Marvel NOW 1st Impression: Deadpool #1

FIRST IMPRESSION

MARVEL NOW

DEADPOOL #1
Written by Gerry Duggan & Brian Posehn
Art by Tony Moore
Colors by  Val Staples

Review by Broken Infinite EIC Himself, Frankie Rodriguez

 INTRODUCTION:

So yeah. Deadpool. Marvel's undead whore. Well, he's not undead but he kind of is. More or less, Daniel Way had closed out the run on the character and that Deadpool book ended. Deadpool, the Merc with a Mouth ... who got that moniker cause he could not shut up ... REALLY, he can't. His own inner monologue is loud.

He debut back in the early 90s in the penultimate issue of the first volume of New Mutants as well as the first Volume of X-Force and was a creation of Rob Liefield. After some time, the Merc with a Mouth struck a cord with people that he ended up with his own mini series. Then had more minis. Then his own ongoing ... three times ... one of them with Cable from the aforementioned X-Force.

What we seem to get is that there is a weird balancing act between him being a deadly merc and his own brand of comedy. Oh ... Deadpool slept with  Banshee (aka Siryn aka Teresa Cassidy) on more than one occasion.  Why did I mention that? Cause it is a fun fact and it's freaking Deadpool.

  Anyway, on to the show.

FLIPPING THROUGH:

We start with a ... Satanic SHIELD agent raising a zombi-fied Harry S. Truman, one of the former Presidents of the United States, out of his grave. He said he did it to put this country back into shape. WHAT?

You raise the dead cause you don't like the politicians of this era and you want the country to get better? How absurd. That's just . .. *thinks about it for a minute*

Anyway, who should arrive but Captain America. Yep. Not Deadpool. But Cap.We find that SHIELD has intel that more than just Truman is out of his grave and they don't want the Avengers beating up Undead Presidents.

Yes. I said that correctly. Beat  up zombi-fied dead presidents. We then see our star, cutting through the guts of a giant lizard monster ...

Oh my god.

   DEADPOOL'S KILLED GODZILLA!!!

   ONORE!!!!

*pauses & calms down*

Anyway, after having a "secret" team up with Thor ... who is acting like they had a bad one night stand he never wants to have be known by the public (like the people you see in "Cheaters" or down low men), Deadpool is hired by SHIELD to quietly take down the former Presidents.

Let me repeat that.  DEADPOOL ... is hired to take down zombi-fied presidents of the US . ..  QUIETLY.

Well, this will not end well. After an interesting battle with FDR, Deadpool's chase leads him to Independence Hall and ....I'm not telling you the rest.

ART:

Tony Moore brings his wonderful a game into this book. Deadpool looks really messed up ... like always but I think this time really highlights that Wade is a living zombie look with flesh on him that is healing ... all the time. Cap and thorn looked like the larger than life heroes they are. The areas were well drawn.
Val Staples' colors are really vivid but fit the moods and settings of the seen. Moore's pencils and inks are enhanced well by Staples' color work.

  Really, a great look book.

WRITING:

Let me get this out of the way. I don't really read Deadpool much. The last two Deadpool issues I picked up were a part of Cable & Deadpool, written by Fabian Niceaza, and were tie ins to Civil War. So, this is out of my comfort zone. And I will say, I liked it but I didn't love it.

Duggan and Posehn have great comedic timing and it shows with Wade and the Dead Presidents. Irony, puns and physical comedy all utilized well. But there are a couple issues I had with this first issue:

As a jump on point it works but there feels to a disjointed feel to this issue. The serious scenes in this a few and while important, felt a bit shoehorned in. The book definitely has this tv pilot feel to it. It opens with a bang, we get the main character, we get into the new status quo and the plot of the story with it ending in a cliffhanger that is perfect for taking a commercial break.

And while that is good, this is still comic book and there felt like the disjointed scenes mixed with some odd choices for gags (THERE IS NO EXCUSE EVER TO JUSTIFY US SEEING DEADPOOL'S ASS! SERIOUSLY! READERS DO NOT NEED TO SEE WADE'S FLESH TORN & SCARRED ASS! EWWWWWW) So the tv style set up kinda of worked for it and worked against it too.

