FLIPPING THROUGH:

            We open to a woman who doesn’t know who she is or how she got to where she is or why she has so many stitches on her. And she thinks this as she is attacked by a man whose … face rips off as easy as you unwrap a present. Eww.

            She escapes out of the hospital barely after seemingly being attacked by more monsters within the hospital. After she leaves, the cops come into to investigate. As our lead is running away, she thinks back to walking up in the hospital with a detective, who we find out is named Erin, promising to help her. Yet, Erin’s investigation gets undermined by one of the simply most arrogant investigators I have ever seen … Simon Beckett. Simon immediately says that everything that happened in the hospital is now under his jurisdiction, quoting that everyone has to play his “Simon says.”

            After our missing lead stumbles on the road cause of the fractured memories in her head, she is hit by a car . . .and sent flying into a sign. She is also electrocuted by the sign.  The people in the car were just going to run and leave her on the road … thinking they killed her. Yet, our girl gets up … sees them as monsters and  … well … that ends our comic.


ART:

            Screwed’s art was dazzling, engaging and full of energy. David Miller & Oracle do a superb job of bringing you a book about a fractured woman while also giving us artistic representation of that fracture through awesome panel work and set up. The many panels seemed to be shaped like broken glass, which added to the mood of the story.

            Miller’s women are beautiful and not hyperidolized. His men are strong, menacing. Miller conveys expression and makes every character very distinct. The monsters look gruesome and horrific. The action feels connect. The backgrounds are detailed and visually appealing and appropriate for whatever scene.

            Oracle’s colors really energize Miller’s work even more, fulling bringing to life this story. The lines are clean. The overall flow of the panels and characters felt natural. It was a great artistic tour de force by Miller and Oracle.


WRITING:

            Kirkham and Thomas give us a brilliant re-envision of Frankenstein through this first issue. The characters were engaging. There was a fair amount of time devoted to the main character … who still doesn’t have a name … but that mystery works with it. Her life is shattered and we, along with her, are gonna be putting the pieces of that life together to find out who she is and what is going on. Already, Erin stands as a strong female character who has a lot to say and do.

            Yet, I have to say that I give both of them kudos in the creation of that son of a bitch … yes, I called him that … Simon Beckett. He’s arrogant. He’s disgusting charming. He’s got an ego the size of Texas. And I instantly found him annoying and want to see him dead. THAT is by far a feat few writers have accomplished. To make me have such disdain for someone within the first page of their introduction. I look forward to Simon Beckett getting beaten the hell out of or worse. Is that a bad thing? No. Cause these writers have skills that automatically make me hate one character so quickly.

            The pacing for the story worked as well. Nothing felt too fast or slow. I also think Kirkham and  Thomas have dropped clues about our main character throughout the issue but still … we’re gonna have to wait and see.


OVERALL IMPRESSION:

            The issue opened with explosive action and did not let go throughout the book. I was intrigued, engaged and enthralled by the story and art. We got  mystery worth uncovering and taking such a personal journey with the main character really helps get readers feel involved. The art was mindblowing. The writing was superb.


RATING:

            I give Screwed # 1 a 9.5 … out of 10. BUY THIS BOOK NOW! IT NEEDS YOUR TOUCH!

WW Philly 2013: Zenescope & Titmouse Get Animated With Grimm Fairy Tales Pilot

            It was Saturday. The busiest day at the convention. There was a LOT going on in the convention that day.  This was the first panel I had attended on Saturday and was excited. I had recently purchased Neverland and the Dream Eater Saga from the Zenescope table during the first 2 days of the convention. I was excited to see that we were gonna have a pilot showing at Wizard World Philadelphia.

            So, right before noon, I was able to slip in to the panel room as watch as Raven Gregory, Joe Brusha, Ralph Tedesco & Jon Schnepp. After introductions, they joked about the lights, each other and were happy to see so many people here. The lights were dimmed and the pilot episode of Grimm Fairy Tales Animated began.

            And we start off with meeting grand creatures, a warrior named Sela with a beast and a … troll? I was not sure at the time. And … heads get chopped off.  After the pretty damn awesome opening  … we get to met our warrior woman … as a teacher in the modern world named Sela. She wants to guide teens while also protecting the world known as Myst. She watches while a troubled teen named Gina ends up with the wrong crowd.

