagship book that's launching a new universe that you desperately need to be accepted, there should have been more. You can't even use the argument that the price point would be too high. It was the second of only 2 books that came out this week for the company. . . The story was so color by numbers it should have been in the activities aisle in Toys R Us. It was entirely cliche and below the standards of the industry today. If they were going for an all-ages feel, then, this would have been just fine. Maybe that was the intended goal. However, kids are a lot more advanced than writers want to credit.  . . If they wanted this story to have teeth and justify the pacing, and also add needed characterization without the need of dialogue, we should have seen the entire arrival of the parademons. Batman in shadow reacting to the event. Green Lantern doing the same and then their crossing paths. You would have established suspense. You could have shown just how Batman is perceived as myth by him working in shadow, barely seen through most of the comic until the end. I'm really beginning to question if Geoff Johns is just burnt out. His writing has been subpar of late.

G. Williams from New York

Justice League is interesting, but I'm a bit guarded about it since it is starting 5 years ago as well as restarting Cyborg without him joining the Titans first. Of what I see of the costumes so far, I have no objection. Batman fits him and his personality. Superman's is okay but I am confused about why they choose to make it armor. I feel that it may simply be for effect. I think that it will take a few months until we get acclimated to the new personalities of these characters. We have been reading them for so long but it is DC's goal to shake things up so that it will open new stories for them.

And Finally, CBC Head - Frankie "Seraph" Rodriguez:

I have to admit that this was by far one of the better debut issues. I honestly did not find anything wrong with it. It helped show us a little of this new universe and how things started. The interplay between Batman and Hal Jordon was priceless. The fact that they were only 2 of the 7 members to be featured in the book having a lot of screen time did not bother me at all. It actually helped us established who these characters are at this point and time.
With super heroes just starting to rise, it set up a lot for us to come with the big bad being mentioned, the beginning of Cyborg's origin and how Batman and Green Lantern meet Superman . . . which leads directly to the next issue.
I think it was a fast read . . . not too short. It gave readers enough to be intrigued and entertained while giving us some basic outlooks on the characters, personalities and setting up for the formation of the league, Cyborg's origin and the League's first big bad. Lee and Williams gave a tour de force in terms of art. It has never looked better. And to everyone who is whining about the costumes . . . Look at Superman at the last page of JL #1 and tell me he did NOT look awesome . . .and I will call you a liar.
A great beginning for Johns and Lee.

And that is all the opinions this week. Next week . . .we will cover all 12 books of the DCnU with our opinions and the opinions of you, the fans all over the country.