OVERALL IMPRESSION:

The book is fun. The book is insane. The plot is interesting yet crazy enough that it feels the comedic side of Deadpool. But what irks me is that while I understood the politics of choosing Deadpool, I am not sure as to why they are having Deadpool do it ALONE. That just seems to make less sense. Sure he's got SHIELD agents going with him but I still think that this was odd that Deadpool was their only heavy hitter on the job.

Moore and Staples make a great art team. It is great to look at. And everyone looks distinct . You can't mix up characters here and it is a more unique style.

Writing wise, it seems that there seems to be lack of balance still between Deadpool's deadly Merc Persona and his comedic rantings. Still, Duggan and Poshen make this an enjoyable read. Yet, it does not make me go "OH MY GOD! I NEED THE NEXT ISSUE."

I give Deadpool #1 a 3 out of 5. A Decent start to what could be a good storyline but ... still on the fence about getting next issue and my other points. Still, a fun read.

Broken Infinite Invades Philly Comic Con & I Almost Kill Stan Lee

PHILLY COMIC CON REPORT

by Frankie Rodriguez (Seraph)

Welcome one and all. Tis I, Frankie Rodriguez. New site. New day.  And boy, much has happened since we last talked. To my Clashers, be not afraid. Comic Book Clash has evolved. THIS is the next stage. The next Evolution. Read all our usual quality stuff and enjoy the ENTIRE BROKEN INFINITE site. ALL OF IT. But after you read this. This past weekend, I had the pleasure of covering the 4-Day event. Yep. This year, it was 4 days. Normally,it's 3 but some new management and some pretty awesome guests changed all that. Who were the guests you ask?

Let see: We had Chris Helmsworth . ..Thor himself in the flesh (but only on Saturday).

We had legendary wrestlers: Ted Dibiase, Amy Dumas (aka Lita), Jimmy Hart, Diamond Dallas Page & Paul Bearer.  Not to mention current WWE Champion himself (and known comic book enthusiast) CM PUNK!

We had Dean Cain, Melissa Joan Hart, James Marsters & all 5 .. count 'em 5, STAR TREK CAPTAINS.

WE EVEN HAD STAN LEE. (How I almost killed him later.)

Arriving early, I had picked up my press pass and was able to walk in during the end of set up for the con Thursday Afternoon. The new set up was amazing. Instead of the normal two halls, they opened up 3 full halls just for the con while the forth was used for registration, lines and tickets. (Excellent move there Wizard)  Watching the set up made me feel the positive energy.  I looked at the line of VIP who were ready to get in as I walked up to a female volunteer when I asked her, "So, what do you think of the set up and this year's con going to look?" The volunteer replied, "I been here for several years and this year just seems so much better. It looks bigger, it feels bigger ... just feels like its gonna be a great con."   After walk around taking some pictures, the VIP entered as they passed by the Zenescope and Avatar tables on the red carpet.

The vast convention space was well utilized as there were areas for stars that split the normal commerce areas while the vast majority of the stars were nestled in the center of the con;which I personally dubbed Red Carpet Row since red carpet went up nearly to all the areas where each of the celebs were stationed. Past Red Carpet Row, there were more merchants and Artist Alley, which was HUGE this year. So many artists. From local and indy artists like Shawn Alleyne, Inkbot.net & Interrobang Studios to known comic professionals such as  Miguel Sepulveda (of Stormwatch fame), Jamal Igle (who I interviewed a few months back), Greg Horn and legendary artist Neal Adams. While talking to several independent artists, I was able to get their business cards and close the day with meeting up with my friend and Broken Infinite writer Hector Ramirez. My friend and Hector were both in extremely jovial moods.

Then Day Two happened. And Dear Lord. For the first time in years, if ever, Friday had a turn out that was almost as good as a Saturday turn out. Many of the celebrities had arrived (such as Anthony Michael Hall, James Hong and the aforementioned Legendary wrestlers). The fans were jovial. Artists were working hard on commissions or keep attention to customers. Parents were walking their children around the many merchants with clothing, comics and swords. (Yes. SWORDS) There was even LIQUOR up in this con. Liquor! As I saw my friend, we noticed George Perez and decide to take the time to get him to sign a book, just to take a break. And after an hour and a half (and an personal apology from Perez himself), I got to talk to George Perez. As a journalist and a fan, I was estatic. He signed my New Teen Titans (Vol. 1) # 6 and I asked him how he was enjoying the con.