            And there is drinking and cursing … oh … I am sure the parents and children in the crowd were not expecting that. Especially after the heads were being cut off. And .. . did he just …. Like did he really just …? Oh my god.  A guy in the cartoon named Jerry … took some cocaine and snorted it off a chick’s ******.

            Um … yeah.  This panel should NOT have been scheduled at 12 noon. So we go through a gruesome retelling of Hansel and Gretel that seems to hit home for Gina and her brother Hank. After the end of the pilot,  Schnepp, Tedesco, Brusha and Gregory took questions.

            One person asked how they put all of it together and Schnepp and the others explained that Kickstarter really helped bring this show into fruition. One young hopeful was asking about the voice cast while also wanting to be part of the show himself. And while both during the pilot’s airing and the questions, there were some people who left, the majority of people stayed and enjoyed the pilot, after being asked about it by an enthusiastic Raven Gregory.

            We were treated to an abridged version of the 30 minute behind the scenes, condensed into 10 minutes but was interesting and fun to see how Schnepp and Titmouse got the show together. They said they are touring to raise more money for a full season of shows. And if the pilot was any indication, it is gonna be a fun, scary and entertaining ride.

                     This week, the Golden Udder goes to a cover that was very simple yet very beautifully drawn. The second volume of the much anticipated "The Fly" series hit stores this past Wednesday.  And it had 3 different covers. Yet, out of all of them, this cover seemed to really talk to me. The emotion and pain that was on this cover spoke to my soul. The simplicity and intimacy of the cover made it stand out over all the others. So kudos to artist Darick Robertson for taking the Golden Udder this week.

It's me again BI readers, Darryll 'YTC' Carter, with a brand new CoW: Cover of the Week. Typically I only talk about the cover bringing the Golden Udder home. But since I have been gone awhile; in honor of you all I will post three covers. And they are....

This Detective Comics cover features the Caped Crusader himself and long time nuisance the Penguin. While the Penguin himself isn't particularly cause for alarm among us Batman readers, the actually layout of the cover is what caught my eye. It's just a nice classic compilation. The hero is in the foreground and the villain is leering over him. I presume that's Comissioner Gordon in the background accompanied by an ominous full moon and a small piece of the Gotham City skyline. It very effectively sets the tone, expertly standing by colors we associate with the night, mystery and the Dark Knight.

This first issue of Spaceknights is on the list because of the nostalgia it created. I picked up the issue, looked it over and realized it reminded me of G-Force/Gatchaman. The hero busts in the foreground and then their alternate selves soaring through space in the background. Its neat. I really dig the yellow and blue suit in the center. One thing i did notice though, is that the armor they're wearing below is not the same as armors soaring above. There's probably a plot explanation for that.

Last but certainly not least, in fact this is my favorite cover of week and the Golden Udder winner; Robyn Hood #1. I read the title of this book and saw the replaced the 'I' in Robin with a 'Y'. Then I saw that it was a Zenescope book and automatically concluded it would revolve around a female Robin Hood, which is bad-ass to say the least. There are three covers for this  book. Cover A by Eric Basadula is pretty awesome. I love the fairytale feel of the cover that the colors bring out. Cover B by Greg Horn features some great art. But it lacks color and the imposing stature that Cover A brings.




Cover C is by far the best of the three. The painted feel of the colors seems more of a match for a Robin Hood tale. The action pose is stereotypical of Robin Hood and with that comes a bad-ass factor. When you add in the flaming arrow, the hint of a burning blaze in the foreground and the arrow in her mouth; you come out with a winner. I'm picking this up.

Grimm Fairy Tales: Angel

This week the notoriously milky Golden Udder goes to, Grimm Fairy Tales: Angel. Its a one shot but if you're like me the cover will at least get you to pick it up. Via the Zenescope way, this Mike Debalfo cover smacks a smoking hot stereotypically blonde angel on the cover. She's got some stylish armor as little as their is... and appears to be in a broken or war torn Heaven. Intriquing? I'm waiting to read it right now. You gotta admire Zenescope's sex sells strategy. They draw some alluring women.

Broken Infinite Invades Philly Comic Con & I Almost Kill Stan Lee

Welcome one and all. Tis I, Frankie Rodriguez. New site. New day.  And boy, much has happened since we last talked. To my Clashers, be not afraid. Comic Book Clash has evolved. THIS is the next stage. The next Evolution. Read all our usual quality stuff and enjoy the ENTIRE BROKEN INFINITE site. ALL OF IT. But after you read this. This past weekend, I had the pleasure of covering the 4-Day event. Yep. This year, it was 4 days. Normally,it's 3 but some new management and some pretty awesome guests changed all that. Who were the guests you ask?

