Legends of Power, WEEK # 33: And Even Convicts Can Be A Power Ranger

LEGENDS OF POWER, WEEK # 33:
Fade to Black
Power  Rangers RPM

This is an oddity.  Most Power  Rangers series starts with a multi-parter. Yet, while this does pick up directly from the events of the first episode, it felt less like a multi-parter and more like a continuation of the series. We see our rangers in action. Dillion and Izzy made their way into Cornith and survive an attack from a Venjix bot.

After their arrival the new buddies end up in jail. While in jail, Dillion gets to have a sit down with the General , who asks him who he is. Dillion refuses. Summer then joins in, telling him about the Rangers and gives a pitch to join him. She also thanks him for saving her life. And then, for the first time in Ranger history, we see not one but  2 eventual rangers are in jail … and we get a jail battle. A pretty awesome jail battle. We find that Dillion wants to find his sister and he ends up defending Izzy in the slammer.    At the end, Summer returns with the other rangers and puts in to no small terms that he can either stay in jail or become a Ranger. Dillion asks if they have anything in black.

Overall, this episode continued to build upon the first one and really gave us one of the most unique rangers in history in Dillion. He was driven to find his sister. He is very guarded … at first but then does defend Izzy, who he seemed to get affection for while in Prisons. We get to see Izzy’s Shadow Puppets for the first time. And we get to see Summer and Dillion start what would be the series’ most apparent romance (there were 3 in total).

The prison battle was well done. We got good depth on Dillion but also good character development for Izzy, Summer and Scott. Really a good job.  The downers this episode was that Flinn was only really background for much of the episode. And we are seeing only bits & pieces of Venjix. Overall though, a really great episode focusing on a great ranger.

Legends of Power, WEEK # 42: A White ... Um ... A Ranger Wedding?!

LEGENDS OF POWER, WEEK 42:

Ranger Yellow
Power Rangers RPM

RPM graces our countdown again with this 2 parter that really got into Summer’s background and fleshed her out as well as provide viewers another dangerous look at this dystopian future. This two parter shows how dangerous it is in RPMs future while giving us great character development not only for Summer, but for Scott, Dylan and Doctor K.  It also shows the first Ranger Wedding in history … well, almost wedding. (Sure we got Zedd & Rita’s wedding but that definitely is NOT a Ranger wedding).

We learn that before the Venjix Virus and invasion, Summer was … to put it lightly and bluntly .. . a spoiled BITCH. Seriously, she was wanted on almost hand and foot. A far cry from the woman that we see as Ranger Yellow. She was petulant. She was demanding. She was … A BITCH.  And the person that seemed to get the worst of it was her butler. Her friends and her really showed themselves as typical rich snobs … till Venjix attacked. Summer was separated from her parents and it was just her and her butler.
And then … for the second time this season, merely 2 episode after the first one, we see our second on screen death in RPM. Summer’s butler dies which really brings about the largest change in her.

And that was all in the past, during present day … future  … whatever, we get to see Summer dealing with her parents forcing an arranged marriage to her. And while Scott and Dylan are both EXTREMELY interested in her, visibly showing it throughout the 2 parter, she decides to go through with the wedding. Why? Cause her rich parents, who are acting rich, are actually broke. Meanwhile, the wedding is used by Tenaya 7 to infiltrate the Rangers headquarters for the diamond that Summer has; which oddly enough is the last real vestige of wealth her family has and the target of Tenaya’s plan.

As the wedding commences, Tenaya attacks as the Rangers watch on. Once Tenaya goes on stage … she turns around the bride to see … Doctor K. Yep. Doctor K and Summer did the switcheroo while BOTH are in wedding dresses. And we get an awesome fight between Summer and Tenaya while the guys are busy with the grunts.

At the end, Summer stand up for herself to not only her parents but her “fiancĂ©e’s” family, saying she won’t marry him. And when the fiancee’s family looks down at her, Summer’s parents back her up. Not to mention, Doctor K actually defeats Tenaya 7 her own way, bring up vistages of emotions to the surface.

The Ranger Yellow 2 parter was a solid story that gave a lot of character development, action, backstory and decent writing all around. We really got to know how Summer became who she is now and learn about choosing your own destiny. The Wedding fight was HUGE … and AWESOME. There were some really key funny moments in the episode … including  the guys all fumbling around when Summer was ready to morph, all of them looking at her in her wedding dress near dumbfounded at how awesome she is.

Why did this story not rate higher?  1 – While I enjoyed the subplot with the parents, the monster was a bit lackluster. 2 – the Lansdown diamond plot seemed to really come out of no where. I really wish there was more build up to it. 3 – This episode is honestly good but not as great as a couple more that are gonna show up later. Hint: One of them is the episode we hinted at earlier in this article.

Still, the first Ranger wedding turned into a brawl and it was glorious. I really enjoyed it. That is why Ranger Yellow takes the # 42 spot of Greatest Power Rangers Stories of All Time.

Well, with that wedding out of the way, it is time to bid you adieu. Till next week, May the Power Protect You!

Legends of Power - Week # 47: The Countdown of the Top 50 Greatest Power Rangers Stories

LEGENDS OF POWER  # 47:
Ranger Blue – Power Rangers RPM

The morphing grid was one of the first teams we ever heard on Mighty Morphin Power Rangers 20 years ago. As time passed, we heard about the morphin grid less and less. Saban had sold the rights to Power Rangers to Disney who barely  touched the word … till their last season with the franchise with Power Rangers RPM.

RPM reinvented the word, calling the Morphin Grid into the Universal Bio-field; which to be honest, sounds a whole lot better than Morphin Grid. In Ranger Blue, we get what many Power Rangers fans never thought we would … an explanation behind the Universal Bio-field and the actual morphin sequences themselves. Yes, Dr. K, in her infinite wisdom, decided to let the RPM team ask her questions for her to answer.

And it ends up with her explaining the RPM filmed morphin sequence down to the tee. What is more amazing that the explanation is used as set up for the main plot of the episode later, dealing with Ranger Blue himself, Flinn. It was a great way to explain the long mysterious morphin grid.

Why is this on the countdown? I think what I just told you explains why. Why is it # 47? Because while the explanation is good and the episode overall is interesting … it was kinda of down played by Flinn’s need for justice and him messing up. While that did give interesting character to Flinn, it also kinda of made him look good and bad all in the same episode. So, Flinn looking bad till near the end of the episode is why this is # 47.

Next Week: With a Strength of a . . . Oh no. Th at would be telling.