"Oh. I am having a great time," replied Perez.

In my mind, I was squealing like a 12 year old girl in joy. In person, I had a big smile as my friend took a picture of George Perez and I. (I have idolized this man for 20 years. He is why I am doing this now.) After living that moment, I was able to observe the Jedi Master Class then went on my way to lunch with same friend as earlier. As we walked out the door, Dean Cain was just coming back from his panel ... stopped my  friend (who was ex-military and wore his dogtags) and introduced himself. My mouth dropped (Superman stopped us to talk to my friend) then I shook his hand. He was not able to take time  at the moment to really talk but he thanked my friend for his service and wished us well.  After a picture with my friend that I took. (Lucky punk.)

After lunch and looking at I checked out the Stan Lee photo op, just to hear fan reactions. Stan Lee, 89 years old, was a HUGE draw as the line started about an hour before his photo op. Fans were going on about ... between some complaining about the wait ... to others who were just happy to be there and get this chance with him. One fan stated, "I never thought I would get this chance but here I am. I am  gonna meet Stan Lee!" The line for Stan Lee moved quickly and I moved on to talk with a few more artists and cover some panels. (more on those later) I actually ran into a lovely Wonder Woman cosplayer.  She smiled as I asked her for a picture. She had told me that some people had complained about her costume while I said that I thought she did a great job. What do you think?

Saturday rolled by as the con was jammed. People were everywhere. I tried several times to talk with Greg Capullo but the line was far too long and was not able to get to speak to him. The Chris Helmsworth panel was fun with a lot of people going on how they enjoyed his Thor while he answered questions. At one point, I ran into my friend again and we were gonna head to lunch. As I talked to him about what were gonna eat ... I was pulled away in a 45 degree angle. Mere seconds later  .  . . MERE SECONDS ... I see  Stan Lee say excuse me. If that bodyguard or whoever pulled me back didn't stop me, I would have crashed into Stan Lee. STAN LEE IS 89 years old.

 I ALMOST KILLED STAN LEE.

If I had crashed into him, I would have become American's most hated man. Comic Fanboys would have wanted blood.  I almost walked into Stan Lee. Me hitting him could have killed him ... THANK GOD I DIDN'T WALK INTO STAN LEE. (Mr. Lee, if you are reading this ... I am so sorry)

After that and a late lunch, I calmed down, I had gone to Artist Alley and talked with Shawn Alleyne, local Philadelphia artist, to ask him about the con. "This is good. Been keepin' busy. I been doing well, selling prints," said the artist. "This year seems so much better than last year," he stated after I asked him what he thought of the convention. After talking with some cosplayers and retailers and getting Miguel Sepulveda's autograph, it was time to call it a night.

Final day had arrived. I had overslept so I missed Stan Lee Q & A (FRELL) but I was able to look around at some deals and attend another panel (Writing & Editing in Comics - that will come up in another post) and pretty much talk with creators, enjoying the rest of the con. The con ending with a high note as many con goers left with smiles and a great sense of satisfaction. And while the Big Two (although DC artists Greg Capullo, Miguel Sepulveda and more were there) and Dynamite Entertainment were noticeably absent this year, there was much fun from many of the fans, creators and even staff. With that, It is time for me to get on the TARDIS and see if I can catch Stan Lee's Q&A. Till then, Break the cycle and take it all in.

AVENGERS VS X-MEN BATTLE REPORT #4

AVENGERS VS X-MEN BATTLE REPORT #4

Written by Hector Ramirez & Frankie Rodriguez

Uncanny X-Men #12

Namor vs. The Thing have their round 2 as an adventure to Tabula Rasa, where Namor seemingly rides his Sea Queen lover and flirts with Hepzibah. Sunspot gets knocked around.