 Let see: We had Chris Helmsworth . ..Thor himself in the flesh (but only on Saturday).

 We had legendary wrestlers: Ted Dibiase, Amy Dumas (aka Lita), Jimmy Hart, Diamond Dallas Page & Paul Bearer.  Not to mention current WWE Champion himself (and known comic book enthusiast) CM PUNK!

  We had Dean Cain, Melissa Joan Hart, James Marsters & all 5 .. count 'em 5, STAR TREK CAPTAINS.

   WE EVEN HAD STAN LEE. (How I almost killed him later.)

 Arriving early, I had picked up my press pass and was able to walk in during the end of set up for the con Thursday Afternoon. The new set up was amazing. Instead of the normal two halls, they opened up 3 full halls just for the con while the forth was used for registration, lines and tickets. (Excellent move there Wizard)  Watching the set up made me feel the positive energy.  I looked at the line of VIP who were ready to get in as I walked up to a female volunteer when I asked her, "So, what do you think of the set up and this year's con going to look?" The volunteer replied, "I been here for several years and this year just seems so much better. It looks bigger, it feels bigger ... just feels like its gonna be a great con."   After walk around taking some pictures, the VIP entered as they passed by the Zenescope and Avatar tables on the red carpet.

The vast convention space was well utilized as there were areas for stars that split the normal commerce areas while the vast majority of the stars were nestled in the center of the con;which I personally dubbed Red Carpet Row since red carpet went up nearly to all the areas where each of the celebs were stationed. Past Red Carpet Row, there were more merchants and Artist Alley, which was HUGE this year. So many artists. From local and indy artists like Shawn Alleyne, Inkbot.net & Interrobang Studios to known comic professionals such as  Miguel Sepulveda (of Stormwatch fame), Jamal Igle (who I interviewed a few months back), Greg Horn and legendary artist Neal Adams. While talking to several independent artists, I was able to get their business cards and close the day with meeting up with my friend and Broken Infinite writer Hector Ramirez. My friend and Hector were both in extremely jovial moods.

      Then Day Two happened. And Dear Lord. For the first time in years, if ever, Friday had a turn out that was almost as good as a Saturday turn out. Many of the celebrities had arrived (such as Anthony Michael Hall, James Hong and the aforementioned Legendary wrestlers). The fans were jovial. Artists were working hard on commissions or keep attention to customers. Parents were walking their children around the many merchants with clothing, comics and swords. (Yes. SWORDS) There was even LIQUOR up in this con. Liquor! As I saw my friend, we noticed George Perez and decide to take the time to get him to sign a book, just to take a break. And after an hour and a half (and an personal apology from Perez himself), I got to talk to George Perez. As a journalist and a fan, I was estatic. He signed my New Teen Titans (Vol. 1) # 6 and I asked him how he was enjoying the con.

 "Oh. I am having a great time," replied Perez.

 In my mind, I was squealing like a 12 year old girl in joy. In person, I had a big smile as my friend took a picture of George Perez and I. (I have idolized this man for 20 years. He is why I am doing this now.) After living that moment, I was able to observe the Jedi Master Class then went on my way to lunch with same friend as earlier. As we walked out the door, Dean Cain was just coming back from his panel ... stopped my  friend (who was ex-military and wore his dogtags) and introduced himself. My mouth dropped (Superman stopped us to talk to my friend) then I shook his hand. He was not able to take time  at the moment to really talk but he thanked my friend for his service and wished us well.  After a picture with my friend that I took. (Lucky punk.)

 After lunch and looking at I checked out the Stan Lee photo op, just to hear fan reactions. Stan Lee, 89 years old, was a HUGE draw as the line started about an hour before his photo op. Fans were going on about ... between some complaining about the wait ... to others who were just happy to be there and get this chance with him. One fan stated, "I never thought I would get this chance but here I am. I am  gonna meet Stan Lee!" The line for Stan Lee moved quickly and I moved on to talk with a few more artists and cover some panels. (more on those later) I actually ran into a lovely Wonder Woman cosplayer.  She smiled as I asked her for a picture. She had told me that some people had complained about her costume while I said that I thought she did a great job. What do you think?