Wolverine & the X-Men  #10

The Jean Grey School gets a visit ... from Cyclops, Emma & Magik. And for the faculty of the JGS, the Avengers vs. X-Men battle became that much more personal as sides were about to be taken. Plus, Angel and Evan deal with wanting to confront their pasts together. Oh yeah! Iceman vs. Red Hulk.

Avengers #26

  Thor vs. The Phoenix  . . . round 2!!

New Avengers # 26

The story of the Iron Fist Phoenix continues. Master Yu Ti brings Leonardo Da Vinci to the Immortal City to observe the phenomenon of the Phoenix and the training of Fongji. During the training, Fongji has a Phoenix outburst making them realize it was close. Fongji receives the power of the Iron Fist just in time. Da Vinci builds a huge super telescope and sees the Phoenix approaching Earth. No Avengers vs. X-Men fights to mention.

AvX: Versus # 2

We got Spidey vs Colossanaut and Captain America vs. Gambit. No plot in this issue Captain America is ambushed in the Savage Land by Gambit while on the phone with Tony. Gambit tries his hardest to take out Cap, doing his most damage when he sparks up Cap’s uniform then his shield but when the smoke clears Steve is still standing and bashes Remy’s face in with his shield…… K.O.!!! Next, we go to Latveria where the Avengers all choose their opponents leaving Spiderman to take on Colossus in full Juggernaut mode. Peter vs. Piotr. Of course, Spidey is all jokes while being tossed around like a rag doll. At one point, it seemed as though the wall crawler was going to immobilize the Colosonaut but he broke out of the webbing and was about to pummel the web slinger before he was saved by Daredevil came to tell him they found Hope, Piotr winner by default.

Avengers vs X-Men  Round 4

Hope finds Logan in Antarctica and gets him to help her get to the Moon to receive the Phoenix. Meanwhile, she has Avengers and X-Men alike running around on a wild goose chase looking for her in bogus locations. When, they get to the moon both teams are waiting. This issue had many fights portrayed in single panels with no clear winners except Captain America defeating Gambit unless you count Cyclops getting Wolverine with a cheap shot on the moon.

AvX BATTLE RESULTS

Spidey vs. Colossanaut      Winner: Colossanaut

Captain America vs. Gambit      Winner: Captain America ... and pretty damn easily.

The Thing vs. Namor (Round 2)    Winner: Namor

Thor vs. The Phoenix      Winner: The Phoenix  but barely. Wait ... What?

INJURY LIST:

Spidey's got to be feeling sore and some cracked ribs taking shots from Piotr.

Captain America must feel some kind of burn from Gambit cause his suit and shield exploded.

Gambit got a face full of HOT Shield so probably gonna feel that when he wakes up.

Wolverine's injuries heal up but damn if Scott didn't make him feel it.

Thor proves himself the God of Thunder he is by surviving and almost beating the Phoenix only to get more burns.

Namor might have a sea STD from Alien Sea Queen. Ewwww

Sunspots face and body must be aching at least from those blows.

NOTES

- Logan helping Hope. Did NOT expect that one.

- Cap and Scott are being very much the generals that they were molded to be.

- This is getting pretty crazy with all these battles.

- It was interesting which of JGS staff went with Scott.

- First act is almost over.

Comics on the Screen: THOR (2011)

Editor: Jeremias de Leon

For today's review for Comic Book Clash's "Avengers Month", I'm taking a look at a movie that (before The Avengers was released) was my favorite from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. That film is the 2011 Fantasy/Sci-Fi Epic, Thor.

Based off the comic of the same name created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, 2011's Thor was written by Ashley Edward Miller, Zack Stentz and Don Payne with story credits going to J. Michael Straczynski and Mark Protosevich, and the director of the film was Kenneth Branagh.

The film starts off with a short montage showing both Thor and Loki's Origins, from their childhoods to adulthood, we come to see that even though their not related, they do act brotherly to one another.  We then cut to Thor, now as a adult (played by Chris Hemsworth) preparing to ascend to the throne of Asgard, until a group of frost giants try to retrieve the casket from Odin's vault which contains the Tesseract (the cosmic cube int this universe). and they failed. Thor wants to confront Laufery and the frost giants abbot this incident on their realm, Jotunheim. Odin forbids this, but that doesn't faze Thor, Loki, Sif nor the Warriors Three (Volstagg, Fandral and Hogun).

They proceed to the realm where the frost giants live, and due to a remake that Laufery utters, a fight insures. As this fight progresses on, it looks like they were  at death's door until Odin intervenes and tries to play peacekeeper between the two races, however due to the god of thunder's arrogance that treaty between the two races was broken. Due to that arrogance, Odin strips his son's godly powers from him and banishes him to Midgard (our realm in the Marvel universe) to learn of Humility.

This films cast (excluding a couple due to some changes) was one that felt like it was literally taken out of the source material. Hemsworth's portrayal of the god of thunder was perfect, from the start of the film he was naive but as the film progressed you felt that he's matured due to his interaction with the humans on earth.

Tom Hiddleston as Loki was one of THE best portrayal on a comic film to date. He's a villain down to a T, but he's a simpifectic one and understand why as the films plot progresses, you understand his character and why he's takes these courses of action.

Not only does Sir. Anthony Hopkins' Odin brings some class to the film, but he's a King at not only thinks of Asgard's best intentions but for his son(s) as well.

The others that portray their respective roles (Stellan Skarsgard, Idris Elba, Colm Feore, Ray Stevenson, Tadanobu Asano, Joshua Dallas, Jaimie Alexander and Rene Russo) are great additions to the film. However, the one I personally fell that was highly miscast as Jane Foster was Natalie Portman and Kat Dennings as Darcy Lewis.

While Dennings was their for harmless padding in the comedic tense, I personally felt that while Natalie Portman as Jane Foster is the generic love interest in mainstream comics. Portman's portrayal comes off as both whiney, shallow and pedantic. Another reason why I disliked Ms. Portman's portrayal was the exhale in the character's background from her being originally a paramedic to an astrophysicist. I understand and acknowledge why they changed the character's backing to mesh with the films plot, but to a long-term Marvel zombie it may feel weird.

The score, done by Patrick Doyle was amazing. The tone and ominous flows wonderfully with the movie's fantasy element and with the contemporary earth setting. Even listening to it solely  is an experience of its own.

The director of Thor, Kenneth Branagh was one of Marvel's best choices they made due to his Shakespearian background. He really brought out the feeling for both respective realms and also makes both Asgard and Jotunheim look awe-inspiring.

In closing, though The Avengers is now my personal favorites in the Cinematic Universe. Thor is still a close favorite of mine. From the plot, to the characterization of each actor/actress in this film is a mush see!

RATING: 4.5/5

SECOND OPINION by Jeremias de Leon

It was really, really, really, good. Natilie Portman's hot, Thor's Cool and some Frost Giants die. EPIC! I highly reccomend this film to anyone.

RATING: 5/5

WHAT YOU & WE THOUGHT OF AVENGERS!!!!

Here are thoughts of The Avengers live action movie that has premiere this past weekend. We got stuff from fans and CBC staff so let's get down to it.

Jeremy Jones

Ever had one of those kitchen let downs? Y'know, when what's cooking smells so yummy but when you finally tuck in, it's mediocre. Not bad exactly, just not as good as it's scent set-up.
Marvel Studio's Avengers movie, released May 4th, is the exact opposite of a kitchen let down; the film was everything a fanboy could have hoped for, a veritable piece de resistance of comics-translated-to-the-big-screen movie magic. The promise made by Iron Man I&II, Thor, and Captain America movies over the last few years have herein been fulfilled.
Let's keep it to three reasons why Avengers was so satisfying. Director Joss Whedon also wrote the screenplay; the resulting singularity of creative vision makes a powerful, sturdy framework upon which to lay dynamic, toothsome special effects. The overall writing finesse and depth of characterization is brilliant and engaging.

There was no need for distracting backstory filler, often a failing of comic book movies, as the non-comic reading movie public must be brought up to speed. Avengers avoids the backstory baggage thanks to the four previous solo movies and we get right down to business; the pot is hot at the jump and the aromatic ingredients simply sizzle.