 Saturday rolled by as the con was jammed. People were everywhere. I tried several times to talk with Greg Capullo but the line was far too long and was not able to get to speak to him. The Chris Helmsworth panel was fun with a lot of people going on how they enjoyed his Thor while he answered questions. At one point, I ran into my friend again and we were gonna head to lunch. As I talked to him about what were gonna eat ... I was pulled away in a 45 degree angle. Mere seconds later  .  . . MERE SECONDS ... I see  Stan Lee say excuse me. If that bodyguard or whoever pulled me back didn't stop me, I would have crashed into Stan Lee. STAN LEE IS 89 years old.

 I ALMOST KILLED STAN LEE.


    If I had crashed into him, I would have become American's most hated man. Comic Fanboys would have wanted blood.  I almost walked into Stan Lee. Me hitting him could have killed him ... THANK GOD I DIDN'T WALK INTO STAN LEE. (Mr. Lee, if you are reading this ... I am so sorry)

 After that and a late lunch, I calmed down, I had gone to Artist Alley and talked with Shawn Alleyne, local Philadelphia artist, to ask him about the con. "This is good. Been keepin' busy. I been doing well, selling prints," said the artist. "This year seems so much better than last year," he stated after I asked him what he thought of the convention. After talking with some cosplayers and retailers and getting Miguel Sepulveda's autograph, it was time to call it a night.

      Final day had arrived. I had overslept so I missed Stan Lee Q & A (FRELL) but I was able to look around at some deals and attend another panel (Writing & Editing in Comics - that will come up in another post) and pretty much talk with creators, enjoying the rest of the con. The con ending with a high note as many con goers left with smiles and a great sense of satisfaction. And while the Big Two (although DC artists Greg Capullo, Miguel Sepulveda and more were there) and Dynamite Entertainment were noticeably absent this year, there was much fun from many of the fans, creators and even staff. With that, It is time for me to get on the TARDIS and see if I can catch Stan Lee's Q&A. Till then, Break the cycle and take it all in.

Philly Wizard World Impressions

     With all that out of the way, Wizard World Philly was a blast. In the four days it was open it managed to bring something new and interesting each day. The amount of people in attendence was tremendous. There were tons of artists who set up tables; from Greg Capullo to George Perez. This convention had celebrities out the wazoo; Stan Lee, Patrick Stewart, William Shatner, the original Buffy, Kristy Swanson, Melissa Joan Hart, WWE's Lita, CM Punk, Chris Hemsworth and the list goes on.

     The cosplayers were in good taste this year, with an alarming amount of them dressed as Fin the Human from Adventure Time, including CBC's own, Hector Ramirez. There were various panels and programs; How to edit and write comics, How not to make a comic book, Jedi Weapons Training,  Q & A with the various celebs and Sci Fi Speed Dating. The latter of which didn't pan out to well for most of the guys who attended. Sadly.. as expected.

     In the end Wizard World impressed and exceeded my expectations. I can't wait to see what they throw at us next year.

Grimm’s Fairytales: Neverland Hook

Typically, I am a superhero guy. Capes and tights are where I’m at. Occasionally, I’ll delve into what I call the grittier stuff; like Scarlet and Coward. Aside from that, the dirtiest I tend to get is a rusty bench in Gotham’s East End. Never would I think to touch some dainty fairytale crap, right? I had my fill of that from Disney movies growing up. But Grimm’s Fairytales, Neverland: Hook is anything but dainty.

            On a normal day, the average person would tell you that Peter Pan is the hero of Neverland, ever destined to battle the despicable and vile Cpt. Hook. GFNH puts a spin on that. From what I’ve deducted from issues #1-2, Captain Hook, Nate, is the hero of this tale and Peter Pan is a villainous being of pure evil. How many people just said “what the hell”? For I know I did when I started reading GFNH.  As if that weren’t wild enough, Nate (Hook) has a transmutable metal hand that often takes the shape of a hook, but also has the potential to shift into a cannon that bares a close resemblance to Megaman’s Megabuster.  I found the art of the panels somewhat lacking for my taste and juxtaposition seemed disconnected at times (which could also be a script issue). But the story and premise itself were more than enough to keep me reading and yearning for more.

 I must mention though, there was some serious T&A action on the cover, yet next to none of it within the book, save Tinkerbelle. This is a good thing, though when touring Zenescope’s site I noticed a correlation between the covers of their products… Let’s just say if your internet drops out for a bit, you’ll be okay if you get a few of their books.  Stay frosty out there guys. Grimm Fairytales, Neverland:Hook gets a 3 out of 5.