With strong acting in the mix, this trifecta of movie magic is complete. For the most part, the main characters are adroitly portrayed, with verve, and even secondary characters like Maria Hill shine. Just a bit of Samuel L. Jackson showed through Nick Fury, otherwise, only the character was on screen, the actors disappeared as they should, perfectly: you believe.
Avengers gets a well earned 9.5 of 10 stars.

If this movie was a meal, at its end you would've burped embarrassingly loudly then refused dessert.

CBC's Hector Ramirez

Avengers is the talk of the weekend and with great reasoning. Now naturally, I had to see it in imax 3D and I am glad I did. The graphics were great really worked with the 3d well. The story didn't have many holes in it. Of course, they had them quarrel amongst each other which you know fans wanted to see. When everyone starts working together, they really compliment each other well on the battlefield. The comedic element was a nice touch and catch phrases we will all be repeating for months to come. But speaking of catchphrases one very important catchphrase left unsaid: "Avengers Assemble" but due to the overall success, i'll let that slide. I will be listening for it in the sequel.

Derrick JonesLet me start off with I really like Joss Wheadon’s television work. I was a faithful watcher of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, dollhouse, and Firefly. I can even see his hand in some of the story line as the movie plays out. Having said all that I was not the biggest fan of The Avengers movie.

At times I feel the movie is trying to be too much to too many and falling short at every turn. It’s a buddy movie, except when it’s not, then it’s a romantic comedy (or a bromatic comedy) but then it shifts to pure eye candy action. For a movie that is just this side short of two hours and thirty minutes I felt like for the first hour and forty minutes of the movie I was in a sports car that was towed onto the street and pulled along until finally it was cut lose from the truck and allowed to hit speed.

All the actors played their parts well Robert Downey Jr. still manages to bring an unlikeable arrogant Tony Stark to the screen and Chris Evans, who annoyed the hell out of me in the Fantastic Four films, plays a really believable man out of time Captain America. For me however the runaway star of the movie is Mark Ruffalo as the third and best Bruce Banner. While I am familiar with the comic version of the Black Widow I would not mind seeing her in her own movie, but again I have to give props to Josh Wheadon (yeah Scarlett also ) for the writing of a female character that is not all victim or pure fem fatale bitch. In the end I would give this movie 3 out of 5 stars.

CBC's Darryll "YTC" Carter

Aside from my sister somewhat ruining the end of the movie for me (that's why I don't go out with familly) Joss Whedon pulled it off. And I'm glad he did though. I, myself, didn't walk away with the experience I was expecting the rest of the world seems to think I should have and would have if my sister wasn't present. That being said I feel like the movie was too Stark and Widow heavy. I expected the movie to focus on Downey and Iron Man a bit heavily and while it wasn't outlandish it was noticable to me. Alot of people disagree with me, saying "No way man it was the Hulk" or "naw, it was Thor". I'm speaking more so about screentime not who got the most badass moment. But speaking of badass moments I felt like Black Widow did more in the film than Captain America. And that bothers me. Cap bias aside, he is Captain fing America the leader. He did shine as a leader though once everyone began to cooperate, namely Stark and Thor and surprisingly the Hulk. Though I wager there isn't much for the Hulk to complain about when his orders are "Hulk.... Smash." Priceless.

J1 Studios' Brian Misher

Just saw with some friends this morning. ABSO-FREAKING-LUTELY AWESOME!!! I will be seeing this twice!

Christian Prokop aka Mildra the RPG Monk

Saw Avengers the other day. The monk approves.

Deandra McFadden

Omg! I love this movie. If you haven't seen this movie, go watch it now.

CBC's Frankie Rodriguez

This movie is beyond Epic. Beyond Awesome. This movie is exactly what it needs to be: Well paced, great characterizations and mind-breaking battles. This movie proves all the build up of the Marvel Movies continuity works and works well. And all the characters were very well balanced in this movie. No one over-shines anyone else in the film, in my opinion.

There are more than enough memorable moments, the pacing is excellent and the characters are all distinct and fleshed out well. Captain America is a god! And honestly, Mark Ruffalo is the best  Bruce Banner ever to hit a screen, tv or movie. Such a multi-layered portrayal and the movie was just full of Whedon full but not overly full of pop-culture references. Kids will love it. Adults will love it. Just ... amazing work.

Countdown: Top 10 Avengers

by Darryll YTC Carter

Two weeks ago I posted my top 10 mutants showing the people I'm rooting for during the Avengers vs X-Men event. This time its the Avengers' turn. Let's get to it.

Captain America

Without any contest remotely, Cap is my number one Avenger. I mean…. He’s Cap. He earned my respect from the pages of the Ultimates back in my high school days. I’m pro-American and Cap is as pro-America as it gets (before it becomes unhealthy or just racist). He is pure American everything that we should be. Everything that any self respecting and aspiring hero wants to be.  Then there is the shield. He’s surgical with that thing. Not to mention till this day he’s the only man I’ve seen literally walk up to the Hulk and just slug him one.

 Hulk

If you would have seen me when I first saw the Incredible Hulk or maybe the time I saw the Hulk jump out of a nuclear explosion, you would know my appreciation for the Hulk is borderline orgasmic. That’s right I swoon folks, swoon when I see the Hulk go on his rampages and exert his power and the devastation it relinquishes upon the battlefield or an unsuspecting alien’s face. “Hulk Smash!” = Me happy.

Spider-Man

Good ole Parker. My favorite superhero tied for first place with none other than Bruce Wayne himself. He’s got the jokes, he’s got the smarts and he had the girl… redhead that is. She’ll be back again don’t even worry about it Pete. We’ll be okay. We’ll be okay… Maybe you can hook up with Patty Spivot, she looks a lot like your recent ex, especially since she wants nothing to do with Flash.

Scarlet Witch

Mmmm, Wanda. I said why I liked her in the Mutant countdown and interestingly enough she clutches the #4 spot again. I like her enough that she appears on both lists. Here’s an excerpt from the Mutant countdown on Wanda:

Often viewed as the favorite child of Magneto, Scarlet Witch is a top tier mutant not to be trifled with. Scarlet Witch manipulates probability fields and reality via her hexes. While she has been deemed unstable on more than one fair occasion, Wanda once firmly warmed a seat in the Avengers alongside her love, Vision. To put into perspective just how powerful Wanda is, I only need to mention House of M. Don’t know what that is? Google it or go buy it. Man I love women with power.

Valkyrie

Valkyrie is pretty much what I’d go for if I were a superhero. Like Wanda she is a mesh of power and beauty. Besides riding shotgun and being the resident strongman for the first version of the Secret Avengers she has a very poetic and archaic way with words. And who doesn’t like a girl who can wield a big ass sword. Ring Ring. Hello? Valk, it’s for you. Cloud wants his buster sword back.

Iron Man

Tony Stark would probably have been number three or four on this list before Civil War went down. While his side did come up on top, we all know he regrets the brunt of his actions. Downey and the Iron Man films saved Tony for me. Saved him from the abyss he was doomed for in my mind. That said, Its hard to hate the guy. It is like really hard. You have to try. Like discover a new element try.

Black Widow

     Scarlett Johansson.

She Hulk

Banner’s cousin Jennifer Walters; experienced and great lawyer by day, big green, sexy, muscle pounding machine by choice. The beauty of She Hulk’s character is that she chooses to be She Hulk. She’s in perfect control of her transformation, thanks to the opposite effect it had on her as opposed to her cousin.

Wasp

I’m not sure how to explain how or why I like the wasp. Is it that I like the Wasp or is it that I like what happened to the Wasp? Vague? I’ll explain. In the Ultimates, the Wasp was married to Hank Pym, Giant Man, who also happened to be abusive. One day after an argument he decided to spray her with some bug spray and have his mind controlled ant army ravage her. (Not like that…) They roughed her up a bit… a lot. Cap handled that nasty business. I’ve always thought that was an amazing writing choice. To put that in there. A hot head hero, who abuses his mutant wife, who can shrink down to the size of an insect and sprout wings, with bug spray. It was near genius.

Thor

“By Odin’s beard!” That’s pretty much the extent of my appreciation. LMAO. Who says that? Thor, that’s who. Oh and Mjolnir. It doesn’t take much to please me folks.

THIS WEEK IN AWESOME #7

Another week, an other look at the things that made this week Awesome.

Darryl "YTC" Carter

My Epic Moment come from the motion comic Thor Loki: Blood Brothers. The writers of that thing managed to tell a tale and present a scenario that painted Loki as an unfortunate, neglected child that was dealt a raw hand by destiny. It made me like Loki. I wanted Loki to beat Thor. Whatever Loki had in mind I wanted him to win. That’s crazy.

Hector Ramirez

This week, my Epic Moment comes from Fantastic Four #604. Adult Franklin Richards is fighting 3 Celestials as Nathaniel explains to Reed how Although Galactus had many heralds, Franklin only had one. Then Franklin screams RISE! RISE TO ME MY GALACTUS and revives Galactus. That ... was . . . awesome.

Frankie Rodriguez

Honestly,  my epic moment this week is from Justice League of America: Rise of Eclipso storyline. The fact that Eclipso does everything he does in that storyline (see my review of it this week) just so that he can KILL GOD. The explanations. The battles. It really proved that incarnation of the JLA but the one moment that made me scared to the point where I was screaming "Oh my God!" outloud was when Eclipso .. . after KILLING The Spectre .. .  SPLITS THE MOON IN HALF! THE MOON!!!!

COMICS ON THE SCREEN # 4 - THOR & LOKI: BLOOD BROTHERS

Thor & Loki: Blood Brothers

Starring:

David Blair
Daniel Thorn

Written by Robert Rodi
Art by Esad Ribic
From Marvel Studios

By Darryll “YTC” Carter

Hey there Clashers, YTC here with another daily review. This time around, it is the motion comic from Marvel Studios, Thor & Loki: Blood Brothers. The morning after St. Patty’s we here at CBC woke up from a night of drinking and festivities to eat a well needed heap of Chinese food. But we had no film to watch with our feast. After flipping through Netflix for a spell we came across TL:BB. The four issue motion comic was sure to be an awesome spectacle of Thor’s might and thunder cast down upon the treacherous, trickster, Loki. Right?
Wrong. TL:BB was anything, but that. The series played out solely from the point of view of the trickster god himself and painted him in a sympathetic light. This work of art and great writing managed to turn three hardened comic book geeks, against the hero, against Thor. The story paved a tale of Loki’s neglect as a child; the hours of bullying at the hands of Thor and his friends, a stepmother who treated him like second rate trash and a kingdom that would not let him transcend beyond the roots of his blood. All of these created the perfect storm to turn Loki into the villain that he was.

The best part about the story is that, Loki realizes this. He is surprisingly self reflective. The whole series he goes back and forth, over and over his emotions and thoughts in his head; hoping to make some rational sense of what seems to be his fate and destiny. Sadly despite all the great build up and the finely crafted story. Loki fails to rectify the plan he has already set in motion and the series is on an ungratifying and unfortunate end. The only fail of this series is the end. You know, a lot like Mass Effect 3.

SUMMER SPECIAL NEWS EDITION # 3 - MARVEL'S FEAR ITSELF, PART ONE

Welcome to the third installment of our great and new summer specials. This time, we are going to take a long hard look at Marvel's Fear Itself event. Now that we are kinda knee deep into it, we get to see how the world deals with the Asgardian God of Fear being freed after the new Red Skull, formerly known as Sin, gets a hold of the first hammer of the Worthy and becomes Skadi. Now, She and the God of Fear lead the Worthy in one of the biggest attacks on the world that has ever been seen. And who are the Worthy? The Worthy are the avatars of the God of Fear, known also as the Serpent. Who are the other seven Worthy besides Skadi? These will also be villains and heroes that cannot resist the Serpent's power through these eight hammers. And it begins.
While this happens, Odin prepares to turn Asgard into a War Engine and plans to burn away the Earth . . . with humanity with it. Now the heroes of the Marvel Universe must fend off the Worthy and the Serpent as the clock is ticking. Thor stands against his father but will he and the Avengers and all the other heroes be enough to stop beings that grow more powerful with the more fear they spread across the planet. And they're will be casualties. This will have up to all the books till next month. Part two will come later.
